Who: Margaret May Austin and Stella Cooper
Where: In town, outside the General Store
When: May 13, 1867, afternoon
Status: Incomplete
Summary: A runaway bottle of shampoo can sometimes be more trouble then it's worth. Margaret tries not to be too comical.

Margaret had taken her time in the general store, looking at their wares and picking out a few things that she knew she and Ashley were running low on. She'd bought some soap that she knew that Ashley liked and a new hair comb for him as his was getting a little tatty. She browsed through the sections and picked up her own favorite things as well. She'd managed to save a fair bit of money so far, hiding it away best she could in her tiny little room so that nobody would find it lest they broke in and went through her stuff. She'd taken some of that savings though to go shopping.

She was in a cheerful mood when she picked up her own favorite soap and placed it in the little basket provided for the shoppers by the store and kept on moving. She wanted to buy herself perhaps something pretty to wear for Quinlan but she knew she didn't have that much, and so a new dress would have to wait. In the mean time though she managed to find a few other things that she thought her and her son could use and browsed a while longer before picking up a bottle of shampoo that the both of them would share. She didn't particularly need shampoo yet, but she figured it would save her a trip in the coming weeks.

However if she knew that this certain bottle had such a bid for freedom, she never would have bought it.

Loaded down with her paper bags she exited the store and started walking along down the streets. As she was walking by a hitch out front of one of the stores a horse snorted, startling Margaret who tossed her arms to the side and sent the bottle of shampoo flying. It fell to the ground and she sighed, blowing the hair off her forehead. Walking towards it as it rolled away she overstepped, not being able to see over her bags, and kicked the bottle down the way farther. Groaning she chased after it, careful not to loose her wares and caught up to it. This time however when she bent to pick it she almost lost the rest of her purchases. Jerking up to save her from dumping them all she stepped on the bottle and tripped herself right in to a stranger.

"Oh!" She cried out, as she tried to right herself without embarrassing herself further. Her skirts were now twisted, her hair in a right mess and her arms full of purchases that really seemed trivial now to the pain in her ankle. "I'm so sorry...my shampoo seems to have escaped me!" She said flushing. She felt terrible for crashing in to the stranger. "Are you hurt?" She inquired, looking them over, hoping they weren't upset.

Stella had had enough with being cooped up indoors, whether working or resting, and had decided to take advantage of the first clear skies in days. The clouds had finally cleared, and the sunshine was so glorious to behold, she just couldn't bear to stay inside any longer. So she had abandoned her mending for the day, with the vague idea of having a leisurely stroll through town and perhaps a bit of shopping, and gone out to enjoy the lovely weather.

She had seen Margaret May chasing her wayward bottle, and stepped over with the thought to offer assistance, but she hadn't anticipated the accursed shampoo to trip up the other woman and send her crashing right into Stella. Reflexively, Stella threw out a hand to steady Margaret May and help her regain her feet.

"Oh, I'm just fine, don't you worry about me," Stella answered. She reached down to retrieve the offending bottle of shampoo for Margaret May and held it up with a reassuring smile. "You're the one who's taken such a nasty spill -- are you hurt?" she fretted.

She was grateful she hadn't smushed the other woman like she had feared, Margaret was so clumsy sometimes! And it didn't help when there was a bottle of shampoo that was out to get her. She didn't think that a silly bottle could mark her, but it did! Never again would she pick up something she didn't need quite yet. If this was the case, she'd rather take the extra trip to the store to ensure her safety.

When the lady held up the bottle of shampoo Margaret took a step back from it. She hadn't meant to but, darn the thing was almost cursed! "I'm not sure I want that back" she said with a small laugh. "It might just be better in the bin, it's not been a good day for me it seems with that there bottle." She said turning and placing the bags down on a bench that was up against the building they were near. Rotating her ankle it pained a bit but she was okay. "Oh I'll survive, this is the least of the rough and tumbling I do on a daily basis." she said with a bit more of a smile. "I've got a room full of school children to contend with on a daily basis. I can't be too much of a flower or they'd have me strung up by my hair." She joked, reaching for the offending bottle.

