Who: Lila Evans and Open
When: Late Afternoon, June 12th, 1867
Where: Outside the General Store
Status: Incomplete
Summary: Lila tries to decide how much she wants to let her brother and husband know she has peppermint sticks.

She should be heading home. It would be getting dark in a few more hours and a proper lady shouldn't really be out and about without her husband (at least if she had one, which Lila did). The bank was right there of course and she could just wait for Arthur or Gray to finish with whatever they happened to be working on and head home.

She hadn't been home most of the day either. She'd been by the church that morning in a few vain hopes that God might be listening a little closer there than anywhere else in town, but God's only answer so far that day was for her to find herself in the possession of a letter from her sister. The seal remained unbroken, though she'd considered a few times just opening it right up and seeing what was new in Santa Barbara. She knew most of it would be easier to hear from someone else. As long as it didn't inform her she was going to be an aunt again by the time the letter reached them though, she'd be fine.

It had led her on to the General Store where she had been picking out gifts to send back to the rest of her family. Mostly fabric and yarn to make something for each of them along with a fair amount of peppermint sticks. Though the candy was actually to go no further than her own home. She'd get more later to send with gifts. For now though she just stood with her basket, looking between the bank and the way back home.

Going to the General Store was always a welcome break from his family, even though Jessup loved them dearly and he had the small Lily by the hand. He’d gone to pick up a few things on the small list that Abelinda had given him. It wasn’t much, mind you, but enough to keep him busy for a while. That and Lily was sure to see some things in the store to keep her father on his toes.

He chuckled softly with a shake of his head, knowing full and well that Abelinda probably just wanted him out of her hair for a little while. He took off his hat when he entered the store, smoothing a hand over his hair and started collecting the items that his wife had requested. Yes, Jessup was whipped, but he didn’t care.

There were a few items on his wife’s list that weren’t in the store, and would have to be special ordered. Her and her jalapeño’s. Stepping outside he placed his hat back on his head, a bag of goods cradled in one arm and his other hand wrapped around the small hand of his daughter who was happily sucking on a stick of hard candy. Jessup was going to die for that.

He paused for a moment when he noticed a woman standing outside, looking from one place to another. “You alright, ma’am?” He asked, glancing down at Lily and gave her a wink before he looked back to the woman.

Lila probably did look a little crazy. Then her hair was starting to loosen from her usually neat bun and her curly locks only made it frizz around her head. Thank goodness the day was getting close to over and she could just let her hair down. Lila looked up though when she heard someone addressing her, blood rushing to her cheeks a bit when she realized how she might look. "I'm fine." She smiled just a bit, glancing down at the small girl and back up at him. "Just can't seem to rightly decide if I should go surprise my brother or just head on back home."

It shouldn't really be that difficult to decide. Fifteen feet into the bank or out to the edge of town. She didn't mind walking alone with her parcels. "Thank God I haven't gotten myself lost."

Jessup honestly didn't think she looked like anything other than a confused woman. He gave her a slight smile, and inclined his head to her once she said she was fine. "Good." He hated to see anyone looking distressed. He glanced towards the bank and then back at her. "Well I reckon that would put someone in a dilemma."

He raised a brow, chuckling softly and shook his head. "Well even if you had I'm sure that someone would've stopped and helped put you back on the right path." He felt Lily as she tugged on his hand and he looked down at his now sticky little girl.

Letting out a sigh he glanced back up at the woman, "I'm Jessup Greene, my wife and I own the barber shop, and this is my girl, Lily." He smiled down at his little girl as she seemed to perk up at the mention of her name. "We can keep you company if you'd like to wait on your brother, or we can walk you back home. Since it is gettin' a little dark out." He shrugged a shoulder after he'd spoken his offer. He didn't mind either way and it gave him a little bit more of a break from his lovely wife.

"True. About everyone in town is right friendly though so getting lost isn't too much of an problem." Lila looked back at the bank for a long moment, clicking her tongue to herself. It's not like either of them would be walking alone if she wasn't there. Home would be safer and she was getting an escort anyhow. He didn't seem like the type that might rob the bank on a whim either, so he must be good folk.

