Nothing beats a lazy Sunday then watching the sunset...
Who: Helene Ellwood, Ophelia Stover and Theo Ellwood [CLOSED]
Where: James’ front porch/house
When: Sunday evening June 1, 1867
Status: Complete
Summary: Helene watches the sunset, waiting for her family to come home, with her one true companion, her dog, Leo.

The sun was just setting as Helene was sitting on the front porch of her brothers’ home, and her home until, if, she ever marries. Sleeping on her lap was her dog Leo, she was given Leo when he was a puppy some years ago as a companion she guessed, she was missing her parents and her eldest brother, some had thought having Leo about will bring her out of her shell, he did in some way. Helene scratched behind Leo’s ears, she loved them the best, so soft, the way they flopped over that is what made Leo ever cuter. Leo was getting older, as everyone else, but Helene believed he was still young at heart, he still loved to fetch and bring the ball back.

She was the only one home, waiting for her family to arrive back from whatever they may be doing, sitting back she enjoyed the sunset, it helped past time on the last hours of her day off.

Ophelia hummed softly to herself as she made her way back home, her mood high, as usual. She'd just finished dropping off her article for tomorrow's paper at the newspaper offices, a piece on the increased rumors of bandits in the area, including the hijack of last month's supply train, and she was feeling quite accomplished. With her mood so bright, she didn't hesitate to flash Helene a smile as she approached the Ellwood house.

"Evening, Miss Ellwood," she called cheerfully. After three years in New Shelby, there were few of the regular faces Ophelia didn't at least recognize in passing, even if she'd never actually spoken to many of the townsfolk. Considering the fact that Helene was sitting comfortably on Deputy Ellwood's front porch with every sign that she belonged there, it was a logical assumption to make, even if Ophelia hadn't seen the other young woman working at the bank a time or two. "Enjoying the fresh air, I hope?"

It was a terribly long day. So long in fact, Theo had the thoughts of causing a hell of a lot of trouble for no good reason. However, he was too damn lazy to do anything of the sorts. Instead, he had spent most of the day at the Heel Kicker, gambling and drinking. Fortunately for him, the one fight he had gotten himself into was a victory. An easy win. He wasn't about to lose and have the shit kicked out of him again. His ribs were still a bit sore from Cub - the fat bastard. Speaking of...

"Rabbit, m'boy!" cried Cub, slapping Theo on the back as he let out a whole-hearted laugh, "I knew you would whoop that little punk's ass!"

Theo rolled his eyes, slipping on his vest and jacket after a pat down by a nice young lady with a wet rag.

"First of all, don't call me boy," he said, buttoning the vest, "Secondly, it doesn't matter what you knew. It matters that I knew and that's that, Cub." He raised his brows once with a smile then snapped his fingers at the barkeep. "Shot of brandy."

"Two!" said Cub, holding out two fingers. Cub slipped his thumbs underneath his vest - the buttons were straining from the large belly beneath the fabric. Cub must have been either drunk, or hit his head because he was never like this. It was either beating Theo up, or yelling at him.

The shots came and went, burning the throats of both men before simply disappearing. Cub would pay, Theo was sure of it.

Rocco had patiently waited outside, and as Theo mounted, he nearly took off with him only partly on. Swinging the rest of himself up and over, he reached up to tip back his hat - only, he wasn't wearing it. What in the hell made him think he was? He almost never wears the damn thing.

"Take a stroll, Rocco. Take a stroll," he said, allowing the horse to trot wherever he pleased, skimming the outskirts of the town.

Numerous homes were built outside of Shelby: some were familiar, others were not. It was a huge surprise even to see one that he knew as a kid. A farmhouse he worked at with James. As a smile crept across Theo's face, both he and Rocco reached a home that seemed fairly new. He stopped Rocco, staring at the home, the porch, the girl sitting quietly with her pup off to the side and the other who had seemingly struck conversation with her.

