Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Rub a Dub Dub
Who: James Brighton, Dopy and OTA on the ship
When: Mid Day
Where: Lady Luck and outer decks of the Nausicaä

He kept staring at Mike’s boots.  It was a silly thing to be fixated on in all this, he knew, but the boots were there and Mike wasn’t.  Who was the luckier bloke than?

It had been three days since Mike went overboard in the storm.  The fucking mast snapped like a toothpick and a rope recoil knocked his best friend to his doom.  James couldn’t swim.  Why had he never learned?  It hadn’t seemed terribly important before.

Four days ago the world had been just fine.  After arranging for a fill in at his practice, James had flown to Florida for a much needed vacation with his best friend, whom had retired there.  James had been all for deep sea fishing on Mike’s sailing yacht, out for two days, back by next evening.  They even took the shaggy pony, Dopy, Mike had claimed was a dog with them.  The ‘Lady Luck’ was her name, and the irony wasn’t lost in retrospect.  They were four hours out when the engine died.  Mike hadn’t found anything wrong with it.  The compass was swinging wildly as well.  As they set up the sails to head them back the way they had come they’d both joked about the Bermuda Triangle.  Then the damn storm hit at midnight.

Dopey, the world’s most cowardly wolfhound, had hidden below decks in the head.   When the mast snapped and James was hanging on for dear life he hadn’t initially been aware of Mike being sent overboard.  Once he was, tossing the life preservers meant little, Mike was already beyond sight in the huge swelling waves.  With the broken mast dragging the already precarious ship, James had gone about cutting all the lines, untying what he could.  He didn’t want to be drug under.

In the morning he found that the yacht was taking on water.  A slow seep had produced two inches of water in the lowest points.  The salon and bedroom was a trashed mess from the storm, and Dopy had to be rescued from the head as a mattress blocked the door.

Now there was three feet of water below decks, and James had moved all the food and water he could to the covered helm.  The canned and dry goods, anyway.  Including the dog food.  He didn’t consider why he risked his own faster demise sharing water with a giant dog.  Maybe because some company in misery was better than none.

They were going down by inches.  Unless they came across rescue they’d last maybe another day, maybe two.

James tore his eyes away from Mike’s boots and regarded his furry companion.  Dopy looked back at him, panting in the heat.

“The good news is, we won’t have to see which of us will have to eat the other first.  We’ll drown before than.” He reached over and scratched the dog’s scruff before reaching for a cigarette.  The four remaining cylinders of tobacco were strained and dried out after being soaked in the storm.  They tasted like shite, but they were better than nothing.  Soon even they’d be gone.

But considering he was already hallucinating the sun jumping all around, he needed what little sanity the nicotine could offer.

Dr. James Brighton hurt all over.  His bruises were fading, but his skin was dried out and little stinging cracks were appearing.  He wasted precious fresh water to sluice some of the salt off his skin the first morning after the storm.  But it hadn’t been a real shower, and while he stayed under the shelter of the open air helm’s roof, the sun and ocean breeze was slowly taking their toll.  Dopy’s fur looked a right mess, and the pads of his feet were starting to crack as well.  He’d lived in his bright orange life jacket since the storm, and managed to wrestle Dopy into his specialized canine version.  They were a sorry sight indeed.

“Now you, my friend, are the epitome of a salty dog.” James chuckled to himself.

Dopy seemed to bark in response and James waved the dog down.  “You’ll just need to drink more if we talk.”

The dog ignored him and stood, barking over the rail, tail wagging rapidly.

“What? You see a dolphin, then?” James turned his head to look, his mismatched eyes taking in the view.  On the horizon was a ship.  A huge fucking ship.  A cruise ship, no doubt, but he’d never seen one like it.

It was too far out to see the yacht.  But James couldn’t bring himself to give up.  It seemed to be heading towards them.  He went to the emergency box and set up a flare.

Abbie had been wrestling with the concept of the axe for days. Allie wanted her to give it back. Today, Abbie had finally caved. After all, why not? They'd moved downstairs, only to Momma Ship move them back. What was the point in hoarding an axe against that kind of thing? She packed the axe in her backpack (well padded by blankets), and headed towards the security office.

Really, she did. But she and Esper got distracted. It was rainy, but pretty out, and Abbie wanted some fresh air before her parents grounded her for life. Could you get grounded on a ship? She wasn't sure. The pair headed to the outer decks for a walk, and Abbie was admiring the ironic rainbow when she saw sparks. She looked out over the horizon, and at first, didn't see anything. When her eyes finally caught the object in the distance, she couldn't help but think of the internet macro.

When you see it, you'll shit bricks.