"I best be heading home in all truthfulness. Elsewise they'll be inquiring the entire way back what all I bought and I'm not much at liberty to say." She might be able to manage to get them something and have it be a complete surprise. "Lila Evans. My brother Gray owns the bank there. Pleased to meet you Mr. Greene." She nodded and looked down at Lily. "And of course you, Miss Lily."

Jessup nodded in agreement, “Yup, folk around here do seem pretty friendly. A lot more friendly than they are in Austin.” Not that Jessup would mind going back to Austin, but if he did he’d probably get roped back into Rangering and that would not go over too well. At least he didn’t think so.

While the lady spoke, Lily started swinging Jessup’s arm a little bit, showing that she was ready to get going herself. He nodded his head, and then let out a small chuckle. “Most men are that nosy.” He inclined his head again to her as she introduced herself, and would’ve took his hat off as he did such but his hands were full. “Pleasure to meet you as well, Ms. Evans.” He stole a glance down at Lily as Lila spoke to her, and shook his head as his daughter stopped the swinging of their arms and ducked behind his leg. “I honestly don’t know where she got her shyness from.” He gave the woman a smile and looked down the street. “Which way do you need to head, Ms. Evans?” He asked, canting his head to the side a little as he looked back over at her.

"Ah, so you're from Texas then?" Not that she had ever been in that part of the country, but she had heard plenty of stories about the area. Almost every dime novel with a cowboy story involved some part of Texas it seemed. "I hear it's right pretty out there.

"And when might the whole lot of you just decide to stop asking and just let us have our secrets?" Lila looked at him pointedly, but then all men were about the same in that respect. As long as their women weren't out working at the brothel, why should they care what else they might be doing? Lila wasn't out spending all the money either or Arthur might have had her under house arrest by now. She smiled at the little girl though, feeling bad for scaring her any. "Aw. I promise I don't bite." Little Lily already had candy though so she didn't want to offer her any more and have Jessup unhappy with her. Lila started walking down the street, heading south. "Just heading right outside of town. It's not dreadfully far." It was only about a ten minute walk for her from the edge of town when she was just taking her time, today she seemed to be doing fair with pace, staying slow enough for Lily to keep up.

Jessup nodded, “Yup, moved from Tennessee out to Austin when I was fourteen.” He gave her a slight smile and nodded once again. “Yes ma’am it is. I’ve seen some of the prettiest country out there while I was Rangerin’.”

He chuckled softly, and lifted a shoulder. “Ain’t no tellin’. I doubt that the lot of us won’t ever let you women folk have many secrets. Then again, I don’t right care for bein’ nosy. I figure my wife will kill me if I ask too many questions of her.” He glanced down at Lily, watching her carefully as she peered around his leg and gave Lila a smile. “She’ll be alright won’t you, little one?” Lily nodded her head and Jessup gave a smile over to Lila. He started walking as Lila did his limp barely noticeable as they walked and Lily began swinging their hands again. “That’s fine, Ms. Evans. Be good to stretch my legs a little bit.” The pace was certainly fine, Lily seeming to keep up even as she ate on her candy. “How are you likin’ New Shelby so far, Ms. Evans?”

Lila smiled just trying to picture it all in her min with everything she'd ever heard. It was hard to think of something so beautiful and breath-taking though without ever seeing it. Not that California was any less lovely. Just different sorts of pretty. "Sounds real pretty."

She tried to keep pace with the two, just half a step ahead to direct the path. "Wish my husband were so willing to comply that I might not want to be sharing everything with him. Not that I'm trying to talk unkindly of my husband as there's hardly a more wonderful man in the world. Just a bit annoying at times."

Oh how many ways were there to answer that? Well it's much nicer than Santa Barbara where it finally got to the point I was too embarrassed to leave the house because everyone knew I'd almost shot my husband. She knew she was the reason they had even moved to New Shelby three years ago. At least no one around here knew her as Loony Lila. Instead she just made herself smile a bit more. "Rather happy to be here really. It's a fair bit smaller than Santa Barbara. My sister lives there with her husband still. I should probably go for a visit eventually." Not likely going to happen, but he didn't need to know that. "Have you been finding everything to your liking?"

