Who: Helene Ellwood and Dax Marshall [CLOSED]
Where: Outside the bank/then the restuarant
When: May 13, 1867, between 12-1PM.
Status: COMPLETE
Summary: Helene takes a break for lunch

It was just on mid-day when Helene was preparing to go out for lunch. While she loved working at the Bank, she could not wait to get fresh air and she was hungry. She decided to wait around the front for a moment

She started thinking about Sunday, when she met that ever so charming stranger. She smiled at the thought, it had been a long time since someone was that charming towards her, she wondered when their lunch date would be, as she was quiet excited about it, she wanted to know everything about him, his travelling, she was sure he had many tails to tell. She had a feeling today was not the day she would see him. So she decided to go for a stroll before decided what to have for lunch, and to see if she could spot any familiar faces along the way.

It hasn't happened yet, but eventually he would reunite with the gang; he'd meant to just try and settle himself in town. To reminisce the feel of the people and the way things were ran. It was vital to know the who, what, where, when, and why.

He still wasn't sure how staying here in New Shelby was going to relieve him of his grief about his murdered family, considering the bastards who performed it were still in Colorado. However, people do travel. Perhaps they might want to leave and come here. It was a high doubt, but it was still there. Let them come; they're already dead.

Dax had a subsequent amount of money on hand, and didn't feel safe running around with it shoved into his pockets. He didn't trust the banks he robbed, afraid that another gang might rob the same bank and steal his money. But he had come to a conclusion that holding it there for about a week or so shouldn't hurt. It would be one of many weights from his shoulders.

He adjusted the large holster crossing his chest, then shoved his rifle onto his back. He looked slightly strange in his attire. His clothing was pristine: crisp, clean, and pressed (black small pinstriped suit). But his weapon sitting there on his back was just out of place. Everyone carried their protection around, so what.

Dax had been walking with his head down, a quirley shoved in his mouth as he patted his pockets for the cash that he wanted to throw into a new account. Unfortunately for the other person, he smacked right into them, immediately stepping back.

"Sorry about that," he mumbled, looking up to see a woman standing there. He stopped his search of money and took a long drag from the cigarette before freeing it from his mouth, "You ok?"

His voice was deep, somewhat quiet, and handsome for those interested in foreign accents; his being Scottish. He wasn't very talkative most of the time, but when he did, it seemed intimidating.

"Forgot m'damn money anyways," he said, nudging his head in the direction of the bank located just behind her. He didn't have the patience to walk back and pick it up; it was time to switch his plans for the day.

Helene did not realise she was on people's way, she thought for sure her back was close enough to the bank so she was out of people's way, though one must not have been watching where they were going and walked right into her. This has happened twice now in only a couple of days, sure she was not that invisible. She quickly gained her footing by leaning against the wall with her hands, glancing up to see it was an older man, another man she did not recognise. “Oh, I am fine, thank you.”

She tilted her head when the man spoke, his accent told her he was definitely not from here, it was thick, Helene ran through different accents in her head and the closest one she had was Scottish. “May I help you with anything, Sir? The bank will be back open at one…” She was cut off short by his mumbling she barely caught what he said, so asked the question he had asked earlier “Are you alright?” With a look of concern.

Placing his hands on his hips, he squinted at the door then turned his head rather sharply. He didn't have the time nor patience (as stated before) to wait for the bank to open. Slowly he had begun to pace, but not too far from present company. His hand rubbed at his chin, which was rough today. He felt too lazy to shave. Not that he shaved every day.

Dax took another long drag from the cigarette and stopped just at Helene's left, his booted feet no longer making the thud it had been only seconds ago. Rude wasn't how he wanted to come off as, so it took him a while to ponder on what to say as a reply to her first question.

"No help needed. Forgot m'money anyways," he said, folding his arms tightly across his chest. It was a bit irritating, yes, but one must realize that not everything can stay open 24 hours a day. Not even a bank.

A heavy sigh escaped his lips before he turned to descend the few steps leading to the road, "I'm fine. Had you been a heavy-set woman, I would probably have said otherwise." Dax chuckled at himself. What a mean thing to say, but it was amusing to him to say it.

