The History of Zach and Adrienne: Take 18½
Who: Zach and Adrienne
When: Thursday, March 15, 2007. 6:00 PM.
Where: Sunroom in the West Wing at the school.
What: Awww, their first ‘official’ date.

Exploring the other day had yielded a perfect spot for Zach’s first official date with Adrienne. His choice location was a sunroom near the top of a tower located in the West Wing. Regardless of the current weather and the glass barrier of windows that formed most of the walls and all of the ceiling, the room felt heated and warm. Perfect for an evening date. Zach sent his card to Adrienne after classes were over, so she would have received it by now. Gathering together everything he needed in hopes for making a single journey, Zach arrived at the spot thirty minutes early and began to set up.

First, he laid out the blankets in the middle of the circular room. In case either one of them wanted anything softer to lean upon or sit on, two cushions had been brought with him as well. The room was empty of any furniture, which led Zach to believe it hadn’t been used in a while. He set down the basket of food he had prepared. Nothing cooked, since he wasn’t much of a cooker, so it was full of lunch items instead of dinner ones.

Final touches included setting up various candles, which he had collected from students in his dormitory the day before because he didn’t have any candles himself, on the outer rim of the circular floor. Once they surrounded the room in a single-rowed pattern along the windowed walls, Zach glanced around the room to check out the layout. Scratching the back of his head, he hoped it looked good. That wasn’t too . . . romantic or cheesy, was it?

Instead of worrying further on that, though, Zach got to business with setting up the food, cups, plates, and everything else. Once it was nearly ten minutes until 6:00 pm, he went around lighting the candles. Dusk had fallen by now, leaving a darkened sky beyond the windows. No howling winds, so the air was peaceful. Due to the unknown source of heat, the room was also warm and comfortable. It was a perfect setting.

Zach plopped down onto the blankets with a sigh. He wanted this to go well — or, more accurately, to go off without a hitch. Zach and Adrienne only just became a real couple on Tuesday. Official boyfriend and girlfriend. Honestly, the idea was a little scary despite the exhilaration threatening to engulf him. Crossing his legs, he began to twiddle his thumbs together. Okay, so he was a little nervous.

Make that absolutely petrified.

Thank goodness Adrienne wasn’t petrified for if she was she probably wouldn’t have left her room for the date. It had nothing to do with no wanting to see Zach – there was nothing Adrienne would rather do! – she was just scared that she’d somehow make a fool of herself. Thinking logically would have told Adrienne that there was nothing to fear considering how many times she and Zach had hung out in the past, and how much they had done together when they were alone. Though this time around, their time together had a title to it - ”First date.” Who would have thought that two little words could make a girl’s heart race at a hundred-miles a minute?

They were official now. Zach was her boyfriend… hers. And she was his. The thought gave Adrienne a warm feeling throughout her body and soul, spreading happiness through every cell in her body. It was enough to overcome her nervousness over the idea of a first official date. Still, that didn’t mean that she was just going to go meet Zach dressed casually. No way! Adrienne wanted to impress him; dressing nicely for him meant that she cared enough about his opinion of her, more than anyone else’s opinion really, and that she just wanted to look nice for him. It couldn’t hurt things if he thought she looked pretty, right?

Adrienne had spent a good twenty minutes after her shower trying to choose what to wear that night. She finally settled on a simple crème-coloured strapless dress and a matching cashmere cardigan. The ensemble fit in the ‘semi-casual’ category - not quite fancy, but not a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, either. Adrienne pinned her hair in a messy up-do with a few strands curling down around her neck and face. A final look in the mirror was all Adrienne needed before she headed up to the tower in the west wing.

It was just a few minutes before six o’clock when Adrienne climbed the stairs to the top. She had never been in this tower before and she was excited to see what Zach had planned for the two of them. Adrienne knew she’d love anything that Zach put together, but when she reached the glass room at the top the girl was rendered absolutely speechless. She felt the blood coloring her cheeks as her eyes gazed about the sun room. It was beautiful with all of the candles lit around them, and the idea of a picnic was just… perfect.

Adrienne took a step toward Zach after the initial shock had settled, a broad happy smile drawn across her rosy lips. “Zach… this is…” she dropped to her knees next to him and threw her arms around his neck. “Oh this is wonderful!”

Petrified though he was of their date tonight, Zach knew it had nothing to do with seeing Adrienne. The connotations of ‘first date’ were enough to throw any boy off, and that included Zach. Nothing bad about it in Zach’s case, but things had still changed between him and Adrienne and he was aware of the transformation. Before they hung out and enjoyed each other’s company and kept things simple. They didn’t have any serious talks about feelings or where they stood with each other.

Tuesday let them talk about those things they hadn’t really touched upon before. It let them make amends for their miscommunication and opened their eyes to what was actually going on between them. Zach and Adrienne were interested in each other, and it was something they wanted to act on and take a step forward with together. Adrienne was his girlfriend now. She didn’t want to be with anyone but him. It brought a small smile to his face as he thought about it.

When it came to what to wear, Zach didn’t want to throw on jeans and t-shirt. Well, he had just thrown on jeans. Had to give credit where credit was due. For his top, though, chose a shirt his grandmother had made for him as one of his presents on his eighteenth birthday. It was a simple but nice white long-sleeved shirt with beads sown into the front. He wore a thin shirt underneath it to build on some layers of fabric.

Adrienne was right on time. In fact, she showed up just shortly after he had lit all of the candles around the room. He sat with crossed legs on the blankets when she emerged in a beautiful dress. His breath hitched briefly. How nervous was he, really? It wasn’t like they hadn’t done so much together before, but he acted like this was the very first time. After she had gazed around the room, Zach hadn’t expected her to drop to her knees and throw her arms around his neck. It caught him off guard that he almost fell over and had to hug her back to make sure he stayed upright.

They pulled apart, and he smiled at her. “You like it?” he asked. “It’s not a fancy restaurant or anything,” Zach added as his gaze roamed over everything. “With this weather, I figured staying in the school was best.” He turned his head back to Adrienne, fixing his eyes on her and smiling. Zach reached for the basket he had borrowed from the kitchen, lifting it slightly for a moment. “I made us a meal. It’s all fresh food because I can’t cook.” He laughed a little at that.

Adrienne could barely take her eyes off Zach. He looked so good in the outfit he was wearing, though honestly he could wear a potato sack and Adrienne would think he looked hot. It was all about the person Zach was; his personality... the way he behaved... everything! Everything about Zach made him attractive to Adrienne, not to mention the fact that he was absolutely good looking. That fact could stand apart from his other qualities even if Zach didn't realize it.