He couldn't help but stare. Something in the air clung to him tightly, begging him to stay; that something here was calling for him. It must have been odd, however, on the two women - a man sitting on his horse simply watching them like some creepy stalker. With this thought in mind he quickly tried to come up with a devise on how to inch closer without scaring the two.

Screw it. Theo spurred Rocco softly, trotting both he and the horse nearer to the home.

A humming noise broke Helene’s train of thought; she glanced up to see a familiar face in Ophelia, the blonde seemed to be in a happy mood, that she could tell and it made her happy already, she settled Leo onto the ground and stood up, giving Ophelia a wave.

“Evening Ophelia! And please, call me Helene.”

She stepped down the porch so she could be closer, she nodded when asked if she as enjoying the fresh air. “Of course I am, why let a wonderful evening slip by being inside? I trust you are having a good day?”

Then, all of the sudden Leo started barking, her dog hardly barks like that unless he spots something or someone unwanted. “Leo!” She yelled out to him as he ran off, she turned to Ophelia, “I’m sorry, I do not know what’s gotten into him “Leo, come back here!” She yelled again, she kept an eye on the dog to see him run up to someone on a horse, she lifted her hand to block out the sun, she could not quiet make out the... stranger?

She suddenly noticed the person coming towards the house, she was getting edgy. She noticed it was a man, but hardly anyone she recognised, she turned to Ophelia again, and asked in a low whisper “Have you seen that man before?”

Ophelia glanced over her shoulder with a puzzled frown. If the man in question was trying to intimidate two hapless young woman in the middle off town, he'd chosen poor timing -- not to mention Ophelia didn't intimidate easily. "Can't say that I have," she murmured, stepping closer to the porch nonchalantly. "If you think he might be up to no good, we could always fetch your brother, though," she added softly.

"I-" Helene started but found herself to trail off as she continued looking at the man, she was half torned in getting her brother here and leading the man off his property, but the other part, Helene was confused to what she thought, she placed her hands on her hips "Looks like he's had on too many." She replied to Ophelia, still keeping her voice low.

She watched Leo who was still interested in the stranger, could her dog know who it was? She shook her head "Maybe we should get James...but I, I don't want leave if, in case, he plans to do something to the house." Helene wasn't sure what the man would do to the house, or the to the woman, but she did not want to leave the stranger and not knowing what could happen when she's gone.

Ophelia was already shaking her head dubiously. "I'd go fetch your brother myself, but I'd not leave you here alone with him hovering like that, especially if he already makes you nervous," she said dryly. "Better the house than you, after all." She tilted her head slightly, considering. "Do you have a gun in the house?" she asked softly.

In a matter of seconds, the small dog came barreling down the broken path from the porch near he and the horse in what seemed like a fit. It was obvious he was trying to protect his territory, but Theo and Rocco weren't going to let some little pup come between them.

The women seemed to become irritable about the situation. A stranger, no less, trotting his way near them would make any person shudder. Especially since Theo had been staring non-stop. He did not know what to make of it. It was like his mind wanted some answers but his body wanted to leave.

"Shh," he mumbled to the dog, who seemed to quiet down with a few low growls, only to start up all over again. Theo stopped the horse, standing still now at the edge of the front yard. He did not feel that he should go any further. For all he knew, they could have a man inside baring a rifle of some sorts.

He kept quiet, looking over his shoulder then back at the two women. Opening his mouth several times, he couldn't find the words to use in order to tell them that he meant no harm.

Slowly, he began reaching up to tip his ha.. DAMN, no hat! Instead he pretended that he was going to scratch his forehead. Even with the seemingly strange gesture towards them, he could have appeared still a bit of a threat.

If anything happens to this house, James’ll be devastated! Helene thought to herself, she jerked her head to Ophelia when she mentioned the word gun “A gun? Ophelia, he hasn’t tried anything yet, we only need a gun if complete necessary. And of course James has a gun or two in the house.” She added as though Ophelia should know the town deputy would obviously have a gun in his home. Though Helene did not like guns, she was true to what she had just said.