"Oh my God." Abbie flailed, not really sure what to do. "Um! Um! Uh oh!" She turned and flew to the nearest indoor hall and started screaming. "BOAT! BOAT! UM! THING! MAN OVERBOARD!" Well, not technically, but that was bound to get people's attention - right?

Jean was taking Nikko out for a much needed walk in the rain when he heard the girl shrieking. He hurried into where she was yelling and stopped next to her. Nikko immediately sniffed out her canine companion, fairly unaffected by the ruckus.

"Easy there," he said, trying to calm her. "What's wrong?"

Abbie struggled with words a minute before simply grabbing the man's arm, pulling him out on the deck, and pointing madly. It was then that she realized the ship was - and had always been - turning slowly and steadily in the other boat's direction. And the smaller boat was sinking. "We need...!" Holy hell, what did they need? "Life rafts! Rope! MacGuiver!" She'd settle for two out of three.

Oh bloody hell, there was a yacht out there and it was sinking. Jean gripped the railing, looking down the long drop to the ocean and then back around him.

"Go find help!" he told the girl. "I'm going to try and find one of those innertube things to toss down to them." It was a start.

Abbie ran to the hall she'd found that guy in - presumably That Guy had a name but it wasn't really important right now, and tore ass through Cyamite's and down the hall. When she saw a person, she shouted. "HEY! We need help out on deck! There's a boat sinking!"

That person happened to be Erik. He got up so fast, his chair turned over. He rushed to the girl. "Show me," he commanded. He started off in the direction in which she had come, jogging so she could keep pace with his long strides.

Jean had managed to locate one of said innertube floats and was heading towards the edge again. He saw the gent jogging towards him with the girl. "Neither of you know how to work the lifeboats do you?" he asked. The lifeboat drill seemed an eternity ago, and he hadn't a clue.

"We need to get to them quick." Which was obvious, but what was he supposed to say?

Pyrrhus really hadn't planned on any excitement today. He'd stayed in his room, so he hadn't been moved like everyone else, although he did notice the new little message that seemed to be everywhere, including in the tile work of the pool he'd spent a good portion of the day near. Not swimming, of course, but preparing. He'd had to smile, though. From what he'd overheard from people, whatever chaos force was running the show these days had messed with people's heads good. He'd have to check on Phoenix and Juhi later, make sure they were okay.

It wasn't until he heard the shouting that he felt the need to get involved, however. Following the sounds of the voices, he found himself at the edge of the boat and saw the sinking ship. Guess the universe decided we needed new playmates. Arriving just as the jogger and the teenager did, he looked the situation over. "What do you need me to do?" he asked. He was glad he'd left off the makeup today. That would probably just add to the freakout.

Emily was just walking into Cyamites when she saw a girl running out the door on the other side. Less than a minute later, the same girl came running through again in the other direction, this time accompanied by a man who was jogging alongside her. Both of them seemed excited about something. Something's up; I better make sure there's no trouble, she thought worriedly. She headed in the direction the two of them had been running, and found them on the outer deck, along with Jean and Nikko. They were alternately examining the lifeboats and looking out to sea ahead of the ship. Emily looked in that direction, and that's when she saw something completely unexpected: a sinking boat. Oh my; so that's what the excitement was all about.

Emily took the walkie-talkie from her belt and hit the talk button. "Attention all security volunteers; this is Emily. A sinking boat has been spotted, and the Nausicaä is heading right for it. I'm on the outer deck on the port side of Deck D, just outside of Cyamites. Anybody who's available, we could use your help as soon as possible. Over."

Oh bloody fucking hell. If it wasn't one thing, it was another on this bloody cruise ship to hell.

First Mae and Alexander were just gone. Then one of his security gets beaten half to death by a some loony bird who already attacked another person and escapes. And another murder and now they were about to run over a yacht or somewhat.

Cath really, really hated this ship.

"On my bloody way," he snapped into the walkie-talkie. He didn't bother to identify himself. As if they didn't know who it was. "For now, tell them not to do anything." Hopefully, Ronnie knew how to use the lifeboats proper, since the basic drills the rest of them had been given wouldn't be of much use.

Ronnie also heard, pausing and picking up his radio and taking a deep breath. "I'll be by the lifeboats. If it's sinking somebody needs to go look and find out if there's anybody aboard," he said. "Ronnie out."

Then he turned and hurried out, towards the lifeboats, praying that he could remember how to use the boats properly. And that whoever went out in said boats would return safely.

The excitement was starting to draw more people, as was to be expected. Emily stepped up to address the small crowd. "Hey everyone, I want you all to know that the security folks have been made aware of the boat. Several of them are on their way to help, including one of the ship's original security guards, who has been trained in the proper use of the lifeboats. Until they arrive, please don't take any actions that might put yourselves or anyone else in danger."