"Zach this is... perfect. It's better than any restaurant." The smile on her face showed nothing but sincerity in her statement. Adrienne couldn't think of a better way to spend her time with Zach, what he had arranged tonight in the tower was beyond anything she could have ever imagined. It was romantic and Adrienne never imagined herself as being the type of girl who went for romantic, but here she was loving it completely.

The feeling stirred something deep inside Adrienne, something that her wolf responded to quickly. It lapped it up hungrily and used it to ignite a fire within the girl. Adrienne's mind was suddenly filled with thoughts that involved them naked on the blankets with many candles at their disposal. Hot wax... naked flesh... Zach's tongue... She took a deep breath to calm herself as she recognized the wolf rising to the surface. There was no way she was going to let it ruin this night for her and Zach. She swallowed hard and bit her lower lip for a moment before she smiled.

"This is really amazing," she said as she pushed the beast down as it struggled to exert its power. Not tonight, it was not happening tonight. It would be free tomorrow when the moon filled completely; until then it would lie quietly until Adrienne let it out. The dark-haired girl folded her legs to the side and smoothed out the creases in her dress.

"So what are we having for dinner?" She asked sweetly as she leaned in close to Zach, pretending to peek into the basket of food he had brought. She probably would have smelled what was in the basket were her mind not so focused on the fact that she wanted to jump Zach at that very moment. Thank goodness she had been working hard in her Inner Beast Control class and utilizing the techniques her professor taught otherwise the situation could go in a completely different direction.

He couldn’t help but smile, though it looked a little timid and childish, when she said it was perfect. Consciously, the purpose hadn’t been for it to look romantic. After candles implanted themselves in his mind, Zach thought a dark evening in a room with windows would look great with little lights everywhere. Hence, candles. Any other way to get the same effect of small lights everywhere evaded him, and Zach hoped secretly candles hadn’t been too much or denoted anything in particular that he hadn’t been thinking of for them tonight.

In fact, the farthest thing from his mind right now happened to be any sort of nakedness or rolling around on the blankets. Adrienne’s rogue thoughts stayed in her head, which was for the best. Even better than that, she successfully suppressed the wolf-like instincts trying to come forth with the full moon so close. With any luck, that control would be maintained throughout their time up here tonight. Zach’s expectations for their first date included them talking and enjoying the food . . . and that was about it.

“Um,” Zach had already taken out some of it, so his hands gestured towards the three or four different kinds of sandwiches he had made. “I wasn’t sure what you liked, so I made a couple of different things. If you like meat, panini with lots of red meat, lettuce, and veggies. If not, there’s egg salad sandwiches. If you like fish, I have something I used to always make a home, so it’s kinda my own recipe.” Zach glanced over to smile at her before returning to naming things again. “I also made two salads,” he added gesturing at them since they were already out, but still wrapped.

“In the basket,” Zach continued, bringing it closer so he could take out all of the other things he had stocked up on for their meal. There were various whole fruits, chopped fruit dishes, stuffed rolls, cold pasta side dishes, and vegetables. “To drink,” and he indicated the drink containers he had filled, “water, lemonade, or tea.” Zach bit onto his bottom lip, beginning to feel maybe he had made or brought too much. “I wasn’t sure what you liked,” he said a little insecurely, glancing over and just noticing Adrienne’s closeness.

While his mind might have focused on hoping he had something here that Adrienne liked, Zach remembered something Starbuck told him about the were-ladies ‘rearing’ to go this close to the full moon. He wouldn’t have thought that of Adrienne, had even played it off when Starbuck mentioned it, but he saw something on her face that looked a little feral as her teeth grazed her lip — and she wasn’t looking at the food.

Zach stood up from his spot and moved over to the other side of the food to put some distance between the two of them. He went to work on setting everything out for selection and decided it was best if they sat across from each other and not beside each other. Kissing her at any time tonight was probably a bad move, which meant he had to suppress his own urges even if they were just innocent ones.

Zach's sudden decision to move across from her didn't go unnoticed by Adrienne. The initial reaction that struck her had her immediately taking offense to the action, instantly thinking that he didn't want to be near her. That he really was afraid of her even after all of his admonitions that he wasn't! The nerve! The audacity! The...

Adrienne bit her tongue and calmed the rage that grew in her heart. Her logical mind had to take over in order to calm the upsurge of the beast. If Zach didn't want to be with her he wouldn't have gone through all this trouble to set up the date. If he were afraid of her he wouldn't even be here right now. He had taken such great care to set everything up for them, and they were official now. Things like that meant something to Zach - he wouldn't have asked her out if he didn't mean it.

She realized he probably moved in order to keep her from being tempted. It was sweet really since it told her that he was thinking of her and her well-being. Or maybe he was scared... Doubt entered her mind even though Adrienne knew that everything would be ruined if she let her more primal urges take control. She threw aside the feelings of doubt smiled at him from across the sea of food and then looked at the selection in front of her.

"I can't believe you made all of this for us," she said happily. "Everything looks great! And you definitely did a good thing by bringing lots." She laughed and looked down shyly, averting her eyes from Zach. She was slightly embarrassed by the fact that she would probably eat more than Zach on their date that night. Adrienne's appetite always increased a couple days preceding the moon. She supposed it was her body preparing for the transformation that was about to take place, or maybe it was just the way the wolf exerted itself. It didn't matter really since it manifested the same way: Adrienne eating like a horse.

She looked up and pushed some stray hair behind her ear. "Um... don't be surprised if I happen to eat a lot, okay? I know girls are supposed to be delicate flowers or something..." What was it that Adrienne's mother used to tell her? To always be dainty on a date and to never eat more even if you want to. Of course, it was always in Adrienne's tendencies to pig out with her friends, but dates required making the best impression and that wasn't accomplished by stuffing your face.

"And not eat a lot, but I don't think I can really follow that rule tonight. Weres tend to get really hungry on the day or two before the full moon." Ah, her cheeks were burning with heat and she knew she was redder than usual. "I mean, I'm not going to go all crazy and dive into the food or anything!" She had self-control after all, and that image just didn't seem appealing in her eyes. "I just mean that you probably won't have to worry about left overs."

She laughed at herself and shook her head. She was nervous and desperately trying to control the beast. All it took though was the thought that this night was important to her and Zach, and that Zach was too important to her to let the wolf have its way. Thinking of Zach and then looking at him sitting there across from her calmed her and her heartbeat slowed down significantly. Adrienne took a deep breath and reached for two cups.

