Who: Shinji Kawada, Henry Doyle
When: Night.
Where: Shinji Kawada’s apartment
Rating: Pg
Status: Open and ongoing.

It hadn’t taken much digging to find information on Graeme Ecclesfeld. Almost everyone had a digital trail these days unless they actively and regularly erased it. Graeme, obviously, had either not bothered to attempt erasure or had been uniquely inept at doing so. The trail that Graeme had left, however, was worrying and it took Henry only the most basic of searches to trace the missing vampire’s trail to Seattle and what precisely it was that had called him there. All roads led to where Henry had feared they might; going further would be dangerous and would certainly require outside assistance with access to more formal channels of inquiry.

Evening found Henry outside of Shinji Kawada’s apartment. It was a relatively safe neighborhood a short distance from the city centre, the sort of neighborhood where a non-resident vampire could spend quite a bit of time waiting outside a private residence without raising too many eyebrows. The only person who had even inquired as to why Henry was sitting so long and so patiently on the retaining wall outside the complex was an elderly woman, a human, who had cautioned Henry with a wag of her wrinkled finger to not cause any trouble for “that nice young man; such a handsome boy.”

Henry had promised faithfully to not harm Shinji in any way possible, then had sat and listened to the woman explain the intricacies of her family history and circle for over an hour and a half before she had retreated inside with a cluster of her friends for a game of mahjong. She had returned once to deliver a small paper plate of freshly baked sugar cookies, which Henry now ate in between sips of blood from the thermos he had brought with him.

It was a rare opportunity for Shinji to have the day off, especially with the bodies piling up, and other little things that had been slipping in through he cracks. He had managed to sneak off for a few hours with Toshi, enjoying an early dinner with the teacher before the elemental had to go back for parent-teacher conferences.

He had stopped to pick up cat food, and a few other groceries, since he had offered to make a meal for Toshi over the weekend. Provided he didn't get called out. Bags in hand, he turned down his street, not stopping, but taking in his surroundings, seeing someone leaning against the wall. A few moments later he recognized the man as Henry.

"Mr. Doyle." Nodding at the vampire. "Would you like to come in?" Noting the sugar cookies, and the open window above them. Anything the vampire had to say, Shinji was certain it wouldn't be good for anyone to overhear.

"Thank you for making my guest comfortable ma'am." Loud enough for the women, who had gotten quiet at his approach. Keys in hand. "I hope you weren't waiting long Mr. Doyle." A pause, "Also I hope you don't mind cats."

"Thank you," murmured Henry as the unnamed magic that barred his kind from entering homes uninvited faded. Each vampire felt the spell, if indeed it was a spell, differently. For Henry the removal of the barrier always felt like a cold breeze flooding in from a newly opened window. It was suddenly easier to breathe somehow and each breath made him feel heavy as if in an over oxygenated environment. He shivered reflexively, although in truth not so much as a blade of grass wavered.

"I hope I'm not interrupting your evening." He gestured to the bags of groceries. "I apologize if I am. I know my arrival is unexpected."

He made no offer, however, to leave and return later.

"You haven't." As they went up the stairs to Shinji's apartment. "I'm free for the evening." He unlocked his front door, allowing the vampire to come in after him. "Welcome in."

His apartment, clean and modern had a simple layout. "Come back into the kitchen. Is there anything I can get you?" He placed the bags on the counter, turning his attention to Henry.

"Or is this not a social visit?"

Henry shivered again. Frowned. "I'm afraid this is not a social visit. One of our people has a problem. I need assistance through official police channels so that I can do some further digging. I may be erring on the side of caution here, but these are dangerous people." He paused, frowning further, then met Shinji's gaze. "If the individuals involved believe you are investigating this matter out of personal interest rather than professional interest, you too might be in danger. Our kind is at risk with these people. Given that, I will of course understand if you prefer to remain uninvolved and ignorant."

"Then I'll just have to investigate it as a professional." Shinji replied. "You see Mr. Doyle, I can't simply walk away from something. It's who I am, goes above the whole 'protect and serve' thing."

He shrugged, opening a tin of cat food and plopping it unceremoniously into the bowl. "Not to sound cliche, and forgive me, it's one I'd use on someone else, I'm used to the danger aspect. Three days ago we were sent to retrieve a near feral wolf from Orting. Since the alpha still isn't fit to travel." Normally pack handled that, but with the alpha still recovering, the police force had been tapped for it. "The wounds still haven't healed completely."

"However," turning his attention back to Henry as a fluffy white cat appeared, going for the food bowl. "You don't have to speak in code. What's got you worked up?"