She glanced up when Leo went quiet with low growls, she noticed the man had come closer she absent-mindedly stepped back, before stepping forward again “Leo! Come back here, you’ve had run in with horses before!” She stopped short when the man greated them, she looked up to meet his eyes, should there be a reason why she felt something, something that she could not pint point that was familiar with this strange man, she loosened herself up a bit “Evening sir, if you are looking for the deputy your best bet will be the sheriff’s office.” Helene only took a wild guess at what the man wanted, still if he wanted James, why would he come here? She shrugged it off.

Rocco shifted nervously underneath Theo, eyeballing the dog as he stamped his feet a bit. The horse was a good listener. If Theo wanted to see the dog fly across the yard then he would have ordered for it to be done. But he was more of an animal lover, than an animal hater. However if it had been a dog that was trying to attack, then he'd allow it.

One of the women began to speak. It was a startling decision that she had made, because Theo couldn't find the means to do it himself.

"Deputy?" he questioned, furrowing his brows at the thought. He knew that James was a deputy, but wasn't sure if he was the only one. "Deputy who?" he added, wondering if this indeed was his brother's home. But who was this woman questioning him?

Helene watched Leo carefully, he wasn't causing much harm, his protective barking seemed to have gone a touch, she shifted her feet, as the man asked about which deputy she glanced over to Ophelia for help, but quickly discovered if she mentioned whom it was that it would scare the stranger off without causing no harm. She could try it, it would not hurt, well, she hoped.

"Why that would be Deputy James Ellwood, he will not be too impressed if he heard of some stranger lurking around his home."

Theo froze as the name slipped from her lips. The other girl seemed to be rather quiet; scared perhaps, but he could have been wrong. James Ellwood's home! Then who was this? A friend watching the house? Perhaps his wife? Daughter? No, not young enough. Or so he thought by the looks of her. Theo lowered his head, a large toothy grin stretching from ear to ear. He wasn't, however, going to mention who he was.

"Mr. Jameson Barden Ellwood, eh? This be his home? Interesting. He never mentioned to me the coordinates of where he lived," he said, patting his ribcage lightly. Theo remained on the horse, still unsure about dismounting and continuing further. The two women could attack at any moment, and he did not doubt their bravery.

Theo fell silent, neither giving his name nor asking the name of she or the other.

Mr. Jameson Barden Ellwood,eh? Helene’s heard made a heavy thump in her stomach, how, how on earth did this stranger know her brothers full name? Surely nobody outside the Ellwood family would know all of that, unless... no, she did not want to think about it, it could not be him, he has been gone years, she was just a kid, why would he come back now?

"How-" Helene felt her words caught in her throat, she could possibly not answer him as she was trying to figure out how he would know such a thing? She was probably making a fool of herself here and hoped Ophelia would step in.

Dismounting the horse, he lead Rocco only a few more feet ahead before stopping and glaring down at dog, who had ceased his barking. Theo shouldn't have to explain himself in how he knew his own brother's name. After all, the two women were still just as much strangers as he was to them.

Theo flipped his coat back slightly, placing his hand on the butt of his gun. His other hand idly pulled at his earlobe - a habit he had since he was a kid. It was kind of like a security thing; he never had a blanket or teddy bear - he had his earlobe.

"Funny thing, how I come stumbling upon his home and he is not accompanying it," he said, "He isn't home, is he?" The question could have been that Theo might want to speak with James, or to be safe had Theo been a "bad guy." However the two women would take it was up to them.

Helene concentrated on the stranger, who still hadn't introduced himself she felt frozen as her feet would not let her to turn around back into the house. She was startled when the stranger flipped his coat, her eyes lowered watching his hand. Maybe now was a good time to go and get that gun of James. She wanted to run back into the house, but still, her feet would not move.

That is, when she spotted him pull at his ear lobe, she could have gasped as she had somewhat of a flashback. Even though she was only young she would still remember her eldest brother Theo, pulling at his earlobe, a habit he had picked up. It still did not let on who this stranger could be.