"I think we should have a toast!" She handed a cup to Zach and then reached for the containers. "So what'll it be?"

Zach moved to ensure there was no jumping of anyone tonight. He certainly didn’t think she was going to morph at any moment and maul him into pieces, but he also didn’t want her to leap at him and tear his clothes off either. It would end in disaster if that happened, Zach knew it, so he sat about three feet away from her and erected an invisible barrier with the distance. Not too far, but not too close either. Keep it simple. Zach called himself crazy for planning the date tonight, which seemed to have more truth to it than he realized at the time.

A smile from Adrienne brightened him up, though, and drew a smile out of him, too. His muscles, tense from being unsure of how Adrienne would react to him moving away, eventually relaxed, and Zach sat there with a casual and loose posture. “I did? I hope so,” Zach said, reaching around to rub the back of his neck a little. His lunch consisted of barely anything today, so by now he was starving and if Adrienne didn’t eat the food, he definitely would scarf it down. “I don’t know about you, but I’m starving,” he told her with a smile.

His brow furrowed at what he thought was embarrassment on Adrienne’s face. Such a look confused him, since nothing embarrassing had just happened. It wasn’t until she revealed her worries that he understood the reason for the coloring of her cheeks and the downward aim of her eyes. “Why would I be surprised? If you’re hungry, eat,” Zach said rather enthusiastically, gesturing at the food to indicate that’s what it was there for in the first place. “I hope you aren’t a delicate flower,” he joked with a smile. “Every time we had dinner, you’d think Alicia hadn’t eaten for weeks with the way she munched down on food. It was adorable.” He laughed slightly, recalling memories of home.

Zach quickly went to unwrapping things, so Adrienne could take her pick and put whatever she wanted onto her plate. “Don’t worry about it,” Zach said, shrugging. “It’s not like it’s a bunch of unhealthy food, anyway. Eat whatever you like. If there’s nothing left over, that’s good since it’s less for me to carry back.” He laughed again. “I’m starving, though, so don’t act like you’re the only one eating tonight.” In fact, he was ready to start digging in now. “Oh crap, I almost forgot—”

Diving into the basket once more, he started pulling out a few more wrapped dishes. There were four total, each one holding a different dessert. They weren’t very big desserts since a single plate fit into his palm. “I took four desserts from the kitchen, too.” Two of them were cake desserts, and the other two were interesting and, well, he wasn’t quite sure what they were. One was made of various chocolate-flavored parts, the main part of it being chocolate mousse. The other was possibly a brownie of sorts, though it wasn’t brown but yellowish, with caramel syrup and nuts.

“A toast sounds good,” Zach agreed with a grin, and he took the cup she offered to him. “I’ll take lemonade.” Once they both had their cups full of their chosen drink, he held out his glass with an exaggerated look of thinking on his face. “Hmmm,” he said slowly, “what is our toast tonight going towards?” Zach didn’t leave room for Adrienne to reply, though, and immediately continued forward. This time, however, his voice was serious.

“To you, for finally sending a letter off to your parents,” Zach began. “To Frankie, for showing up and giving you family. To our friends, for being blockheads who care about us very much.” Here, he paused, as a small smile came to his face. “And to us.” He didn’t say anything else about the last one, thinking nothing more needed to be said. “Is there anything you would like to add to that?” he asked softly.

Adrienne laughed at their banter and heaved a sigh of relief. This was nice, just spending time with Zach and actually talking with him. It wasn't that they hadn't had a conversation before, but now that their relationship had moved to the next level they felt comfortable enough to talk about personal things. She smiled at his story about Alicia and her eating habits, and then laughed at his statement of being starving.

"I bet I can eat more than you," she said with a smile that wrinkled her nose. "When I was a kid, Jason and I always had eating contests. My mom would get so angry because we would just scarf down our dinners to see who could finish the first or eat the most." Adrienne remembered how she and Zach had mini-competitions when they first started talking and hanging out. It was always friendly of course, and Adrienne issued her current challenge in the same way. There was a twinkle in her eyes that became visible when she tilted her head to the side. She wasn't worried anymore about what Zach would think of her stuffing her face; in fact, there was very little on her mind beyond enjoying her time with Zach.

There was something about him that had the ability to calm and excite the beast within Adrienne. Being so close to the full did make Adrienne a little more animalistic and friskier than usual; add to that the fact that she was already attracted to Zach and it was a dangerous combination. But at the same time his presence calmed the rising of the beast by grounding Adrienne to her true self and to everything that was important to her.

Adrienne sighed happily and leaned to the side, propping her body with her left arm while holding her cup of lemondade in her right hand. She was smiling at him as he spoke, the exaggerated look on his face causing her to giggle softly. He was simply wonderful and she could barely believe that she had gotten lucky enough to have him in her life. Her smile softened when he offered his toast, his words causing her breath to catch momentarily. A lump had formed in her throat and she swallowed it slowly, her eyes glossing over slightly with tears at his sincerity.

She chewed on her lower lip for a moment before speaking. "To you, for giving me the strength to finally send my letter to my parents, and for not giving up on me." She smiled at him and extended her cup forward. "And to us."

Adrienne liked the sound of that. She liked being a part of an 'us', especially when the other part of that 'us' was Zach.

“I bet you can’t,” he shot back with a quirk to his lips that closely resembled a smirk. He snagged a few grapes and popped them into his mouth. “If you wanna make a bet on that, I’m all for it.” Zach picked out things one by one, adding them to his plate if he wanted them. He laughed at her tale of her and Jason. “We never really had contests with who could eat the fastest or the most, but we used to do stuff that annoyed the hell out of my dad. Like throwing food at each other to catch it. Mom laughed at least,” Zach added with a grin on his face.

Their playful talk soothed any tension in the air. Zach also hoped it removed the worry of tomorrow from Adrienne’s mind. Those in the were-group were all feeling uneasy and crazy right now, and he didn’t want Adrienne to feel that way. Therefore, he had planned this simple picnic date to unwind her twisting nerves.

After he had given his toast, he waited on her reply to it. Was it a good toast? He noticed a shimmer from her eyes, but it could have just been the light from the candles’ flames. Orange flickers in the windows danced around them, reflecting off of her eyes maybe. Adrienne added to his toast, bringing a warm smile to his face. His smiling tonight and his happy attitude these past two days seemed like he was making up for his time spent upset. He was carefree and content now. Nothing could destroy that or change it after they had made up.