Helene wasn’t sure what to make of this fellow, she could sense he was bad news her eyes followed his movements she could tell he was not comfortable, neither was she for that matter of fact, crossing her arms. This man wanted her to run the other way, but she found herself still waiting in the same spot, she was able to stand/sit still for as long as she liked.

She kept a close eye on him, noted his suit and his weapon quickly caught her eye for a second, now that made her uneasy, she was not fond of them, she would not call violence on anyone, she knew they were protection but some, more like gangs take it too far. She guessed she took a risk by applying to work at a bank, she would not have done so if she felt differently.

She also watched him turn his back, it did not look like he was going to stay for long, she was somewhat relieved at that, but before he could walk away she cleared her throat "Well the bank closes at 5, if you can not come back today we are open 9 sharp." She informed.

Dax nearly skid against the dirt as he stopped, turning on his heels to face the woman he had just walked away from. He simply finished the cigarette and stamped it out after dropping it on the ground.

"Nine in the morning, thanks. Not sure I'll be getting up that early," he said, finally showing off a small smile, "I haven't been sleepin' well. I have to try an' at least sleep longer than usual tomorrow mornin'."

It was true. Dax hadn't been sleeping well. He wasn't going to admit the constant nightmares and cold sweats he's been waking up to in the middle of the night. Or the thoughts running through his mind that caused him not to fall asleep at other times. If this person were to ask, he wasn't going to share. Bringing up the past wasn't his cup of tea.

Nor was sticking around this long when it seemed inappropriate. She clearly wanted to leave; she looked highly uneasy around him, he could see that. It was plainly obvious that she had better things to do rather than stand here talking to a "creepy" stranger.

"I'll let y'get back to what you were doing. I apologize for takin' up your time," he said, tipping his head and once more turning to walk down the road.

Helene had to smile at his comment about 9 being too early she knew some men like that, it did not surprise her at all. She let her shoulders drop, slightly feeling more comfortable around the stranger, but still suspicious. Being a newcomer in town he musn't know much, she was willing to lend a helping hand, she did not want to push too much though "Well, if you like your sleep we have lunch from twelve to one, and we will be open to help with your needs.

He hadn't been taking up her time, she hadn't much plans for her lunch just waiting around til the hour was up, even though he had been rude earlier, being rude herself was just not in Helene's bones "No need to apologise, Mister, I am happy to help. Have a good day."

She made a slight nod and watch him go on his way, she stood there for a moment longer before figuring it would be best to get something to eat before it was back to work already.

It must have began to seem like he was following, however, he was not. As she walked away, he turned and headed down the road as he was going to, keeping in mind what she had said about the times of the bank being available to him.

Just as any other, Dax could eat an entire cow if his body would let him. He had a few new bucks in his pocket here and there, enough for food and drink for himself. He hadn't noticed that the two had been walking side-by-side, even from a far distance. Whether she did or not, was completely up to her senses.

The restaurant shouldn't be full; it wasn't the only place in town, and surely not everyone in town was hungry during this hour. He knew most were most likely getting shot, doing the shooting, drinking, gambling, or getting laid. The other portion: Eating.

He finally reached the restaurant, stopping for a while just to the right of the door in thought. Something had occurred to him that hasn't crossed his mind in such a long time. A long, LONG time. Years. One of the deputies, years ago, was a long time friend... His thoughts trailed off. This wasn't the time nor the place to be thinking about this. He just wanted some food to replace the emptiness in his gut.

Helene had been on her way to the restuarant, she should have enough time for a bite to eat. Even if some days do go fast, usually the hour break tend to go slow if she was not eating with someone. As she was walking her instict made her glance across the street and she saw a familiar face. The same man that had bumped into her in front of the bank. She stopped for a second before she continued. Like any other newcomer she began to feel curious about him, wondering what his background story was.

She had reached the door of the restuarant to see the man standing in front of her. The slightest smile crept from her lips, watching some few people walk in before walking closer to the entry she stopped next to him, wondering what on earth she should say, "At least we did not bump into each other." She tried to joke, it probably wasn't the best, but it was too late to take it back now."