Whenever a stranger asked where her brother was, if she ever had a stranger feeling about the fella, she always stuck her nose in. He wanted to know about her family, of course she was curious! "Who are you and what business do you want with my brother?" She more demanded than asked, while folding her arms.

Hah! Theo wouldn't dare introduce himself to a woman standing on the porch of his brother's home. His head cocked to the side as he thought. He didn't even have a reason as to why.

"My name? You want my name?" he asked, pointing to himself with the hand that had currently been resting on his gun, "I'm Th- Uh, the one they call Eli Amsterdam," he said with a grin. Sure, it was his alias, but who cares. Unless or until James had returned home, if he was not there already, this girl would know him as such.

"I don't want anything from your brother. I - Wait, your brother?!" He almost screamed the question to her, his brows raising ever so high and his mouth agape. He pointed to her, then himself, then his horse, then.. Wait, why was he pointing to his horse? Perhaps he was just so damned confused he didn't know what to do, nor say.

"Your brother is James Ellwood? You're an Ellwood sibling?" Theo choked on the words. Could this be another reunion at play?

Helene raised a brow when he finally introduced himself, at first he was uncertain before saying his name “Eli Amsterdam?” She ran the name through her head but it did not sound familiar “The one and only.” She repeated “Are we supposed to know who you are?”

As he almost screamed Your brother?! took her by surprise, as well as Leo’s who scampered away from this stranger whom the girls now know is Eli Amsterdam, back to his owners feet where he lied. Helene was getting fed up, this, Eli, was making no sense at all, and now he was yelling? “Excuse me, but I don’t think there is a need for all this yelling.” Obviously he has a drink too many, she frowned “Of course James is my brother and I am an Ellwood sibling, I would not have said so would I?” She paused “And why does that surprise you?”

ooc: loved how Theo pointed to Helene, then himself and then...to his horse? part, Funny!

With a finger still raised, he looked down upon the dog whom had ran off due to his outrageous yelling. He had a reason for it, but he wasn't going to blurt out why. He did, in fact, had a few drinks before leaving the Heel Kicker. Perhaps what he had downed was a lot stronger than he thought - but, he didn't feel drunk. Strange.

He blinked several times, wishing now more than ever that James would just magically appear to hopefully clear things up; it seemed that now nothing would make sense.

"Ok, this is getting weird," he started, placing his hands on his hips and cursing under his breath, "You're an Ellwood sibling? Did I hear that correctly? Shit, I hope I heard it correctly."

Theo took another long gaze at her, droning out the rest of their surroundings. He let go of Rocco, and started down towards the porch, inching closer and closer to the two females. The closer he was, the deeper his heart began to sink. She was indeed an Ellwood. He should have recognized the eyes right off the bat.

"Helene?" he said in almost a whisper.

(( LOL. Yeah, I have to make him have a sense of humor. I ♥ my Theo. :D ))

If this Eli had been frustrating her before, she was even more frustrated now, this was getting all too confusing, why would this man question her, why would she lie about whom she was, she was after all standing in front of her brother's home, why else would she be there if she weren't an Ellwood "Uh, yes, you did hear correctly, I am an Ellwood, one of the youngest ones. I'm-" She stopped herself, she was not sure how much information she should let out, before knowing why Eli was interested in who she was.

Her jaw dropped, it could have dropped right to the ground if it could, her mind was buzzing "W, how..." She shook her head, she decided it might be best not to know how he knew her, "I think you should be on your way..."

"What? No.. N-n-no. On my way? No," he said, demanding that he not be told to leave.

"It is you, Helene, yes? Yes, it is. Oh my god," he said, standing straight and once more placing his hands on his hips with the shake of his head, "You've grown. God you've grown."

Fourteen years was a long time, but even so, he could see the small child in her, just as he could see the young in both Lilah and James. He felt as though each sibling were his very own child. However, he would have been some shitty father to have left them like that. Silently, he thanked God that he was only their brother - not like that made it any better. Theo raised a hand to the back of his head, not quite sure of how to put this into words. It was simple, really, to tell her the truth.