He leaned forward to press his cup to hers for their toast and drank some of the lemonade. Settling down on the blankets afterwards, he pulled over one of the cushions and rested his chest on it. Zach started eating, beginning on his sandwich. His plate was full of other things he had stacked on it. Occasionally, he grabbed for some fruit or pasta in between eating his sandwich. It was a habit of his to never eat just one thing at a time.

A question popped into his head that had been plaguing him for a while now. It was the fact that so many people called her Addy, and Zach wondered where the name came from and who started calling her that. “So, you know how Nico calls me Kit?” Zach began, the mention of it seeming completely random. “But I absolutely hate that name,” he told her with a low chuckle.

“Anyway,” Zach went on with an amused look on his face, “I threaten people whenever they try to pick it up from him because I only don’t care if it comes from him. I prefer being called Zach, even if that isn’t my real name.” Zechariah. If only Zach actually went by that confounded thing. “He started calling me that because he said I needed a nickname, and I refused ‘Ken’ on the grounds that I wasn’t having any Barbie jokes aimed at me. So, instead of calling me ‘Ken’ because of Kenai, Nico called me ‘Kit’ because if Kitano.” Kit was better than Ken at any rate, but Zach heard his share of Kit-Kat jokes because of it.

“Well, I wanted to know,” he continued slowly, “why do people call you Addy? Or, well, where did it come from, I guess. I mean, it seems like everyone who knows you, or knows of you, only calls you Addy. No one calls you Adrienne.” Zach frowned, his eyebrows drawing together. “I don’t really like the name Addy, though. I couldn’t tell you why. I prefer to call you Adrienne. Adrienne’s just . . . much better than Addy.”

Adrienne thought it was a beautiful toast and the only reason she hadn't said anything right away was because she didn't want to start crying like a baby. Adrienne was a little bit emotional that night, she couldn't help it considering the full moon that grinned at her from above, beckoning her darker self to come forth. It truly did give new meaning to "that time of the month" and Adrienne found herself almost looking forward to her other cycle only because the hormonal shifts weren't so extreme.

She took a drink from her cup after they pressed them together. A smile drew itself up on her lips. "That was a beautiful toast, and this is really good lemonade." She giggled and put the cup down before she started to reach for some food. "You do realize that there's no WAY you could out-eat a werewolf on the night before the full moon, right?" If there was ever a challenged being issued it was right then and there as she took a bite out of her sandwich, her eyebrows bouncing up and down playfully as she chewed.

Adrienne was in a good mood... no, a GREAT mood. There was no anxiety scratching beneath the surface, or fear. No dreading of her painful transformation and amazingly, she wasn't even feeling that sore at the moment! She followed Zach's example and grabbed a pillow to lay on. They were now eye level with one another as they each picked at the food in front of them. Adrienne's feet automatically kicked up in the air and she dangled them playfully, her ankles rotating her feet left and right, up and down.

"Yeah I've heard Nico call you that," she said in reference to the name 'Kit'. "I think it's cute." Of course, she'd never call him that because she knew he didn't like it, but that didn't take away from the cuteness of the name. "I really like your name though... Zechariah." She let his name roll off her tongue as her eyes stared at a non-distinct point out the window. She was popping grapes into her mouth absently before she eyes focused back on Zach, her ears catching his question about her nickname.

"Honestly, I don't know how Addy spread through the school so fast," she said as she took another bite of her fish sandwich. It was really good and apparently Zach's own recipe. She'd have to be sly and grab the other one before Zach got to it first, but only after she told her story. "Considering I only gave Starbuck permission to call me that. I didn't even come up with the name, it was this guy I met when I first came here." She rolled her eyes at the memory of Simon and a low growl escaped her throat.

"I shouldn't even call him 'a guy' since he was more like a jerk." Ooooh, pasta salad! She reached to put some on her plate before she realized she hadn't told Zach the story about Simon. She had meant to in the past but something always came up first. Adrienne put down her plate and caught Zach's gaze.

"His name was Simon. He was a born-Were... I was a new Were looking for some sort of understanding of all this. My wolf wanted to connect with him and I naively let the wolf take the reins." She sighed and shook her head. "So dumb... I thought I liked him..." She scoffed as her face contorted into a look that showed her disgust. "He came up with the name 'Addy' - said that Adrienne was too long to keep saying. I never introduce myself as that though so I don't know where people get it from. Luce calls me Addy-wa for different reasons, but she's the exception." She shrugged and sighed. "I like that you call me Adrienne," she admitted with a sweet smile. There was just something about the way that Zach said her name that gave her goosebumps all over.

"My parents sometimes call me Adria," she continued to tell Zach with a shy grin. "My grandpa calls me Fioré. Frankie calls me Reenie. And my brother... well he calls me Husky."

Zach narrowed his eyes at her in a playful manner. “It’s not cute,” he admonished. “It’s evil.” Zach didn’t hate the name, but he didn’t love it either. Simply, he just preferred to be known by ‘Zach’ and not some funny, non-name nickname. A person needed distinct permission to call him ‘Kit,’ or he would in fact do something evil to them. It kept the nickname from spreading, that was for sure.

The corner of his lips quirked upwards in a small smile. “Zechariah is . . . an interesting name,” he admitted, “but when I was a child, I couldn’t say it or spell it.” He snorted lightly in amusement, took another bite out of his sandwich and chewed and swallowed before speaking again. “All I could say was ‘Zeck’ when I was a toddler,” he revealed, laughing aloud. “Alicia could only say ‘Zeck,’ but Jared could say Zechariah in full. So, they thought they’d wait for me to learn it, but I started calling myself ‘Zach.’ Well, then I started elementary school, and my teachers started calling me ‘Zachariah.’ I didn't like it, though, and the kids couldn’t say the whole thing, so then everyone started calling me ‘Zach’ when I said I preferred that. It sounded better than Zeck, at any rate.” Shrugging his shoulders, he met Adrienne’s eyes with a silly smile. “I’ve been Zach ever since.”

Once his explanation had ended, it was time to listen to Adrienne after he had posed his question about her nickname. Leaning forward on his elbows, Zach busied himself with eating as she spoke. He listened contently until he heard a growl, which startled him a little. His eyes glanced up to see the look on her face. Annoyance at the memory of whoever this guy was to her then. It made sense as she went on to tell her story in full, and some part of him said he must’ve known this all along to have disliked the name Addy as much he did.

