Who: Alex and Open
Where: Bexley
When: Friday Night

Vampire hunters amused Alex in all the wrong ways. The boy that Percy had brought home was still sleeping on the couch, which was amazing in general, but Alex was particularly impressed with the guts Brody had in staying with two vampires. Not that Percy was really there that much. He lingered close to Dawn, but usually behind closed doors, and in his own world.

But Alex spent his time investigating Brody, because he had the time...and he could.

Except tonight the vampire had decided to explore, to see if he could find these so called 'Bexley Hunters' that he'd over heard a pair of demons discussing at the Black Drum. If nothing else, Alex was aware that the hunters could certainly provide him with the needed entertainment to make his days somehow less boring. Much less boring.

"How much is that doggy in the widow," he sang to himself as he walked along the empty road, looking about. "The one with the waggily tail, how much is that doggy in the window...." He never could remember anything beyond that. It was a stupid song, but then again a group of hunters claiming to be a fictional movie character that killed vampires with ridiculous flair was equally lacking in intelligence. "Oh where, oh where has my little dog gone, oh where, oh where can he be...."

Alex isn't the only one doing a little exploring tonight. Julian has also heard of the hunters and has set out in search of them. Of course, if Leo were here, he'd cuff Julian for even thinking such a thing, but he's not here, is he? Julian is lonely and bored, a combination that, mixed with his longstanding hatred of vampire hunters, makes for a very dangerous brew.

It amuses him, too, the thought of hunting the hunters. As if clumsy humans were any match for his kind. Stealthy? Hardly. And quiet? They're completely incapable of it. The very cracking of their bones as they move can be heard clearly by one attuned to such things, and their whispered mutterings to one another might as well be shouts for all the good they do. Perhaps it's anger that compels Julian as much as boredom and impulsiveness. He hates them because they kill his kind, and for the arrogance that leads them to think they should decide who should live and who should die. And, though he will never admit it, he hates them for being human, and because he will never be again.

He catches up to one of them in a small grove of trees at the edge of the park. She's alone, which is foolish. But perhaps he is even more foolish not to wonder why. A twig snaps under his boot and she turns, her hand automatically going to the blade at her side, but she's not fast enough. Julian is on her, fangs wicked and glistening in the moonlight as he yanks her head back. He intends to bite through her throat, silencing any screams so he can drink his fill, but she's strong, and jerks her head aside at the last moment. A shrill scream briefly pierces the night air, cut short as Julian finds his target and his fangs sink in deep.

But the damage is already done. There are shouts and the sound of running, heavy boots crashing through the underbrush. They must have been waiting nearby, using the girl as bait. Julian curses, fangs bloody as he fists his hand in her hair and yanks her head back for the coup de grace. Her eyes are wide, staring up at Julian with horror. She tries to speak but nothing comes out save a horrible gurgling sound. Julian bites down, tearing at her jugular. A moment later, there's a heavy thud as her body hits the ground, her blood steaming in the night air as it gushes over the carpet of dry leaves.

The group of hunters crashes into the grove of trees. "She's dead!" one of them shouts, kneeling beside the body. There's a deafening bellow of rage and they take off after Julian, who is already running, his boots sliding on the wet grass as he navigates a steep hill. He curses again as he runs. Merde! He wants to stay and fight, not run like a coward, but there are too many of them. A glance over his shoulder proves they're gaining on him. His boots pound the earth as he runs, trees passing by in a blur. He sees the road ahead and puts on speed, running towards it as fast as he can, the pack of hunters close on his heels.

Alex had almost given up hope when the shouting broke the cool silence of the night. It wasn't that Bexley was a large place (it was rather small actually) and it wasn't that there was anything in the way or night life either, that caught him off guard. It was that out of a small park near homes burst first the vampire he had met in passing some days ago...and then people.

Angry people with swords that glinted in the night's light and made the pale vampire go a little paler still.

For a moment he wished Percy was there, strong and resolute, and powerful. Percy was great on the powerful, having led a careful life in that no one had ever walked away alive that once raised a weapon against him. His sire, in a word, was ruthless.

Alex, in a word, was a chicken.

Yelling out in surprise and a bit of fright, the boy vampire turned on heel and started to run. He didn't care that his hat was left on the cool, damp pavement.

He just cared about living.

Julian recognizes Alex right away. He wonders what the boy is doing here all alone, but the thought is quickly banished. He has more pressing matters to deal with right now, such as not being hacked into bits by a crazed mob of vampire-hunters.

He skids down the hill and dashes across the road, nearly crashing into Alex in his haste to get away.

"RUN!" Julian shouts, but Alex is already turning, running as fast as he can across the road.