"Yes, ma'am," he agreed quickly.

All right, that made sense. Jean sighed and raked his hand through his hair, peering across the water at the sinking yacht. He couldn't help but think this could be a good sign. It wasn't as if they had seen any other craft, or dolphins or anything else on the water before now.

He held onto Nikko's collar to keep the dog still. With this many upset people, he was bound get antsy and they didn't need him blundering into people this close to the railing.

"We still have security?" Pyrrhus asked no one in particular as he half-listened, half-watched the dog straining against its owner. He'd seen this woman around a few times at the ship-wide meetings. She was a nice enough lady, he supposed, but not really the type who should be in charge. Ignoring her, he climbed up onto the railing and began examining the lifeboats. He'd spent enough time among them, he figured he could probably figure out how they'd worked pretty quickly.

Emily's heart went into her throat when she saw the man climb the railing. Please don't let him fall, she prayed silently. Why was it that someone always had to push the limits?

"Please be careful, sir. We wouldn't want you to get hurt. If you want to be involved in the rescue, wouldn't it be best to wait until the security guard arrives? He'll probably need to operate the winch from here, so we're likely to need some volunteers to row the lifeboat over to that yacht. You could volunteer for that. I might volunteer for that myself. Won't you come down until then?"

Phoenix was drawn to the commotion like Pyrrhus had been. Well, perhaps not in the same way. She loved chaos, loved to watch it swarm. She didn't particularly want to help, just watch but she figured she'd end up helping somehow anyway. She arrived just in time to hear Emily pleading with Pyrrhus to... do what? Get down? Wait? Yeah right.

She brushed past the other woman and climbed up on the railing on the opposite side of the lifeboats Pyrrhus was checking out, doing the same before actually looking out in the water to see why they were needed. She felt like a pirate - Hell, she kind of looked like a pirate at the moment.

"Well damn. Dingy of the port bow," she grinned at Pyrrhus, "Figure 'em yet, Cap'n Crunch?"

Pyrrhus turned and smiled as he heard Phoenix's voice. Good, that was one down. Maybe Juhi will show up at some point. "'Ello, poppet," he said with a wink. "It 'pears there be a shipwreck o'er yonder," he said, affecting his best pirate brogue. "Methinks they be in needs of rescuin', only yon wench insists we wait for the king's men." He pointed to the woman who had wanted him to get down. Yeah, that was going to happen. He returned to his normal voice. "Thought I'd at least try to get started, save 'em a bit of work. Wanna help?"

Ronnie arrived quickly, wearing his uniform and wincing. Great. Rubberneckers. That's exactly what they needed now. Looking over at the young man who was up on the boat already he blinked.

"Hey, buddy, you want to get the boat ready, make sure the cables on the bow and stern before you hit anything. Make sure the connections are tight so the boat doesn't fall on the way down," he said. It was always easier to put the people to work, rather than trying to convince them to stay out of the way. "And thanks."

Then he turned, looking at Emily and blinking before he looked out at the boat. "When was it first spotted?"

Oh great, now there were two of them. Oh well, she'd warned them to be careful; they weren't really breaking any rules or endangering others, so she decided to let them be. Besides, there wasn't really anything she could do about it anyway, without resorting to force, and that certainly wasn't called for. Best just to let them have their fun and wait for Ronnie and/or Cath.

Emily didn't have to wait long; Ronnie arrived and got the rescue started. Responding to his question, she said, "Just a few minutes, I think. I wasn't the first to spot it; I think it was either that girl there" - she pointed to Abbie - "or Jean and Nikko. So Ronnie, how many people do you think we should send in the lifeboat? I'll volunteer to be one of them; I can keep in touch with the ship via the walkie-talkie."

Jean didn't argue, immediately climbing into the lifeboat to help the strange guy and his girlfriend check the ropes. Finally, someone who knew what they were doing.

"The girl found them," he told Ronnie as he tested the stern line. He knew a little about boating from fishing excursions. "Couldn't have been more than five minutes ago."

And of course, Nikko had followed him into the boat. Bloody beast. "Out," he ordered. While the daft creature was big and strong, he wasn't a trained rescue dog and would likely be in the way. He looked at the girl as he half pushed, half dropped the dog from the boat. "Can you mind Nikko?" he asked her.

He was going. They'd need surefooted, strong people. As long as there wasn't any blood, he'd be fine.

Oh good, Ronnie was already there. He'd stopped to grab a couple of pair binoculars from the security office. Ronnie and few people. Small bloody blessings. He stopped next to Ronnie and Fuck, the bloody thing was sinking fast.