He never liked it from the beginning, even when he heard others first calling Adrienne that name. Her own introduction of herself included the name Adrienne, so that’s what he called her. Besides, he liked her first name. Addy was another matter altogether. Of course, Zach blamed it on the way ‘Addy’ sounded to him — childish and just a little annoying. He wondered if that described this guy she was talking about accurately enough. After all, if he came up with it . . .

“Your parents call you Adria?” Zach inquired, tilting his head to the side with a quizzical look on his face. “That’s a pretty name.” He grinned at what her grandpa called her. “Fioré? Where did that come from?” The last two nicknames she told him caused him to chuckle again. They were funny. He couldn’t help it. “I should start calling you Husky,” Zach said with a twinkle in his eyes. Okay, maybe not all the time. Special occasions only. He liked saying ‘Adrienne’ too much to switch over to something like ‘Husky.’

A thoughtful look crossed his face. “I’m mostly just Zach. Zechariah if my parents are being serious or angry with me. My mom sometimes calls me Kenai or Shey’a, but she calls me and Jared Shey’a. My grandmother calls us by our given names if she’s addressing us amongst each other, but in private she always calls me Shgguya.” Zach met Adrienne’s eyes, a soft smile on his face. “It means ‘my little one.’”

Eyes glancing downward, Zach stared at the blanket. There was one thing that always bugged him. In the view of his own eyes, he was Alaskan. In everyone else’s eyes, they always saw an Asian boy. His guide teacher told him something once about embracing both sides, and Zach figured he couldn’t blame people for hearing his last name and going from there. Sighing softly, he shook his head and took another two bites out of his sandwich and finished it.

*Shey’a = (shee-uh) ‘my son’
*Shgguya = (shh-goya) ‘my little one’

"Your name is waaaay more interesting than mine," she said with a smile. "Adrienne Marie Conté is so boring compared to Zechariah Kenai Kitano." She liked saying Zach's full name out loud; it just rolled off her tongue easily and it sounded so nice. "It just has so much history and meaning behind it. Adrienne just means 'dark one', which I guess means that my parents named for my hair." She pulled at a strand of her hair and glanced at it curiously before she laughed a little.

"My dad started calling me Adria first and then my mom picked up on it. I asked him a couple of years ago why he called me that, and he said that ever since I was little I reminded him of the Adriatic Sea. He didn't know why back then, but as I grew up he said I was more like the sea than he could have known - mysterious and beautiful and just as tumultuous." She shook her head and speared some cantaloupe to eat slowly. "Grandpa called me Fioré because I was his 'little flower' and Fioré means 'flower' in Italian." She blushed and took another bite, chewing carefully as she thought of her grandpa and how she missed being called Fioré even though she used to complain about it all the time.

"You start calling me Husky and it better not mean I'm getting fat or anything!" She winked to indicate she was joking and then laughed slightly. "I used to follow my brother around all the time when I was little, like a little puppy. He coulda called me 'mutt' or 'pup', but he settled on 'Husky' because of my eyes." They were sparkling now from the flickering flames of the candles that surrounded them. In the dimly lit room her eyes were dark, but in the day the differing colors of her eyes were easily seen. She arched a brow at him and rested her chin on her hand to listen to Zach as he spoke. He spoke so fondly of his childhood and especially of his grandmother. She wanted so badly to hug him right now, but she didn't want to scare him especially if he thought she couldn't control her more primal urges.

"Shgguya," she said softly... serenely. "I like that, it sounds nice. I'd call you that, but I'm the little one in this relationship, aren't I?" Adrienne smirked at her comment about their respective heights. While they could look each other in the eye, Zach was taller than Adrienne by an inch. "How would you say 'my dearest one' in Dena'ina? That's right, isn't it? I remember you telling me once..." She blushed, worried that she was mistaken about the language that he spoke and proceeded to finish her sandwich to subdue the red color on her face. Adrienne reached for another once she was done but she didn't eat it right away. She watched Zach carefully as he stared at the blanket and his mood seemed to hit a downward slope.

"What's the matter, tesoro?" She asked quietly with a slightly furrowed brow. His change in mood worried her and she wanted to help it... somehow. But she couldn't unless she knew what was wrong. So wrapped up in her worry for him that she didn't even notice that she had slipped in an Italian word in her question to him.

“My name is just strange,” Zach commented with a small laugh. Hearing her full name, however, made him smile in response. “Your name is pretty, though.” The urge came forth to humorously scoff at what she had said about his name. “It sounds like there’s history behind it, but I have no idea where Zechariah came from. The name Zachary is actually from the name Zechariah, though. It’s sort of the ‘root’ of all Zach names. I suppose being called Zach for short still fits, in that case . . . ” Zach looked thoughtful for a moment, having forgotten about that and just remembering it again. “Anyway, Kenai is something my mother chose, so it has some meaning behind it with her people, but Kitano is just my dad’s last name.”

Something about her name sounded beautiful to him, even though it sounded boring to her. “I like Adrienne Marie Conté,” he told her, in between taking bites of the fruit on his plate. Biting onto his bottom lip, he smiled softly. “It sounds beautiful to me.” Just as easily as his name rolled off of her tongue, her name rolled smoothly off of his, too. Odd, how neither of them liked their names and yet liked the other’s name. A silly grin threatened to overwhelm his face.

Adrienne spoke of the stories behind her various nicknames. The tale of how she received ‘Adria’ caused a mysterious look of thoughtfulness on his face. In her appearance and her personality, she lived up to how her father described the Adriatic Sea. Fitting name for her, whereas at first he couldn’t be sure why anyone would have called her that unless it was just another way to say Adrienne. ‘Fioré’ made him smile. Zach burst into laughter once she scolded that he better not call her ‘Husky’ if it meant he thought she was getting fat. “Because of your eyes?” he finally asked, his voice gentle, remembering the different colors of her eyes. Coupled with her dark hair, it was her best physical feature. Gazing at her eyes from across the small space between him, he eventually realized he was staring and went back to poking at slices of fruit.

“You might be the little one by height,” Zach joked with Adrienne, “but I’m the little one by years. I think Grandma calling me that had more to do with my age than size.” Her next statement earned a nod out of him as he chewed on his lip and looked off at one of the windows to think. “It’s Dena’ina,” he agreed softly while nodding, “but I’m not sure how to say ‘dearest one,’ or if there’s a word for it . . . ” Zach glanced back towards Adrienne, his eyes seeming darker than usual. “There’s only family terms that I know . . . ” Cheeks reddening, his averted his eyes from Adrienne by looking at his plate. “The closest thing that I know would be sh’utda, but that means ‘dear wife.’”

