There is not a truth existing which I fear- Characters: Kurt, Noriko Setting: Streets of New York City Content: Nothing unseemly Summary: Kurt makes a new acquaintance during a trip into the city
The Halloween season and New York City were a wonderful combination. In this city particularly, where the general population was used to the bizarre and super human, Kurt could walk around more freely while garning fewer stares. Around Halloween he could hide in plain sight. “Costume makeup-” he would say to anyone who looked too closely or seemed particularly afraid, and the answer seemed to placate them. Even if they realized the truth, it was always easier for humans to accept the less fantastical explanation. It had been the same during his time in the Munich circus. The Incredible Nightcrawler, straight from Bavaria, marvel at his amazing tricks then go home and forget all about the furry blue acrobat. He wasn’t real after all, he was only a performer.
Kurt’s destination today was St. Peter’s cathedral where an old friend of his served as a deacon. He took the scenic route, clawed hands in the pockets of his overcoat as he strolled down Park Avenue on his way to Lexington. Paused at a cross walk waiting for a light to change he winked down at a child that turned to tug on his mother’s skirt. The mother glanced up at Kurt and a look of shock crossed her face before she blinked slowly and turned away again with a half shrug and a word of reprimand to her child. No horror, no screams of terror, just a muttered, “honey, it’s rude to stare.” Kurt smiled to himself and crossed the street to the opposite sidewalk and into a crowd of people that only gave him cursory glances. It was nice to know that at least here in New York Kurt could be sure he was not the weirdest thing anyone would see on the street today.