"Are you familiar with a Seattle-based organization, they claim the title 'aid society,' that goes by the name of Second Chance?"

He had tried to keep his expression and voice neutral but was successful only in the later. Anger flashed briefly in his eyes and his fangs descended momentarily; a glint of pointed white where there hadn't been any before. Second Chance was a self-professed vampiric reclamation service; they claimed to be able to break vampires of their 'addiction' to blood and lead normal, non-vampiric lives. The organization had initially been viewed by the established vampire community as an excellent method for separating fools from their money. Rumors about the disturbing, violent, and sometimes lethal holy water 'treatments' had, however, had changed the popular perspective to one that was suspicious, fearful, and increasingly intolerant.

"Not particularly." Shinji shook his head. "In LA there's a large separation between dhampir and vampire. The mothers would have known about it before any of the children would have."

Taking in the vampire's agitation. "A bit nutty, but all groups tend to be a bit off."

Henry shifted where he stood, moving his weight from one foot to the other as his agitation level rose. 'Flexed his shoulders once. Twice. Settled for pacing back and forth across the living room.

"This group has a reputation for being more than 'a bit off.' There are whispers of deaths connected with them; of horrible maiming. They promise a 'release' from the need for blood. Their treatments are closely guarded secrets but the few who manage to escape and live speak of holy water treatments. The stories run the gamut; everything from progressive dosing to water boarding with the stuff. They were involved in the November Seattle slaying; it was in the papers awhile ago. Vampires supposedly attacked and killed their aide workers."

"A vampire from the Cove has ties to the group through Sanguine Corp. Blood supplier and corporate purchaser as far as I can tell. The individual, Graeme Ecclesfeld, has since gone missing. I can follow him to Seattle and to Second Chance, but I keep stalling out there."

"Water boarding? With Holy water?" Shinji's eyes tracked the irritated vampire's movements, not at all on edge. "I made the mistake of touching it once, I can't imagine a full vampire surviving a water boarding session with the stuff."

He made note of the missing vampire's name, intending to check the records that he had access to, though he had a sinking suspicion that Henry had already done so.

"What would you like me to do Mr. Doyle." Voice gentle, questioning. "I'm not sure how much success I'd have through legal channels if you haven't had much on your own." He leaned against the door-frame, watching. "I'm more than willing to help you--I just need some direction."

Henry continued pacing, his shoulders visibly tense despite the cover of both a sweater and a jacket. "I believe," he began tentatively, "that Graeme Ecclesfeld may have been involved with the November attacks. There's nothing specifically linking him although the timelines match. Seattle is, of course, a big city. He may well have been elsewhere at the time. But I believe there is something there. Or fear there may be."

He glanced warily at the dhampir. "I do not need the official legal channels. I can access any reports I need without difficulty. I need to know what information was left out of the reports; either intentionally or because it did not seem important at the time. The police is, I am told, a brotherhood. I need you to capitalize on that relationship on my behalf; gather any police information about the attacks, Graeme, or Second Chance that did not manage to make it into an official file."

"I'll do what I can." There were a few in Seattle who he knew to have a bit of a lazy streak and would fudge things on reports. "I'll make the trip tomorrow." That way he could also speak to the few vampires Seattle had on their force as well.

"Technically, I'm on medical leave so I can wander as I see fit." It was only a formality put into place by the police union. "Would it be too much of a hassle to come back on Sunday? By then I'll have something for you."

"No, of course not." A beat paired with a worried, fretful look. "But you must be careful Mr. Kawada. I don't know which of the rumors about Second Chance are true, but even if only a third of them are factual you will be potentially taking a great risk. Ask no questions that might attract undue attention to yourself."

Shinji nodded, taking Henry's words to heart. "Don't worry, I'll tread lightly. I'll leave if I find that I'm stepping on too many toes." He would in fact step rather lightly, and be very careful.

"I'll see if I can take someone I trust with me. If not I'll go alone."

He gave a small, tense nod. 'Ceased his pacing long enough to offer Shinji his hand. "Thank you."

"Forgive me if I'm overstepping my bounds, Mr. Doyle." Shook the offered hand, studied the vampire in front of him. "But when I return, I think I'm going to get you that drink I promised. We'll talk, about things that aren't work related. You seem...tense." An understatement, and understandable considering what he had brought Shinji. "You don't have to bear this alone."

"At this point the fewer people involved, the safer the community." He didn't resume pacing, although he seemed unnaturally rigid and tense. "Second Chance is, I believe, a malevolent force. I have grave concerns about their intentions, as well as the intentions of current governments. And I am not happy, Mr. Kawada, that this situation reached this point without my hearing about it. It is....worrying."