"It's been a long time, I can't blame you for not really remembering what I look like," he said, a sheepish grin on his face. He looked over at Ophelia, who seemed to be highly confused. He couldn't blame her, either. The only one to blame, was him. Lilah and James seemed forgiving enough, and he hoped that Helene might be the same.

He shouldn't give his hopes up.

This Eli was clearly frustrating Helene, why wouldn't he leave? If he was a gentleman at all, he would leave, maybe that was it, he could not possibly be a gentleman at all.

"Well of course I have grown, that is what we do!" Sure her reply may have been harsher than it should, but she still had not quiet got what all the fuss about, why would he care if she had grown or not. As far as she was concerned Eli Amsterdam was a stranger, she decided the way he pulled at his earlobe was a figure of her imagination.

She sighed, "Am I meant to know you Mr Eli Amsterdam, because I have been running your name through my head but have come up with nothing. Why are you acting like you know me?"

Theo frowned deeply, only to realize that he had given her a false name. He was not going to get upset over something he had caused. Clearly she was becoming more upset by the second, and he had to give her a real name otherwise he'd most likely be killed where he stood.

"Helene, I am not Eli Amsterdam," he started, placing a hand on his chest and clearing his throat as though he were about to give an important speech, "It's me, Theo."

His reaction should have been to throw his hands up in defeat, but instead he stood there, saying nor doing anything more. That irritating lump in his throat returned; the same one that decided to show up when he first saw Lilah.

Helene stood where she was, just watching the man, if he thought about coming any closer, he would have to think again.

When Eli started his speach, she did not know what to think, he said he was Theo, but why did she not believe him, and after all these years why would he show up now? She concentrated on him more until particular features of his face started to become familiar "Theo.." She only managed to stumble out.

She did not know what to do, she did not know if she wanted to hit or hug him, she glanced down at her pup Leo, who was slowly wagging his tail side to side, she wondered if Theo was smart enough to realise why she called the dog Leo...she never admitted why, just because she liked the name. She took her eyes away from the pup and back up to Theo "I was nine." She started again, not able to finish the sentence. Nine she was, when her eldest brother left her family.

The tail of the dog caught Theo's eye rather quickly, just the same as it had caught the eye of Helene. Well, the dog seemed to forgive him, even if he had no idea who he was. So long ago Theo left the family in search of something new; then it seemed like a good idea, but now he realized that it hurt each and every sibling he had in some way or another. There was no way he could repay them all. What has been done has been done.

His arms hung loosely at his sides, the frown still apparent on his face, but only slightly.

"Yeah.. I..," he started, rubbing the back of his neck in a sort of panic as to what to say, "I'm sorry, Helene. I truly am. You don't have to believe me, hell, you don't have to forgive me. Just know that I feel like shit for doing what I did." Theo, at this point, would take any blow from her that he deserved. He would not strike back, nor yell. It was the same thoughts that ran through his head when he first saw both Lilah and James.

"I cannot give you reasons for my abandonment. There were none."

Leo being this calm meant that Theo had not come to cause any harm, yes Helene was given the dog after Theo left but it seems Leo knew well enough who he was, after all, he was a smart dog, and knew what was going on with the Ellwood family most of the time. Leo must know all the secrets in the household, he was a good listener for anyone who needed to get things off their chest.

Theo's sorry went straight of her head, if he could not give her a good enough reason for leaving, why apologise at all. She wished she had the guts to hit him, but unless he gave her a good reason too, she stood still, if he came any closer, then she may be more tempted, did her siblings know he was back

"If you can not give me reasons, I can not forgive you." She finally replied. She could tell Leo lifted his little head up to her, but her eyes stayed focused on the man that abandoned her family.

