New Arrivals And Old Acquaintances
Who: Josephine Chisholm(and Benjamin) and Donnie Dooger
When: June 6, 1867 - Afternoon
Where: The telegraph office and then to the restaurant
Status: Complete

"You sit here and be a good boy while mama goes inside to have a telegraph sent to papa to let him know we arrived safely and are missing him terribly." Josie said as she sat her three year old son on the bench outside of the telegraph office after setting down their travel bags at its base. With a light, loving kiss placed to his temple Josie left her soon for a couple short minutes to slip inside the building to see about having word sent to Henry back in San Bernardino.

Mother and son had arrived in New Shelby by way of the afternoon stage, Benjamin having enjoyed the bumpy ride by constantly kneeling on his mother's lap to look out in childlike wonderment at all they passed, chatting all the while to his mother on what he say, with a couple questions about this and that tossed in here and there. It was a nice distraction for Josie from the quite uncomfortably ride they were taking.

When she emerged from the building Josie collected up their bags. "Are you hungry, Benjamin?" She inquired of her son as the boy slid from the bench to his feet. His response came in the way of a wide smile and a couple quick nods of his head. A room could be gotten a bit later after Josie had gotten herself and her son fed.

Benjamin grabbed a fist full of material of his mother's skirt as Josie gave a quick scan of the other side of the street, finding the restaurant which was only a short walk away. Waiting for a couple riders to pass by, Josie stepped down onto the dirt street with her son jumping down from the boards of the walk into the dirt covered street. The boy needing no real incentive to follow beside his mother, keeping a firm hold on her skirt as her hands were both busy with carrying their bags, toward the restaurant other then knowing he'd be able to fill his belly with food once they reached their destination.

Donnie stepped out of the General Store, the sack slung over his back bulging slightly with the weight of the select items he had stolen. It was a good thing that the owner had left his wife in charge, for it worked in the favor of anyone who lacked money (or preferred not to spend it) and needed supplies. Mrs. Lewis was just too damn trustworthy and easily distracted these days.

A smirk on his face, the outlaw tucked his wide-brimmed hat lower over his eyes and sauntered down the street, nodding to the few people that glanced in his direction, but otherwise trying to keep his head low so as not to be recognized. Posters had started to appear in places around town, though the artist had obviously only guessed at certain details. Only those who were good at noticing details would be able to recognize Donnie for who he really was. Of course, it was only a matter of time before the townspeople figured out who he was.

He waited for a few men on horseback to pass by before heading across the street, his destination being the rear entrance of the brothel, where his horse Zeke was tied. The hired guards there would keep an eye on his ride, Phoebe would make sure of that.

There was a young blonde woman some yards away from him who was waiting for the same two riders to pass by. It wasn't until the horse's hindquarters were out of the way that Donnie halted his pace. His mouth dropped open a little, causing a slight overflow of tobacco and saliva to dribble down his chin. Realizing this, Donnie roughly wiped his chin clean and spat out the excess tobacco, his attention returning to the blonde almost immediately.

It had been three, maybe four years since he'd last seen Josie. Hadn't really thought of her since then, his main concern having been getting his gang back on the road. Now that she was here, though, he found himself wanting to be with her again. She was still beautiful...

Then his gaze slid to the boy gripping her hand, and Donnie felt his mouth curve into a silent snarl. So she had a kid now, did she? Must've gotten married. He didn't seen any man in the immediate vicinity that gave any indication that he knew her. Maybe he was still in a shop somewhere. Or maybe he was dead. Donnie's mood lightened a little at that possibility.

He started walking again, away from the brothel and instead following after the woman who had once saved his life.

Josephine wasn't aware that she was now being trailed in her path from the telegraph office toward the restaurant. She really had no reason to believe that she would be in a town she had just arrived in.

"Can I have some cake, Mama?" The little boy inquiring as the two came to the entrance.

"After you've had a proper meal." She said with a gentle smile as she glanced down at him. It wasn't like she was denying her son something he wanted, that was something she had a hard time doing, but sweets treats were never allowed before a meal. Their consumption came after a proper meal was had.

"Ok!" He said a bit loudly before making a dash into the eating establishment through the open door. In the young child's mind the sooner he got through the main part of the meal the sooner he'd be given the slice of cake he asked for.