Jessup nodded, “It is very pretty, but some of the harshest land that God placed on this Earth. Well that I’ve been to, in any event.”

He smiled softly, “I’m very willin’ to comply with my wife, she makes the rules I just work.” He nodded his head, “I understand, Mrs. Evans. I reckon anyone askin’ you a thousand questions would get a little annoyin’ after a while.” He swung Lily’s hand, giving her a wink as she looked up at him with those pretty brown eyes.

As they walked Jessup just took the time to enjoy being out and about and stretch his legs. The shop was doing well, and things had finally started looking up for them even if it was just a little bit. He smiled over at Lila, “That’s good. I ain’t never been to Santa Barbara, how is it there?” He asked, merely out of curiosity of what the city was like. “I surely have. The shop is doing good, and we’ve settled in nicely. Just waitin’ to see if any of the other family is goin’ to move out here with us.” He lifted a shoulder, “If they do then it’ll be good.” He wouldn’t admit that he was beginning to get worried about his ma and baby brother.

Lila nodded a bit, smiling. "I've heard tales of places clear across the ocean with desserts so hot you could spill water and it would evaporate before it ever hit the ground." Most of her adventures in life had been in the form of books, but it might end up being more fascinating and magical in her head than they ever were in life. Oh, she'd considered travelling when she was younger, but how did it look for a single young lady to be wandering around the whole world without any sort of escort? She already thought it looked bad enough wandering town, though no one ever seemed to say anything to her face if they thought anything of it.

"I believe I would very much Mister Greene." Lila was almost up to a grin by that point, but then it was good to hear that there were strong women in the world and men willing to let them be so. "I'll try to keep my questions to a minimum as well if you'd prefer? Daddy said I was always a bit too curious for my own good."

Even if she was being accompanied by very fine company, she was glad to be coming across the little house and grounds that belonged to the Whiteleys. It was about what you would expect of the bank owner's family house, complete with a small stable for the horses. Though it was far easier to walk than saddle up just to go to town. "It's mostly like this. Bigger, but about the same, but I think everyone is more friendly around here." Lila readjusted her package and basket a bit as it was slipping. "Glad to hear you've been settling in nice and comfortable. But it's always good to have family around."

Jessup smiled as he listened to her, and chuckled softly. “I think I’m good where I’m at then. I’ve seen a couple of days like that out in Texas, or Mexico but they only lasted for a little while.” Jessup personally would’ve liked to go over to Germany where his mother was originally from. She’d told him stories of her homeland, of how beautiful Europe was, and Jessup wanted nothing more than to just see it once before he died.

Jessup didn’t mind admitting that Abelinda wore the pants in their family, well for the most part anyway. She did make the rules; he just went with the flow unless it was something that he knew he had to handle. He shrugged a shoulder, “You can ask me anythin’ you like Mrs. Evans.” He paused for a moment, considering her words. Well, the way I see it if you don’t ask, you never learn and there’s no such thing as bein’ too curious.” He smiled over at her, “Trust me I get questioned all the time so I don’t mind answerin’ them one bit.”

He nodded his head, still swinging little Lily’s hand as Lila spoke. “Ain’t that usually how it goes? Smaller places, friendlier faces. That’s what my ma always said.” He looked over the Whiteleys home for a moment and then looked back over at her. “Yup, it is. My sister might be movin’ out here, and I’m still waitin’ on my ma and youngest brother to get back from visitin’ the rest of the family. Lord knows how long they’ll be.” He chuckled softly, and shook his head. Knowing his ma she’d probably got herself and Baby T into trouble somehow.

"You've actually tried the pour water on the ground and had it vanish before it hit?" Yes, Lila was a bit gullible at times, but she the world was supposed to be an amazing place with men that grew to the size of houses and went about the country with a big blue ox. There was a fine line between truth and fiction in those kinds of stories though. Believing in amazing things like that seemed a lot more fun than not believing.

