That particular question required a level of honesty that meant draining his glass and gesturing for another. Sure, there were all kinds of bullshit excuses he could offer and he very nearly did, but then he shook his head and opted for the blunt truth. "What the hell happened is I didn't trust you enough and then abandoned you." Nick had done it to everybody, when he disappeared, but it was worse with Jess. If anyone would've understood, could've helped him, it was Jessica. More than that, they'd had a thing, a real meaningful thing, he thought, and Fury had just thrown that away like it was nothing. It had all come to naught, anyway, because here he was again in the same old situation with the same old shit. He tipped his empty glass at her in salute.
"And then I felt like shit about it and didn't know how to fix it. So I didn't. Figured ignoring it was better. Pretended I was just letting the past go, instead of hurting you. You deserved better from me, Jess. I'm sorry." Fury never apologized for anything. Maybe he was just getting old, feeling old. Maybe he was just fucking tired.