"Benjamin Donald Chisholm, you come back here right now." She said with a stern raising of her voice, and a halting of her steps. Benjamin skeetered to a halt at the sound of his mother's voice. With a slow turn on his feet he walked with a lowered head back to where his mother was standing.

"You know better then to go tearing around a place like that with people inside." She was raising him better then that, she and Henry both were. This was a field he could go racing across, it was a public place where people gathered. And his running inside could have led to an unfortunate accident.

"Sorry Mama." He said shuffling his feet with his eyes cast still to the floor.

"Don't be so forgetful next time." Her voice and features softning at her son. "Why don't you go chose a table for us." A smile seemed to light the boy's face when he raised his eyes to his mother. Benjamin turned and walked in proper fashion to a table he spotted near the back close to the kitchen.

Getting a better grip on their bags Josie followed slowly the path set by her son.

He kept close behind the woman, trying to be inconspicuous in case, by some slim chance, this wasn't who he thought it was. But even as he listened to the conversation between mother and son, Donnie knew that he was not in the least mistaken.

Then he heard the boy's middle name, and his footsteps stopped dead - a bad idea considering an elderly man was behind him. Donnie ignored the man's swearing, brown eyes locked on the restaurant where Josie had just entered with her boy. Donald? Had to be a coincidence, right?

Inhaling a deep breath through his nostrils, the outlaw started into the restaurant. His eyes followed the blonde as she took a seat near the back of the establishment. Had she chosen a different location, Donnie might have decided against what he did next. However...

He wound his way past the tables and stood just behind the woman.

"Hey there," he managed.

Josie tucked the traveling bags she had been carrying beneath the table her son had chosen before taking the seat directly across from him. WHile Benjamin faced the establishments entrance, Josie sat with her back to it. It was due to this that she hadn't noticed the approaching man.

Though there had been a slight hint of recognition in the masculine voice from behind, Josie didn't make any connection to it when she turned her head to give a glance back to adress the man.

"Hello." She returned with soft politeness and a smile as she looked back and up at the man standing behind her. It was a smile that soon faded the instant she got a good look at the man. The outlaw she had met years back. Donnie Dooger. He was the last person she had ever thought she'd encounter again in her lifetime. And the shock of that read easily on her face.

At least she hadn't forgotten him. Brown eyes watched the woman's face, trying to discern whether the expression of shock was pleased or angry. Considering he'd left her without a proper goodbye, Donnie wasn't sure how this little reunion was going to turn out. And he purposefully kept his gaze away from the boy seated across from the woman. Donnie didn't care much to associate with the product of Josie and another man.

"Don't I know you?" He questioned stupidly, lacking anything more intelligent to say to Josie. Most smart people made him feel inferior, and when they had first met, the blonde had indeed given him that same feeling. However, he had warmed to her over time. He hadn't forgotten her kindness, and the fact that she could very well have turned him in to the authorities while he was injured. A bit of that inferiority had apparently returned to him now, standing there staring down at the lady doctor.

Blue gray eyes lingered on the man a few seconds longer then would have been considered proper for a married woman before Josephine turn away from Donnie to devote her full attention for a moment or two to her son. A smile put on which was completely for her son's benefit.

"Mama's going to break a rule, but just for this one time, and let you have some cake before your meal." She said with a calmness she was trying ever so hard to keep from breaking into the nervousness and awkwardness she was feeling at the moment. Whatever it might be that they may have to or want to say to each other, this wasn't the place. Not in front of her son....their son.

"Mama needs to speak with the man for a couple minutes. Can you sit here and be a good boy and eat your cake while Mama's gone. Benny?" Benjamin bobbed his head happily. With the promise of cake the little boy would've agreed to just about anything his mother asked of him. She did say she'd be gone only a couple minutes, and that probably would be the time it would take Benjamin to devour the slice of cake he was to quite shortly be served.

Once she got a positive response from her son and made a request to one of the waitresses to bring a slice of chocolate cake to the table, Josie gently eased her chair out just enough to allow her room to stand. She then turned to give Donnie a brief look before stepping past him toward the door and then out into the warmth of the day.