As long as things worked for them though, who was she to say anything about how his house was run or by whom? "Can't rightly think of too much else to ask though. If I think of something else later though, I'll write it down in case I happen to ever run into you again. Or perhaps stop by the barber shop." They would likely do far better with a pair of scissors than she might. "Perhaps he just didn't want me bugging him with questions when I was little about why things were the way they were. Like the sky being blue." Her mother had been pretty good at giving him some sort of answer that seemed very logical to a child, but after she was gone she just had Shannon to try and explain the way of the world to her.

"Folks look out for each other though. You don't see that as much with the larger places. Maybe more people around have others thinking someone else will just go help and no one ever does. Your ma sounds like a very wise woman." Lila smiled a bit more, but then she was enjoying this. Just talking to anyone not related to her or trying to sell something was a relief. Then there was almost as much relief over just being home again. "Hopefully sooner than you think though." She paused for a long moment though, looking at the door and then back at the pair. "Any chance I could talk you into staying for a short spell? At least long enough to get you some cool water."

Jessup smiled over at her, and shook his head. “Yup I did but it didn’t work out that way. But I tell you that it felt like it would do such a thing. Phew, there were some really hot days on the trails.” He lifted a shoulder as he answered her question. Jessup was the sort of man to try such a thing, since he too had read a few books in his day. He needed to get back to reading but with the shop just opening it felt like he didn’t have time. Jessup decided then and there that when it was quiet in the shop he’d read, but that wasn’t likely to happen.

He chuckled softly and nodded his head, “Alright that sounds like a fair deal to me. You and your husband both are welcome to stop by the shop anytime you wish.” Jessup never had any issues with answering questions; he himself was pretty much an open book. He stole another glance down at Lily, watching her as she finished off her stick of hard candy. There were two more in the bag he was carrying for his other two children, but they’d probably have to wait until tomorrow or after supper to get theirs. It all depended on what sort of mood Abelinda was in when he returned home. “Now that is a good question. My pa always said that the sky was blue because God fancied the color.” He smiled over at her once again.

“She is a very smart woman.” Jessup missed his ma and her banter with him and his wife. “I reckon that people in smaller places want to do the best they can by their neighbors in the event that they need help one day. I mean, it is only right.” At least that was his thinking. He would hope that if it were getting dark out that someone would walk his wife home, but then again Abelinda would probably tell them to go away and call them names. “It would be nice, but I think she’s havin’ too good of a time to come back.” He chuckled, and paused when she did. “I’d be much thankful for a drink, but we can’t stay too long. Abelinda will be worried ‘bout Lily here. Not so much me.” He rolled his eyes, a playful and loving tone to his voice as he spoke of his wife.

"You sound like you'd be a good one to have around some night of just exchanging stories of the past." It already sounded like a fun evening to her, but then fewer people around would also mean fewer adventures and funny stories just about life. Everyone had some sort of story to tell after all, right? Right. "Pity it didn't work out right though. Especially when it was already hot and you could have used the water." The summers there were warm, but at least the winters were rather mild. Comparatively to Oregon at least.

"I'll be sure to bring him by then. Or at least try to bring someone around with me." Gray would do just as well and Fola might very well enjoy it if Arthur didn't want to just get out and about with her. She smiled at Lily again, noticing that the girl hadn't been saying anything the entire walk, but then some people were just shy like that. "That might very well explain why angels always seem to be wearing blue or have a bit of a blue tint to their wings. Goes rather well with the green grass."

Lila nodded, going up to the back door that lead right into the kitchen area. "Well you never know when people might show up around here. Stagecoach comes through regularly enough, some to visit and some coming to settle." If Shannon showed up though with all of her family, Lila might have to suggest she and Arthur move out. Maybe Minnesota... "Stay at least long enough to cool off before you head back." She set her packages down on the small table in the kitchen and went to get them both a glass of water.

Jessup chuckled softly, “I do try my best to be entertaining, Mrs. Evans.” Jessup did love telling a story or two, if he could get a word in edgewise with his wife around. Their favorite story to tell was of the night they met, even though one of them would interject if the other one wasn’t telling it right. He lifted a shoulder, chuckling once again. “Tell me about it. I got a right good fussin’ at for that.” It was true enough. His brother had yelled at him for a good while after that, telling him that he was a fool.

