Mary Carmichael comes to town.
Who: Mary Carmichael and Quinlan Hyde
Where: Stagecoach stop
When: May 3rd, 1867 - Afternoon
Status: Incomplete
Summary: Mary is coming to town.

Saying good bye to her friends had been hard but she knew it was for the best or at least she hoped it would be for the best. New beginnings were good, right? Yes, she told herself, new beginnings were not just good they were great! Then, if they were great, why was she feeling so nervous? Why did a single tear roll down her cheek when she thought about home? And why did she have such a hard time keeping the rest of the tears from spilling? She sighed no turning back now, she was almost in New Shelby.

The moment the stagecoach stopped Mary's nervous feelings quadrupled. She took a steadying breath and got off, giving the driver a little smile as he put all her luggage in the dirt next to her. She really had too many things for one girl to carry, something she had not realized when she got on, her friends had helped her then but now she was alone.

Quinlan had just unloaded his packages from the last stagecoach and had finished giving a small wave to one of the elders of the town, that he often delivered papers to, as they started back toward their home.

Gathering up his few small packages of what was likely ink and supplies for the Press, he turned to head back to the company when he ran right into the young woman, stumbling and losing control of the parcels in his arms.. and.. well.. When one fell, it was only a given that their glasses were knocked off as well! Though, Quinlan was hardly blind as a bat without them. He could still see. He just wore them because it made seeing much easier!

Mary would have stepped aside or would have said something if she had been paying attention to the things around her instead of staring at her luggage trying to figure out how to move it all somewhere, anywhere. She had not thought that part out too well, had she? If she had she would have known where to go.

When the man ran into her she almost jumped and the moment after that she started to apologise, "I am so sorry, did you hurt yourself? Wait, let me get those...." She moved to pick up both the parcel and the glasses while still apologising. "I really am sorry, I am new here and I was in the middle of the road I know I should not have been right here but you see..." Yes, she was babbling. "I have too much luggage and I could not figure out where to go now."

Quinlan really wasn't too sure what exactly had happened. All he knew was that he ran into someone and fell flat on his face. Well, not quite his face, but he fell.
He sat back on his knees, looking to his hands, he shook his head, "No.. No, there's no need to apologize.. I promise." He brushed the dirt off both hands before inspecting the heel of his hand and what he suspected was a small cut or scrape from a rock in the dirt. He moved to get up to his feet, leaning down to brush off his trousers with his hand that didn't have any blood on it. It wasn't anything tragic.

He chuckled softly and looked to her, "It's alright.." he nodded, reaching for hs glasses, "thank you." He scrunched up his nose a bit, looking around before he slipped the glasses back onto the bridge of his nose. "I should have watched where I was going.. I'm sorry." he smiled politely to her. "I'm Quinlan, by the way... Quinlan Hyde. I own the Press Company? And.. I guess.. well.. welcome to New Shelby?"

Mary was still holding the parcel she had picked up from the ground together with the glasses. "My name is Mary, it is nice to meet you Mr. Hyde." She said politely with a small smile. She held out his parcel for him to take if he was ready.

With her free hand she nervously straightened her dress, which really didn't need straightening but it was something she did when she was nervous. The dress was flowery and just a tiny bit too sexy to be proper but definitely not sexy enough to be a condemnable offence. The other girls at the saloon had helped her pick it out, it was the one they thought made her look like a normal woman the most and would not scream Can Can Dancer or Saloon Girl.

"Mary is a lovely name," He smiled and reached over to take the parcel from her, shifting it to one arm so he could extend his other hand to her, "it's wonderful to meet you. Sorry about running you over..."

Studying her a moment, he motioned to her bags, "did you need help, then? Where are ya headed? In which direction, I mean." He moved past her to reach down to gather up a few of her bags.

"I am heading..." Mary tried to figure out what would be the best place to go. "To a nice clean boarding house?" Yes, it was more a question then a statement. She needed a place to stay for now, from there she could find a place of employment and a permanent place to live. Or at least that is what she hoped. The money she had inherited from her uncle would be enough to live off for a bit, but not too long.

"Do you know a place I can rent a room for a little while." She smiled at sweetly at Quinlan, a picture of the classic damsel in distress.

"Ah.." he nodded and looked around before gathering up her bags, "well.. I suppose we can try and find the best place for you." He offered her a pleasant smile, "I'll get your bags if you can get my ink, here?" he held his parcels to her. They were small enough. Not heavy at all.

He took up the rest of her bags and started off toward the heart of the town. "well.. there's the boarding house... maybe some families have rooms to rent.. I don't know what you're looking for, Mary.." he smiled gently, "but I'll help you find a good place." He looked to her, "I own the town's Press.. I work and live there.. well, in the room above the shop."

Mary carefully held the ink, she didn't want to drop and break anything of this man, he was being so nice and helpful the least she could do is keep his ink safe.

"Is the boarding house clean and safe?" She didn't think she could or should impose on any of the town's people just yet, they probably would not like the idea of a Can Can Dancer living in their house, near their husbands. "You really are too kind." She couldn't believe her luck.

He chuckled softly, looking to her, "well.. I don't rightly know.. I haven't really been inside of the boarding house. I know a young woman who lives there, though.. she's one of the local teachers." He smiled, "I print things for her classes."

He looked ahead again, thinking, "so.. what brings you to New Shelby, Mary?" He looked back to her, "and how long do you intend to stay?" he chuckled and shrugged, "If y'don't mind me asking." he was thankful she was carrying his parcels and he didn't mind carrying her bags.

