Who: Yuuta Hiroki, Sophie Finucan
When: Afternoon.
Where: Public library
What: While doing some research of his own, Yuuta is more than willing to talk.
Rating: Pg
Status: Open and ongoing.

Yuuta had been packing up the last few term papers, with the intention of taking an early afternoon and getting some time to himself, when his TA knocked on the office door. Evie walked in, and put one of the term papers that he had assigned her to grade on the desk.

"It sounds really familiar, and I can't place it." She looked worried, confused and a bit frustrated.

Yuuta thumbed through the paper, skimming, noticing striking similarities to a couple of C.S. Lewis' essays. "I'll take this one." He dismissed her with a nod, keeping the papers separate from the rest of the ones he needed to grade. The essay, in parts was nearly word for word one of the essays he hadn't assigned for this term, but one Yuuta was fond of assigning. He headed down to the university library, paper in hand.

The book of essays in question had been removed by a student, and no matter how much Yuuta bargained with the library attendant she wouldn't give him the name of the student who had checked it out.

Mood growing increasingly darker with each step, Yuuta headed down to the public library. He muttered, in undertone at a few of the books. The essays in the library were contained in three different books, and it took a few minutes to track them all down. He set his briefcase on one of the tables, essay in front of him, combing through the books to find the passages this particular student had lifted.

Sophie had been spending the better part of days in recent weeks essentially living at the library. After her meeting with Lyneth, of which she'd been very appreciative of, he feelings of needing to involve herself in this story and get every bit of information that she could get her hands on was reaffirmed. She spent hours pouring over books about history of the area, periodicals, mythology, anything that would help her better understand what she was getting involved in.

This day in particular Sophie dedicated to writing, although she wasn't entirely certain what it was. A journal entry? The beginnings of an article? A very verbose and convoluted grocery list? She wasn't certain. But she needed to start getting some of her thoughts and feelings down before she moved any further with research.

Surrounded by books and notebooks, Sophie sat at a table, typing quietly on her laptop so as not to disturb the other patrons (she'd been talked to before about her eager and loud typing). She glanced up from her work when she heard movement, seeing a man sitting at the table across from hers, a briefcase and a few books in his hands.

He disliked public libraries. The back area where they tucked away wobbly tables often smelled musty and of some unidentified food, and without fail there would be a screaming toddler in the children's section protesting the lack of video games. They were, however, necessary and he did appreciate that they promoted literacy to the public and encouraged those few teens who did read to do so.

The main problem Yuuta had with public libraries was that people were incredibly stuffy about the quiet that went along with the building. He had a bad habit that came out while studying, writing lectures, or grading papers. He muttered. In the safety of his office it was one thing, and the professor across the hall had gotten used to it. The university library was quiet-- not silent. Students would whisper to each other to assist with assignments, the quiet clacking of laptops and the occasional kindred spirit mutterer.

Yuuta felt eyes on him, and he looked up from the text, saw a young woman looking at him. "I'm sorry." Not a whisper but the quiet tone that was politically correct in a library setting. He recognized the titles of the books that he could see on her table, piecing together what she might be working on. Opening his briefcase, he pulled out a slim paperback book, his own copy of a book that was often missing from the Cove shelves.

He got up from the table, copy of Exodus: Supernaturals to Sanctuaries and approached the young woman. The book, ridiculously titled in his opinion was written by a colleague, and provided excellent history into the set up of various sanctuaries and those who resided there. "They only have one copy of this, and that copy is rather...abused." He cleared his throat, extending the book to her. "It might help a bit with your paper." He figured she was a student working on a project.

Sophie looked a little shocked when he apologized. What on earth was he apologizing for? "Oh, no. I wasn't - geez, I'm sorry. Didn't mean for my look to come across as accusatory," she said with an embarrassed chuckle.

When he got up from his table and walked over to her, Sophie gave him a curious glance, and her eyes went wide as he presented her with a book - a book that she'd been searching for for weeks! Lamentably, it was always out. Why there was only one copy of such a popular book, she didn't understand. Her eyes practically lit up like it was Christmas and she reached out tentatively to take it, not quite believing that she was holding it.

