Attacking the Darkness
Who: Cath, Leto, Open to security
Where: Homer's Study
When: Mid-morning

Cath wasn't drinking. He hadn't gotten to that point yet. He wanted to take his knife to the walls of the ship for the note. And for taking Leto's brother and Mae. Saints, he couldn't think about that. Not and keep his head. It was hard enough to drink coffee without thinking about it. Tea wouldn't be any better. He couldn't stand to be in their room, because she was all over it. Sleep was out of the question.

If she were gone-

No, he'd deal with that after this was dealt with. She could still be hiding. But then, Alexander wasn't the type to hide, his sister said.

Fuck, he was living his worst nightmare. He tried to order his thoughts properly. No breaking down, no going mad. Keep it together until this task was finished. Then, he could do what he needed to when he was alone.

There was really no chance in hell that Leto was letting her son anywhere out of her sight today. The past few days, she'd been okay with leaving him with her dad. Today, she didn't really want to let her dad out of her sight either. Levon had gone to the infirmary with her, and was firmly in her arms as she entered the library, her father at her side. Levon seemed mostly oblivious to the world around him, earbuds from Leto's Ipod in his little ears.

Leto was running on auto-pilot. She'd woken up, discovered her brother to be missing, utterly flailed for two seconds, and snapped into auto-pilot. She wasn't really thinking about any of it yet, not now anyway. Work first, deal later. That would do.

She didn't bother putting Levon down or setting him up with books like she had in the past. She just nodded to Cath and waited.

Though Jerome came from a 'stiff upper lip' sort of background, he did worry that he might be showing his age today. He was relying on his cane again, and more than he had since being miraculously healed by the ship -- or, perhaps, 'Mother'. He reported to the infirmary, and he wordlessly walked his daughter to the meeting and stood by her side. Whatever thoughts he had on the situation were kept tightly under wraps in the confines of his mind. He would cross the bridge of loss when he came to it, and he wasn't there yet.

Res hadn't slept the previous night, and showed it a bit, but she was used to pulling all-nighters. When she saw Cath's notice on the computer she simply hauled Keane's ass out of bed, and the two headed upstairs.

This was how Res realized things were getting even weirder. The halls and stairwells had notes on the wall. Never forget me, for I gave you life. Yeah, okay. That shit was fucked up. Especially considering the context. The captain had quoted it to them all on their first night on the crazy death ship. Great. Fabulous. Epic fail.

"Morning," she greeted in the library, leaning against a shelf and leaving room for Keane at her side. She could have made some joke about wingus and dingus reporting for duty, but considering there were people in the room with family missing, she managed to keep her big mouth shut.

Molly had been in hysterics this morning. Sean wasn't too far behind, but her freaking out actually helped hold him together. The notes, the fact that they were back in their rooms...

Now this.

Sean had gotten Leto's threatening note yesterday. They were definitely dealing with a nut job. Paranoid schizophrenia, the biggest likely hood. The handwriting struck him as masculine, but he was by no means an expert. He handed these kind of things over. Only now there was no one to send them to.

So with the escape of the psycho bitch they now had two dangerous and deranged individuals running around, a force that could move people like chess pieces and more people missing. It was a beautiful day in the fucking neighborhood.

Sean was running on strong coffee and heart burn at the moment. How the hell was he supposed to protect these people?

He walked into the library and slumped into a chair. This was Cath's show. Sean had to wince. No matter how bad it was he still had his Molly. Cath was missing Mae, and Leto and Jerome were missing Alexander. He didn't know how anyone with missing family was holding it together.

Kevin stumbled into the room just slightly after Sean, a rumpled t-shirt and running pants on and sneakers still untied, a cup of coffee in his hand. "Mornin'" he nodded, still half asleep. "So, anyone else get a wake-up note from their mum this morning? Bit odd really, seeing as me mum rung up the curtain about 10 years ago." He threw the note down on the table, then plopped into a chair, his coffee splashing slightly as he set the cup down and rubbed his temples with his fingers. Hell of a morning, and it wasn't even breakfast yet.