"I really am sorry to have crashed in to you." She checked over the woman carefully. "If you've any damage to your clothes, I'll pay for the mending of them." Margaret didn't want the lady to come away from their meeting annoyed. "I'm Margaret May." She said offering her hand once the bottle had been placed firmly on the bench and away from herself a bit.

"Oh, you're a schoolteacher, then?" Stella asked, her smile brightening. She hadn't been friendly with many teachers in her day, mostly because of her own less-than-entirely-respectable line of work, but she couldn't help but admire what they must deal with on a daily basis; she clearly remembered sassing a teacher or two in her youth, and was mildly ashamed to think of it, now. "You're a hardier soul than I, in that case -- I've neither the patience nor the skill to handle that many children every day," she said with a laugh.

She swept one hand over her dark green skirt, tugging it straight with a flourish. "No harm done, not so much as a rip or a tear," Stella said cheerfully. She took Margaret May's hand warmly. "I'm Stella, and before I made the terrible mistake of getting in your way, I was going to see if you needed any help carrying things," she said with a little self-deprecating laugh.

"I am, for the primary." she explained and then realized that if you didn't have a child you probably didn't know what that meant as school systems seemed to vary from place to place, "For the younger students that is. I have one five year old already, what's adding fourteen or fifteen more?" She joked, surprised that she'd admit so readily that she had a son in the first place. As for a respectable line of work, Margaret had no issues with anybody that was trying to make a living and was doing so without cheating somebody else. A dancer to her was exotic, though not quite so as the brothel workers. She'd be just as interested if she knew Stella's job to sit her down and pick her brain so to speak. Margaret, since her own life had been turned upside down was interested in people's stories. She had considered, idly, about writing a book about the people she met on her travels.

"It's nice to meet you Stella, and really I am sorry. And thank you for thinking of me so kindly." She said with a smile. "I should just learn to buy less, or bring along an extra set of hands with me when I'm getting many things." Margaret admit. She felt that Stella was a very pretty woman, and she tried not to study her openly. She had noted a red headed lady at the saloon the few days earlier, and though she couldn't be sure that this was she, as it had been dusk, Margaret remembered her fondness of the woman for Quinlan. Now of course, she wasn't looking for the man, though she probably should have been. As much as she liked the man, she still worried what might happen if she told him the truth.

However, she pushed that to the back of her mind. "I would love to be able to say that this is an isolated incident of being a complete and utter klutz, but alas I can't fib. I'm completely uncoordinated. It's a good thing I don't dance very often lest somebody loosing an eye!" She said with a small laugh of her own. She liked this ladies laugh. It was nice.

The revelation that Margaret was a mother didn't phase Stella in the slightest; if anything, it just reinforced the perception that this was a woman with far more patience and fortitude than herself. Even if Stella had ever managed to settle down and marry -- a long shot, at best, given her unfortunate habit of speaking her mind -- she was entirely convinced that she'd make a terrible mother. Which was a shame, really, because she rather enjoyed watching other people with their children, despite having no idea how to handle them herself.

"Nonsense," Stella said dismissively, waving one hand. "You just need a nice deep basket for carrying all your purchases. Limiting oneself while shopping takes all the fun away from it," she added with a gleeful glint in her eyes. "As for an extra set of hands -- well, it depends on who they're attached to, I'd say, and whether you're wanting company in your shopping," she laughed.

The light in her eyes sharpened at Margaret's claim of klutziness, and she couldn't help but grin at the other woman. "Oh, I'm sure you're not so uncoordinated as all that," Stella countered earnestly. "I do a bit of dancing, myself, down at the saloon, and I'd say it takes a measure of coordination to juggle all those parcels while chasing down a runaway bottle." She lifted an eyebrow and wiggled her fingers in the direction of the shampoo in question. "And you didn't drop a one of your purchases, either, and I've known dancers who couldn't have managed that."

Sadly, having Ashley as much as she loved him, was really just a by product of her unhappy marriage. She loved Ashley though, and figured if she had to have gone though what she did to obtain him....well at least she knew that something worth while had come out of it.

"That's true. I don't know why I don't bring my shopping basket along with me, mostly because I forget it when I leave the house." she said with a smile, "so it's bags for me generally." She laughed, "It's usually my son, so his little hands are of little use, but he could have chased down the bottle. " she fixed at her hair that was scattered about. "He's only five."

