Who: Mark Davidson - Open
What: Tending to flowers
Where: His nursery
When: Friday afternoon
Rating: TBD
Status: Incomplete ; open

Mark Davidson was probably one of the few people who actually liked to get up with the rising sun. Just when the light started to touch everything, and he felt a bit like he'd stepped into the Lion King, everything was waking up including himself. Before he'd ever had his coffee, or done anything really, Mark went out on his porch. He'd sit there for a while, the length of time didn't really matter. Just until he felt like moving again. Those were the times when he was in his most natural state.

If he could have melted into the earth then, he would have.

Once he rose, the scent of the dew making him wake up more than any caffeine ever could, he'd water his own flowers. The ones he kept especially for himself. He had an affinity for the illegal ones, and so far no one had ever found them. That's how he liked to keep it. He talked to his flowers. More so at home than at the shop. No one who worked for him needed to think their boss had flipped out.

After a sufficient time in his own place, he got showered, dressed and headed to the shop. He was always the first to arrive and the last to leave. Today was no exception. It had been relatively busy all day though. Being summer, and the impending heat made people want to get things done in a rush.

As people passed him by, he tended to the flowers that were for sale, keeping an eye on those that passed by.

She'd named her Cat.

Cat was a stray who seemed to like Ilsa's porch. Her fur was a peppered grey, unkempt but scrupulously clean, and though she was aloof and wary, Ilsa didn't think she was feral. Cat seemed to prefer at least ten feet of distance at all times, but she ate the food left out for her. She liked to curl up on the cushion of the porch swing, or sit at the edge of the dock while Ilsa swam.

Passing the flower shop Friday afternoon, Ilsa got a rather silly idea.

She wandered around the aisles of plants for awhile, not particularly concerned with getting to her purpose - everything was beautifully tended, and it was simply a pleasant place to be. After awhile, though, she decided to ask for help.

One person, whom Ilsa presumed to be an employee (looking both quietly competent and increasingly desperate), was already engaged with another customer, somehow managing to remain patient with the cheerful bridezilla who kept changing her flower order for her wedding. Ilsa thought it best to steer clear of them. She approached the gentleman tending flowers instead.

"Pardon me," she introduced herself to Mark, simply because it truly did feel like an interruption - among the plants he seemed to be among friends. "Er. Do you have catnip?"

Hearing the familiar tell-tale signs of a customer with a question, Mark gestured for a moment so that he could turn off the hose and actually hear her. Once that was done, he smiled slightly.

"Sorry, it's hard to hear over the noise. Catnip?" He actually had to think for a moment. Which was sad because he owned the place. After a moment, he ah'd. "Oh yes, I think we do have some of that in stock. Come with me."

He set the hose on the ground and then lead the way through the store towards one section.

The section seemed to be for various things. Butterfly gardens, flowers that attracted certain types of birds, things like that.

He picked up one of the plants and looked it over. "Do you know how to use the plant? Or rather which parts of it?"

She followed him through the nursery aisles, though she found herself easily distracted. Like most fey, she had a deep appreciation for beauty. Everything was lovely.

"Not in the least," she replied equably, her fingers absently grazing a blue, velvet-soft flower nearby. "I had rather hoped it would come with instructions, but barring that, had planned to consult Google."

"It's actually pretty simple. Though of course you probably want to put this somewhere where cats can't get to it or they'll be all over it." He laughed a little.

"In any case, when it flowers, you cut the whole thing off at the base here," he pointed to the place on the plant. "Then hang it up somewhere to dry. It will grow back fairly quickly."

"Handy," she said with a smile, pleased. "There's not a lot you can say that about."

Ilsa lifted one of the smaller plants, holding the ceramic pot by the bottom. "But I rather thought the cat was the point, yes? This is a gift, but it wouldn't be much of one if I kept it from her." She frowned. "Can it harm her in too great doses, then?"

Mark smiled slightly, "Well of course you can leave it in the plant and let the cat get to it if that's what you want. Though the cat will probably try to dig it up." And hey, if she could deal with that, then by all means, she should just leave it for the cat to do as he wished.