Ronnie had woken up... in his own room. Alone. A freaky note on his nightstand and an even scarier message on his mirror. His mirror.

Which was not ok.

After throwing on his jeans and a white undershirt he'd left everything else behind except his utility belt and gun, bolting out of the room to check on Terra. Finding her safe he'd done the next logical thing and checked on his messages. Kissing her and wishing her safe only took about five minutes and then he was off, arriving in Homer's study with his hair stuck in ever direction, clutching the note in one hand and thoroughly hoping that the mirror thing was just his imagination.

He stopped, seeing everybody gathered, then cleared his throat and suddenly realized how ridiculous he must look, bare footed, sleepy eyed, and not at all like he should be in charge or indeed a part of anything that involved security.

"So... um... there's... there were notes all over my room. And... Mae?" he looked to Cath, extremely worried for his friend before he glanced at Sean, who didn't seem to be doing well, either. Nobody in here did.

Keeping it together was one way of putting it. More like keeping himself occupied so he didn't run mad. This wasn't the time for that. He sipped his coffee, making a face at it before putting it down. Saints, he was rubbish at making coffee. Which just made the void already there bigger.

Saints, he couldn't think about it. But it would keep coming up.

He spared Leto and Jerome a nod, and his expression softened as he saw Levon. If anyone understood what he was going through it was them. They were missing family as well. And the boy, of everyone, he deserved to be trapped in this hell less than anyone else. And now he'd lost his uncle as well.

Fuck, he hated this bloody ship.

Res and Keane were next, and honestly, he would have welcome any humour right now, dark or otherwise. The tension was just growing as the room filled. People who expected him to have a plan. Which he did, Cath always had a plan. Several of them, in fact. But they weren't going to be privy to all of them. Just the ones that mattered to them.

Sean came alone, looking like he'd forgotten sleep again in his quest to protect all of them. Cath couldn't reprimand him today, he'd not slept either. Couldn't sleep, not in their room, with the pillows and bedsheets smelling like Mae. He was going mad enough without tormenting himself on purpose.

He nodded to Kevin's comment. "Aye," he agreed. His note had been torn to shreds in a fit of anger. "Mine's been gone for 14 years. Bless her soul." He crossed himself. "Apparently, it's the bloody ship." Probably possessed by some sick demon. It figured. At least they had still had a priest. Thank God.

Ronnie's entrance caught his attention. "We've all gotten them," he told him. His calm, grim facade broke for a heartbeat as he looked down and shook his head. "Still no sign of her."

He clenched his jaw tightly, forcing himself to calm as much as he could. "We need to organize search parties," he said, dragging himself to the idea at hand. "One to search for Mae and Alexander, the other to track down the crazy shrew that escaped. She's dangerous, she can't be left to rampage. She's already badly hurt two people."

Cath wanted to search for Mae. He should be searching for Mae. But he knew when it came down to it, he should be helping find the crazy bitch randomly mauling people. Outside of the few experienced military men they had, he was one of the most experienced fighters on the ship. Especially guerrilla warfare.

"Sean, I want you to head up the search for her. This is your area, not mine." He took a deep breath. "I'm with you if you'll have me." He turned his attention to the others. "Res, Ronnie, divide up everyone else and start searching the ship. Recruit more people if you need it."

Peter chose that unfortunate moment to walk into the room. His cane clicked against the floor in forewarning a moment before he opened the library door. Immediately, he looked around the room with an expression of obvious surprise; he hadn't expected to find everybody and their brother present.

But, it was, perhaps, for the better they were all here. He recognized the various members of the security team -- they had become rather well-known faces, after all -- and he cast his eyes about the room until he found Cath.

"I'm sorry to interrupt," Peter murmured. He felt old and tired. For a man of his years, it had been a long walk from the body to the library, especially because he had been trying to hurry. "May I have a word, Cath? I'm afraid it can't wait."

It certainly might have been simpler to address the entire party...but there was a child present, as well as Leto's father. Peter was beginning to think of them more and more like civilians. And civilians were always on a need to know basis.