"If a teacher lives there it probably is a nice boarding house." Mary was more thinking out loud then talking to Quinlan. She decided would get a room there besides she really didn't have much of a choice.

"I think I will be staying for a while." She spoke not to fast to give herself time to figure out how to explain what her previous job had been. "I wanted a new start after my last family member passed away." She sighed a little thinking about how her uncle had been killed, life had been easier with him looking out for her.

He chuckled, "well, I would hope so." he paused to set a bag down and reach up to readjust his glasses on his nose before taking up the bag again and catching back up with her.

"Just curious," he smiled to her, "I know that feeling... I think my Da was like that.. when we were on our way over from Ireland, mum passed away... and we were headed to St.Louis.. but my Da just wanted to stay here. just to make him not think about things I guess." he shrugged.

"I'm sorry to hear about your loss, though.. you'll like New Shelby. the people here are pretty nice and welcoming."

Mary gave Quinlan a bright smile, it was good to know someone understood. It might not be the best thing to do but sometimes just going away and starting over made sense.

"New Shelby looks very nice and the one person I met here is very nice and welcoming." She was glad that of all people that had been able to run into her it had been Quinlan Hyde. As soon as she was settled she would try to find some way to thank him for being so very helpful.

He chuckled gently, "New Shelby is very nice for the most part." He smiled shyly and shook his head, glancing down when she complimented him. "Thank you; Though," He looked to her again, "I assure you the town is full of so many wonderful people too. You'll like it here."

Studying her a moment as he walked along with her, carrying her bags, he grew a bit curious, "So.. what is it you do again?"

For a moment Mary wondered if telling Quinlan about her profession would make him dislike her, but he was just to friendly to lie too. "I am a dancer." She said a little bit shyly, "I dance the Can Can." This would be either the moment he would start to look down on her or would prove he was as nice as he seemed. She didn't see anything wrong with being a Can Can Dancer but she knew a lot of people did.

Oh, noo. No, no. Quinlan was actually quite the opposite of all of those snobby people that disapproved of Can Can Girls. No, on the contrary! Quinlan actually thought of Can Can Dancers to be extraordinarily talented. He liked them.

Which, this of course caused him to grin with excitement as he looked over to her, "Really? Are you going to dance here? In New Shelby? I think that'd be wonderful."

Don't worry, I was just not sure if I could throw Mary into anything else until this was finished.

Mary was relieved at Quinlan's nice and excited reaction to her job, it made her relax and a big smile came to her face. "I am going to try to get a job here." She agreed, she would have to eventually, the money she inherited wasn't enough to live off for ever.

"But first I think I will rest a little, get to know the town." Again she felt very happy that it had been this nice man that had bumped into her.

Well, good! He truly was genuinely excited. He always liked to hear stories from various travelers and whatnot. He liked to live vicariously through the tales he had the privilege of hearing.

He nodded, "aye, that would be exciting. You might try the saloon. I think they have can-can dancers sometimes..." he shrugged, looking off a bit thoughtfully, "Although.. I can't really recall the last time I saw them... so they may not do it there anymore."

"That sounds like a good plan. And.. you said you were going to be staying at the boarding house?.." he looked to her with curiosity.

Mary felt again very lucky that it had been Quinlan who had bumped into her, it was good to see someone was excited to see them and such a kind helpful someone too.

"I will check out the saloon." She nodded thoughtfully, she would try to figure out where everything was in this little town and she might find some more places to ask for a job.

"I think the boarding house would be best for now." She looked at Quinlan for a moment before adding, "That is a good place for me to stay, right?"

"Aye, you should. Just be careful. THere's some pretty rough sorts that frequent the saloon." He nodded to her.

"The boarding house is a perfect place to stay. Your neighbors usually aren't around for long-- they move on pretty quickly. But there are a few that stay for longer periods of time. It's an alright place."

Mary was used to men who hung out at saloons, she knew what they could do. She smiled sadly as she remembered how her uncle had died. "I will be very careful."

She thought a little bit about it and decided that the boarding house sounded good. "I think for now I will stay at the boarding house." She looked at Quinlan, "thank you for helping me."

"Please do," he smiled over at her once more.

"Oh, you're very welcome, Mary." Quinlan nodded and lead her toward the boarding house, still carrying her bags at his sides.

"It's been a wonderful pleasure of meeting you and talking to you."

Mary smiled warmly at Quinlan, she had enjoyed their talk and she was glad she had met such a gentleman. "It has been a real pleasure." She looked up at the boarding house and then back at the nice man who was carrying her bags. "I am glad we bumped into each other."

He had enjoyed the walk too. He didn't mind at all, actually. "Aye," he nodded with a soft smile, "it has." He carefully handed over her bags and took his case of ink back from her, "Thank you, Mary." His smile brightened, "I'm glad we bumped into eachother too, yeah?"

"Aye, I hope to see you again as well. I work at the Press.. you know.. You'll find me there," he chuckled and gave her a wave, "Thank you for the pleasant conversation, Miss Carmichael. I do hope we'll run into one another again." He nodded to her and adjusted his package of ink in his arms, "Have a good evening, Mary," he smiled and turned to head back to the Press Shop.

"You too, Quinlan." Mary said thinking that he wasn't only nice but actually pretty cute too. She opened the door knowing that she was not there to meet cute men but to find a job and take care of herself.