"Not harm really, but it can make cats much more aggressive if they inhale too much. Oh and if there's a lot of drooling, don't worry."

She nodded, holding it by the base of the pot carefully, and gamely hoping that it was a hardy, independent sort of plant - she really wasn't the best person to put living creatures in her care. She and Cat got on so well because the creature could best be termed her neighbor.

"Alright then. If - do you have a moment?" she asked, nodding toward the registers. Meaning, did he mind ringing her up instead of sending her to the other employee, who still appeared to be wrapped up in happy bridal hell. "I can wait, of course," she added politely, and meant it. She felt almost guilty for having drawn him away from his task - true that he worked here (she hadn't yet figured out that he owned the place), but there was just something about him that said it was more for the plants than the customers. It was intriguing, but she was also leery of intruding somehow.

"Oh no that's fine," he assured her and followed her over to the register. "It's my nursery, I probably should be able to do what I want." He laughed slightly, and now she knew that he owned the place. "Make sure you put that in as much sunshine as you can muster. Partial sun is okay, but not full shade."

He started to ring her up, quite quickly since it was only the one plant. Some people bought loads and loads of things. "And water once a day unless you find out it's not getting enough and then twice. The total is seven eight two."

"Oh," she said, her face falling sort of comically. She'd kind of hoped the rain would take care of it. "Alright, then; easy enough. And here you are" - with the arm not currently holding the plant, she pulled a crumple of bills from her pocket, laid them all out on the counter, chose an appropriate combination, and paid. She shoved the remainder back in her pocket, and a little water dripped from her hair, though her hair was dry.

She watched him complete the transaction. "I should have gathered," she said after a moment. "That the place was yours, rather." She smiled. "It seems suited to you." He tasted brown and green, like dirt and earth and steadiness - she thought he might be supernatural, but surrounded by plants she couldn't really be sure.

Only if it rained every day, he was sorry to say. Or well he would if he was asked. Mark took the money from her and counted it out before putting it in the till and getting her change and her receipt. Thankfully it said his name on the name tag. Something he really hated wearing, but it was necessary. Otherwise people didn't know he worked there at all, and he didn't seem friendly or something.

He saw the water drip from her hair and looked curiously for a moment before shaking his head. Interesting. Maybe she was supernatural? Well it was hard not to come right out and say it when they were supposed to be 'out in the open' or what have you. "It's that obvious? Well I do spend most of my time in the earth," he admitted, handing her the change and the receipt. "I'm.. I'm an elemental. I'm sure you can guess which kind."

Her eyebrows flew up as she took her change. In the earth?

"I suppose I can," she said. "Even more suited than I thought." Another droplet fell from her hair, and this time she saw it. Her smile went a bit wry, and she looked back at him. "Though I didn't mean to imply that your being an elemental is obvious" - as if the obvious sign of her not-damp hair was embarrassing, or something - "just that you seem to have a strong affinity for your surroundings."

Mark gave her a small smile, "It's quite all right. I knew what you meant." It was kind of obvious. And so was her hair. "As I see that you have for yours.." He wondered if it had to do something with all the water around that was feeding the plants. But he wasn't rude, and he wasn't going to ask. Just casually mention it. She was completely free to just ignore his comment or smile and nod.

Though he knew that she wasn't a water elemental, he'd be able to recognize one of his own kind.

She cocked her head, vaguely charmed by the lack of nosiness, though of course it could just be lack of interest or curiosity. But she wasn't fond on leaving imbalances behind her, even of information, so she volunteered a reply:

"I have," she confirmed good-naturedly. She pointed to her hair with a bit of an eye-roll. "It does this on occasion, when I've been in the ocean recently. Provided I'm not feeling too human, I suppose." She nodded her head toward the aisles she'd mostly been exploring before seeking his help - ordinary plants being watered by a fine mist, and a few aquatic plants in a small garden pond. "Can be exacerbated by prolonged contact with any form of water. Not just salt. I am a selkie," she added, by way of explanation.