Emily entered the room close on Father Peter's heels. As soon as she had realized that everyone had been moved back to their original rooms, she first checked on her father, and then ran up two flights of steps to check on Megan. She had been concerned that Megan might hurt herself if she woke up in one room but thought she was in the other. Fortunately, Megan had been OK, so Emily had returned to her room, showered, and dressed. And then she'd seen the messages on the journal system about the new round of disappearances and the prisoner's escape. This was not turning out to be a good day.

Cath pretty much thought of them all as civilians except for Leto and the designated security folks. Jerome was another exception to a point. Father Peter was in a class all of his own, being one of the vital members of this motley crew they couldn't afford to lose.

He nodded to Emily and then Noah as they each entered. Noah's sympathy was well meaning, but painful. He didn't want bloody sympathy, he wanted his wife back. Which wasn't rational, but anyone expecting him to be utterly rational would be a bit much.

"Of course, Father," he said, stepping towards the library office. "Excuse us." That was for the room in general. They had their orders, they didn't need him hovering over them.

He let the priest into his office and shut the door. He had reordered it quite a bit before the ship had began resetting everything, but now it was as neat as it was before everything had been shaken up. Cath settled against his desk, folding his arms over his chest. He was hoping, silently praying, this was about Mae, even if she'd sent the priest to tell him she never wanted to see him again. He just wanted her alive and safe.

"How can I help you?" he asked him wearily.

Peter could see Cath was upset; that much was obvious. And it was Peter's solemn duty to upset him further. He was sorry for that, but, at present, he had a job to do.

The priest felt that Cath would not appreciate a long preamble. So, instead, he simply took a breath and said, as gently as he could, "The body of a young woman was found this morning by one of the staff members."

Alright, so that hadn't been gently put, but...there simply was no other way to say it.

All right, not only was that not good news, that was possibly the worst news today. "It's not-?" he asked, not being able to even finish the question.

If that bastard had managed to kill his Mae, Cath was going to tear this ship apart until he found him and rip him limb from limb with his bare hands. He clenched up, forcing himself to be calm. "Sorry," he said. "I'm a bit off today. Do you know who she was?"

He needed to be logical. Or as logical as possible. If it were his wife, Peter would have come out and told him.

"I believe she was a shopkeeper," Peter said, although, to be honest, he wasn't one hundred percent certain of that much. "The young man who found her was not very helpful." To say the very least.

Peter frowned at Cath a moment then stepped forward, cane clunking on the floor, then lightly against the desk as Peter took a seat across from Cath. "I don't think anyone would mind if you took a moment to collect your thoughts."

Or himself, for that matter. He looked a mess.

Peter didn't know her. That meant it wasn't Mae. Thank God. There was still hope, as fragile as it was. People who disappeared on this ship had never turned up alive. But he had to try, if just to make himself hold on a bit longer to do what he could for these people before he went mad from grief.

Cath shook his head, laughing bitterly. "If I take a moment to think, Father, it'll just make it worse," he told him. "Thinking about it will make it real. I can't deal with the reality right now. There's too much that needs doing."

If he took a minute for himself, it'd be his last. And it wasn't time for that yet.

Peter nodded thoughtfully, but he understood. "Alright, then," he agreed, "But you know where to find me if you need me."

Rising back to his feet, Peter said, "I can take you to where the body is. I believe a Spanish dictionary or someone who could translate the language would be helpful. The young man doesn't seem to speak any English at all."

It was back to business then -- bodies, search parties, the whole nine yards.

"Thanks, Father," he told him sincerely. "I might take you up on that later. For now, pray for us. All of us." Not like he hadn't been expecting that the man had.

"I'll ask about, someone is bound to speak it," he agreed. "We need to get Sean and Leto anyway. Perhaps one of them does."

If it wasn't one bloody thing, it was another on his ship from hell. "Did you get a note as well?" he asked. He was fairly bloody certain Peter's mother was long resting in peace. "Why do I feel like this bloody ship needs a proper exorcism?"

"I did," Peter affirmed, exhaling a breath. "Until this 'Mother' claims responsibility for the disappearances, murders, or our own situation here, I would prefer to hope that she is on our side. I don't know how you feel about your own mother, but I loved mine very dearly."