Learning a term for ‘dearest one’ from his father’s side might be easier, and maybe then he would be doing what his teacher told him was good for him to do: embrace both sides of his heritage and not just one. Japanese was a much more common language than Dena’ina, at any rate. Zach shouldn’t have any trouble learning terms from that, although he heard pronunciation was a big deal and Zach only spoke one language fluently.

Lifting his eyes to meet Adrienne’s gaze, Zach gave a little shrug of his shoulders. “It’s nothing. Well, not much, anyway. I just remembered something one of my teachers told me. About embracing both sides of my heritage, even though I know more about one than the other.” Here, his hand reached up to scratch at his head. “I tend to be more vocal and proud about my mom’s side of things, too.”

She was quiet for a moment, wondering if he meant anything by his 'age' statement. Adrienne was older than Zach by four years, but she was never bothered by age in the slightest. Hell, she didn't even think about it at all. But Zach's comment, as casual as it was, caused her to believe that Zach might have been bothered by it. But if he was, then why was he here with her in the first place? Why had he asked her to be his girlfriend if age mattered?

"Because it doesn't matter to him, idiot!" She scolded herself quietly before she smiled at Zach.

"Sh'utda is nice," Adrienne said as she refrained from making a comment about the dear wife part. His blush told her that it was slightly embarrassing for him so she remained quiet about it. She took a big bite from her sandwich and chewed it slowly as she watched Zach carefully. His eyes lifted to meet hers eventually and he spoke of embracing both sides of his heritage. Adrienne felt the same way about her Italian heritage, but that was mostly because her mother had embraced it as well and their entire family followed the traditions her father had introduced to them. Adrienne knew very little of her mother's heritage beyond the fact that they had distant relatives in England.

"I think it's really nice that you're proud of your mother's heritage, it's a big part of who you are. But so is your dad's side... both of them together make you the person you are. Besides it's never too late to learn about your Japanese heritage." She smiled sweetly at him, her head tilting to the side. "I know more about my Italian heritage than my mom's British heritage. She always said that her family's been in the States so long that it wasn't important to know about ancient history. I never pressed it before, but I sorta wish I did. Maybe it's not too late for the both of us, hrm?"

She reached for her lemonade and took a long drink before setting it down. Adrienne licked her lips slowly and continued to eat the food that Zach had put together. A grape here, some slice apple there, a little bit of pasta salad and then back to her sandwich before she stopped and smiled playfully at Zach. "Sorry... hungry." She licked the corner of her mouth before wiping at it with a napkin. "You know what I was wondering? How in the world you and Nico became friends? He's just... very unlike you, or is that why you two click?"

Age never crossed Zach's mind when it came to them. Never as a serious topic, anyway. It was possible it might all dawn on him sometime in the future and he'd panic over it, but the future wasn't right now. He didn't have a reason to panic at the moment over something that currently didn't play a factor in their relationship. Not that it would play a big factor in the future, but Zach was good at worrying if he let himself.

As for the blush, that was because Zach wasn't about to start calling anyone sh'utda. Certainly not his girlfriend. So, yes, it was embarrassing even just to mention it. Adrienne didn't say anything in regards to it, though, for which he was thankful. Their conversation continued on with the two of them talking about their heritage. What Adrienne said was true: it was never too late to start learning about it, and both sides did make up the person.

"You're right," he said. "They're both a big part. It's just . . . anytime I would pick up something Japanese or try to use it, my dad wasn't—" Zach bit his lip. "He wasn't very happy about it, usually. So, I just stopped looking into it. If anything, he was very encouraging of us to embrace my mother's side of things. I never really got it, though." Truly, he didn't get it. Then again, they never talked about that sort of thing. Kind of hard to understand something when two people never sit down and talk about it. Zach had learned that lesson recently with Adrienne.

He smiled at what she said about herself. "Italian," Zach echoed. "I've always wanted to go to Italy. But yeah, I don't think it's too late. For either of us. I seem to be on my own now, anyway." Another grin and glance towards his plate. Resting his chin in his hand, he picked at what was left of the food along with Adrienne. He laughed when she apologized, having grabbed half of the panini himself.

"Hmm?" he asked at the beginning of her newest inquiry. Snorting halfway into the bite of his toasted sandwich, he had to chew what was in his mouth and put the sandwich down before he could answer her. After a swallow, he thought about how to begin that one. "Well, our fathers knew each other. They worked together, colleagues. They arranged this big dinner with our families, and I'm not really quite sure how it happened." Zach laughed. "He just started talking to me, and I talked back, and then we were friends. I dunno."

Zach gazed over at Adrienne. "I was a recluse. Still sorta am. Reclusive people don't mesh well with other reclusive people, so . . . Nico brought me out of my shell, I guess."

"I love Japanese culture and history," Adrienne said in between nibbles. "I had to take a year of Asian history for my major so I chose the classes on Japan. First semester was pre-history up to the Heian Period, and then second semester was from the Feudal Era to the present. It was really interesting - our professor was really good, too. Always made class fun." She sighed dreamily. "Japan is definitely on my 'places to visit' list." She nodded to add emphasis to her point and then finished off the rest of the pineapple she had speared.

"Oh you should definitely visit Italy!" Adrienne was reminded of vacations with her family when they would visit their relatives in Italy and Sicily. It was always so beautiful there and everyone so relaxed and friendly. No one ever felt out of place. She tilted her head at Zach and smiled. She'd love to show him around Italy, take him to all of her favorite places. Maybe someday they would, but right now wasn't the time to offer it. "When you go, you definitely need to visit the Adriatic Sea! Oh and the Roman Colosseum! It feels like you're walking through history. I love it!"

So Adrienne got a little excited when she talked about traveling and visiting historical sites. Those were two of her passions, after all. If she could spend the rest of her life traveling the world and visiting exotic places, she would. But that required money that she didn't have yet. She'd just have to win the lottery or something.

"So your dad and Nico's dad worked together?" Adrienne asked after she heard Zach's story. "What does your dad do anyway? I don't think I've ever asked before." She looked upward as she tried to recall whether or not Zach had mentioned it before, even though she was fairly certain he hadn't. It didn't matter though since she had already asked her question. Hopefully Zach wouldn't mind answering it. "So you two met over a family dinner and just went on from there? And Nico yanked you out of your shell?" She shook her head and laughed. "Sorry, but Nico just seems like a 'yanker' to me. He doesn't strike me as very patient at all."

