The History of Zach and Adrienne: Take 8¾
Who: Zach and Adrienne
Where: The School's Auditorium
When: Thursday, February 15, 2007. Nighttime!
What: The Valentine's Day Dance itself! Someone spiked the punch, and Zach drank it.

Adrienne and Zach danced plenty with each other and with friends, and the evening wore on without a hitch. Zach grew thirsty at one point when Adrienne went to dance with one of her friends and promised to be back quickly. He smiled and watched her go, wandering over to the punch bowl for some refreshment and picking at a few of the more interesting looking snacks on the table strewn with holiday foods of red, white, and pink. Four or five cups later, he felt a little funny. Probably nothing. Maybe he just needed a little fresh air soon.

With the music suddenly halting, Zach looked to see what was going on. Ah, announcements for the king and queen and princes and princesses. Something like that, anyway. Shocked at hearing Adrienne’s name called, Zach glanced to see where she was as Adrienne hadn’t gotten back to him yet from her dance with her friend. Eventually, he spotted her halfway or more across the room. His stare followed her to the stage as she walked onto it with someone else who was called. Tristan something. Sounded like a dumb name out of a medieval movie. And what was it with this childish jealously? It’s not like they were actually royalty getting forced into an arranged marriage or anything.

Zach still crossed his arms, feeling petulant about it all. As a wave of light-headedness washed over him and calmed him, he scooped up more punch and looked around the floor at the faces there. Sighing out loud, he really felt like getting some fresh air after the ridiculous display on stage by that Tristan guy. At this point, the guy could just stand there doing absolutely nothing and Zach would find it ridiculous. He threw away his cup, picking up one of the chocolate covered strawberries and taking a bite out of it.

An excited grin sprouted across his face as he heard Eva’s name called. Well, that was good vote despite the fact that he hadn’t seen a picture of her or even met her when he voted for her. Pretty, leggy, and blonde. Typical queen material, although she did seem like a very cool person with a sharp mind whenever he talked to her and read her online journal entries. Zach gave her props for that. He whistled, clapping loudly and hollering along with the crowd.

Clearly, someone must have spiked the punch for him to be acting this way.

The huge group went to the auditorium and she and Zach spent several dances together. They chatted idly during their dances, telling stories or jokes or whatever else crossed their mind. It was a perfect night even when she had gone off to dance with a friend or two. Fifteen minutes had passed and Adrienne felt that it was time to head back to Zach, and she had almost reached him when she heard her name announced over the speaker. She paused and a spotlight found her.

Well, this was unexpected. Reluctantly she answered the call and made her way to the stage. She linked arms with Tristan and received her tiara and rose with a gracious smile. She stood upon the dais and scanned the crowd for Zach. Chewing on her lower lip softly, Adrienne worried that Zach would feel left out and she silently urged the ceremony to hurry up and finish.

It wasn't until several minutes after the announcement of the King and Queen (both of whom Adrienne had voted for) did Adrienne leave the stage as quickly as she could. She looked for Zach and headed toward the refreshment table since she remembered him saying he was thirsty. She found him there with the remnants of a chocolate covered strawberry in his hand and on the corner of his mouth. It was adorable and Adrienne seemed especially grateful that they were at the dance together considering what had happened the day before. She hadn't seen Nico at all (yet) and she wasn't complaining. It wasn't like she hated him or anything, but she was wary of him even if he was Zach's friend. She figured he'd grow on her eventually, but right now she was still stuck on the way he made her feel the day before. But that wasn't her concern now. Right now all she wanted was to be with Zach.

"Hey you," she said with a smile as she leaned in slowly, kissing the corner of his mouth to get the chocolate. "Hrm, you had some chocolate there." She wrinkled her nose at him and grinned as her hand went up to the tiara. "I can't believe I got princess." She paused and tilted her head to the side. "Mmm, but you know you're my prince, right?"