"Oh, wow. I've been waiting for this to come back for weeks! Thank you!" she declared, practically giddy. Somewhere in the distance, she heard a rather aggressive shh! and recoiled a little. "They're really adverse to noise here I'm finding," she said out loud, although more to herself than the man standing in front of her.

"I understand that most people find muttering to be a sign of insanity." Humor was in his words, the smile fleeting.

"You're welcome to it." Yuuta nodded at her, "Don't mind my notes in the margins, though you're welcome to those as well." He glanced toward the over active shh-er and simply watched the middle age man, who eventually got up and hurried off as fast as he could.

"You may keep it if you like." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I have a few copies. An acquaintance of mine wrote it, and sent me a few copies just because I offered a few pieces." He pointed to one particularly thick text next to her arm. "Don't bother with that one. It's a bunch of bullshit, and actual usable text and information is hidden beneath layers of violet prose." It was a text he assigned when he was feeling particularly malicious, or the class wasn't doing their readings.

"Normalcy is overrated," Sophie countered as she flipped through the pages of the book, casting a quick glance and a smile up at him.

She fought back a chuckle as the man who had shushed them pretty well scampered off, bringing her hand up to her mouth to stifle what would have been loud giggles had she allowed them to tumble out.

"I can't thank you enough for this," she said, still in awe of the book in her hands. "Honestly. It will be so, so helpful."

Looking at the book he was pointing to, she reached out and brushed her fingertips across the cover. "It did seem to be more filler than I desired, but really, I was just grabbing things off the shelves that looked like they might have an iota of useful information."

Sophie paused for a moment, reading some of the notes in the margins that he had made, and furrowing her brow. "Wait ... you mentioned you offered some information for this?" she asked, gesturing to the book in her hands.

"I did," He had turned to go back to his table, turning his attention back to the young woman. "I've been here since the beginning, Norris called me often asking about the set up of the Cove and which species were here. How many of my own kind were here."

"Another book that might be helpful is Friend or Foe, debunking supernatural myths within society., by PJ Kite. It's a bit of a snore, but has a lot of information. You won't be able to get it here, it's cheap at the university bookstore." A pause, considering her, "What's your paper on?"

He thought that she was a student. And quite frankly, it wouldn't have been the first time that someone had thought that. The amount of time she spent at the library, it certainly wasn't out of the question that she would have all of this material for scholastic conquests.

"Oh, I'm not a student," she said, almost bashfully. "I'm actually a journalist. I'm working on a piece about the Cove." She raised her eyebrow a little. "What are you, exactly? If you don't mind me asking, that is."

"I'm sorry." Apologizing for a second time, he grinned a little bit. "Do you work with a paper or a magazine?"

"Unseelie fey." Without hesitation, or apparent want to keep it secret. He had no issues with people knowing what he was. It kept the idiots away.

"Oh, please! Don't worry about it," Sophie assured him with a dismissive wave of her hand. "I've been mistaken for a student so many times since I've practically taken up residence here."

She shifted in her seat a little, twirling a pencil between her fingers. "Neither at the moment. I'm doing freelance work. I'm certainly open to working for a publication or a daily, but right now freelance seems to be working for me."

Blinking a little when he mentioned what he was, Sophie reached for a nearby book, not taking her eyes off of him as she flipped the pages. "I'm sorry," she said, looking apologetic. "I'm not sure I've met one of your kind before. In fact, I don't know much about fey."

"That book isn't going to give you a lot of answers either." He replied, not unkindly. "If you have met one of us, you're unlikely to remember it unless we wanted you to." They couldn't roll people as vampires could, but most had enough practice with glamour to shift their own appearance enough so that they were completely unmemorable.

"Do you want answers?" He watched her, amused. "I'll give you some if you'd like."

Sophie blinked at him and blushed a little, almost embarrassed at eagerness. "Oh. Well, yes. I'd love to know more about you. And your kind."

Immensely intrigued by what he had said about the unseelie fey, she greatly desired to know more. While she prided herself in knowing much about the various species that resided in the Cove, she was well aware that she'd hadn't yet had interactions with them all, nor was she fully aware of the scope of their powers and abilities.

She rose from her chair, smiling at him. "I'm Sophie."

An extra push of glamour as he took her hand, and shook it. She wouldn't feel the scars, he didn't often exert the energy to cover them completely, but most didn't offer to touch him. "Yuuta." A small smile, or what passed for a smile.