Ophelia wasn't so much confused as perplexed; the more she overheard, the more she realized that this was an intensely private moment that just happened to be playing out in plain sight in the middle of the street, with her as audience. And it probably didn't bode well that she was a writer for the town newspaper; she filed every bit of information away instinctively, the article already half-written in her head.

Ellwood clan's prodigal son? It had a nice ring to it, she had to admit.

The last thing she needed was to draw attention to herself, though, especially since this didn't appear to be the happiest of reunions. So she'd slowly allowed herself to melt into the background, extricating herself from the scene as unobtrusively as possible. She was still hesitant to leave altogether -- Helene didn't seem terribly comfortable with her long lost brother, and she'd hate to just abandon her in a difficult situation -- but nor was her input needed, at the moment. For heaven's sakes, she'd only stopped for a brief hello, this wasn't what she'd bargained for.

Whatever this Theo had done, she hoped he earned Helene's forgiveness eventually. Family was family, no matter what, after all -- and she wasn't family here.

The mood had changed rather drastically since he stepped forth towards the two females, more so to Helene. It dropped from nervous, to devastating in a matter of seconds. Even so, Theo could do nothing to bring it back up. His apologetic expressions and apology itself seemed to be empty words and emotions towards her.

He did not know what to expect from her. He should have figured that one out of the three would hold a grudge against him. She was, after all, very young when he left, in need of an older relative; someone she could look up to even with the gender difference. Their parents were gone, but he was there, for a little while. What a terrible choice.

"If I told you the true reasons you'd be even more pissed, trust me," he said with a soft chuckle. Gold and opportunity is what he had left in search for, but fell upon gambling and robbery.

From the corner of his eye, he noticed the other member of this so-called gathering try to vanish into the shadows. Theo wanted to reach out and grab her instead, to maybe lighten the mood. But alas, he let her mute herself from the situation, allowing her to listen and watch. That wouldn't be as much a problem as it was trying to get Helene to forgive him.

He began to step forward, moving slightly closer to her with his hands outstretched as if he wanted a hug. He was practically begging for it, hoping that maybe she'd change her mind about how she felt.

He knew, that that would never happen.

Helene certainly did not forget that Ophelia was still standing there watching this rather unexpected reunion fold out. She did not forget that Ophelia worked for the paper too, she stole a quick glance at the blonde, surely she would not write about a boring family reunion? Helene thought about it, then again, the Ellwood's were not a really boring family. She let out a sigh, hoping James would be home soon to get her out of this mess.

She allowed her gaze to fall back onto Theo, frowning when he told her she'd be more pissed if she knew the truth. Well, that did not settle well with her, that was far from convincing. She watched him carefully as he took slight steps towards her, he better watch it, she thought to herself, it was obvious that he wanted some sort of hug, but what for, did he honestly think she would run into his arms? If Theo had only gone for months or only a year maybe young Helene back then would have done so, but it has been years. She was a kid, now she was a young adult, he has missed so much of her life that Helene was starting to push his thoughts of her head. She realised she had to say something to dampen the silence.

"Do the others know?"

Her stomach turned at the thought, she could not bare the ideas of her siblings knowing about their brother's return and failed to tell her.

The lump in his throat had not subsided. It actually felt like it was beginning to grow the more Helene started to show signs of hating him. He stared at his hands then dropped them back to his sides, realizing that this was not a solution to get her to throw herself into his arms. He knew, that this was not going to be easy.

Helene backed away in sync with him stepping forward - something he only half-expected that she would do. His heart thumped slowly in his chest. He was unable to think of any other way to get her to understand that he was an asshole, but sorry.

Idly he stared over at where the other woman stood silently in the back. Why he looked at her, he wasn't entirely sure. Perhaps he wanted her to intervene in some way, no matter how. As he began to speak, his eyes slowly ventured back to his youngest sister.

"Lilah came to my rescue after a friend kicked my ass. She then brought me to James at the jailhouse," he started, taking a step back away from her, "I suppose I'll leave you with your friend. Clearly I have interrupted, I feel bad."