Once they dismissed everyone from the stage, it didn’t take long before Adrienne had found him. To his knowledge, there wasn’t anything stuck on the corner of his mouth from the snack he had been eating. When Adrienne leaned in and kissed the corner of his mouth in a ticklish way, confusion struck him momentarily. Her explanation came after she pulled away, though, and a funny look of ‘oops’ crossed his face. “Oh,” Zach said simply.

In any other situation like that, he would have blushed, especially considering they were in public. However, he was mildly inebriated and completely and totally unaware of the fact. His embarrassment dissipated for the time being, replaced by a more constant easy-going attitude.

Seeing her wrinkle her nose and lift her hand to touch her tiara with a grin, Zach found himself smiling. Even better, she asked him if he knew he was her prince after a pause. While entitled to not liking Tristan if he so pleased, that in no way affected his feelings towards Adrienne. Funny, how he never felt jealousy concerning any of her guy friends, but it always came up with strangers. Never significant jealousy, it was more like playground pushing. Maybe this time he just didn’t like feeling left out. A rare occurrence for him to like someone as much as he liked Adrienne, and it seemed like she was somewhat popular here.

He wondered if there were any other guys around that wanted to be with her.

Given his mildly inebriated state that lowered his inhibitions, Zach bit his lower lip in thought and wrapped his arms around her waist. “Hmmm,” he replied, clearly teasing her with the improvised response. He smiled slightly, reaching up to trace a finger along her tiara. It sparkled amongst her hair. Tilting his head to the side, he looked her in the eyes. “Does that mean I get to take you away?” he murmured, a small smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Just shortly before that moment, the fog machine turned on again. They were close to the wall where one was hidden. Not long after, a hazy white fog swirled around their feet. Zach took her by both hands to lead her out of the dance hall. He eventually dropped one of them, escorting her along with one. Fresh air, he kept thinking, but his hand was also holding hers and he thought of other things more plausible away from the sights of others.

Adrienne didn’t consider herself to be popular at the school. She knew that there were a couple of people who didn’t like her and that was just fine with Adrienne. You can’t please everyone, she’d say out loud with a shrug and a laugh. And it was the truth. Why worry about what other people thought especially since she had enough going on in her own life to worry about.

But she wasn’t going to worry about anything tonight. Tonight was a night of fun and dancing with friends that she had made at the school, which was to her own surprise quite a few. And they were wonderful people, the kind she never expected to find at a supernatural school when she first arrived at the school. It was her own disbelief that caused such doubt, but now she knew better.

She arched a brow at Zach’s response to her prince statement and smiled. He probably thought she was being cute when she said it, but deep down Adrienne meant it. Zach was unlike any other guy she had ever met in her life and she liked everything about him and there was still so much to learn about him. And god if he didn’t turn her on like crazy!

Adrienne liked that he slipped his arms around her waist. It made her answer that much easier. “Of course it does. You can take me anywhere you want.” His smirk was contagious and one formed on her lips as well. When he took her hands and lead her out of the dance, Adrienne guessed that he meant his statement literally. She didn’t mind, though since she was beginning to feel a little stuffy in the auditorium. She looked down at their intertwined hands and smiled softly as Zach lead her down the hall. Away from the others Adrienne caught a strange scent from Zach. It smelled like alcohol, but the only thing that Zach had been drinking that night was the punch. Adrienne laughed inwardly at the thought of someone spiking the fruity drink. She guessed that it wouldn’t be long until most of the student body would be happier than usual.

Adrienne spied a small veranda through a few of the French doors. She tugged on Zach’s hand and pulled him it. The air felt cool against her skin and she breathed it in deeply. Her hand slipped from Zach’s momentarily as she leaned against one of the pillars. “Mmmm, this feels nice,” she said as she held her hand out to Zach, a silent invitation for him to join her, or at least come closer to her.

Whatever it was, Adrienne still received a lot of attention. It had not gone unnoticed to Zach that Adrienne had managed to snag one of the princess titles while her friend, the one whom Starbuck constantly referred to as a ‘babe’ all the time, somehow didn’t make the ranks of royalty up on the stage. Something was to be said about that. Maybe Adrienne didn’t see herself as popular, but she was from Zach’s point of view. The amount of people in her life and concerned with her life astounded him sometimes.