And he couldn't do a bloody thing about this. He couldn't swim, so going out on a water rescue was right out. If he fell over, they'd be rescuing him. Not worth the risk.

This was Ronnie's show. Handing the lad the other pair of binoculars, he looked out again. "I think I can see one person, but my vision's shite through these."

He looked over at Emily. "You'll have to spot for them," he told her. "I can't see." Well, this was lovely, he was just useless. It wasn't doing much for his mood, that was for certain.

Ronnie looked up, grateful to see Cath there before he looked back at Emily. "I think it would probably be better if you were the on-ship connection? I'd rather take a couple strong men so that there will be more power but also more room for survivors and whatnot," he said, then turned to Cath.

"Probably better for you to stay here, too, you know. Big boss staying in case something goes wrong out there," he looked at him, seeking approval for his plan or suggestion of another, ready to jump into action as soon as they knew what was going on.

Emily was a little disappointed; she had been hoping to go on the lifeboat. She turned to Ronnie and said, "Of course, I'll stay on the ship if you think that's best. I'll point out, though, that I'm pretty strong, despite being a woman, and I would take up less space on the lifeboat. And I'm more expendable than you. But it's your call. Just tell me what you want me to do."

If there was one thing that annoyed Cath, it was having his orders, no matter how they were presented, utterly ignored. He'd told Emily she needed to spot for the rescuers because it was her or the near hysterical Abbie. And while he was beginning to wonder if a frazzled little girl would be better at it than Emily, that wasn't the point.

"I can't swim," he told Ronnie. "So I'm not going. I'll just be a liability." He turned his attention back to Emily. "And they'll need a spotter on the ship, who can see both positions. I can't used these because I can't see a bloody thing closer than arm's length away without my glasses. Which I've forgotten. That leaves you or the girl. Now stop arguing with us and do your bloody job before the boat goes under completely."

His attention back to Ronnie. "Anything else you need before you lot are off?" he asked.

"All the king's horses and all the king's men fell off the boat and drowned again," she muttered mostly to herself as she examined the rigging. She listened and watched as a set of people flooded the lifeboat. Plus a dog. Bad dog. Needed to stay on the big ship or else they'd all sink from his fat happy tail wagging butt. Hee.

"Cables on the bow and stern..." She looked at Pyrrhus, "You take the high road and I'll take the low road and I'll be in Scotland a'fore you." Phoenix went to the stern of the lifeboat and started checking the cable riggings there. She knew cables. She'd worked in hard labor situations. Her bright eyes flitted to Ronnie when he said something about 'strong men' and she laughed. "You stay here then, kid. We'll see you later," no one was getting Phoenix off the lifeboat and away from adventure. Sorry.

Poor Irish dude... Getting so ignored. She too ignored him, more interested in going going going, "Everyone shut the Hell up and move or I swear to the stars I'll cut off all your hair in your sleep."

Pyrrhus smiled. It was almost like old times, playing pirate with Phoenix. "Aye, me lassie, I'll be takin' the bow and see if there be any friggin' in the riggin'" He checked the cables and it seemed that everything was all right.

"All right, so we set then? Myself- I'm Pyrrhus, for those just tuning in,- Phoenix, and you two?" He pointed to Ronnie and Jean. He knew there was no way in hell Phoenix was going to miss out on this, so he didn't even mention her getting off the boat. Besides, if it was a guy out there, he'd probably be very happy to have a woman on his welcoming committee.

"All right, ye land lubbers, all aboard! There be a poor soul in Mortal Peril! Avast and ahoy!" He knew this was a serious situation, of course. But this was how he dealt with serious situations. And anyone who couldn't deal with that? Might be going for a swim.

Jean stepped aside so the red haired girl could check the cables. She looked like she knew what she was doing. As for arguing about it, well, they didn't really have time.

He pointed to the flare that had just gone off. "Come on," he said. "There's somebody on there alive and the bloody bow's nearly underwater. We haven't time to row about who's going and who's not."

"Right," Ronnie nodded breathlessly, giving one last look at Cath before putting his hand on Emily's shoulder. "We really appreciate you keeping an eye out on this end," he said, looking directly into her eyes to convey the seriousness of his thanks before he turned and got into the boat. "Alright, even on both sides," he said, waiting for them to get in and secure before starting to lower the boat. "Oh. And Cath. If we take a really long time, just... let Terra Martin know for me, ok?"

