Who: Penelope Wyatt and anyone who crosses her path
Where: The streets of New Shelby
When May 28th, 1867 - early afternoon
Status: Incomplete.
Summary: Penelope has arrived in town the evening before and has started the work her brothers requested of her - exploring Shelby and all it has to offer to her family. Little did she know that her ex and extranged children may come in contact with her quite soon.

. . . actually doing the work she was sent to do. Her brothers, owners of Wyatt Mining in Sparks, Nevada heard about New Shelby and sent sis (who incidently was getting into their hair - hmph!) away on a nice 'business trip' to find out all about this new town and if they could set up shop there.

Did they really want to start a branch in New Shelby? Where they really that sneaky or just wanting a break from sis? Who knew - men! She pondered those thoughts as she slowly shifted around the dusty, hot afternoon in the new environment. Pretty little town.. not too busy, though, at this time of the day.

She took stock of what they had - she had stayed in the inn, and directly across the street looked to be a house of ill-repute...a restaurant, a jail, a barber, a ranch.. all the typical holdings of these new late 'rush' towns.

She took a seat on the front wooden steps of the inn, her earthen colored skirts dipping into the dust. She tipped the small-brimmed hat down a bit around her eyes to shield them from the rising sun and looked from beneath it to absorb all she could. What would she see - or better yet, who would she meet?</ij-cut>

Today was a good day to get into some mischief. Either that or just walk around town, like she had been doing for the past two hours. Yes, she had stopped to get a bite to eat here and there, even a drink or two to wash the food further down her belly - but Robin was only really feeling one thing: bored.

She had only met a handful of people, and even then, they were only acquaintances. None she knew too well to call them friends (or enemies). By this time she could literally close her eyes and know where to step on the road; even knowing if she would stop, where she was standing. After all, she was wandering around for quite a while, as stated before.

Robin shoved her hands into her pockets and let out a heavy and loud sigh. It was almost a groan. Her head tilted back as she stopped, catching in the corner of her eye a woman sitting on the front steps of the inn; a woman who hadn't been sitting there earlier. She looked vaguely familiar, even with her hat nearly covering her face. The only thing that Robin could clearly make out was her chin and lower lip. Was it?

"What the hell?" she whispered, her brain starting to gear up in thought as she couldn't bare to believe who she thought this was. "No way." Robin quickly vanished behind a large pillar of the same building that her own mother was seated at. She peeked over numerous times, her heart pounding. Why should she worry? Her mother knew that she was here, didn't she?

A test. That was the only way to find out if it really was her. "Penelope!" shouted Robin, trying desperately to make herself disappear behind the pillar. She wasn't sure if that had even worked.

A foot peeked out from beneath her skirts and she made circles on the ground near the steps... "Dust - check." She was the epitome of boredom, chin resting in her hands and only her eyes darting about the scenery. It's kind of dull, but at least we don't have to worry about people bothering our equipment she thought to herself, being a silly lady and making assumptions too quickly.

The only thing that prompted movement from her hunkered-down self was a female voice calling out what she thought to be her name. She sat up - her back stiffening - and pushed the hat back against her head to clear her view.. Her head looked left, right, and all around.. and she saw nothing.. must be the heat... and with that she settled back in a bit. figuring she wait for another outcry before getting up to explore.

besides...she thought to herself... no one knows I'm here - it must be another Penelope...

Well, shit. She couldn't even see whether or not the woman had taken a look around. Damn it. Damn it all. Robin will have to try again - only look this time enough so that she possibly couldn't be seen.

Peeking from behind the pillar, she readjusted herself and called out once more to the confused lady. Only this time, she added the last name. The maiden name. "Look at me, Penelope Wyatt!" Robin nearly choked on her laughter, quickly covering her mouth like a child who was trying not to expose herself in a game of hide-and-seek.

Hopefully this might get her full attention, if in fact it was the Penelope Wyatt.

Well this was no mistake nor other Penelope. Whoever was calling her name was definitely wanting for her to know it. She gathered her skirts as she stood and she carefully surveyed the area around where she had been seated. She pushed the brim of her hat back a bit to make this search easier.. She saw nothing from where she stood, so she started a slow stroll to hunt the name-dropper.

Closer and closer she walked towards the column. Each step was given away with a clunky thud to the floorboards beneath her boot heels. She has no clue who or what awaited her, and truth be told - wasn't expecting what she'd find..

Softly she took inventory as she peeked around the columns no.. no.. no.. she neared the last column.. this must be it! and with that she darted her head around the column making eye contact with someone she knew very very well...

Robin..? Robin! What are you doing here??

Waiting patiently was making her antsy. So badly she wanted to just take off in a sprint down the road, but doing so would put her at even more of a risk at getting caught. Even so, the thrill would have been somewhat of an upper. But, nah.

Robin stood there, holding her breath as she heard the woman's footsteps start then stop numerous times. Louder and louder they grew, and she knew that soon she would be caught. It was obvious. Oh well.

Just as she turned the pillar to have a look, the woman who had been searching nearly smacked right into her. Robin threw herself back from instinct, tumbling off of the porch and landing on her ass onto the dirt road. "Ow, geez, lady!" She said, her face contorted.

She looked up just in time to hear her name being called out by the same person, "Mom? Hah! I knew it was you!" She called, standing quickly and not even bothering to brush herself off.