"Oh really I am to be quite honest, I'm one of the most uncoordinated people I've ever known. Had I been smart I would have just let it all scatter rather gone crashing in to people. And I have to say, I didn't drop them because they were packed so well, they're knowledgeable people at that store there." she said. However what the woman said before intrigued her. "You dance? At the saloon? I've never been there, do you enjoy it? That mush be so much fun to do for people." She asked eagerly. Margaret was quite excited about the idea of meeting a dancer. She never had before.

"Ah, but you're training him up early," Stella said with a sly little smile. "If he helps his mother at such a young age, he'll grow up to be a right fine little fellow, I'd wager."

She tilted her head at Margaret, amused and tickled by her enthusiastic questions. She'd gotten a wide range of reactions from other women upon finding out about her career, and some of them were always bound to be less than complimentary. Margaret looked as demure and proper as could be, but the fact that she hadn't stiffened up immediately did wonders to set Stella at ease. "I do -- I'm one of the saloon dancers, and I help out with the serving now and again when needed. And I enjoy it very much," she said fervently. "It gives me the chance to stand on my own two feet, as it were, and doing something I love." Her smile grew slightly, and she inclined her head at the other woman. "It's nothing so important as teaching or motherhood, I must admit, but I like to think it's one of the few things I'm good at," she added with a chuckle.

"I hope so. I'm trying at least." Margaret said a bit bashfully. It was hard making sure that Ashley had those manners that were instilled in her as a child when she had changed his world around so much recently, but at least now they were semi settled, in New Shelby anyway.

Margaret, as a little girl had dreams of being some sort of performer if it were a singer or a dancer, she'd thought that it would be lovely to entertain people, but she was much, much to shy and she had no talent to speak of, so that left her with little else, but to just enjoy the people who did have those talents all the more. And try not to be too jealous of them. "That's lovely, I really do need to go to the saloon sometime soon and watch. I've just been so busy." She shook her head, "Not that, that's an excuse, many people find the time to go out and have a drink every so often. It's just hard to sometimes find somewhere for my son to go if I want to go out." she said with a smile.

"Oh but you entertain people...that in itself is very important. If you didn't, who would? People spend more time at the saloon and thus more money when there's something of a show to see." Margaret said, thinking it over. She was sure this woman knew all that. She just didn't like it when people made what they did sound to be unimportant. Everybody was important in their own way! "I'm sure you've met lots of interesting people in your line of work." Margaret May said enviously.

Stella laughed softly. "If you've a mind to go into the saloon, just be careful. There's some rough sorts that frequent it of a night, and a woman alone might raise some eyebrows." She shook her head with a wry little smile. "We've some big burly types to keep an eye on things, make sure the girls who work there don't get hassled, but a lady such as yourself probably wouldn't want to go in unaccompanied," she warned. It wasn't that she was trying to discourage Margaret's interest -- on the contrary, if was flattered by the positive spin on her profession -- she just didn't want the other woman to face any ill-treatment in the male dominated environment.

She smiled broadly at the wistful note in Margaret's voice. "I've met a fair few colorful characters, that's for certain sure," she laughed. "I've met a number of no-good villains, too, with naught to do but drink themselves mean and start a brawl. It takes all kinds, and I've learned to spot the latter before the drink hits them too hard."

Margaret listened to Stella's warning with heart. She nodded slowly as the woman spoke thinking about what she was saying> "Well...I can probably hold my own, I know how to shoot a gun." She said with a small chuckle. "I'll take warning though. I have...." she stopped. What did she have? She had...."I have my friend Quinlan." she said with a laugh. She was sure that most people knew the man if they'd lived any sort of decent amount of time in the city of New Shelby. He was the paper man of course! "I'm sure if I wanted to really go and I was worried about being hassled, I'd ask him to take me." She nodded her head.

"No good villains? How exciting!" She said with more enthusiasm then she probably should have. She was....okay so she shouldn't have been so interested, she was a criminal herself...She'd never knocked over a bank before though. "I'm sure though you hear so many different stories as well. People love to tell them when they've been drinking." Margaret was just interested in people and it was hard sometimes for her to contain that.