He'd learned long ago that if you went snooping and prying into other people's things, you were going to find more than you bargained for. Or at least find something you didn't want to know. Usually he kept all of the personal questions for later.

Mark ah'd slightly, though he wasn't quite sure what she meant about that. Well no, he did. Just not in the way it pertained to hair being watered. Though her explanation made infinitely more sense. "I see, well that's remarkable. I have to admit that I'm kind of glad that dirt doesn't fall off of me. That would probably drive away business." He gave a short laugh. "I haven't really met too many of your kind. I'm Mark." He put out his hand. Even though his name tag said who he was.

"So I see," she said. She shifted the plant to her nondominant arm and shook his hand, her grip gentle but not weak. "Pleasure. I am called Ilsa." She smiled. "I have not met many of your kind, either. And it has been a very long time."

"Well then it's lovely to meet you, Ilsa," he assured her. Right, the fey had incredible longevity. He got that. "There's a few of us around, at least that I know about." He shrugged slightly and released her hand. "Though I doubt it's been as long." He wasn't that old, even though he kind of looked it.

Her eyes lit up with interest. "But how long might that be?" she asked, with absolutely no thought for the potential rudeness of the question. She didn't know anything about the lifespan of an elemental, and was just interested in how much change he'd seen.

"Only 52 years, madame," he answered not really finding it that rude. Though he knew better than to ask a woman about her age. That was just asking for trouble. But he looked fifty two. Or so he thought. "We age slower than humans but not by much.. maybe double the time? I'm apparently pretty young for an elemental."

She wouldn't have minded the question, either. With humans she plain didn't care (she looked late-twenties, why would she?), and around other supernaturals, except in professional situations, she wasn't really past the ten-year-old stage of being delighted to be older than someone else.

She smiled. It wasn't even mean. "You are a young one, then," she said. "But you're like me - having been here when this place was nowhere in particular. Most of us as can say so are human."

Actually Mark longed for the days when he could be older than most people. He too was in the ten-year-old stage except for the fact that he was relatively young. Even if he looked pretty old. But still, his mother would have slapped him if he had been caught asking a woman her age.

He nodded and smiled, "Yeah a bit. Really? How long have you lived here?" He was curious. Maybe that meant that his family knew her family. Somewhere down the line anyway.

"I've been in town nearly twenty years now, but my clan settled in the harbor -" She frowned. "I'm not sure precisely when, but it was at some point between the Great Wars."

"We're not the only ones, of course, but if it's around here you'd seen my kind, it may well have been one of my clan - they haven't been after coming to the surface so much, this past decade, but generally we have curious blood."

Oh yes, she was definitely older then, because she didn't really look much older than twenty as it was. He nodded a bit, "Then perhaps indeed some of your people knew my people. Since mine have been around just about that long as well. My parents are from here too. My last name is Davidson, if that makes any difference."

Though now that he was thinking about it, he had heard about selkies before in the area. He supposed that was them. But no he hadn't heard anything about them lately. "Ah well that makes a bit of sense. I think I do recall remembering something about selkies in the area."

She couldn't immediately place the name, so for the moment she addressed the 'selkies in the area' comment.

"Fair enough. The crossing from Ireland was not particularly enjoyable...a good half of us wandered up for a time after we first arrived here - bit desperate for a break from the sea, perhaps; at least I was. We may at first have made a stronger impression than we meant to. More lasting, at any rate. Lucky that's faded some in the course of a century, I suppose -" She blinked. "Wait. Are you related to Claude Davidson?"

"I suppose perhaps if there was an international supernatural council, we might all know each other better." Or maybe there was and he just didn't know about it. It wouldn't be the first time that Mark was in the dark about something like that. He nodded a bit, "That's understandable. Sometimes you just need a change."

"Um, it's possible I suppose? Actually Davidson is my mother's name since I never knew my father, but I tend to get my lineage from him." He shrugged a little. "So it's entirely possible."