Yes, in the middle of the craziness, Peter was hoping for the best. It was all he could do to resist going insane himself.

Cath chuckled bitterly. "Avenging her murder was the reason I joined the PIRA in the first place," he admitted quietly. "Which makes me all the more cross that the ship presumes to take her place."

He heaved out a sigh. "Here's hoping the ship is trying to protect us," he admitted. "It's easy to assume it's the one doing all the harm. I never thought of it the other way around." It made sense though, with all the healing and returning their things and replenishing the food.

"Thanks, Father," he told him. "Perhaps you ought to make that idea known. This lot needs any hope they can get. Even if they disregard it, it's something for the rest to cling to." Not everyone had faith and truth be told, faith wasn't always enough.

Cath crossed himself at the blessing. If Father Peter knew his thoughts, he doubted he would be so kind. The priest was far too good at making him see reason. He didn't want to see reason right now. He wanted his Mae or to join her in Hell. There was no other options.

"Just take us to the girl's body," he said wearily. "Please."

He raked his fingers through his short, bleached hair, which probably didn't do anything for it's appearance. "Shall we?" he suggested, nodding towards the door.

Peter nodded solemnly. "Of course." He paused, one hand on the knob. "And remember the dictionary, please."

Dictionary, translator, it all came down to the same thing: this was going to be awfully difficult to sort out if they couldn't communicate with the young man.

Twisting the doorknob, he opened the door and stepped to the side to wait for Cath.

Sean had slept. It was the waking up that was the problem. The idea that everyone had been moved in their sleep without knowing was terrifying. So were the implications of the notes.

"I'd have you." Sean was honest. He wasn't happy with anything that had happened lately, but Cath knew what he was doing. "However, logistically shouldn't you be on the team looking for Mae.? You have insight into where she might go and how she'd react that no one else has. I know you've been looking but something else might spark an idea."

However, it was Cath's call. He was security chief.

When Noah woke up in his own room, he was extremely puzzled. He, for one, loved the calm and tranquility of his room. However, the fact that he went to sleep in one room and woke up in another was unnerving. The note? Didn't help matters.

He did what any other logical person would do. He had a good freak out for about a minute 30 seconds while the computer started up and then he checked the intranet. Good, so it wasn't just him. Then he read that Alexander and Mae were missing. Shit

He hurriedly put on a pair of jeans and black t-shirt. He rushed to the library in time to hear that Cath was organizing search parties.

He cleared his throat. "I'd like to help in any way possible." He shot sympathetic looks to Cath, Leto and her father. "I'm so sorry."

Cath emerged from his office just in front of the priest. If anything, he looked more grim than before. He waited until they were all quiet before he spoke up.

"There's been another murder," he explained. "One of the shopkeepers. Father Peter says the man who found the body only speaks Spanish." His gaze settled on Sean. "This is more your area than mine," he admitted. Then over to Leto, still holding her little boy. "And yours."

Saints, could this get any worse? "I'll come along if you both want. If not, the father can take you to the girl's body and the person who found her."

Another body. Sean closed his eyes for a moment. He hadn't caught the killer before he struck again. Or was it the woman? If she beat the crap out of Maddie, then she was strong enough, and unbalanced.

"I'll need someone who speak Spanish then. I know how to order from a Taco Bell menu and everything they taught on Sesame Street, hardly enough for a conversation."

He shook his head at Leto. She didn't want to be separated from her child, and that was right to be her priority. "It's up to you, Ms. Wood. We don't need the boy seeing anything he shouldn't, so if you don't want to hand him off, it's okay. I can take Watson." Sean pointed to poor Kevin. He'd already seen some of the worst.

Kevin looked up, then chuckled a little as he put his palm to his face. "Sure, why not. I've only been moved in the middle of the night without being woken. Hardly had my fill of weird for the day yet." He stood up and straightened his t-shirt, more a force of habit than anything. "I should warn you, my Spanish is crap as well. If he does French, though, we might be on to something. I can at least muddle my way through that." Kevin pondered for a moment how a crisis can change a person. 2 weeks ago if someone had mentioned a dead body, he would've likely run the other way. Now here he was essentially volunteering to look at one.

