Who: Ada Hyde and Cole Fulton
Where: Streets of Shelby
When: 29 May, mid-afternoon
Status: Incomplete
Summary: Ada's out running some errands.

Ada had grown tired of sitting around Quinlan's apartment and the print shop, getting into things she shouldn't and probably keeping her brother from getting his work done. She had gone upstairs and cleaned up from breakfast, dusted the sitting room, and unpacked the rest of her clothes. After sitting around for a while staring out the window, Ada decided she needed to do something to entertain herself. A new dress was just the cure! She still had some money saved from Paris, and a new sewing machine was in order as Quinlan didn't seem to have one.

After tidying herself up and putting on one of her best hats, she called down to her brother that she was going out and stepped out into the warm afternoon sun. Ada closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the warmth on her face. It was such a lovely day. Also, Ada had been gone quite a long time. She wondered who was still in town and who wasn't, who was still married and who had children. She missed the scandals and the weddings, the baptisms and the funeral.

In order to get the supplies she needed, she supposed she'd have to go to the general store, so Ada headed in that direction, wondering who she might run into.

Back in town again, Cole was beginning to worry. He hated being in town too much, but dammit, he needed the things he needed.

He noticed a very determined looking woman and tipped his hat. She looked well-to-do... Maybe he could pull off a side job without the gang.

He smiled at her. "Howdy, Miss," he said, a glint in his eye.

Ada looked up to see a rather good-looking man speaking to her. She smiled coyly and touched her hat quickly to make sure it was in place. But then again she reminded herself: she had promised she was going to settle down with the boy-chasing and try to live a respectable life and find a respectable husband. Still though, talking wouldn't do any harm, and Ada could never ignore someone like the man in front of her. "Well hello," she responded. "Nice day for a stroll, isn't it?"

Her coy smile made him wonder if this wouldn't be easier than he'd expected. "Beautiful," he said, accenting the word meaningfully. "Name's Cody Samuels," he said, pulling out one of his many aliases. "And you are?"

She was well dressed, and her attention to details like her hat made Cole think that he would have to work hard to keep all of his stories straight to her. Not that he'd have a problem with that. This was his living.

Ada hadn't heard of a Cody Samuels before; he must have moved to Shelby in the time she was gone. "Ada Hyde," she replied, fluttering her eyelashes a bit, but not too much. She was a Class-A flirt.

"I was just on my way to the general store. Are you headed that way by any chance?" she asked, hoping she didn't sound too pathetic.

Cole smiled. This one knew her stuff as flirtations go. "I actually was just headed that way," he said. "Would it be too forward of me to offer to escort you, ma'am?"

"Not at all." Ada flashed another smile before beginning her walk again. "I must say, Mr. Samuels, I've lived here nearly all my life except for the past few months, and I can't say I've seen you before." She glanced at him as she talked, trying to sneak a peak at his left hand for a glint of gold.

He smiled smoothly. "Yeah. I moved here a while back." He offered his elbow for her to hook her arm through.

She was pretty, this one. It might even be fun spending time with her before he scammed her.

Ada easily slid her arm through the man's elbow, smiling. The general store was only a little ways away now, but there was no reason to reject the arm of a handsome stranger whom so willingly gives it. "I've lived here since I was about eleven. My family's originally from Ireland, but for the past few months I've been traveling to New York and Paris." She continued along in silence for a few moments. "What brings you to Shelby, if you don't mind my asking?"

Cole smiled as she accepted his arm. "Really," Cole said, trying to look deeply interested. "Paris and New York, eh?" That was interesting enough. New York was a big city, and Paris... Well, it was Paris.

"Well, you see," he said, turning to face her. "I've been considering starting up a business... Hopefully a ranch." He paused. "The only problem has been finding the money for the cattle."

"I'm afraid I haven't got much of that myself," Ada admitted, which was true -- the only money she had left was the savings she had left over from her trip. There was, of course, what money was left for her in her father's will, but that was safely in the bank and waiting to be used for a place and family of her own. "Usually I rely on the kindness of strangers. Mainly gentlemen strangers." She smiled to herself. That was Ada Hyde for you: always saying what was on her mind and not a thing different.

By now the pair had reached the general store and Ada paused outside the door. "Do you have business here, or is here where I leave you?"