"I'll answer your questions." He wouldn't lead her too far astray, he was charmed by her pursuit of knowledge, and the fact that she kept going back to the books. He had also spent too much time amongst the humans, and had no interest in the courts anymore "Please, sit." He sat opposite her when she sat back down.

"Where would you like to begin?"

Sophie sat back down and grabbed a notebook in pen, favouring the writing utensils as opposed to her laptop when interviewing people. It was just something that she'd picked up in college and never really thought necessary to change.

"Well, Yuuta," she began, looking at him keenly, "I was wondering if you could offer me a bit more background on your species. I'll plead ignorance - I'm not entirely familiar with fey."

A slow grin crossed his face. "Be lucky that I already made up my mind to be forthcoming then." He cleared his throat, grin fading. "Fey can be divided into two groups. The Seelie, and the Unseelie. As a rule of thumb, very few fey are generous with any type of information. No matter which group they come from. We, as in the unseelie, have a track records of being pains."

He got as comfortable in the chair as he could be. "I won't ask anything in return from you, and what I tell you will be the truth." Yuuta shrugged, looking past her to a young teenager who was clearly using the library's wi-fi to download porn.

"The Seelie court is light. I spent some time there, none of which I enjoyed, so I don't really care how they function." It may have sounded brutal but it was the truth. The time he had spent at the seelie court was painful, both emotionally and physically. "My court, or group however you wish to look at it, is the dark court. Where the seelie is bathed in light, we came out of the darkness."

Sophie was writing furiously as he talked, truly hanging onto his every word. She knew of vampires, wereanimals, and some of the other species that she had encountered during her life, and had heard of the fey, but had never had the opportunity to truly talk to one.

"Darkness?" she asked, lifting her head a little. "So, your kind don't like light? And the courts, what are they like? I'm picturing castles and whatnot in my mid. Is it anything like that?"

"We came from the darkness, they came into existence of the light. I'm comfortable with it, others are not. The same with the seelie. I haven't been the courts in a very long time, so I've...adjusted to the outside world." He paused, considering her question. "There are courts all over. The court I am a member of is in the fairy mounds overseas."

"I'm sure some of the more pretentious dark courts have castles. I wouldn't be surprised if a few light courts have them." A slight grin, "We're not extras in a Disney movie. Most of us are nasty little bastards."

"This is all so - wow," Sophie said, laughing a little to herself, in awe of what she was hearing.

She scribbled a few more notes, and attempted to hide the look of embarassment on her face. "I - I'm sorry. I didn't mean any offense, it's just, well, that's what I pictured when I think of courts. Clearly not the case!

"Was there anything that made you leave the courts? You certainly don't have to answer that if you don't want to," Sophie explained. "It's just that with the way you've described it, it kind of seems like it's not something that you would just up and depart from."

Yuuta's jaw twitched, and he shook his head. "People leave for many different reasons. Some willingly, others are exiled." Beat, "I'm not going to explain why I left."

"You haven't offended me Sophie, it's difficult to do so." A small smile. "Everything that I say to you is the truth. I -we can't lie."

"Oh. Okay, that's fine!" Sophie said, looking a little embarrassed. No matter how many years she'd been doing interviews and getting information like this, she still always felt a little badly when a particular question struck a nerve - and clearly that one had. But, she did make a note of the fact that fey were occasionally exiled from the courts.

"You can't lie?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. "Is that common with your kind?"

"We can bend the truth, and avoid a complete answer, but to lie to someone's face isn't possible." Yuuta actually grinned, amused at how she seemed interested. "It's not that the words don't come out or anything-- we simply can't. Think of it as a genetic trait if that makes it easier to understand." He wasn't insulting her, there wasn't much of a reason as to why they couldn't lie.

"There are theories however, that it's because we deal with illusions and reality. Both courts. It's easier to bend the truth in the dark courts, but you still cannot outright lie. Which makes things difficult."

"Your kind must not do well in professions such as attorneys or used car salesmen," Sophie joked lightly, still jotting down notes.

"Can other things be bent in the courts besides truth?" she asked, her eyes slightly wide. "Are you able to - oh, I don't know - conjure things? Maybe make things appear to be something that they are not?"
