Who: Shinji Kawada, Henry Doyle
When: Night.
Where: Henry Doyle's council office.
What: Shinji has a couple of questions, and hopes that Henry can answer them.
Rating: Pg
Status: Closed and Complete.

Shinji had relished his day off. His lieutenant had given Shinji and Dee a full 24 hours of what he liked to call 'silent time'. The only time they would be contacted would be if there was an all call emergency. He had spent most of the day lazing around, cleaning, doing laundry and thinking about a particular elemental that he hadn't gotten out of his system.

The urge to possess someone so fully concerned him. He had fed regularly off of a few people, and even had a few on speed dial. He hadn't had any want to call them, instead his attention focused on Toshi. Convinced that he was going batty, he headed out after sunset.

People moved past him, the sidewalks crowded, most moving in packs of three or four. Shinji knew that wouldn't help much, but he wasn't one to create fear, and with the groups they had a slight chance of getting away rather than the individual. He stopped outside the council office building, pressed the buzzer to be let in.

"What do you want Kawada?" He recognized the disembodied voice, another dhampir who had failed the police exam, but had entered security instead.

"I'm here to see Doyle." Five minutes passed before the gate swung open, allowing Shinji into the building. It felt weird to walk the halls in civilian clothes, and at one point he debated turning back. By that time he was at Henry Doyle's office.

He knocked, two sharp taps, waited for permission to enter.

Security had informed Henry that Shinji had arrived seeking a meeting despite, the voice over the telephone had stressed this, not having an appointment. Henry had approved the officer’s visit regardless; there was nothing but paperwork for him today, all of which fell squarely into the category of ‘things that can keep.’ He spent the interim tidying his office, which was a somewhat unnecessary effort. Henry’s office was spotless, Spartan even. Neatly labeled folders were arranged in rows on the bookshelf and a bank of filing cabinets stood before the blacked out window, but nothing else. Other council members had photos of their families on display but Henry, having no family, had none. Nor did he have anything else more personal that his jacket, which was hooked over the back of his chair.

He had just finished filing his most recent file (Appendixes A-F for a proposed bill dealing with recycling policies) when he heard the double knock at his door. Shinji, obviously. He shut the filing cabinet with a metallic clang then crossed the room to open the door. ‘Smiled faintly.

“Mr. Kawada. Hello. Come in, please. To what do I owe the pleasure?”

Shinji smiled back, grateful that Henry had allowed him in. He had spotted Josen, the security guard, coming down the hall, probably intending to escort him out, if Henry hadn't answered.

"I was hoping I could take up a few minutes of your time. I have a problem, that's delicate." Without meaning to, he had taken in all the details of the office, the lack of personal touches, and the fact that it was impeccably clean, organized. He figured Henry would only have to hear the first two letters of a file before the vampire could produce it.

"Dealing with, I suppose the other half of my lineage."

Henry's brows lifted slightly, a tiny mark of surprise. If asked to name the Cove dhampirs with an interest in their vampire roots Shinji would never have made the list. Henry had assumed, in fact, that Shinji would have much preferred to have no vampire lineage at all.

"You are hoping to identify and locate your father, I assume?"

He didn't have to read Shinji's file to know his father's name was unlisted. Few dhampirs knew the names of their fathers. Even fewer were in contact with them.

"No." The response was swift and firm, without anger. "If I wanted to do that all I would have to do is go to Europe and find a Japanese vampire that looks exactly like me." His mother was currently in Europe, and Shinji assumed she was once again, trying to track down the man she couldn't let go of.

"It does have to do with the vampire culture." Shinji shifted, uncomfortable with the thoughts in his head, and hoping that Henry wouldn't judge him. "Neither side really had answers for me, and my mother did the best she could." Careful to keep any emotional intonation out of his voice when he mentioned her. "She raised me on synthetic." In his youth it had been expensive, something she brought up to him as he grew up. He realized later that it had been a ploy to get him to feed from him--a guilt trip essentially.