Stella couldn't help a good-natured laugh at her enthusiasm. "That's an understatement if ever I've heard one," she said with a droll smile. "There's not much that gets a man to bragging better than a few glasses of whiskey and a sympathetic female ear. That's not to say more than half of it is true, of course -- the more colorful the story, the more likely it is to be mostly exaggeration, if not a complete fib." She tilted her head at Margaret again, smiling. "There's a handful of decent sorts, though; your friend Mister Quinlan seems to be, from what little I've seen of him, and there's one or two other regulars that are pleasant enough to talk with between shows."

"I may just have to go one day and get one of those men nice and soused so I can hear some for myself. There's nothing like a tall tale to go with a good drink." Margaret jested. Though she was sort of considering the idea. Sure she was prim and proper but she had a thirst for adventure. And....well she was the nosiest person she knew. She couldn't help it really. "I tend to enjoy people who can tell a tale, of course I don't believe them all but they're fun to listen to. And good fodder for writing." Margaret admit. She'd been toying with the idea of writing a book for years. And now it seemed like she might have the time.

"And yes, Quinlan has been nothing but kind to me, and so I can't argue with you at all. Does he come in to the saloon often?" She inquired a little more softly. Her fondness of the man was sure to be written all over her face, She couldn't help it. It was Quinlan!

"Just make sure you choose one of the milder sorts in your experiment," Stella chuckled. "The rougher ones can get... nasty." Considering Barnum's standing disapproval for having women inside his saloon, her warnings might not even be necessary -- but if Margaret managed to make it through the door, Stella felt obliged to make sure she didn't get herself hurt in the process.

She brightened a bit at the revelation that Margaret considered such things fodder for her own stories. "You write?" she asked, delighted. "How fascinating. I would so love to have a way with words like that, but I seem to stick my foot in my mouth more often that not, both speaking and writing," she laughed.

Stella tilted her head slightly and smiled at the other woman's obvious interest in the local newspaper man. "As for Mr. Hyde -- I've seen him in once or twice, but I don't know that he's there often. Then again, he seems so unobtrusive, even outside of the saloon, so I'm afraid I might not have been paying close enough attention."

"I'll be careful." Margaret assured the other woman with a smile. She hadn't planned on going any time soon, not with the fact that she had a child to contend with anyway. The idea still intrigued her though. Margaret May wasn't a typical woman she supposed, as proper as she may seem. "I write mostly for me, but I'd love to one day publish a book." She confessed. She didn't normally tell people her inner most important dream, but it seemed a little silly to deny it now that she admit to writing. "You seem to be well expressed to me!" Margaret said a little shyly. She did think that Stella seemed to be better expressed then some of the other people she'd met along her way.

"Yes, he kind of is a flower on the wall isn't he?" She gave a small laugh. "He's been just lovely to me while I've been here. " Her face flushed. She shouldn't be talking about him.

"When do you think you'll be preforming next Miss? I'd love to at least peek in next time you are." She said thinking that Stella would be a lovely addition to her stories.

"You haven't caught me in one of my tempers," Stella warned her, grinning a bit sheepishly. She knew perfectly well that she didn't always know when to keep her mouth shut, and had caused her fair share of disapproving glances over the years.

She prudently shifted the subject away from Mr. Hyde, though, mindful of Margaret's blushes. If she was sweet on the newspaper man, well, Stella thought that was just fine -- they seemed well suited to each other, from what little she'd seen, and she wished them both nothing but happiness. And if a change in subject made her more comfortable, Stella was happy to oblige.

"I'm there most evenings, in some capacity," she admitted readily. "Usually dancing in the evenings, but I help with the serving sometimes, as well. I'm serving tonight, actually, although I'm back on stage tomorrow evening." She gave an amused little laugh. "And please, it's just Stella. Like as not I'd forget to answer if everyone called me 'Miss'," she added lightly.

Margaret laughed, "I suppose we all have our days don't we?" Margaret was seen either as a widow or a loose woman who had a child, she knew all about disapproving looks, even if it was for a completely different reason then Stella's.

"Stella, right, sorry." Margaret replied, "I get Miss all the time as well, but that's usually from the students." She shrugged. "I may peek in tomorrow then, if I go on a walk or the like." she said wondering if the lady down the way wouldn't mind, minding Ashley again.