Leto felt rather overwhelmed with her emotions right now, and it showed on her face. No, she didn't particularly want to go. On top of everything else, she was angry. Who with was yet to be determined - though 'Mother' was certainly at the top of that list.

She wasn't a doctor, she hadn't taken any damn oath, and as a nurse, she couldn't really help a dead body. But after kissing Levon's head, she handed him to her father. "I speak Spanish," she said, voice low and even, before setting her eyes on Kevin in a nasty glare. "And if you make another joke in my presence right now, this entire ship is on its own - are we understood? If you don't want to be here, leave. I don't care how strung out you are, or how 'weird' things have been for you, my son is in danger, my brother is missing, and if being moved around in the night was all the rest of us had to worry about, I think we'd all be pretty damned happy. Man up, for God's sake." She clenched her jaw and turned to Sean. "Let's get this over with."

Sean gave Kevin a sympathetic look behind Leto's back. Everyone dealt with stress and being on the edge differently. Dark humor was long the meathod for most in law enforcement and a good number of medical professionals. It was a pressure valve that kept people from just breaking down in the face of it all.

But Leto obviously was beyond dealing with that. Her situation was as bad as Cath's, worse, as she was threatened personally, she had a child to fear for as well as a missing brother. There had to be fear for her father as well.

As Leto headed out the door Sean pointed to his eyes, then Kevin before tapping a non-existent watch on his wrist. 'see you later' was pretty obvious.

Sean followed Leto and father Peter, not fool enough to judge her own emotions in the least. Not after how tightly he was strung after having to leave a terrified and lost Molly to join the security detail.

"Could you tell if the victim was cut or beaten? Any obvious signs of assault?" Sean knew he'd find out soon enough, but it was better than walking in silence.

Cath's hands clenched up tightly as Kevin joked and whinged about the whole situation. He understood on a rational level it was just a coping mechanism, but his rational mind wasn't exactly winning any battles with his emotional state right now. So he ended up wanting to punch the English cook instead.

Luckily for Kevin, Leto lashed out at him verbally before he could lose control and give into his need for cathartic violence. It was a dead girl involved. That dead girl could have very well been his wife, which was making him even more sensitive about the subject.

Besides, if it were his Mae laying on the floor, he'd not want half the bloody ship gawking at her body. It was just bloody disrespectful. He turned his attention to the rest as they left.

"I'll start the search for the batshit bird myself," he amended his plan. "This one's by volunteer only. The rest of you, start looking for Alexander and Mae."

Peter glanced at Cath, giving him a gentle pat on the shoulder as he followed Sean out the door. He understood how the man felt to some degree, although he himself had never lost a wife. But he had lost men and he had lost his God, and the Not Knowing was worse than Knowing that they had died.

But it wasn't the same as a wife, and he knew it.

So, the pat was all he had to offer.

Outside the office, Peter assumed the lead. Despite being tired -- physically and emotionally -- he kept a fairly steady pace for his age. That steady pace, however, was probably regular walking speed for his entourage and maybe a little slower.

When Sean finally asked his question, Peter glanced at him with a shake of his head. "Nothing I saw...but I didn't touch her." There might have been a head injury or something on her back -- but, given the state of the storeroom, he was sure he would have seen any blood right away on the smooth, cool ground.

Kevin nodded to Sean as he and Leto headed out. Probably best if he stuck behind. While he'd meant no offense with his comments, he could tell that he'd touched some raw nerves with Leto and Cath. He'd probably have to apologise later, which ate at him a little. "Right then," he said, looking to Noah. "Guess since we're supposed to be on morning watch anyways, we should give the ship the once-over, see if we can't turn up something." Although he could sympathise with Cath's state, he thought that he'd much rather it be Alexander he found than Mae. Last thing an English fellow like himself needed was to come crosswise with an Irish bird in a right state. Besides, if worse came to worse, he'd rather have patched things up with the medical staff than the bloody librarian.