Once he was out of the house, he had found that didn't mind the pain of a dhampir bite, in fact they enjoyed it and allowed him to feed. "I take both synthetic and organic, but..." Here he paused, flustered, knowing it sounded absolutely insane. "Have you ever been focused on one person in particular Mr. Doyle?"

Henry considered the young dhampir a moment, silent and thoughtful. The question sounded rather less insane than Shinji might have expected. Vampire culture was anything but unified; the preferences and practices of hundreds of thousands of cultures, both mortal and immortal, all fell under the general heading of 'vampiric cultural practices.' It could be confusing to navigate; even vampires approaching ancient status were at times perplexed by what qualified as 'normal.'

"I assume you mean to inquire as to if I have limited my feeding to a single individual. Several times. I have also been subject to the same attentions myself. What is it you want to know?"

"Focused so much so that you don't want anything but that person in particular?" Shinji paced in the office, unable to sit still. "I haven't had cravings this intense before." He studied a blank wall, "I'm unsure as to what to do. What did you do?" He's a little twitchy.

"It scares me."

Henry watched him pace, lips compressed into a straight, pursed line.

"I fed from them and them alone. They knew what I was and that I fed from them only. It was a love relationship; I considered it to be something like fidelity. Forsaking all others et cetera, et cetera. It was the same when I was the blood source, although somewhat more one-sided on that case."

"Do you have feelings for this person? Or do you see them as prey? There's a difference between blood lust bound with sexual desire and blood lust born of the need to consume."

"There is an attraction. A very strong attraction." Shinji admitted. "It's not that I haven't had feelings for someone before. I just haven't wanted to possess someone." He turned to face Henry. "I haven't had a hunger like this. Is it because of the other half?"

"Vampires in LA kept to themselves, and even here there's a slight divide, but I thought you'd know something."

Henry leaned back against one of the filing cabinets, balancing the cold edge of the uppermost handle between his shoulder blades. His expression was thoughtful, a small furrowing of the brow indicating that he was taking the question quite seriously indeed.

"To an extent," he began. "Feeding is an intimate process for everyone. It exposes weakness and serves as a leveler. You're distracted when you eat. Your reactions are slowed by a millisecond or two. Eating acknowledges the limitations of the body; eating in public broadcasts those limitations. There's a reason most cultures feature the sharing of food in their mating rituals. It indicates trust. A willingness to be exposed."

"For vampires and dhampirs this is even more the case. We have to turn out backs to potential enemies, for one. We run the risk of losing ourselves to the moment if we're too new or have gone too long without consuming. We are trusting our food source to protect our very lives; that's rather more intimacy than the average first date over a plate of pasta."

"Even under ideal circumstances we're still exchanging fluids. There's intimacy in that in and of itself. You could consider it comparable to oral sex, if you wish. There's need there. Desire. Lust, albeit of a different stripe."

He folded his arms across his chest as he considered the dhampir. "So yes, it's because of your dhampir heritage. But it's equal measure the product of your human half as well. You know as well as I that there are a number of humans who seek the bite out for purely erotic reasons. The attraction exists on either side of the fence."

"There is an attraction between us." Shinji replied, speaking outloud more to himself, but not excluding Henry. "Even after I told him I couldn't make the bite feel pleasurable as a vampire's bite tends to be, I was allowed to feed."

He started pacing, stopped, and looked up at Henry. "I'm myself when I feed, I'm myself now even as I'm obsessing over this. As long as I don't lose myself I won't hurt him right?" The source of his concern, worry evident on his face.

"Never in my life have I wanted to protect someone and possess them just as fiercely as I protect them. If that makes sense."

Henry replied with a slow nod. He kept his own voice carefully modulated, a counterpoint to Shinji's more frenetic style at the moment. The dhampir needed the assurance of someone more objective than he was able to be at the moment. Later Henry would smile about the interaction. He had been in love and in lust before and he knew the peculiar swirl of emotions that were doubtlessly swirling through the younger man at the moment. Did he ever, he wondered, come to any of his elders in such high state of nervous excitement? Almost certainly, he suspected.

