The warm spring breeze was just what she needed. It was a nice break from New York spring which felt more like a cold fall that year. Her stomach her heart, gosh, everything felt like it was filled with butterflies. It wasn’t just the concert, in fact she was proud of it, it was going well it was a packed park all there to support mutant rights and Dazzler. Maybe this was what she’d do for a living if Shield didn’t want to keep her after all, she’d be a promoter a champion for indie mutant bands. No she was nervous because he was coming back with beer and it seemed no matter what silly thing he’d go off to do he’d come back and her heart would skip a beat and she’d forget to breathe. Was it a date? The thought had followed her from New York. The whole road trip had been one very long experience of her just waiting for him to make a move. It was unfamiliar territory she usually made the first move if it had been any other guy they’d have screwed the entire time. But no they slept in separate rooms and somehow still had a blast. She’d force him to stop the car so they could take pictures of the largest, tallest, smallest stuff in the world and they were the only ones in the world so they had to stop and take a picture. They had to stop and take a picture and Pietro had to look excited. It was the rule. And the moments in the car were only more confusing. His hand had brushed against hers and when she fell asleep on his should he didn’t move her but then they’d argue about silly buddy things like a sketchiness of motels and her small bladder, it was amazing they even made it to the concert in time. But they did. And here they were again, sitting side by side on the grass as the sun went down, and his hand was touching hers but this time it felt more deliberate. Her heart was racing, it felt like his hand was there for hours. So this was a date? She turned to look at him and before she could get the question out he kissed her.
“I love you.” He said as he pressed his forehead against hers.
It wasn’t right, it wasn’t how it happened at all. It was a dream, her favorite dream. The first date dream where they didn’t know how in love they were. As the lucidness washed over her she smiled and enjoyed the feeling of his hand on her waste and his lips on hers. If she had died in her sleep this would be her heaven. Just the two of them on the blanket. She opened her mouth to say it back but was cut off by a faint cry of a baby. It grew louder and louder until it sounded like it was coming from the stage and then louder until it drowned out everything else. The ringing in her ears woke her up. There was no warm sun or grass under her feet. It was just her, her sound machine, and a dull pain in her stomach. She was use to the aches and pains by now and usually the cramping went away after a walk. So much for a peaceful sleep, the twins must’ve been awake.
“Guess I better get used to this,” she supposed as she rubbed her stomach but no sooner than she put the robe on she froze. Something warm was running down her leg. She looked down and was horrified to discover a pool of liquid at her feet. It wasn’t piss. That had only happened once unfortunate time when she didn’t waddle fast enough to the bathroom but this felt different.
“Crap!” She said out loud. She was going into labor.
It was too soon, she had another week surely she looked at the calendar, right there she had circled the expecting dates. So this was impossible, for Pete’s sake it didn’t even feel like labor. Surely there would be more screaming, more pain, not just an irritating cramp that was back now and this time a little stronger. She hissed and steadied herself on the back of a chair while a nervous PB whined. Okay. She thought. This had to be it, why else would this be happening. She needed to not panic and call for help. Though if these were supposed to be contractions she was handling them like a champ.
“Hey so if anyone is out there, I think I’m-gaaaaaaah,” She hissed into the communicator. She had hit everyone’s number. Someone had to be awake. “ My water broke. Just uh letting you know. Y’know what everyone go back to bed. Medical bay I’ll just walk these cramps are like bullshit anyway.”