She may have even been the reason why he suddenly found himself on the receiving end of more glances than he was used to having directed at him. Of course, there were those people who weren’t making it any easier by spreading around stuff about him and Adrienne. The eyes made him uneasy. As much as he appreciated some of the things her friends did for her, he felt like a spotlight was aimed straight on them. Unraveling as it was, Zach tried his best to keep things just between her and him. As it should be.

Not having been tipsy before and therefore being completely unfamiliar with the feeling, nor recalling the punch tasting funny to him, Zach was indeed mildly intoxicated and yet entirely oblivious to it. Adrienne sensed the right aroma off of him when she thought of alcohol, but the real question was whether or not she would mention it to him.

Zach thought she was being cute, but at the same time he didn’t take anything that Adrienne said lightly. Honesty tended to come to the forefront with her, and he recognized that from the beginning. While he prided himself on his own honesty, he didn’t always live up to it in the best of ways. He hid things, an old habit that stuck with him throughout the years, and sometimes it wrecked more damage than what it saved. Zach rarely lied, but his heart often carried a tendency to not speak up.

Passing through a set of French doors, Adrienne led Zach onto a modest verandah. He inhaled in the fresh air, although it did little for the haze in his mind. Still, the coolness washed over him and the distinct scent of nature in the air rejuvenated his body, if having little effect on his mind. Adrienne separate from him, leaning against one of pillars, but she held out her hand again.

Zach clasped his hand with hers, coming towards her. His mind briefly debated on what to do until he settled with wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his forehead to hers. Smiling ever so slightly, he rubbed his nose to hers in the same way that she had done countless times to him. He breathed in again, his head tilting to the side. “It smells so nice out here,” spoke Zach contentedly. The scent of nature mixed with Adrienne was perhaps the best smell in the world. Feeling so serene in their new surroundings, he drifted in to kiss her.

Despite the chaos yesterday, his walls were down again. Partly to blame was the alcohol in his system that he hadn’t known he had consumed with the punch. Mostly, though, it was just Adrienne being, well . . . Adrienne.

Popularity never mattered to Adrienne. She was as she had always been, herself, and nothing more. If people liked it then that was their opinion and Adrienne was happy to have another friend. If some hated it, well then they could go on their way and she on hers. There were a couple of people whose opinions Adrienne cared about, and Zach was among that select group.

Adrienne saw the haze in Zach’s eyes when he took her hand into his and she wondered if he even realized that he was under the effects of alcohol. She could smell it so clearly when he was this close and while there wasn’t much in his system it was enough to make him tipsy. She would tell him in a few minutes when she wasn’t so intoxicated with his presence. His arms around her waist and the closeness of his body to hers provided enough warmth against the brisk air. She sighed contentedly and smiled when he rubbed his nose against hers.

“It smells so nice out here,” he said and Adrienne nodded as a soft sound of affirmation left her throat. While Zach caught Adrienne’s scent mixed in with the fresh outdoors, Adrienne caught Zach’s deepest scent the one that lingered beneath the clothes and the soap and whatever cologne or aftershave he wore. It was Zach in his most feral state, it was a scent that was uniquely his and in Adrienne’s subconscious mind (the part that was accessible to her beast) it was the scent that had begun to be registered as her alpha-male.

A smile spread across her lips when he closed the distance between them. His lips grazed against hers for a moment before Adrienne’s lips parted to accept his kiss. Soft and sweet, Adrienne immediately melted into the embrace as her hands moved up his arms to clasp around his neck. She whimpered softly into Zach’s mouth and pulled him closer. He tasted like fruit punch and liquor and it would have made her giggle were it not for the fact that she was getting drunk from Zach's kiss and quite enjoying her inebriation.

Zach didn’t wear aftershave. He rarely had to shave, anyway. The skin of his face was usually smooth and free of hair without him having to shave to make it that way. He wore cologne, although he didn’t always put it on everyday unless he felt like it. Lately, he’d been wearing it more often and that was probably because of Adrienne.