"It makes sense, yes. And, yes, your lover will be safe so long as you take care to not lose yourself. Keep your bites small; it's possible open a far larger wound than one intends in the heat of the moment. It will slow your feeding, but if you feel equally passionate about oneanother neither of you will mind the continued contact. I imagine you will, in fact, find plenty of ways to pass the extra time."

Henry turned away and opened the filing cabinet he stood in front of. His fingers tripped over each of the neatly tabled files, tapping each upraised tag at he passed it, until he found the file marked 'Anemia Resources.' He pulled out a glossy brochure and held it out.

"If you overfeed from your lover you will run the risk of sickening him. This provides information on what to do if that happens, as well as symptoms you can both watch for. There's also a guide for the recommended maximum amount of blood to be taken from a human over various heights, ages, and weights. You should discuss it together, as unromantic as that sounds. Hopefully he will see it as an effort to protect him and a sign that you care about his well being."

Shinji took the shiny pamphlet and tucked it into his back pocket. He didn't look forward to the potentially awkward conversation, but figured that if he was going to stay exclusive with the elemental- he might as well prove that he's there for Toshi's well being as well.

"I'm sorry." He blurted out, rubbed the back of his neck again. "I'm sure you think that this is all very...." He waved his hand around, "Childish? Preteen girl." Shinji was sure that Henry's opinion had changed of him. He wasn't acting like a cop, or an off duty cop, but a one of the girls in Toshi's class.

"I swear I'm an adult."

"I would not be having this conversation with you if you were not an adult," replied Henry mildly. "Children, even teenagers, should not enter into a singular feeding pattern such as you are suggesting. They lack the control and the requisite emotional maturity."

"You are in lust, Mr. Kawada, most likely in love as well. It's meant to be a heady experience. They are strong enough emotions as is for humans. But you are also of vampire stock; we feel these types of emotions rather more strongly than the average human. There are those who argue that vampiric control of mind misting is directly related to intense emotional response. It's hard to convince a mind of a sensation one has not felt themselves after all. You have inherited at least some of that, even if it is only the depth of emotional response." He paused, then smiled. "Congratulations, by the way."

"We'll go with lust at this point." Shinji said, "Not that I don't see it going further in the future, but lust and infatuation is a good way to describe what I'm feeling."

He fell silent, considering something, and when he spoke again, a bit of seriousness returned to his expression. "How many dhampir children have success tracking down their fathers?" The idea when Henry first mentioned it had been shot down quickly, but the thought of finding his father had festered in the short amount of time he had been in the office.

"Some." He shrugged apologetically at the lack of specifics. "It depends on the father. How hard they are to track down, if they're still alive, if they want to be found. Vampires live everywhere on the planet, including in places where humans would dare not tread. That's a lot of ground to cover and if a vampire is intentionally hiding or playing at being rustic and ignoring the modern would it can be time consuming to locate them. It remains possible, however."

"If your father has been slain, however, I would say your chances of discovering him, even his last known name, would be slim to none. Few vampires discuss their dhampir offspring. We can reproduce sexually for only a limited amount of time and only when we are very young; most vampires outlive their dhampir children by hundreds of years. Dhampir children tend to exist in the distant past for many vampires so their relevance is limited and, for some, quite a painful memory."

He frowned slightly as he continued. "If a vampire is intentionally hiding it can likewise be very difficult to locate them, particularly if they have been wise enough to move often and live in human-only areas. This was, of course, easier before. Cameras," he grimaced in distaste, "are our greatest predator these days; we can manipulate mortal minds to our heart's content, but we cannot confuse a camera."