Running was not something Alex needed to be prompted to. He was well on his way to hot footing it out of the way of the hunters, glancing back once to see the other vampire following.

"Dannazione tutti, perché mi hai seguito?!" He called back, trying to run a little faster. His short legs, though, could only take him so far. And it was never far enough it seemed.

"Wh-what?" Julian squeaks. "I don't speak Italian!" He steals a glance over his shoulder, panic setting in as he sees the screeching horde closing the distance. Looking ahead again, he sees Alex running, but not fast enough. The boy's fists are pumping, his face a mask of grim determination, but his child's body simply can't keep up. Julian's legs aren't that much longer, truth be told, but he grabs Alex's hand and grips it tightly, towing the boy behind him as he makes for a group of nearby houses.

"Come on!"

The small neighborhood is dark, most of the residents of the semi-detached houses fast asleep in their beds. The houses are uniform, not much to distinguish one from the other, each with its own small back garden, a brick wall at the rear separating it from the alley.

Julian comes pounding down the alley, nearly dragging Alex over the rough bricks behind him. He stands there for just a moment, looking this way and that. He can hear the shouts of the hunters growing louder, their footsteps thundering as they round the corner. Quickly, Julian darts into the nearest house's back garden, hauling Alex along behind him.

All of the houses have a small garden shed in the rear corner of the garden, and this one is no exception. The shed is somewhat dilapidated, but it'll do. Julian urges Alex toward it, getting him in front and pushing him along.

"Quickly...in here!"

Inside it's pitch dark and damp. The air is musty and heavy with the smell of rotting wood and ancient petrol. Julian feels his way past the disused lawn mower and garden rakes, crawling into the very rear corner. There he takes refuge under an old workbench, its legs rough hewn and crooked. He flattens himself against the wall, panting, his eyes wide. He clutches Alex tightly, tensing at the sound of the hunters' voices just on the other side of the wall.

Alex groaned as he scrambled into the dirty, muddy shed. He didn't like where he was, feeling cramped and wedged into a small space as he shuddered a little. The hunter's spoke loudly, trying to decide where to look, hunting the ground in search of footprints as the wind kicked up. A light patter of rain started, with a rumbling thunder.

Time seemed to stop, before feet turned away and ran in direction aware from the shed.

Tense, the blond vampire waited a few moments before he shifted and tried to turn away to face the other vampire, pale lamplight slipping through tiny cracks but giving little illumination.

"What did you do?" He snapped in a hushed, irate voice.

Julian listens intently, one hand bunched in the fabric of Alex's shirt. When the sound of the mob's footsteps finally die away, he sags with relief. He doesn't have long to reflect on their escape, however, as his tiny companion rounds on him, eyes flashing in the dim light, demanding to know what he did to bring the wrath of the hunters down on them both.

"I...I killed one of them," Julian admits shamefacedly. He pauses, giving Alex a pleading look. "She was going to kill me first!"

Alex growled, twitching as he stared at the boy across from him. She was going to kill him? Those idiots of a hunter?

"I doubt that highly! You kill her? You couldn't do it when there were not so many around!? Now they will try to kill me." Alex scoffed, before growing silent again as the sounds of foot steps started again, growing closer.

"I didn't know!" Julian pleads. "It was a trap, Alex. The others were hiding nearby and..." He clutches Alex's arm tightly. "I'm sorry. Don't be afraid. Your Sire will protect you, I am sure of it." He swallows hard, terror spiking deep in his belly at the thought of the dark one. He will protect his childe, of that Julian has no doubt, but what will he do to Julian for dragging Alex into this mess? He shivers miserably, huddled there in the damp. There's a pang in his heart as he thinks of his own Sire. He clings to Alex, feeling lonelier than ever.

He doesn't have long to reflect on the situation, though, as there is suddenly a commotion in the alleyway behind them. The sound of boots on cobblestones grows louder, as does the murmur of angry voices. The hunters have returned, as determined as ever to find their prey.

Julian's eyes are huge in the near-dark.

"Shh," he whispers, fingers digging into Alex's arm. "They're back."

Julian's whole excuse made Alex sick. What made it worse was the way the vampire clung to him, whispering that the hunters were standing there. As if he didn't know! Ug.

But he stayed silent. He kept his mouth shut, and he closed his eyes. If Percy was there, they wouldn't be hiding. Percy, in all his tiny glory, would have killed them with barely a thought to it. Then he would have turned away and walked home. Nothing would have affected him.

And as much as he loathed the though, Alex wished with everything he had, that Percy was there to save him.

Alex's face swims in front of Julian, pale and small in the gloom. The boy is sitting, his eyes closed, his mouth a thin tight line. He looks as if he expects to be executed at any moment. So, too, does Julian. He looks around the musty shed, trembling a little as the voices grow louder outside.