"What am I doing here? Hell, what are you doing here?" asked Robin, gesturing her hands towards her mother with furrowed brows. "Seriously, I mean, you knew I was gone.. Uh, didn't you?"

Her first instinct was to mother her - tell her to watch her mouth, or to clean her off, or to hug her tightly and tell her she missed her, or to smother her with questions... but she tried to push the thoughts from her head as Robin had been open with her displeasure at Penelope's mothering style. But she couldn't help it - she was, after all, her Robin. Her spicy, independent, wild child who she had missed so deeply, and she was standing right in front of her.

She smiled a bit and answered her question. "Yes, I knew you were gone.. " who are you kidding? of course she knew - she counted every day you were gone, Robin. And every day she yearned to know where it is exactly her daughter had gone and if she was safe..

"I'm here with your uncle's business.. they wanted me to see if New Shelby would be a good place to set up a post."

She tried to keep her distance and let Robin make the first move of affection, but she reached forward to tuck a loose bit of hair behind her ear.

What are you doing here? Are you doing well?

Robin lowered her gaze to the ground, toeing at the dirt with her boot before shoving her hands into her pockets. This was her mother, after-all, so talking back wasn't the wisest of decisions. However, it wasn't the first time it had happened.

"Well, you knew I was gone but didn't know where," she said as if repeating something they both already knew. It was true. Robin hadn't mentioned where she was going only because at the time even she herself did not know. So quite frankly, there was no fault.

Finally, she looked up with a small smile, raising her shoulders shyly. "What do you think so far? Way to go, eh?" she asked, looking around as people passed by, "How long have you been here?"

Robin was great. Free. Free to do almost whatever the hell she wanted.

She nodded in response to Robin's comment. Of course she knew she left, but hadn't a clue where. and she decided not to bother her about the details on the heartache of leaving her mother all alone to wonder if her child was alright or even alive... penelope, don't..just talk to her, don't upset her

"Well, so far it's okay. But I just got here this morning. In fact, I just dropped my things off inside this hotel and took a seat on the front porch. There's nothing like the hot, dry desert air.." She chuckled softly and gave her a smile.

"How long have you been here? It looks like you're doing well..?"

"This morning, really?" she asked, completely oblivious to the truth that had just been told. Robin thought, honestly, that her mother had been here longer than half a day. It was odd to see her mother here in the first place, but secretly, she was happy to see her.

The residents walking between them, around them, and through them seemed to be only but blurs to Robin. She stepped forward, dodging anyone that crossed her path, only to get closer. Deep down she felt apologetic towards her mother; the fact that she left without even telling her where she was going was a bit off of the charts. It was only a year and some odd months ago, a time where she felt independent and free to do whatever the hell she pleased.

Shoving her hands into her pockets, if she hadn't done so already, she smiled up to her mother and stepped back onto the porch beside her, "I'm sorry I left without telling you where the hell I was going. It was kind of a ... It was on a whim, if you know what I mean."

"Yes, just this morning. Y'know,". . . her accent usually faded, but today was slightly renewed from her recent stint in England. . . "It's not too different from Nevada, which is where your uncles are.. Hot and dry and bright. Definitely not like home" (her code for England) and even different still than Florida."

There was a lot that had gone unsaid about so much.. and Penelope knew they'd get there. So she did what she had wanted to do from the moment she laid eyes on her child: when Robin took a step closer to close the gap between them, she held out her arms and in a quick action pulled her child into her hold - and kept her tightly against her for a few seconds. She squeezed her daughter a few times and whispered in her ear "I love you so much.. I'm so happy you're alright.. and I'm so happy I get to see you.."

A smile was plastered onto her lips as she swayed a bit, getting the last few drops of hug from her little one. She pulled back and let go of her - almost! her fingers lingered on her hands.

"Well - if you're here.. is anyone else here I should know about??" she raised her eyebrow and looked at her questioningly."

Robin nodded knowingly, her hands shoved deep into her pockets still as she finished climbing up to her mother. It was only then that she was taken by surprise as she was tugged into a huge hug. At first she wanted to just push away, not quite used to being touched, but instantly after she gave in, leaning against her mother as if she were still just a child. Well, she is: her mother's child.

"I'm going to be honest and say that I'm glad you're here," she started, then continued with an answer to her mother's question about anyone else being here, "I was starting to get kind of bored being alone. You know, because I haven't seen anyone else; not sure that I should have even expected it."

She had only made a few acquaintances, but other than that, she's seen no one that she originally knew.

"Well thank you, Robin. I'm glad I'm here too, especially now knowing you're here."

Which was the honest-to-goodness truth. She wouldn't be any sort of a mother, none the less a mother is she hadn't been terribly saddened by the loss of her children, but she especially missed her Robin; hearing her say that, and knowing she meant it warmed her soul.

She let go of her and let her stand on her own once more.

"Where are you staying? Are you hungry? I'm hungry. Would you like to eat somewhere - I don't know where, but.. somewhere?"

"Uhh, well right now I'm just staying at the inn, since.. You know, don't have the money really to be living in my own home," she said with a small chuckle, placing her hands once more into her pockets.

She felt her cheeks flush. She missed her mother, no matter how hard she didn't want to admit it.

"I'm starved! Jesus, I was wondering when the hell I was even going to tell myself when to eat. Doesn't matter where we go. If it has food, then I'll be happy."