"I was given a name, but it's highly unlikely it was his real name." Shinji jammed his hands into his pockets. "I once came across a vamp who started talking to me as though I was my father. Didn't use his name though. Which was frustrating. I was just curious you know? I don't really want to find him, I'd have nothing to say to him." A halfhearted shrug, "I don't mean that I blame him for leaving. My mom's a real piece of work."

He had thought about tracking down his father when he was younger, some far fetched plot to leave everything behind and live with the vampires, but he hadn't made any ground when he tried then, and even with the advancements of technology, Shinji knew his chances were slim to none.

"Just curious, that's all."

"I would not rely on the name you were given." Henry wished he could be more helpful than that. "Few of us maintain a single name throughout our life times. Most of change our identities entirely every ten or fifteen years. In the ancient past it was far more often; every three or five years. You would get further by combining a description with a location at a specific time. Your mother's name may get you far as well, given how little time has passed, relatively speaking."

He considered the damphir quietly, watching the turmoil within him occasionally crest only to be quickly tamped down. He was moved by the sight, although there was little he could do. There were no vampiric Cove residents that looked sufficiently like Shinji to be possible paternal candidates. He could inquire with his contacts in Europe but if Shinji's father was trying to hide, it was unlikely that he would choose to live in England where he would stand out, even amongst the vampire community.

"As I recall you left your mother's home at a young age, yes? It was, I assume, an unhappy situation?"

"Let's just put it this way Mr. Doyle," Shinji licked his lips, choosing his words very carefully. "I look exactly like my father. The vampire I met in fact didn't believe I was my father mascaraing as someone else until I told him what I was. Showed him things that are specific to dhampirs."

"My mother was young when she had me. Very young, very impressionable. An easy target for people who prey on others. She is still very much in love with him. It was difficult for her when I reached adolescence." Jaw twitched, "Very difficult for her."

Henry understood, or, rather, guessed. He nodded and said nothing, looking away slightly. He was unsure of how to comfort the dhampir; he wasn't sure offering comfort was even appropriate. He had heard of similar cases but had not come across them personally. There were few taboos in the vampire world, but incest was certainly one of them and it cut across virtually every branch of vampiric cultural identity.

"Would you like assistance in locating your father?" he asked eventually, his voice soft and low. He could do nothing to undo Shinji's past. He might, however, be able to better his future.

"It wasn't as bad as others." Shinji had heard stories, and even met a few who were worse off than he was. "I left before things could escalate."

He looked up, interested. "I wouldn't say no, but it's not like I've been looking very hard. I'm just curious as to who this man is. "

Shinji grinned, a bit of tension leaving his frame, appearing more relaxed. "That would be nice, I appreciate it. I'm not really looking for him if you know what I mean. Part of me just wants to know if he can be found."

He shook his head, grin still on his face. "It's not right, but I'm alright. I left before anything too physical happened. I almost feel sorry for her." He had come to terms with his relationship with his mother, and at this point felt pity for the woman.

"Spain." Shinji replied. "When I spoke to the vampire who knows him, he had approached me shocked that 'I' was in the States."

"The name he gave my mother, if it's useful at all, is Ichiro Kunimitsu." It wasn't a common name, but popular enough to prove irritating. "My mother's name is common, with it there won't be much reaction. It's Yukari."

He copied down the information as Shinji gave it. He had some contacts in Spain which gave him hope. Ichiro Kunimitsu would stand out among the Spanish vampires rather starkly. Someone was likely to remember him or know his current location. If he had already returned to Asia, however, tracking him would be more difficult. Maintaining relationships with the various Asian vampire communities had proven difficult. Two hundred years ago social and cultural differences had led some European vampires to claim they were somehow more authentic than their Asian cousins. The insult had not been well received and vampires were unfortunately known for possessing rather long memories.

"I will do my best Mr. Kawada. Anything I find I will pass on to you. Should you decide you would prefer to not locate your father let me know and I will cease looking on your behalf." A beat. "If you do change your mind please do not be afraid to tell me. It will not change my opinion of you."