Dax looked up just in time to see Helene walking towards him. Well, if this wasn't awkward, he didn't know what was.

A chuckle parted his lips as he nodded with a half-grin spreading across his face. "Had we done that I wouldn't be so nice," he said, lifting a brow before shoving the door open. He swung his hand to her, then dipped it under towards the door to let her through first. He said nothing, but thought it: Ladies first.

After Helene had taken a step in the restaurant, Dax followed, letting the door shut behind them both. The place wasn't too cozy, but well-enough to eat it without being annoyed. He wasn't sure whether or not if this was a high-class place. Seating himself would be better, since he was never in the mood to deal with people (Helene being a rare exception for now).

No one stepped forth, so Dax moved on to find himself a seat at the far end of the building by a window. Keeping his mind on anything but this epiphany he had only moments before, he lit another cigarette that he snatched from inside his pocket and sat down to survey the room.

His senses lied to him. It was cozy. Almost fancy.

"Luckily for both of us, we didn't then." Helene gave him a small smile as he opened the door for her "Thank you." She said as she walked in, glancing back slightly to see him walk in behind her. Should he be looking so familiar? She thought as she watched walk to the far end of the restuarant by a window, which just happened to be near where she usually sits.

She glanced around the room then back at the man, he started to look out of place here, she noticed a few customers glancing his way, she sighed, when it comes to newcomers most people would want to know everything. She was guilty of such, but wished some would mind their business, the man looked uncomfortable as it was.

Eventually deciding to make her way to his end, she was going to let him know if he needed anything, anything at all, he did not need to hesitate. Once close enough to his table, she stopped, suddenly wondering if he wanted to be alone, there was only one way to find out "Excuse me Mister, mind some company?" Then quickly adding on "If you preffer to be on your lonesome, then I understand."

Dax leaned over the table on his elbows, eyeballing those who stared at him. Some probably knew him as the outlaw; the quiet yet powerful member of Donnie Dooger's Gang (not to say that the rest of the members are not powerful). However he hadn't been in Shelby for a very, very long time. And at that time it was only a pass-through, so not many would recognize him. The others staring were probably just looking because he was new. Still, it bothered him, and it was rude.

He puffed away on his quirley with a heavy sigh, glancing out of the window to see random objects strew about, then a wooden fence just short enough to look beyond that. A pang of sadness struck his heart. He reached up to place a hand on his chest and closed his eyes for a brief moment.

The voice of the woman he had almost literally ran into twice broke his train of thought. He quickly snapped his eyes up to her face and forced a smile. She was polite, so there was no need for him to be rude. Sometimes, he just couldn't help it though.

Without saying a word, he motioned to the seat across from him. It had only been a two-seat table, but not too small for the two to sit and eat at. Part of him did want to be alone, but the other wanted to at least boost his level in socializing.

"Tell me. What d'your friends call you?" he asked, stamping out the cigarette on the table then leaning back in his chair.

Helene found herself surprised that he motioned towards the seat across from him, she sat down, sitting straight, of course. She glanced out the window then back to the stranger when he asked the question, she watched him stamp out his cigarette then leaned back, she gave him a friendly smile.

"They call me Helene. Helene Ellwood and yourself?"

His eyes moved to the cigarette between his fingers. It shouldn't take this long to put it out, however, he wanted to let her name hang in the air for a bit. He began to try and register the last name: Ellwood.

"Are you th' sister of the deputy?" he asked, clasping his hands together and once again leaning over the table. He didn't ignore the fact that she asked his name, he would answer in due time. As soon as he knew that he was talking to the deputy's sister, he would know that he would need to watch what he said and how he acted around her. It wasn't his time to be put into jail, even if he hasn't done a damn thing to be placed there, yet.

His eyes flickered, searching her features as though he were painted a portrait. He wasn't going to admit that she was pretty, not even to himself. Dax at one point stopped allowing himself to even think about courting again. But he did keep it open to let himself to see whether or not someone was good in looks. Hell, he still wore his wedding ring, as well as a hemp necklace his son made him when he was 8 years old. It was all he had left of them.