Out of all the words often associated with Zach, feral wasn’t one of them. Zach knew there was something like that in everyone, though. It would have been a lie for him to say he didn’t acknowledge it or wasn’t aware of it. Unlike Adrienne, he was much further removed from that part of himself. She had a stronger connection with her primal side because she was a werewolf, but Zach only connected with his on rare occasions when his emotions managed to overrule his ability to reason.

. . . Her alpha-male? If Zach heard this, there was no telling how he would react to such information. Not like Adrienne even knew what was going on in her subconscious mind, though, so their situation had just extended itself into even more complicated territory than before. Especially considering Zach wasn’t entirely his usual restrained self at the moment. As much as he held himself back when he was sober, being even slightly tipsy gave him an opening to express things he normally never would convey through actions or words to another person.

Of course it was soft and sweet at first, but Zach continued to kiss her without a pause. The gentle motions veered into something more concrete when his hand found a place along her jaw and he deepened the kiss. This time it would land on Adrienne to stop it, not Zach. Especially when his head shifted to the side, his other hand slipping behind her neck and the one on her jaw falling to her side and down her lower back.

Thankfully, everyone else was inside. Even an intoxicated Zach knew not to do things like this in public in front of other people.

Adrienne loved the way Zach smelled, with or without cologne. It was a scent she associated with happiness and fun and every good thing she could think of. It calmed the storm in her soul that she had felt ever since she was introduced to her life as a werewolf. It was getting better as she got used to it, but whenever Zach was around she felt more like herself than at any other time.

And perhaps Zach wasn't feral, but there was a deeper animal instinct that existed within each person and that was the scent that Adrienne's inner beast caught so easily. It was the beast and its keen sense of smell that drove Adrienne to Simon in the beginning; but this time Adrienne was leading it to Zach. SHE wanted to be with him for reasons all her own and not because the wolf urged her to want him. And while the rank of alpha-male may seem odd to some, to Adrienne's subconscious mind (or to any wolf's) it meant that this was the man she was most comfortable around, the one she trusted herself to, and the one she wanted to be with always. He had gained her respect and was now working his way to gaining her heart.

And considering the way Adrienne responded to the deepened kiss it would seem that he was on the right path to her heart. She accepted it eagerly as one of her hands held onto the back of his neck more firmly, pulling him close. Her body shivered under his touched as she longed for more and when his hand reached her lower back she instinctively pressed closer to him.

After a few moments Adrienne shifted her head to the other side and moaned into Zach's mouth before she pulled back slowly. As much as she was enjoying the kiss she didn't want to get too caught up in it to the point of not being able to stop. They were still at the dance with their friends and it wouldn't do any good to get caught making out in public.

She smiled at him as her forehead pressed against his. Her hands were holding onto his neck gently. "Mmmm... that was wonderful." She said in a whisper and with a content sigh.

He whimpered despondently in the back of his throat at her withdrawal. Her forehead pressed to his, though, at a tilted angle, which prevented him from coming forward to kiss her again without some effort of movement. Effort left him for the moment. His face fell to her shoulder instead, resting there in a sort of defeated position. After a moment, an idea came to him. A grin spread across his face as he lifted his head just enough to blow a small stream of ticklish air onto her neck.

Laughing at her reaction, he stepped backwards and took her by both hands to lead her onto the veranda. Echoes of the music within reached them from here, but it was still far enough away that it couldn’t be heard as clearly. Whatever words being sung were nothing more than muffles and only the rhythm of the tune, though even that was faint, reached Zach’s ears. It might not have been the same for Adrienne. She probably heard it all in crisper quality than Zach.

Not to mention, the whole tipsy thing kind of made a lot of things less discernible.

Regardless of their lack of music, he took a hold of Adrienne in the usual dancing position that they had practiced in and danced in for a few times earlier while inside. Zach preferred it out here. No people to interrupt the quiet, just him and Adrienne with each other’s company. A soft wind blew, carrying with it the smell of their natural surroundings. Blissful, like home, and he closed his eyes. Even now, his feet and his balance remained steady — a testament that he wasn’t that far gone just because he had a little alcohol in his system.