She knew she would have to be getting back to Ashley fairly soon, but she considered for a moment before asking, "Stella, this is terribly forward of me considering we just met, and well, I almost killed you with my clumsiness, but would you consider letting me sit down with you and ask some questions about your life one day? It would be lovely to know what sort of life you've led to lead you to dance."

Stella looked mildly surprised at the idea of Margaret interviewing her. She didn't consider her life all that interesting, really -- just a string of dance halls stretching back to her family in Colorado, and not much prior to that, either.

"I'd be happy to," she told the other woman earnestly. "I'm not sure if it really classifies as terribly interesting, but you're welcome to ask whatever you'd like to know." She smiled slightly. "No good growing up and making mistakes if we don't learn from them, and share what we've learned with others," she laughed softly.

It was more interesting then Margaret's life had been before the last year she was sure. And dancing was such a different profession, it wasn't something that you just fell in to now was it?

"I can't imagine you've made any mistakes that would teach any huge lessons? You seem happy and healthy? Those are the two important things in life I would think." she said with another smile. "Then of course I could be completely wrong and just sticking my foot in it." she chuckled. "But yes, life's little lessons seem to crop up as they may, and it's good to learn from them as you said."

"Everyone makes mistakes," Stella laughed. Her strained relationship with her brother and her father before his death was a testament to that. Still, nothing she could do about now, and no sense in dwelling on what couldn't be changed. "We just all learn from them differently, I suppose. But you just let me know when you're wanting to ask your questions, and I'll see what I can do to oblige you."

"Wonderful. I'll have to bake you something sweet for your time." she said happily. She'd of course need to use Quinlan's kitchen to do it, but it would be fine she was sure. "I suppose I should probably get a move on, my son is expecting me back at the boarding house and he'll want to play a bit before it's dinner time." She smiled thinking about her son.

"It was lovely to meet you Stella, I'm so glad we got to talking...I'm still meeting new people in town, even though I've been here a while. I know more kids then I adults!" Margaret said turning back to her sacks of items.

"Oh, that's not necessary -- but you won't hear me complain," Stella laughed. She was a mediocre cook and baker at best, mostly from lack of opportunity. And if she remembered correctly, Dr. MacKenzie was partial to baked goods; maybe she could barter a few stories for a baking lesson or two. That was something to consider, him being such a good customer and all.

"Are you sure you're not needing any help carrying everything?" Stella asked. She caught up the wayward bottle of shampoo and tucked it carefully into one of Margaret's bags for her with a grin.

Margaret was all about making sure once was at least properly thanked when she inconvenienced them. Baking was simple enough and it afforded her time not only at Quinlan's place, but time to reflect. Margaret got her best ideas when she baked. "I insist! It's nice to have somebody to bake for that's not my son or myself." She grinned.

She was surprised by the woman's offer to help her carry her packages. "Oh...well sure if you'd like. I'm only a short walk away at the boarding house." she replied with a nod.

Stella caught up the bag with the shampoo now safely stashed in it without further prompting, and shot Margaret a cheerful grin. "It's the least I can do, since your little man isn't here to lend his mother a sturdy little shoulder," she chuckled, and gestured for the other woman to lead the way. "I'd looked into the boarding house myself, when I first arrived in town, but Mister Dagfinn fortunately had a room for rent above the saloon for some of the girls."

"How long ago did you arrive?" Margaret asked curiously. For people who didn't have children attending the school Margaret knew few of them. It wasn't that it was hard to get to know people in such a small town but Margaret was a fair bit shy, especially when approaching people. Running in to Stella (literally) had been really actually quite pleasent. She wondered if she'd make a friend.

"I've been here for sixish months. The boarding house isn't so bad but I'm sure it's probably a lot nicer to be living above the Saloon...though I'm sure it's not hte quietest place in the world." She commented thinking about it. No, she would not care to live above the saloon. Her son was far too young to understand the debauchery that went on there.

"Not long after the saloon opened, I'm told," Stella answered. "So I've not been in town much longer than you, really." She laughed softly. "It's definitely convenient, being only a flight of stairs from work -- but you're right, it's none to quiet. And it limits the people I've come in contact with -- most of the people I know here in town are either employees or regular patrons of the saloon," she added with a shrug.