Cole smiled faintly. Something in her manner of dress told him that there was plenty of money to be had surrounding this woman if one only knew how to get it.

He listened as she talked, nodding. He paid close attention, looking for any detail that might be of interest.

As they stopped at the door, Cole gave his most debonair of smiles. "For a few more moments with you, Miss," he said, giving a small bow. "I will gladly find business here."

Ada raised an eyebrow before heading inside. This was perfect. He seemed somewhat mysterious, he was certainly handsome, and there was something about the glint in his eye that made Ada think he wasn't a goody-goody. She moved quickly around the shop, selecting the cloth and thread she wanted, as well as a decent sewing machine. "I'll take the fabric now," she told the shop-keeper as she counted out the money. "And I'll have the machine delivered. Anytime this afternoon would be perfect." After the shop-keeper confirmed a time to drop off the machine, Ada was pretty much finished.

"My business here is finished," she started, turning to her companion. "But I would love a little drink at the Heel-Kicker." She smiled, waiting for his response to her subtle invitation.

He busied himself about the store, looking at hats. He found a particularly nice black hat. He really liked that one. It was rather expensive, but he figured spending a little extra money would look good to the lady, so he made the purchase.

He switched his rather dusty Stetson for the new hat. "How does it look?" he asked with a grin.

At her mention of the Heel-Kicker, he gave her an intense look that melted into a smile. "Well," he said. "I never drink with a lady unless she lets me buy the drinks."

It was true. Cole always bought drinks for ladies. Especially when those drinks might work to his favor.

"It's perfect," Ada replied, nodding her approval. His desire to look good by spending a little money didn't go unnoticed. Although Ada certainly wasn't a gold-digger, she appreciated good taste and the finer things.

"I would never think of drinking with a man who didn't offer to pay." She was joking, of course, but she usually did expect at least one drink from any gentleman she went out with. It had been a long time since she had a good North American pint -- the French stuff wasn't even close (of course nothing compared to the Irish suds, either). Ada headed outside and waited for her new friend. The saloon wasn't very far.

He smiled. He'd impressed her already. "All right, then," he said. "You lead the way, miss."

He patted his wallet to make sure it was still there. The man trusted no one. He followed her, wondering what her drink was.

Ada was only too glad to do so. She walked in through the doors to the saloon, a place she hadn't been in ages. It looked pretty much the same. Ada was glad to see this. She chose to sit at a small table right near the bar. She ordered a beer.

"Nothing like back home," she started. "My family's from Ireland. But Shelby beer really isn't that bad." She smiled. "So, tell me more about yourself."

He smiled when she ordered a beer. No lady-like wine for this one, then.

"Can't say I've ever had Irish beer," he said. It was true. "More about myself," he said. What could he say? "Well, I'm the only hell my mother ever raised," he said. "I've never been one for church or anything like that..." He shrugged.

"Me either," Ada admitted, sipping her cold suds before licking her lips. She hadn't been to the Heel Kicker in ages. "Growing up in Ireland, you were expected to go to church. After my mam died, I didn't really have the heart for it anymore." She said it matter-of-factly; really, her mother's passing was so long ago that it didn't hurt as much as it used to.

"Do you often accompany women on their errands?" she asked with a coy grin.

It took Cole a minute to realized she was talking about church, not Irish beer. He patted her hand in a sympathetic gesture. She was playing into this far too well.

But when she immediately began to flirt again, Cole had to adjust his game. "Only very pretty ones," he said, a flirtatious smirk on his face.

Ada felt her cheeks flush at the touch of his hand -- she didn't often wear gloves, especially out in Shelby. It had been a while since she had had contact with any man, really. She spent most of the past month traveling.

"I thank you for your sympathy," she replied. "But it was very long ago, and sometimes I hardly can remember my ma." It was true; growing up, she constantly had to ask Quinlan to remind her of what their mother looked like. "What about your ma? If I'm not prying too much."

He was surprised when she asked about his own mother. He figured the truth about her couldn't get him in too much trouble. "Well, she's still alive, far as I know, back east. She's a church-goer... Member of the Lady's Aid and all that..." He shrugged. "She's just about perfect, I reckon." He smiled faintly. "How she ever got a son like me, I'll never know."