Adrienne smiled sweetly at Zach wondering if he was a recluse because of his powers. Was his situation like Frankie's where he had to stay away from people just to keep his secret? It pained her to think that he had to go through that, but she supposed she understood the reasons behind it. But it didn't make it any easier with reasons. Frankie had actual physical traits that betrayed her supernatural lineage and because of that she had to stay away from people. But here was Zach, a perfectly normal looking guy who basically had to do the same thing, or at least that was the impression she got from his statement. But what Adrienne couldn't understand was why Zach had to distance himself from others. His powers were amazing and she couldn't imagine anyone thinking otherwise. Even if she wasn't used to the idea of praeternaturals or metahumans, even Adrienne would be able to appreciate the gifts of an alchemist and find them fascinating.

"Why were you a recluse?" She said quietly finally deciding to just ask. There was no point in assuming things when she could just ask him directly. "Or were you just shy when you were younger?"

“Then,” Zach concluded, “maybe you can teach me about that part of my heritage.” He couldn’t help it; he laughed out loud. Not because it was ridiculous, but just because it was funny that Adrienne probably and most definitely knew more about Japanese culture and history than him. Maybe even a little embarrassing, but it wasn’t like it was a big deal. “You can help me on my quest to discover more about my dad’s side of the family.”

Her enthusiasm for Italy struck him as cute, the way she kept mentioning things he had to visit while there. It was one of those old spots in the world that had caught his interest. Ancient ruins from civilizations long ago and still standing in the midst of modern construction. There were a few places like that he wanted to visit, and now that one of his new friends had brought up China, Zach realized that was also on his list. He’d have to learn how to make diamonds so he could sell them and pay his way for world travel. Okay, maybe that was the one selfish thought that crossed his mind. Hell, he could sell sapphires and rubies and emeralds and still make enough for it.

Zach nodded. “Yep, they work together. My dad is currently a college professor. Before that, he was in business and also worked as a translator. He got bored with it, though. He said he loved languages and words, wanted to do something with that. Of course, my dad settles for nothing but the best, so college professor it was. On top of his job, he began pursuing the right degrees to teach in college. Dropped his old job, became a professor, and eventually got his doctorate degree. He’s been one ever since.” Biting into a nectarine, Zach chewed before speaking again. “Ha, yeah, he’s a yanker. Nico doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer, and I think that was the kind of friend I needed.”

Adrienne’s next question was unexpected. Of course, there was a whole history behind that one. After taking one more bite out of his fruit, Zach placed it down and chewed carefully before swallowing. “Well, when I was younger, I couldn’t change things on purpose. I could only do it on accident. It started when I was about four, I think. If I got upset, angry, overly excited, and I was holding something in my hand, it would just suddenly . . . morph, almost instantaneously, into something else. I used to only accidentally do it around kids because that’s who I was always around, and everyone just thought we were playing when they said ‘he changed it, he changed it.’ My parents stressed not to do it in front of people, and I tried.” Zach propped up his elbow and rested his cheek against it.

“Eventually, I was around five or six. I did it in front of the parents of a kid I was friends with. I was upset, and I wanted to go home because him and me fought over something stupid. Kids, y’know. Well, I was holding this toy car made out of some kind of very light metal. And they were trying to calm me down, saying my mother was coming to get me soon. I was yelling, and all of a sudden, the car got too heavy to hold. I dropped it, but it hurt my arm. I started crying, and his dad went to pick it up, and . . . it was so heavy. And the color was different because it wasn’t painted.”

Zach had to take a deep breath before continuing. “His dad immediately threw it away. Said, ‘Get this child out of my house.’ I don’t think they knew what happened, but they knew something strange had happened. They put me outside and closed the door. I banged on the door for a while, but then I just went and waited for my mom on the sidewalk. My parents were scared. They knew something worse could’ve happened. The next day, my dad gave me a lecture on what was acceptable social interaction for me. He gave me that lecture every day until I remembered it by heart.”

His eyes were glassed over, a far away look in them. “I wasn’t allowed to go to anyone’s house. I wasn’t allowed to go on field trips unless my mom could come with me. I wasn’t allowed to have . . . friends anymore. I rebelled a few times. It only proved him right, though.”

Adrienne let out a soft chuckle and then nodded her head. "Sure, I can teach you about Japanese history and all the technical stuff about it. But you're going to have to do the rest when it comes to family. Maybe if I ever get to meet your dad though, then I can totally poke him for information for you." She smiled at him more, her nose wrinkling in the process. The last thing she wanted was to embarrass Zach about Japanese history; Adrienne was a history major and it was part of her studies. She never would have thought that the knowledge she gained there would somehow help her in a future relationship. Looking back on it though, she was glad for it if that meant it helped her get to know a little more about Zach.

She listened intently to Zach talk about his father, and then the relationship he shared with Nico. It was interesting to hear how their friendship had started and while Nico hadn't exactly rubbed Adrienne the right way, she was glad that Zach had a friend he could count on and trust. Maybe in time, she would see that side of Nico as well and she would understand the way that Zach felt about his friend. "Sometimes you have to be pushy in order to make someone move," she said finally as she took a sip of her drink. "Otherwise that person won't do anything. I'm not normally the type that needs to be pushed but... " she paused a little and sighed. "Well, I think that me becoming a werewolf has just really thrown me for a loop. Eventually I'll get back to being me, with a little help, y'know?" Adrienne didn't mention who she would need help from, but she secretly hoped it would be Zach. For some reason she felt that he was good for her and that if anyone could help her find her way home, it would be him.

Zach's story of his childhood saddened the werewolf. She finally understood why he wasn't good with interacting with people; he had been restricted from it his entire life because his father feared that he would be rejected. And he had been by scared parents and children, people who were too ignorant to keep an open mind about the fact that people were inherently different from one another. If something like that were to happen in an earlier time it would be over something like race or skin color. Adrienne couldn't help but draw the similarities between the situations.

"I'm sorry," she managed to say at the end of it all. What else could she say to him after a story like that? There was nothing in her history that was like that whatsoever. No one had ever treated her badly or yelled at her for something she couldn't control. She was just an ordinary girl who just happened to act like a tomboy. The only thing that she ever did that deserved a serious lecture was the time she accidentally hurt the boy down the street in a wrestling match they had. He said he could beat her up, and she proved him wrong.

But that was nothing... nothing compared to what Zach had to go through. A part of her wished she could make it better somehow, but how does anyone go about making up for things in the past?

"Things are different now though, for you I mean. You can control your ability and you have tons of friends here and people who care about you. People who don't reject you because of what you can do. The world isn't full of people like the ones you met when you were a kid. Maybe it's time to prove your father wrong... prove to him that sometimes being different is what brings you closer to the thing that you've been looking for your entire life."