She kept a very close eye on him, the way he shifted. He was a quiet fellow, Helene had to admit, different from the one she met the other day. She pin pointed what stood out from the man, a gut feeling was telling her that he could be a lost soul. She gazed at him when he mentioned her brother, she doubted he had been in town for long and had the instict he knew something... she nodded.

"Yes, Mister, James is my older brother, one of the finest deputies you will find." She watched him, and realised she had the urge to ask how he had known, she was for sure she did not know the stranger, she did not forget he hasn't mentioned his name yet "Do you know my brother?"

Dax lifted a hand to his mouth, wiping the corner of his lips as well as underneath. He furrowed his brows, turning to glance at those around them. Some were still staring; even leaning over to whisper into their company's ears. He shook his head in disgust, as if it wasn't plainly obvious that these people were chattering about him.

Slowly he looked back at her, answering her question in all honesty, but keeping the facts simple and short. He didn't want to expose the fact he was part of a gang, or even an outlaw. It just wasn't the type of thing to go bragging about.

"No, I don't," he started, waving down a waiter with a hand, "I jus' wanted to know." A pause, "You can call me Syxx," he said. It was his nickname, and most people called him that anyways.

Helene felt somewhat disappointed, she thought for sure this man knew her brother and had started to feel excited about possibly meeting an old friend of James, him asking the question still had her curious, not many newcomers had asked if she were the deputies sister, not at first meetings anyhow "Fair enough." She replied with a nod, grateful to know his name at last, although an odd one for sure "Pleasure to meet you Syxx."

She looked up to see the waiter had approached them. She was not sure what to do, she felt awkward, like she sometimes does with strangers, so she kept silent for a moment.

"What can I get you?" asked the waiter upon arrival. Dax looked up, then back to Helene, raising his brows. It was she that had to order first. As always, for almost anything it was 'ladies first.'

The waiter looked over at her as well. It must have been uncomfortable being in her shoes at the moment. A stranger staring at her, as well as a waiter, waiting for her order. Dax already knew what he wanted, but did she?

Indeed, he did not know her brother. Just the name and the title that he held was enough for him. If he some how did know James, then it wouldn't be in a friendly fashion.

Helene never liked it when all eyes fell on her, she never had been the one wanting attention. She only wanted a simple meal for lunch and had already knew what she wanted to order but that had slipped her thoughts.

Clearing her throat, looking at the menu to refresh her memory, she looked up at the waiter "I will have a sandwich please." She said pointing to the type she wanted. They were big enough at this restuarant, she didn't want to have too big of a meal, or they'll be no room left for a delicious lunch.

She turned her attention to Syxx, and waits for him to oder.

The waiter jotted down her order with a nod, then turned to Dax.

Dax looked up silently at him, then down at Helene.. Then back up at him. Yes, more strange emptiness around them, so awkward it was just like the other times. The waiter tapped his pencil on the table as to get his attention, thus snapping Dax out of his mini-daze.

"Scotch, up. Steak, well-done.. Slap on some potatoes and whatever else it is you put on there," he said, reaching in his pocket to pull out yet another cigarette. His nickname, for what it's worth, should have been Chimney. He started smoking as a kid, around 15 or so, when his father offered it to him while they were out fishing on the lake near their house. His mother never found out, oh no, she would have killed both of them in a heartbeat.

Dax lit the cig, took a drag, then glanced over at Helene, who looked oddly uncomfortable.

"Y'seem uncomfortable. I wouldn't care if you left to sit elsewhere," he said non-jokingly. He turned and leaned against the windowpane, propping his elbows up for relaxation.

Helene let out a smile when he ordered, it did not come as a surprise that he ordered a large meal. Most men seemed to eat more than women. "Sounds like you haven't eaten all day." She commented.

She waved her hand at his thought of her being uncomfortable, she was, but it didn't mean she wanted to leave "It's quiet a habit of mine, nervous in the presence of strangers. My brothers are forever telling me to relax more." She watched the waiter walk away. The mention of her brothers reminded her of Theo, again. She wanted to know why thoughts of him are creeping back. Why, she had not thought about him since she got over him leaving the family.