Ilsa laughed. "There are likely dozens of such councils, and none of them talk to each other. Or even know of each other. Sharing information doesn't seem to sit well with most of us," she added dryly, meaning 'us' in the general, 'all supernaturals' sense.

"Ah, I see - that makes more sense, then, actually, as I hadn't heard Claudius was any sort of elemental. He was an acquaintance of a cousin of mine," she explained, "some sixty years ago."

Actually, Claude Davidson had helped Ilsa's cousin recover a lost sealskin - and given Ilsa's current circumstances, she was inclined to like anyone with any possible connection to a person like that. She beamed at Mark. It was potentially a little weird.

"That seems a bit like the case. At first I couldn't imagine there not being one, but then no one ever wants to talk about things like that, if there are things like that." He shook his head. It didn't make any sense to him, but then maybe he wasn't the right guy for the job.

Mark hm'd and tried to think back in his family tree somewhere. "He's probably some kind of cousin, or third cousin I would imagine." He didn't know many except for his own immediate family.

"I suppose this place is smaller than we realized." If everyone was connected to each other.

"It was sixty years ago, though it may not be anymore, not with so many new people." She shrugged. "My mate's brother had dealings with an earth elemental, in…" she trailed off. She wasn't sure. "Well, it was before twenty years ago. But he was in Portland at the time, and in any case, I don't know his name." She smiled. "Likely no connection there."

She laughed. "It is interesting, though, the kind of connection and cooperation developing. We're actually learning about each other. Though an international council might be somewhat ambitious," she added dryly. "The governing council here at the Cove seems difficult enough. Among the fey alone - given how often seelie and unseelie are at war, it seems unfair to give us only one representative. For so many species to work together successfully, they probably have to employ a crippling level of bureaucracy. Which isn't exactly what comes naturally." She rose her brows. "Can you imagine how an international version would function?"

That was very true. Davidson wasn't the most rare name in the world. He knew quite a number of people who had it. "Yes sadly we're not all related," he said with a laugh. Though that would have been kind of amusing if it was. Weren't fey all supposed to be related? Well very distantly, she supposed. Though he didn't know much about the fey and their family dynamics.

"I suppose really you have no choice when you're all kind of stuck together in one place. But no, I wouldn't say that would be the case any time soon. Not enough trust." Not that he blamed them for not trusting each other. Though he'd not really run into a lot of problems with other species of course. "I can only imagine what that must be like, having everyone fighting all the time." He didn't really want to know exactly. "It would be pure chaos, I'm sure."

That sounded exactly like this place, definitely. Mark laughed a little and nodded. "That about sums it up." He thought about her question though for a moment and then shrugged. "I don't really know? She rose an eyebrow. "The quintessential specimen, then," she said archly. She shrugged. "You might go to one of the meetings, see if it might suit you, too. They're open to us all." Ilsa went to all of them, just to observe and listen. Partly because she was a little bit paranoid, so information was important to her, but mostly because the whole process was so interesting.

"Perhaps one day I'll go. Just to see for myself." She made him feel like he was the only one who hadn't gone to a meeting and found out for himself. If it came time to have a vote or something like that. But other than that, he wasn't quite sure that he was ready for all of that. "What do they go over in those meetings anyway?" now that they were talking about it, it seemed like a good opportunity to ask.

Watching him, she thought she may have misstepped somewhere, though she wasn't quite sure how.

"Concerns of the public, for the most part," she answered, seriously and somewhat less animated, "shared by Cove citizens who show up to present them." She considered. "There are also announcements on occasion - attending the public meetings is informative - but the open forum is not usually designed as a method for disseminating sensitive information, by any means."

It wasn't anything bad, maybe he was the only one that hadn't gone. He wasn't upset about it or anything.

He really didn't have much idea what she was talking about so he just kind of nodded. It was probably a fey thing. "Ah I see," he said a little and nodded. "Well I certainly hope so. Then perhaps I've done my job." With a little nod of his head, he wandered back over to finish watering his plants.