He looked down. Maybe it was selfish or stupid to be yelling things like that, but the one thing he didn't want happening was for him to die or go missing and Terra to be left alone, wondering where he was. Clearing his throat he looked down below to the water, then at the volunteers. "This'll be a quick jump aboard, grab whoever's there, get back to the ship. If you see any useful supplies in the water feel free to grab them if it's convenient, but this isn't a salvage. We also need two people to stay with the boat no matter what. "Godspeed," he said to all of them. He just nodded at Ronnie's request, his expression going more grim. The knot in his stomach tightened further, as he thought about Mae. Christ on the Cross, he couldn't lose his head now.

Emily was finally cooperating and Abbie seemed calm enough, and he needed to get away and compose himself a moment. He'd use the excuse of raiding the on deck supplies for blankets and such. Being useful as he could.

Which meant calling Leto. Grabbing the service phone, he dialed the infirmary, waiting for her to pick up. Hopefully, she or Jerome were there.

"It's a good thing this thing can hold a ton of people... At this rate we're going to end up taking half the ship," Phoenix rolled her eyes and smirked at Pyrrhus.

"Heave-ho, bitches!" Once everyone was settled, she began the very careful, steady lowering on her side and hoped to the above that she and Pyrrhus could work together long enough to make sure the lifeboat didn't tip over and cause them issues. There was no reason for this to turn into a competition.

And all the while she was humming a tune from the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie... At least until she said, "I'm going on the grab of people. Nice comforting female presence or some shit. I dunno, I have tits. Maybe whoever's on there will be happy to see 'em." And that was how Phoenix kept the situation light. And only further proved how much she and Pyrrhus thought alike.

Pyrrhus hummed along with Phoenix as they lowered the boat. Nice and easy, no rushes. "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me," he sang as the boat lowered. He kept pace with Phoenix pretty well, not getting ahead or behind. Last thing they needed was everyone getting tumped out into the sea.

Once the boat was in the water, he took his seat. "Full speed ahead, Mr. Christian!" he shouted to whoever was in charge of the engine. So someone's life was in danger. It didn't change the fact that this was fun.

Ronnie tried to keep a straight face, though it wasn't easy. He was leaving the relative safety of the giant ship with a crew of escaped mental patients, it seemed. This should be fun.

"If everyone could take their seats," he rubbed his forehead, ignoring the comment about the female anatomy. Once everybody settled he lowered the motor engine into the water and bit his lip, yanking the chain and then sighing happily as the motor roared to life.

"Alright, here we go," he said, settling at the helm and then making sure everybody was ready before steering the boat out and away from the main ship, getting to a safe distance before heading for the yacht as fast as mechanically possible. Another flare meant there was somebody out there, all they could hope was that they weren't too late.

Eric laughed at Phoenix's antics. He helped lower the boat in the water and also sighed with relief when the motor cranked up. At this point, he was little more than hired muscle, so to speak. He looked worriedly out to the other boat that seemed impossibly far away.

Jean blushed as red as Phoenix's hair when she spoke of her breasts and people being happy to see them.

He was as well hired muscle and equally glad as Eric when the engine started. Thank God for small miracles.

On the other hand, he was rather concerned that the liner was going to ram the yacht before they reached it. Or while they were trying to rescue the people on it.

"I'll stay or go, whichever's needed," he said. "I can drive an outboard motor and I've done some search and rescue, although only little lost children on land."

Phoenix took a seat at the head of the lifeboat, acting as a look out. She could do that quite well you know - shout 'look out'. She'd done it so often before especially when Pyrrhus was showing off. Glancing over her shoulder momentarily she took stock of reactions. One guy was blushing. Eric was laughing and she managed to say to him, "Oh hello. I forgot you were about!" Pyrrhus and Ronnie were nice and normal. Good for them. Okay, Nothing about Py was normal but that was entirely beside the point.

"Oi, Queequeg," she reached out to flick Pyrrhus's nose, "Shush or I'll throw you overboard. You're going to scare people." Phoenix really was trying not to laugh at that because she knew she'd scare people too. Oh well. Which is when she started singing "The Good Ship Lollipop" very loudly in hopes of getting the attention of the people or person they were rescuing.

The ship certainly was getting bigger. Headed right for them. If the flair hadn't worked...

"Oh shut yourself up, will you?" James chided the big beast. "They can't possibly hear you."

Just to be sure James loaded the second flair. There were four all together, and he couldn't afford to waste them. But seeing the likelihood of being run over in the middle of the bleeding ocean with nothing else about for miles... fuck but his luck was shit.

He moved out from under the canopy once more and shot off a second flare. Dopy followed him and jumped up to put his huge legs over James' shoulders, knocking him back under the weight.

"Get off me, YOU at least can doggy paddle. I can only bob like a buoy."