She turned her attention to the newcomer, Syxx, was it? Yes, that was his strange name. "So Syxx, if you don't mind me asking, what brings you to New Shelby?" She wasn't a lady to pry, but she felt their conversation going wary, that is one thing she did not like.

Dax glanced out of the window again, then lowered his head to ruffle his hair with a free hand, the cigarette pinched between two fingers in the other. So she was uncomfortable (slightly) but wanted to stay as present company to him? Interesting. He, however, would have just stood and left had he been in her shoes. But he supposed that not everyone was like him.

Resting his chin in the palm of his hand, he thought about how he should answer this. He knew that he had to keep the truth back, so all he could muster was something quite ridiculous, rather.

"Friends," he said, "I have old friends here that I need to get reacquainted with." Upon finishing, the waiter returned with his scotch, setting it on the table with a smile then heading off again to wait on other tables. Dax lifted the glass, surveying its contents as he swirled the liquid around.

"Are you from New Shelby, Miss Helene?"

She knew she was being frowned upon for being in the company of Syxx, she could only guess what the other customers were whispering about. She was fairly well known in New Shelby, most of the Ellwood clan were. It didn't bother her, no, not one bit, he was a newcomer and most likely did not know of anyone, well not quiet, she watched as he mentioned old friends, she wondered if she knew any of them. She knew it was best not to interogate him.

"I am sure your old friends will be happy to see you again." She commented just as the waiter came over with their orders she looked down at her meal, yes, it was lunch, but she was not all that hungry as she thought. She glanced up when he asked the question.

With a nod "Sure am, born and raised here when it was known as Shelby, then had to live with an aunt and uncle for a few years while the town was being re-built."

"I am sure they will be, too," he said with a smirk. The waiter jolted over with the two plates, setting them down at their prospective owners area so they both could start eating. He tossed some silverware on the table for him then sprinted away.

Dax did not care how rude that may have been. He snatched up the fork and knife and instantly began to dig into the steak, shoveling half-mashed potatoes into his mouth beforehand. He was hungry, that was plainly obvious.

"Aunt and uncle? What about your parents?" he asked, slicing into his steak then shoving it into his mouth.

Syxx's smirk did not go unnoticed when he replied about his old friends, so she raised a brow, though not mentioning a word about it. She also frowned when the waiter tossed the silverware down on the table, she glanced back when he sprinted away. She may have a word to him about his manners later. Turning back to her table.

She found herself amused to him eating, it was like he hadn't eaten for days. She decided to get stuck into her sandwhich, she was finally getting hungry. Though when he mentioned her parents she chewed slowly, glancing down until there was no food left in her mouth, then making eye contact with him.

"My parents...bless their heart... past away when I was young. It's just been me and my siblings for some years now."

Dax continued to shove food into his mouth. Her assumptions were correct. It had been days since he'd had a good meal. There were times to his being that emotions took over the whole "you gotta eat" factor. His empty stomach hadn't registered because his mind was already so compact with other thoughts.

Damn, this steak was good. The potatoes, the vegetables, and his scotch (which needed to be refilled) were all fit just for him. Helene, on the other hand, didn't seem to be enjoying much of her sandwich. It was like she was trying to force herself to at least have a little bit of it before heading back to work.

He looked up, one fork in one hand, the knife in the other as his forearms rested against the edge of the table.

"Tragic. I'm sorry to hear that," He said with a cheek full of food. He then respectfully swallowed and took the last sip of his scotch, "Just you an' your siblings, eh? How many Ellwood's are there?"

After a bite of the meal however, she started to enjoy it. She couldn't let it go uneaten, it was probably a good thing she decided on something small, her family always had big meals. She was glad though that Syxx was enjoying his meal.

After swallowing another bite, "Thank you. How many other Ellwood's?" She paused, "Three. Two brothers and a sister." Helene sighed, as much as she wanted to get rid of the thoughts of Theo because he abonded them, she felt somewhat guilty for leaving him out "Actually, three brothers, it's just one of them left us and we haven't heard from him."