"Everybody I come in contact with aren't staying for very long. When they do stay they generally move within a few weeks in to something more like a home. We've been at the boarding house a lot longer then the owners were expecting I think. I don't think they're worried about us becoming residents there forever, but I bet you they're wondering." She confessed. "So I'm not sure I'm much better off for meeting people. And well you get the undesirables over at the Saloon I'm sure, the ones that live right down the hall from me." She said as they walked.

"It takes all kinds, I suppose, in a town growing as fast as New Shelby," Stella laughed. "I kind of like it here, though. I've been moving around from town to town for a few years now, I've half a mind to pick someplace and stay for a while, at least." She gave a measured shrug. "May as well be here, at least for the moment."

"I hope New Shelby doesn't get too big. It's sort of why I decided to stay here, that it was smaller. I grew up in a larger town. It was too big. Too many people. If it ever gets to be too large, I know I'll be moving on." Margaret confessed. More people meant more law enforcement. She didn't need that. It was bad enough her counter part at work's brother was the deputy of the town. "Might as well, it's got everything everybody needs and more with the Brothel." she joked.

"I've seen cities and villages and everything in between, and they all have their advantages," Stella mused. She cast a look over her shoulder towards Reed's House. "Can't say that I've ever quite understood the appeal," she said wryly. "Then again, I'm in the business of selling myself in an entirely different manner, so I suppose I shouldn't judge." She shrugged and laughed softly. "Mister Dagfinn doesn't think very highly of the place, at all," she added drolly.

"I still just prefer small places. Make me feel more at home, less of a stranger." She replied but nodded. She understood was Stella was saying. "Really? I don't know, the women are always so made up and pretty. I'd be interested to go in sometime but I can't say I've gotten up the nerve to try...just peek in the window's once or twice." She confessed. She felt a bit silly once she had said what she did. She wasn't some sort of strange person that went around looking in windows! "He doesn't? You'd think it'd help business somewhat." She commented, looking over at the other woman.

"Oh, no," Stella protested, a smile quirking at the edges of her mouth as she shook her head. "Any establishment that lures his customers away from their cards and whiskey isn't good for business, it's competition," she laughed. "He disapproves of the entire idea of the place, although that could just be the businessman in him talking," she smiled. "I'm just as glad for that sort of attitude, myself -- he's protective of his girls, and we're none of us expected to provide that sort of entertainment on the side," she said wryly.

Margaret nodded. She really didn't mind the idea of that sort of entertainment. She was curious about it if anything. She'd led such a different life then those girls most likely. "I just figured maybe they would bounce off each other. Trading up customers and using one or the other to garner more tips off each other. Men don't mind paying a bit more when they're not in their right minds." Margaret said thoughtfully.

"From what I can gather, the men can get their liquor at Reed's House," Stella pointed out. "Which makes that particular establishment competition in more ways than one." She shook her head. "It's one thing to partner with the local general store, or the restaurant down the street -- I don't know that Mister Dagfinn would ever even consider working with Miss Reed, unless there was something that overshadowed his distaste for the place," she added wryly.

"It's too bad they couldn't figure out a system that would bring in even more revenue. Perhaps have a sale...buy drinks at the Saloon and get a deal at the brothel?" Margaret said and then covered her mouth blushing and laughing behind her hand. How rude of her to say! But it was in fun though, of course. "They're both providing entertainment though to the townsfolk. They've more in common then they probably realize." She said tucking some of her hair back.

"If you'd like to try to pitch it to Mister Dagfinn, I wish you luck," Stella said wryly, as they reached the boarding house. "I'm a little too attached to my job to try and fight a losing battle like that." She offered the bag she was carrying back to Margaret with a smile. "You'll let me know when you want to sit down for that little chat, then?"

"Oh no. I think I'll just stick to the primary kids, I know in the end of it all, I have the upper hand with them." She said with a laugh. Margaret took the bag with a nod. "Thank you so much for the help." she said and then nodded again, "I'm sure I'll be in touch. I know where you're to be found, and I'm surely not a mystery."

"I'll look forward to it," Stella said with a smile. "Take care of yourself, Margaret May -- and that young man of yours, as well," she laughed, before turning to head back to the saloon and out of the heat of the day.