It still wasn't clear to him whether the woman was pleased to see him or not, nor did he offer a companionable smile to help break the ice a bit. Instead he just stood there, feeling very much like the fool that he was. He felt even more foolish when she looked away without saying anything to him, and for a moment he assumed Josie was simply going to ignore him, but once he managed to concentrate on what she was saying, his hopes began to rise again. Didn't matter to him whether the kid got cake or not; Donnie would have been happier had Benjamin not been there at all.

Eyebrows lifting expectantly, Donnie took an unconcious step back to allow Josie more room to stand, then locked his brown eyes on her blueish-grey gaze as she stared at him once more. He held his breath, waiting for her to speak to him, however, she simply strode past him toward the door.

Lacking a better choice, the outlaw turned and followed after her, bowing his hat down over his eyes as he stepped back out into the sunlight. Still he waited for Josie to speak. Any other intelligent person would have made the outlaw angry by now, and were this blonde a man making him feel like an idiot, Donnie was sure he would have slugged her. Josephine was most assuredly not a man, that much was true. Donnie had all the evidence he needed as his gaze slid over her slender form.

Josie gave a polite, friendly smile to a couple passersby when the hit the boarded walk outside the restaurant. As uncomfortable and awkward as it might be for Donnie, it was just as much for Josie. She was keeping her feelings controlled as best she could. Making a public scene was not going to make this unexpected situation any better, and then was that little fact that it would draw too much unwanted attention both of their ways.

"I never thought I'd see you again." Josie started off when she looked once more to Donnie with a light curving of her lips into a faint smile.

Seeing her smile, Donnie allowed himself to relax a little. Part of him had expected her to yell at him for leaving her like he had. The other part was glad that she wasn't.

"Yeah... Me neither," he replied, glancing down at his feet and scratching the back of his neck uncomfortably. "Guess it's... fate... or something." One shoulder arched into a half shrug.

"How ya been?" His lips twitched in an attempt at a smile, but it was more of a grimace than anything else.

Those first couple of words cut deep. He hadn't intended on returning, she had always known it deep down, but to actually be hearing the words. Well, they just brought back a few pangs of hurt she had felt years back when she returned to the cabin and found him gone.

"Do you really care?" Josie replied back. Her bluish-grays searching his face to see if his brown eyes held any regret for leaving her without any word or indication. To catch even the slightest glimmer that maybe, just maybe, he still cared for her the way he seemed to have all those years back. His response might make it easier, or harder, for her to disclose that she hadn't been the only one he left behind. Though there was a good chance that Josephine wouldn't be able to bring herself to tell Donnie the truth.

He knew from the look on her face that he had said the wrong thing, and that made him feel all the more awkward. It was a strange feeling to him, awkwardness, one he had only been truly introduced to when Josie was caring for him. Not a good feeling, and Donnie felt himself sinking into one of his moods.

"Hell yeah I care," was the outlaw's reply, a little sharper than he had intended. "I asked, didn't I?" Frowning, Donnie cast a quick glance about, taking a step closer to the restaraunt to allow a man and a few teenage boys to pass by more easily on the boarded walkway. He didn't bother to offer them a friendly nod as they passed, stress from his current situation keeping him distracted.

When Donnie turned his face back to Josie, he heaved a sigh, trying to calm his nerves. This reunion wasn't supposed to turn into a conflict. He was truly pleased to see the blonde again, if a bit surprised.

"Look, I ain't here to start no fight, and I ain't trynna pretend I didn't do no wrong in leavin' like I done. I shoulda told you I was goin', but I didn't want ya involved any more than ya already were." His expression softened a little. "We - that's to say, my boys and me - had to get outta there 'fore the Law showed up."

With a slight nervousness Josie bowed her head slightly as the small group passed by her and Donnie, then let her gaze lift to the window of the restaurant to look in at her son. A faint smile flickered as she watched him a few short seconds. Enough time for the man and teen boys to have walked out of earshot of the pair.

"It's a little late for that, Mr. Dooger." Her gaze swinging back to the man. Those blue-grays of her holding none of the softness they had when her attention had been briefly diverted from the outlaw to her son. Josie was involved in things more then the man could possibly have known.

"And you had to stay gone for over three years?" Sure she had heard the rumors of the law searching for outlaws in the vicinity, but that searching didn't last anywhere near the span of three years. "You should have come back. You shouldn't have left us there!" Her voice raising to almost a scream, and it was in that short second that followed that, with wide eyed realization, Josie knew she had revealed too much. More then she had ever intended to.