"Ah. Abandonment from him leads to you just pushing him out completely," he nodded, wiggling his empty glass in the vision of their waiter. The waiter smiled, nodded, then headed off to grab a bottle.

Dax began to pick his teeth with his tongue, then returned to eating. He stayed silent for quite some time; staring at his food and shoveling it in like he was digging a grave for an enemy. And as the waiter returned, he finally looked up at her.

"How long has it been?" he asked as though the conversation had never stopped.

Helene was not the one who usually pushes people away, they usually push her away. But when it came to her brother, she was not sure how to feel anymore. When he first left she was convinced he would come back, apologise for leaving them and stay with them for good. But as years went by, she grew older and knew better that no such thing was going to happen. Why should she bother announcing that he was her brother when he was not around being so? Syxx was right, Theo had abandoned her family and she was far from happy. If they ever, ever come face to face again, do not expect her to forgive him.

She took a sip for a drink, yes she was taking her time to answer, more to brace herself "Years. I was only a kid." She paused. "It must have been about fourteen years by now."

Dax nearly spit out his food once she had answered him. Fourteen years since she's seen her eldest brother? He did not blame Helene for forgetting about him, or hating him, or whatever it was she was feeling towards him. He, out of all people, deserved it. Being the eldest of siblings requires you to take care of the younger ones: like another parent. Dax knew a few folk who had left their families behind; most without reason.

The waiter returned with his second scotch, taking the other glass and setting down the new one. Dax reached over and took a long sip, "Well, let 'im 'ave it if or when you see 'im again."

Helene found it rather amusing over Syxx's reaction when she revealed exactly how long it has been since Theo left them, and her reaction showed. Taking another bite out of her meal as the waiter came over with another scotch for the newcomer, she swallowed before answering.

With a nod "IF is better, if we haven't seen him since then I highly doubt we will see him again. And believe me, he won't get forgivness out of me so easily." Helene was usually so gullible if any of her siblings made her upset that the next day she would easily forgive them. But Theo, well now, he is a different story.

"What about your other sidekicks? Think they'll be easier on 'im than you?" he asked, sitting back in his seat with an empty plate at the table. Dax smirked, knowing that if he'd been in her shoes, he would act the same. A goo beating would be in play, however. It's not the right thing to do: to leave your family behind. Unless.. UNLESS.. There was a great reason for it (even then there should be no excuse).

For example: If he was threatened to leave his family or else they would all be killed, Dax would leave in a heart beat. He wouldn't be so happy about sore hearts and grudges, though, but it would have been right. Let Helene and the rest just hope that's why he left, and not because he just felt like it.

Dax took another sip of the scotch and looked her over. She was very proper, very quiet. "Well, I suppose that could be enough about your family. But lets not talk about mine."

Helene stopped to think. She hadn't thought about how her family may react, surely they will react the same as her "They won't be happy, that's for sure."

She finished off her lunch, glanced up when he spoke 'Enough about her family but lets nto talk about mine.' This amused her. It seemed, with men, they were interested in her family, and never talk about their own. "And why is that Syxx? Why were you interested in my family but you refuse to talk about yours?"

Dax glanced up, setting the glass on the table and leaning over to get more comfortable. He quirked a brow and wrinkled his lips (which made him look angry, in which he was not) in thought. He wasn't sure why he wanted to know about her family. It never crossed his mind to think, 'Hm, I should ask about her family.' The subject just happened to pop up in conversation and grow from there.

He sighed, tapping his glass with a free hand while the other rested on the table. It took him quite a while to respond to her question.

"The subject jumped, that's all," he said with a shrug before finishing with, "I'm not fond of bringing up the past about mine. With what had happened, I do not wish to look like I need pity."

Did Helene hit a nerve? To her, his expression said it all. She don't usually pry on other people, only when they tend to pry on her family, she asks about them. She wasn't even sure if she wanted to know what Syxx's past has been like.