“My mother,” he began quietly, “used to tell me everything is alive and breathing . . . and home is wherever you felt the need to stop, take in a deep breath with . . . the world around you, and close your eyes as the feeling of . . . serenity . . . came over you.” His hand left her waist, coming up to twirl an idle finger around a lock of Adrienne’s hair. Zach inhaled deeply as he nuzzled her hair, laying his head to her shoulder a moment later.

Tomorrow, he would blame it on the alcohol.

Adrienne giggled when Zach blew air onto her neck. It really did tickle and goosebumps ran down her arm in response. She pressed her cheek against his head as he lay on her shoulder and smiled softly. She would have been more than happy to stay in that position with him for the rest of the night. As much as she was enjoying the company of her friends who were all still inside, it was this moment that she was sharing with Zach that she would cherish the most.

Adrienne had heard the music as well and had wanted to ask Zach to dance with her out there, but she also realized that not all guys were into the whole ‘dancing in a romantic setting’ scenario. So she had kept her mouth shut and was just enjoying her time with her date. Needless to say, Adrienne was quite surprised when Zach led her onto the veranda and began to dance with her.

She couldn’t have asked for a more perfect setting. It was just her and Zach, off in their own world, dancing without the interruption of people bumping into them or other couples talking or anything. The natural scent of their surroundings only leant to the blissful atmosphere and Adrienne found herself gulping at the realization that this was somebody that she could truly fall for in every sense of the word. She almost felt as if she was falling now but she tried so hard to stay grounded despite every emotion that ran through her body.

Adrienne listened to him talk and felt herself shiver when he reached up to curl her hair around his finger. Her breath caught in her chest when he took a deep breath and nuzzled her hair before he settled against her shoulder. She found herself mimicking the words of Zach’s mother when she too took in a deep breath and closed her eyes. And she felt it, the moment of serenity that washed over her like a gentle breeze. She couldn’t help but put her head on his shoulder, her face close to his neck. She was falling all right and god if it wasn’t scary and exhilarating all at the same time.

“Your mother was right,” she said finally against his neck before she leaned in to plant a soft kiss upon it. She smiled softly and repeated the gesture once more before she just laid her head there quietly.

For once, uneasiness didn’t ring through every nerve in his body. His mind didn’t categorize this as a ‘dancing in a romantic setting’ scenario because he preferred to shy away from the crowds, anyway. Maybe it was his singularity that made it such an easy way to label most of his actions as romantic. Zach viewed them as simply just himself, his preference to be one-on-one with someone instead of surrounded by a lot of people.

It wasn’t his intention to come off as a certain way to her. In fact, his original desire to bring her out here had nothing to do with being romantic and had everything to do with the prospect of making out with her. When that hadn’t exactly lasted, he didn’t push it. Other guys would have, but it was enough for him to just to have that contact with her, no matter how big or small. Perhaps that was the saving point in his character. Instead, Zach chose to make their escapade out here enjoyable by ushering her to dance with him.

As long as he was around her tonight, he was happy. The potential of Adrienne being the home that his mother spoke of every person seeking in their lives lingered as an all too real possibility beneath the surface. They were young, but that just would’ve meant they were lucky, wouldn’t it? It also could have meant they were in for a world of pain if they were wrong.

Wrong or right, though, were things you made yourself. At least in Zach’s eyes. There was no such thing as a pre-made destiny, just the destiny you made for yourself. It meant they would have to work for it, if they wanted something together. It wasn’t either going to work out or fail because it was meant to do one of those things. It would turn out the way they made it turn out. If they gave up, it was their failure. If they persevered, it was theirs to keep.

My mother was right about a lot of things, Zach thought. “Mmhmm,” he responded softly out loud to her. Adrienne’s kiss tickled his neck. An amused huff left him as he grinned and danced with her on the verandah.