"I need to get back to my son." Josie said a little bit calmer as she made the move to turn away from him. She hadn't wanted to get into an arguement with the man. Didn't want to cause a public scene that would lead to unwanted questions from strangers further down the road.

He frowned again, despising the formal title that spilled from her lips. Nor did Donnie know how to answer Josie's anger-filled question. True, he could have returned to her, but in all honesty he hadn't figured that the woman would want him back. He was a wanted outlaw, after all. Not to mention the fact that he still had a close alliance with a brothel madam. Not exactly a glamorous life for a lady doctor to be involved in.

However, Donnie mentioned none of this aloud. He simple stood there, listening to Josie as she berated him for not coming back. The fact that her voice was beginning to rise in pitch worried and annoyed him as well, which caused him to cast glances about the street, noting the few passerby that stopped to stare.

'You shouldn't have left us there!' It took a few moments for that to register in the man's mind, but once it had his complete focus instantly snapped back to Josephine. The surprised expression on her face told him that she hadn't meant to let that little bit of information slip, and Donnie found himself glancing from the boy eating cake in the restaurant to the little blonde woman who was now turning away from him.

Without thinking, Donnie reached out and grabbed her arm in a none-too-gentle grip, his shock and need for answers outweighing propriety. Oblivious to the stares they were getting, the outlaw tried to force Josie to look at him.

"What d'you mean us?" He demanded.

Josie tried to wrest her arm free and continue on back into the restaurant, but Donnie's grasp on it was too strong a hold. "It doesn't matter." Josie spat at. Though she had stopped fighting against his hold on her, Josie made no move to face the man. "You made your choice, and I made the one I had to." The tone of her voice a little less harsh now. It was hard to miss the stares and gawking her altercation with Donnie was drawing their way from passerbys.

When she ceased to struggle, Donnie found enough control in his outrage to slacken his grip a little. He tried to catch her eye, but still she refused to look at him. Fine. "It matters," Donnie snarled back. Jerking his head toward the window, the man grunted, "That boy mine?"

"Yes." She said in an answer that was barely above a whisper. Josie still refused to look at him, she feared seeing the look on his face with the coming of the truth. So instead, with a put on smile for her son's benefit, she let her gaze slip back to look through the large window of the restaurant to where her son was still seated.

"He was named after his great grandfather and father. Benjamin Donald Ellison." She could feel a single tear trickle down her cheek, one that she hadn't dared make a move to swipe away. She didn't want him to witness that little spring of emotion that she was unable to keep from seeping out.

For the first time, Donnie actually looked at the boy seated alone at the table inside the building, still happily eating his cake. There wasn't much of a family resemblance, in his opinion, but that could have been his own self-denial talking, and the fact that the boy had more of his mother's features than anything.

Brown eyes returned to the blonde's face when she spoke again, making him witness the tear trailing down her face. Throat dry, Donnie tried to swallow, tried to wrap his mind around it all. He wanted to reach out and brush the tear from her cheek, but figuring she would simply push him away, the outlaw did nothing.

"If I'd a-stayed to say goodbye," Donnie said, his tone quieter, "would you a-told me about... him?" He nodded toward Benjamin. Even as the words spilled from his mouth, he himself didn't know if he would have stayed had he known Josephine was pregnant. He wasn't exactly the perfect father material.

"I wouldn't have kept it from you." Fingertips brushed lightly against her cheek to gently swipoe away to tear she felt still there as Grace moved slowly to turn and face the outlaw. It wouldn't have been knowledge she would have shared if Donnie had still been around when she learned she was with child in an effort to keep the man tied to her. Her sole reason behind telling him would have been that she believed he had a right to know. He was an outlaw afterall. And Josephine wasn't a woman who was delusioned enough to let herself think for even a split second that the man would have stuck around for any great length of time if he had known about her condition.

Benjamin had more a resemblence to his Ellison side. He had the blonde hair inherited from his mother and his other features bore close resemblence to the Ellison family, save for his eyes. Unlike Josie and the rest of her family who found themselves with eyes of blue to bluish-gray in color, Benjamin found himself saddled with eyes that matched the color of his father. Josie saw Donnie everytime she looked into those big, brown eyes of her son.