She glanced down to see her meal and drink had all finished, then looked back up to Syxx again when he spoke, "Some pasts are best to be kept in the past, I am sorry if I have brought up any negativity." She let out a sigh, the hour had gone very quickly, "Unfortantly, the lunch hour can not last all day." She said with a small smile in hope to lighten the mood a tad.

"Y'hit no nerve of mine, lass. Do not worry yourself over a question. Anyone could 'ave asked me," he said with a small smile before leaning back. Yes, the time was almost up; parting ways knowing of a new acquaintance was a plus. Especially the sister of a deputy.

The waiter returned to ask if anything needed to be refilled. Dax responded with a simple 'no' then handed the man a large bill with tip through a handshake. "You were better than the one I 'ad before," said Dax. The waiter grinned from ear to ear, apparently this made his day.

Soon after, Dax turned back to Helene and nodded. "If you 'ave to get back t'work, don't let me keep you."

"I am glad, Syxx, I would hate to think otherwise." She returned a smile, and it was not a small nor uneasy one.

Helene watched Syxx with the waiter for a moment, and was curious when they handshaked, it was obvious Syxx was also giving him a tip, she chuckled, they were not together for a formal meal so she did not expect the man to pay for her, she got out the correct money for her meal and also paid the waiter, she watched him walked away before turning back to Syxx "You made the man's day."

"Yes I should get going." She paused. "It was a pleasure meeting you."

"Aye, so did you," he said, lighting yet another cigarette while pointing to her then the waiter who had just walked away, "You added to the tip. I 'ad already paid for you."

He shoved the butt into his mouth and struck a match, letting it burn the opposite end before he pinched the flame out. Dax took a long drag; most smokers would say that a cigarette after a meal was like dessert. Actually, every smoker he had known had mentioned it and it was well agreed upon.

"I feel that if a woman is in the presence of a man, that she should and will not pay for needs," he stated, letting the smoke emit from his nostrils and parted lips. He did not smile, nor wink; not even a smirk spread across his face. He was dead serious. Unlike the cig for dessert, not many would agree with him... But most have.

Helene blushed, she had a feeling that Syxx may have paid for her, as she knew that was tradition, but she felt slightly uncomfortable when it came to strangers. She tried to cover her blush with a chuckle "Well it sure was that young man's lucky day. But you didn't have to pay for me, honestly."

She watched him and felt he was being sincerer enough and start to feel somewhat guilty "We barely know each other, Syxx, but thank you, maybe I will remember that if we meet again."

He nodded, rubbing just below his lower lip with a finger as he looked at her. Yes, she had blushed, but that didn't stand out as much as she might have thought. Dax knew that things just.. happened.

He snorted, taking a puff from the cigarette before speaking in chuckles. "Yes, I did. Had I not I would 'ave claimed and labeled myself a fuckin' prick," he said, leaning over the table, then added, "Excuse my language."

"Anyways being acquaintances doesn't matter. I know your name, that's all I need to spare a few dollars for your sake." Dax paused, looking around the room at the other occupants. "You should get back to work," he said quietly, finally looking at her, "Like I said, don't let me keep you."

"Fair enough." Helene sighed, there was no point in arguing 'tradition', she let a smile slip to show him she didn't meant it as a bad thing. She raised a brow when he swore, she didn't like swearing, but that didn't mean she was not used to it. She had brothers of course sometimes they let some words slip "You are excused...only slightly."

She nodded, standing up now, "Yes, I better, or I will be late. I presume I will be seeing you at the bank soon enough?" Not forgetting she heard him mumbled he had forgotten his money when they first met.

"Yeah, fair enough," he said, snubbing out his cigarette with a smile. Helene had to get back to work. Although he wanted the company, he wasn't going to make her stay. It had been a while since he had a real "sit-down" with someone for a meal, or for anything. He wasn't always the type to do this. It in fact almost annoyed him.

As she stood, he did the same - not to leave, but to be polite. It was courteous for a man to stand at the table once any woman would, no matter how many times or for what.

"It was a pleasure, Ms. Ellwood," he said, bowing slightly as he placed a hand at his stomach, "Perhaps you will."

Dax wasn't about to say when or for what: robbery or deposit. Soon enough, she might know.