He doesn't want to die in this place.

The door to the shed is a flimsy affair, held shut with a worn wooden latch. It wouldn't take much to kick it in. Julian clings even more tightly to Alex, not even realizing he's doing it, just needing something, someone to remind him he's not alone. He swallows, eyes wide in the darkness, trying to marshal what little courage he has left. The doorway is narrow, to be sure. Too narrow for more than one man to enter at once. He and Alex could take the first two, maybe more if they're lucky, but sooner or later...

Outside the voices grow louder and more distinct. Julian can pick up snippets of conversation now.

"...fucking lost them..."

"...look like..."

"...tell the others..."

More voices join in, some hostile. The hunters seem to be arguing amongst themselves about whether to abandon the search or keep looking. They shout back and forth for a long time, unaware that only a thin sheet of plywood separates them from their quarry. Finally, after much arguing, footsteps begin to lead away, back down the alley to the park. The voices subside to a grumble, then fade away altogether.

Julian looks at Alex in astonishment. He can scarcely believe their luck.

"I think they've given up," he whispers. He glances around nervously. "We'd better stay here a while longer, though. It could be a trick."

"I noticed," Alex remarked moodily, before reaching out to thwack Julian hard on the head. "You really shouldn't have killed that girl without looking for others first! How old are you?"

Physically, Julian seemed much older than Alex, but with vampires such things could be a lie.

But he waited, listening as he bit a lip and tried to peek through slates in the wall. "I don't think they are coming back," the little Italian Vampire said, "we were lucky they are not smarter."

Real lucky.

"Ai!" Julian reaches up to rub his sore head. "One hundred and seventy-seven." He pouts. "And I didn't have a chance to go scouting around for her friends. I was too busy trying to keep her from killing me."

He leans forward, peering over Alex's shoulder as the smaller vampire checks to see if the coast is clear.

"Yes," Julian agrees quickly. "Very lucky." He hesitates and puts a hand on Alex's arm. "I am sorry, Alex. Please do not be angry with me. Did you never make a mistake when you were young?"

"You are certainly odd enough to know better." Alex snorted, rolling his eyes a little as he settled on the ground to look at Julian. "And no, I didn't ever make a mistake like that. My Sire taught me to be aware of my surroundings before I attempted to kill anything. He would have had my skin for something like that." Which might have been literal, at best.

Still he waited a moment, before turning to crawl out of the little shed, looking around carefully a moment before standing and tilting his head to the side to listen.

Julian sits back, scowling at Alex resentfully. He's suddenly, almost uncontrollably jealous. Easy for him to be so smug when he had a Sire to teach him and mold him from the moment he was turned. So easy to be superior when you've been taught what to do from the very beginning!

"Well, I didn't," Julian snaps. "I had no one to teach me. My Sire turned me and then abandoned me. I had to learn to hunt on my own. I had to learn everything on my own. I didn't have someone to take me by the hand and show me what to do like you did."

He folds his arms, sulking. It's one thing no one can tell him he's bad at doing. But curiosity gets the better of him, and he crawls out behind Alex. The little vampire is standing there, his head tilted, listening. Julian does the same, copying his movements, alert for any sound of danger nearby.

Scoffing a little, Alex only rolled his eyes at Julian's whining. What did he care if the boy had, had a sire or not to teach him things? Some of it Alex thought was fairly common sense.

But when nothing alerted him to danger, he relaxed a little and sighed. This was not how he had expected his night to go. Not at all.

As relieved as Julian is that the danger has passed, he's secretly disappointed, too. He wishes he and Alex could have stayed hidden a little longer. It was nice not to be alone for a while, even if the other boy was angry at him.

He fidgets a little, looking at Alex hesitantly. He supposes Alex will go now, back to his Sire, and leave him alone again.

"I am sorry," he offers again, feebly. "I did not mean for it to happen."

"Sorry doesn't change anything, you know this right?" Alex looked back at him, squaring his shoulders before sighing a little. "Look, sire or no sire...You should know how to think. Common sense isn't taught to anyone." He shook his head, blond hair falling into his face as he looked away. This was the hard part of being immortal, fighting the urge to be stupid.

"Next time, just look around before you tear a head off. Won't do you no good to have to police after you either."

"Oui," Julian murmurs, ashamed. He stands, hands clasped behind his back, thoroughly chastened by the tiny vampire. "I will be more careful in future, I promise." He sighs, chewing his lip for a moment. "I was so hungry," he adds plaintively. "And she smelled so good."

He hesitates a moment, then steps toward Alex, wanting to somehow bridge the gap between them.

"I would not have let them take you. I would have offered myself instead. Please believe me, Alex."