Theo made a small wave to the one in the shadows, then turned briefly to Helene before dipping his head down and turning, walking away.

"Musn't be a friend if they did that to you." Helene found herself saying, she frowned when he admitted that Lilah and James did know he was back in their lives. She wondered why they have kept it from her, maybe they never had a chance to bring it up. Still it hurt her and hoped the hurt did not show.

Her heart thumped low as Theo started to turn around; for as long as she could remember she never had been mean on purpose, specially towards family, she adored and looked up to Theo as much as she did to their other siblings, if she continued to act this way some may think she was still a brat who had not grown up, it wouldn't have made her parents proud. She chewed her lip after he looked at her again before turning away. As much as she hated Theo for leaving them, Helene knew he was still family. She tried to figure out what to say next.

"Wh-where are you staying?" She managed to stumble out.

The dirt kicked up as he stopped in his tracks. He did not turn to look, feeling that if he did, he might not be able to bring himself to continue on to Rocco, his horse.

"At the inn. Room 11," he said, moving his head to the side so that his voice would carry as much as possible in her direction. He was not angry, nor bitter. Just upset with the outcome of what had just happened.

As much as it seemed like he was leaving her all over again, he continued to walk as though he hadn't of stopped, reaching the horse and taking him by the reins. Theo did not mount, but stood there in deep thought: Should he walk back and try another tactic at gaining her acceptance, or just leave it as is?

"The inn, room 11." Helene repeated as she made a mental note of his current residence. She was torn up whether or not she would visit him, who knows maybe her thoughts will change in a few days.

She chewed the inside of her cheek as Theo continued to walk, deep down Helene wished he would turn around. He may not have her forgivness, but he was her brother, give her a day or two and you just may as well see her caving in. She opened her mouth to speak, but did not know what to say so she closed it, watching her long lost brother leave, again.

((Oh yay! and a good thread it was! I think I'll leave it open for Ophelia, if she wants to chat to Helene more))

Ophelia waited until Theo had retreated out of earshot before stepping forward next to Helene, her expression sober. Whatever had happened between the siblings, now and years ago, it certainly wasn't her place to judge or take sides.

"I'm sorry," she told Helene quietly. "I would have slipped away, but -- I didn't know if you wanted to be left alone with him just yet."

Helene watched Theo disappear before turning to Ophelia, guilt immediately roused it must have been just as difficult for her to witness the 'reunion.'

"Oh, Ophelia, you do not have to apologise, it was...unexpected you must have felt uncomfortable."

Ophelia shrugged and shot Helene a sheepish little grin. "You didn't seem to expect that sort of thing any more than I did," she laughed. "And no offense to your brother, but if he'd threatened either of us, I'd not have hesitated to ask for you to fetch one of the guns from the house." She shook her head. "I should probably be going, anyway. Father's waiting for me, I wasn't supposed to be gone for very long."

Ophelia hesitated, turning her head in the direction Theo had taken with a thoughtful expression. "I know you're probably not wanting advice from anyone right now, Helene, but I had a brother run off when I was younger, too. Duncan left when I was fourteen, just after my mother died," she murmured. She shifted her gaze back to the other young woman, her expression uncharacteristically somber. "He was killed in Tennessee, in the war. So if nothing else -- at least your brother's finally come home," she added softly.

Helene let a small smile slip past her lips when Ophelia mentioned what she'd do if Theo had threatened them, "None taken Ophelia, I may have been tempted to do the same."

She didn't let it show that she was disappointed when the other girl said she better be off, Helene would not have minded a company of someone that weren't her family, but she understood "I do not want to keep your father waiting." As Ophelia explained what happened to her brother it struck a chord with Helene, she had no idea, it would have devastated her to lose a brother like that "I'm very sorry for you loss, Ophelia, I am a bit mixed over Theo's return, I will see how it goes."

Ophelia smiled slightly, encouragingly. "It'll all work out, eventually," she assured the other girl. "And I wish you luck -- if you need a body to talk to at all, you know where to find me," she added.