He let out his breath in a loud huff, still unsure himself how he felt about all of this. He had a son? A boy? It made his head spin. Donnie released the grip he had on Josie's arm and glanced distractedly about the street. People were still staring, filling Donnie's gut with unease. If anybody were to recognize him...

"I gotta get outta here," the outlaw spoke, resting his eyes on the blonde again. "How long you in town for?" Though his attention was on the woman, Donnie's eyes were focused over her shoulder, noting the motions of the people nearby. It wasn't smart at all for him to have stood here in the open for so long. He wanted to talk to Josephine longer, but it would have to be somewhere more private.

Josie offered a polite smile to two women who gave the pair a look as they passed on by before answering him. "We're moving to New Shelby."

Witnessing Donnie's edginess as more people seemed to wander by giving light attention to the two, Josie was now starting to regret leading the outlaw out of the restaurant to talk, more attention now seemed to be directed their way. Not such a good thing for a wanted man who could be recognized by anyone. Staying inside the place had been out of the question as in no way would she speak of anything they may have had to say to each other in front of her son. The unopened clinic could have been an alternative, it would've offered more privacy then the open street, but Josie didn't want to leave her son unattended and out of her sight for any long amount of time.

Moving here? The news both thrilled and worried him at the same time. Maybe he'd have a chance to make things better between the two of them if she was here. Then again, he'd never forgive himself if Josie got in middle of a gunfight or other such danger involving his gang and somehow got hurt... or worse.

Still, Donnie was determined to make things right. He still wasn't sure what his opinion was concerning the boy - his boy - but there was little time to think about that at the present moment. All these people meandering about were making him all the more nervous, and Donnie kept expecting the sheriff or his deputies to come charging around the corner after him.

"Where you stayin'?" Wetting his lips, the outlaw watched her expectantly. Would she even want to see him again? If she really was moving here, Donnie felt sure he would find her even if she didn't tell him where she was going to be living. He could always force her to talk to him. Though, that was assuming Donnie could think of anything to say to her.

"We'll be staying at the boarding house for a few days." Josie answered with a light smile. Hopefully once Henry arrived in town they could find something a bit more permenant. "Haven't been there yet, though, wanted to get a meal in Benjamin before heading over there." And though she didn't know why she made no mention of it, Josie purposely neglected to mention to him the actual first bit of business she had tended to upon her arrival into the town.

Despite his growing anxiety at being noticed, Donnie felt a surge of optimism flow through him. If luck was with him, he would be making a visit to the boarding house soon. His mind had no room to consider that Josie was awaiting the arrival of her husband, nor did the outlaw think to ask. He only assumed she chose to raise the boy on her own. And now she was here, standing before him, even offering a small smile to him.

"Guess I'll be seein' ya then."

For the first time since his reunion with Josephine, Donnie let his gaze flicker to the brothel across the street. The place where his horse was kept near the back. The place where Phoebe worked. He and the brothel madam, while not an official couple, did have their own intimate agreement. One that Donnie wasn't keen on dropping, even for the sake of Josie.

A sigh escaped him as he nodded a goodbye to the blonde and stepped down off the boarded walkway, glancing in both directions before heading across the street. Passerby were still staring, which gave Donnie no other choice than to enter the brothel, rather than disappear between the building and the Pony Express. Even as he climbed onto the porch, the outlaw grimaced, only able to imagine Josie's reaction at him entering a whore house just after speaking to her. It would have been funny under any other circumstance.

Josie watched him walk away with a fading of her smile. And any thoughts the blonde may have gotten when she witnessed him climb the steps of the brothel vanished quickly with the tug felt on her skirt.

"I want another slice of cake, mama." Grace heard as she turned to find her son no longer inside the restaurant, but now standing in front of her on the boardwalk. "I think one slice is enough for one day." Josie told him before letting her gaze wander back across the dirt street only to find that Donnie had disappeared into the whorehouse. It had been where he'd been headed afterall.

"We'll go back in and have something to eat, and then it'll be nap time for you, Mr. Chisholm." Josephine said with a light smile before leading the boy back into the restaurant. It had been a journey from San Bernardino to New Shelby, and the woman thought that perhaps they both could use a bit of rest after their travels at the room that had been secured for them at the boarding house.