He nodded his head, “Alright, stop by anytime. I’m sure Abelinda could do with the company herself, if you ever just want to stop by by yourself.” He knew that Abelinda probably grew tired of just him and the children being around and she could use herself some lady friends. Hell, they might even teach her a handful of lady-like manners. Lily gave Lila a bright smile back, and Jessup knew that it probably wouldn’t be too much longer before his little one started yammering away. She’d had food in her mouth. All of his children were the same way; they’d never speak while they were eating.

“And it goes good with the gold on their robes!” Lily actually spoke, peering around her father at Lila and grinning.

Jessup chuckled and nodded his head, “That it does.”

He followed Lila in, finally letting go of Lily’s hand and setting down his own bag of supplies before he took his hat off. Reaching up he pushed a few strands of hair back into place and nodded his head. “Yes, that’s true. I reckon they’ll come along directly.” He stood near the doorway, hat held in both hands and watched Lily as she stuck close by.

“Momma ain’t goin’ be happy.” The little one spoke up and glared at her father as he chuckled.

“She’ll be alright.” He gave his daughter a wink, and then looked up at Lila. “Thank you, Mrs. Evans.” He moved over to the table, pulling a chair out for Lily before he hoisted her up to sit in it. He watched her as she fixed her skirts, and shook his head with a chuckle as he waited on Lila to return.

"And you do quite a fine job of it as well." Womenfolk did have a fondness for talking on, especially when you got them into groups together. Lila was always just afraid she was going to say too much or the wrong thing at first and usually had to be pulled into conversations. Right now she seemed to be doing fairly well. "I'm sure you did though. It's the price of being too curious about things."

"I'll be sure to do that, Mister Greene." She did come into town enough and it might be good to make a few friends as well. Maybe work toward not being jealous of every woman who had the ability to bear children. Lila was better, though it might be better to start more with one child around rather than multiple ones. At least Jessup's seemed quite well behaved as some children would talk with their mouths full, though that had usually been the boys she knew.

Lila nodded, taking a moment to try and straighten out her hair before turning back around and setting the water down in front of both of them before taking another empty chair. "So then. I've been hearing plenty from your daddy. Oh old are you Miss Lily?"

“Thank you.” Jessup accepted the compliment with a slight bow of his head. Jessup shifted slightly on his feet, chuckling softly with a nod of his head. “Yup, it is and I’ve never been one to understand that. I reckon though that I’ve just never really cared what people think so I just ask my questions to keep my curiosity at bay.” He lifted a shoulder with a smile.

“Good, I’m sure my wife really would enjoy that.” He gave her another bright smile, glancing over at Lily and watching her for a moment as she bounced slightly in her chair. He moved to the other side of his daughter and pulled a chair out for himself. “What?” He raised a brow at Lily as she looked over at him, and then she began muttering something in Spanish. With a roll of his eyes he reached over and tugged a strand of her hair gently. “More like your momma than you let on, kid.” He chuckled as another glare was shot his way.

He stood once again as Lila entered the room, and inclined his head to her as she sat down the water in front of them. “Thank you, Mrs. Evans.” As she sat he moved to sit back down, and took a sip of his water when Lily was asked a question.

Dark eyes blinked at Lila and Lily sat her water back down before she answered the question. “I’m two.” She held up two sticky fingers, eying them for a moment before dropping them back in her lap.

"You're quite welcome." Lila replied with a nod back to him. She wasn't used to just asking questions since she started growing up and had to start answering questions. She'd done fairly well though without poking around for the answers to everything. Though it would be wonderful to know everything.

"It's the least I can do for you coming all the way out here." It was hard to say when anyone else would be showing up if either of the "boys" got distracted by the saloon or other things in town. Then it would be plenty of running around, so for now she could just sit back and relax for now. There would still be time for darning socks and getting the wash ready to do tomorrow.

"Two whole years old!" She was trying to be cheerful about it and hoping it looked as good as she was trying to be. "And what sort of things do you like to do for fun?"