Zach chuckled softly at her remark about her being able to teach it to him but him having to do the rest with his dad. Zach wasn't embarrassed about it, and he wouldn't have become embarrassed over it. He had never been the type to get embarrassed over a lack of information. While he did good in school, he was never one of the acing students. Jared made better grades than him, and Jared was a blockhead if there ever was one. If anything, other people might try to bother him about it, but at most Zach would blush and throw something small at them while telling them to shut up. Zach knew he would appreciate it if she helped him with that part of his family and his past. After all, the curiosity had always been there, but his father had just always been blocking it off from him.

A smile of agreement appeared on his face as he gazed at her. "Yeah, Nico's my foil. If English class taught me anything, it taught me that," he joked. Zach bit onto the corner of his lower lip as he listened to her describe herself. Adrienne was different from him personality-wise. Did that make them compliment each other as they had these past few months? "I am," Zach admitted softly. He thought about that as he looked at her, about how she was different from him and yet they seemed to go hand-in-hand, like foils of each other. Complimenting halves that seemed to fit together. His thoughts caused his cheeks to redden, and he glanced down at the blanket. "Maybe that's why I like you," he added in a shy voice, not meeting her eyes when he said it. Zach cleared his throat and aimed his gaze at a window to his right, wanting to look anywhere but at Adrienne during that moment.

Eventually, he made himself look back at her and nodded his head. "You'll get back on track," Zach told her with an encouraging smile. "You just gotta give it time, and you've got friends and family to help you through it — help you get used to it, you know?" There was a part of him that wanted to be one of the people to help her. He wondered if they would get close enough for that, or if she would want him to be a part of that. Zach hadn't encountered a werewolf in action, but even so, knowing Adrienne prior to the whole werewolf thing made him always see her as a human being first. Zach wasn't sure why he did that: why human came before werewolf or vampire, but it did for him.

His shoulders shrugged noncommittally. "It's okay," he said in response to her apology. "You go through stuff, and it's just kind of there, you know?" Zach looked up at Adrienne, wondering if she understood what he meant. "You can't change it, but sometimes it makes you angry. Sometimes it doesn't." That was his way of saying you can't change the past in the simplest terms possible. Letting out a heavy sigh, Zach lied down on the blanket and laid his head on one of the pillows. His stomach felt full.

The words she spoke resonated through the small tower and into his head as he lay there, staring upwards at the ceiling. "Yeah," Zach echoed, his voice sounding faraway. "This place is weird like that. Everything works the opposite way than in the real world. It's . . . " There had to be a word to describe it, and Zach sought for it as he chewed his lip. He laughed slightly. "I don't know what it is, to be honest."

"It's like Wonderland," Adrienne said in response to his last statement. "This place I mean." Her head bent to the side to watch him as he lay there with his eyes trained upon the ceiling. She smiled for no reason other than the fact that she was here with him. There was something about Zach that drew Adrienne in and while Zach hadn't spoken his thoughts out loud she too thought that they complimented each other. He inspired her to be brave again, to be the person she was before her life was turned upside down. He accepted her as she was - to him, Adrienne was a girl who happened to turn into a werewolf once a month. She wasn't a monster or a freak, she just was and his belief in her allowed Adrienne to accept that fact herself.

"Like Alice in Wonderland," she continued. "Through the looking glass everything is different and not how you expected it to be. But in the process of going through that world you find out a little bit more about yourself, and you come out being able to cope with things in the real world better. At least I think so." Adrienne sighed deeply and then let out a small laugh. For some reason she felt embarrassed by her little rant, and she hoped she hadn't just made a fool of herself in front of Zach. Her cheeks flushed at the thought and she immediately sought to ease her anxiety by rising to stand and stretching her arms above her head. "I'm stuffed!" Her comment was followed by a hand patting her stomach and another small laugh. She looked down at Zach again and chewed on her lower lip as an idea formed in her head.

Careful steps were taken around the food and toward Zach where Adrienne settled down next to him. She reclined her body to the floor and lied there beside him, her eyes staring up at the glassy ceiling and the moon that loomed overhead. Adrienne swallowed slowly as her hand reached out to touch Zach's. It was a shy act unlike others the pair had shared in the past, but there was something about this night that told her moving slow was best. "I'll be out there tomorrow night," she said almost sadly as she felt the beast pawing anxiously from deep within her. "Soooooo not looking forward to it." Adrienne laughed at herself and then sighed deeply. Her fingers sought out his for comfort as she laced them around his gently.

"But..." and here she began to blush deeply. "At least I can look forward to seeing you the day after. That makes it better..." Adrienne turned her head to look at Zach this time and smiled. "And it doesn't seem so bad if I know that you'll be here waiting for me when it's over."

Zach agreed with what she had said about this place; this school did seem to be like Alice in Wonderland, and there wasn't anything realistic about it, and yet here they were, actually working out problems that would be helpful to their real lives compared to drifting off and daydreaming. Maybe you couldn't daydream in such a setting. What was there to daydream about when the things of your dreams were walking around right in front of your face and you were told all of it was real? Zach think he faced more reality in this place than he had back home in the real world, which was strange to think about. All of the comparisons in his head were beginning to run together. Probably because of the food in his stomach.

Rolling his head over to look at her, he smiled as she announced he was stuffed and patted her stomach with a laugh. His eyebrows drew down questioningly and his head tilted somewhat to the side as Adrienne rose from her spot and walked around the food to his side. His heart pounded a little faster as she lied down beside him on the blanket, even though she stared at the glassy ceiling and not him. The close proximity was a lot for Zach, and though she reached out to hold his hand, and it didn't stop the pounding in his chest. Zach looked forward again, staring also at the ceiling, but noticing more and more her presence beside him. He held her hand back, maybe a little too loosely — or too tightly. He couldn't really tell.

But she began talking again, about the full moon tomorrow night and her shifting, and Zach felt himself becoming more aware of her trials than his current anxiety. Soooooo not looking forward to it. His hand held hers properly then, interlacing with hers as she made the motion to do so first. He was looking over at Adrienne, his thumb running gently over hers. Zach didn't want her to be afraid of the shift. From what he'd read about it, it was so painful . . . but he didn't want her to be afraid of that.

Zach blushed too at Adrienne's words, but his hand remained steady, linked with hers. "I'll be there," he said simply, and he turned to give Adrienne a smile before looking back up at the glassy ceiling at the moon and clouds beyond.
