Atmospheric Changes Worry Scientists
The scientific community is meeting at a summit to discuss recent natural disasters. While events- such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions- are generally unpredictable and not uncommon, experts feel that the increased number and severity of the latest weather related crises is a worrying phenomenon. The summit will discuss probable causes and try to draft solutions to counter act controllable and preventable issues.
Russia to Increase Military Presence in the Ukraine
Protests continue in Ukraine after a deal was reached by Ukraine's president with Russia that will allow Russia to extend its armed presence in the former Soviet Republic. Protestors feel that this is against the Ukraine's national interest and that the country might lose its sovereignity. The deal is apparently in direct violation with the Ukrainian constitution, which does not allow foreign military bases on Ukrainian soil after the year 2017. Many political leaders feel thatthis is a strange move given Russia's recent accord with the United States to dissassemble their nuclear weapons satellites.
Mandatory Mutant Registration Halted in Senate
The Senate voted against the proposed Mandatory Mutant Registration Bill today, citing issues with tax legislation tacked on during the bill's run through the House. The bill, which only barely received the votes necessary in the House to move on, was struck down in the Senate. Mutant rights activists are touting the bill's failure as a victory, but it is one that their proponents believe will be short lived. "It's a fluke," says Friends of Humanity chairman, "And the bill will be rewritten and sent through again. Just wait and see." In the meantime, the bill has, in fact, gone to a conference committee to work out a compromise with the proposed legislation.
IHF Benefit
In Harlem tonight Daniel Rand, formely of the Rand Corporation, hosted a benefit for Immortal Hope Fund. Rand caused quite a stir when, two years ago, he dismantled his corporation and turned it into a charity organization before virtually disappearing from society life. He is now the owner of the central Harlem School of Thunder Martial Arts Academy, where tonight's fundraiser was hosted. The Rand Corporation is now a charity that provides aid to inner city youth and homeless. Donations to the Corporation, or the Immortal Hope Fund, can be made at the company's website or by calling 555-5245.
