"Well, well. Red's fallen in love."
Max hadn't said that loud enough for anyone other than Lillie to hear, and he had been rewarded for his observation with a heeled shoe's press against his foot. But there hadn't been any complaints about Lillie's changed mood. There was a considerable lift in her step and a brightness in her smile, and vampire or not it wasn't hard to guess why she was happy. It was ridiculous, poetic, and obvious all at once.
She was in love.
When Lillie had left the club, she'd gone to the bed and breakfast Joseph currently called home. Sunrise was coming and she wouldn't wake him for only a few moments' time, no matter how much she might have wanted to. Instead she'd left an envelope underneath the door. Inside was a key, a copy of the one to her apartment, along with a note.
Darling,
I have tonight off, if you want to come by. Perhaps I can help you with another chapter?

Lillie had gone home then, quickly and with dawn right behind her. It was true that the sun would burn her skin, but it took a little time for the weariness to overcome her. Usually she fell asleep while reading in bed, and this time the book had been a leather bound volume of Romeo and Juliet.
She made it to the second scene of the second act before falling asleep, the book tucked against her.
