Ralph & Chris: Say Hello to Strangetown
Who: Ralph and Open
When: Evening of January 14, 2008
Where: Medical Pavilion
What: Ralph wakes up in strangetown.

Memories were problematic things when fantasy and reality dissolved together. Seeing as they were doing just that for Ralph, he had a problem coming on. Madness dwelt in his head for years, but the delirium became stronger as the food supply steadily became lower. He imagined death was something like this madness, the slow withering of a body eating itself alive because it wasn’t receiving nutrition any other way. Cannibalism had been a good option. Even the basest cells in the body were cannibals eating each other alive to save the colony in an effort of survival. As Ralph stared at the dead bodies in hunger, his stomach churned in disgust because he saw them rotting inside out in spite of the freshness from their recent deaths. Dead bodies were good for a lot of things but a meal wasn’t one of them.

Ralph opened his eyes but shut them, covered them using his bandaged hands. The last memory he recollected before waking up below a white light was falling down to the ground as he fainted mid-walk. The bright light around him meant an impending explosion. Facing explosions became a common occurrence on the outside.

“Duck!” shouted Ralph. “Take cover!”

His body rolled in effort to take cover but collided against rails. Ralph looked out as his hands gripped bed railing. He stared at a neat wall and counters covered in cotton swabs, sterile bandages, and alcohol bottles. The last of his group, a Bulgarian woman possessing a limp arm and missing three teeth, died a few days ago and left him alone in the unreal terrain. How did he forget? Starvation was a funny thing. The mind was playing tricks on him.

Where am I? thought Ralph.

The medical pavilion was a place that Chris frequented from time to time to get blood for Hayate, and to visit Dr. Smith. When she did that though he would convince her to stick around to help out with some of the patients. Chris didn't mind for the most part since it was pretty easy work; plus, Dr. Smith always gave her candy for her time. It was a nice incentive.

Chris entered the room of the pavilion's newest patient; someone the recent scouting party had found on the verge of death. Chris remembered clearly what it was like traveling in the world when she and her brother thought it was safe. They had packed enough provisions for them both, and they didn't worry about starvation because they had been found by a larger group of survivors.

She turned on the light in the room so she wouldn't run into anything while she was cleaning up like Dr. Smith had asked, and had taken a few steps inside when the patient yelled out loud.

"Duck! Take Cover," he had shouted, and Chris did just that. She fell to her knees, and used the clipboard she was holding in her hand as temporary cover above her head. She had no idea what the man had seen, but apparently it was something bad enough that he felt the need to warn her. Chris remained on the floor for several minutes before she dared to look up at her surroundings.

"Is it gone," she asked out loud. She stood up to her full height (which wasn't that much at all), and looked around the empty room. Her eyes fell upon the man who was gripping tightly onto the railings of his bed, and she walked over toward him slowly. "What did you see," she asked as she rounded the bed to face him. "Are you all right?"

The new surroundings stunned Ralph into silence after miles and months of walking added up to forests, grassland, empty parks, and abandoned towns. Wherever he was this time, it was in one piece and cleaned to a sparkling shine. His eyes focused on a single bottle of rubbing alcohol and endeavored to read the label apart from the distance between him and it. Ralph’s eyesight was good, but it wasn’t good enough for that.

Someone’s waist and a clipboard displaced the item from his vision. The white morphed into blurry, bright colors, and Ralph rubbed his eyes using his bent wrist. He raised his head to get a better view of the girl, unassuming as far as he could tell from her appearance. Ralph relaxed, sat back in the hospice bed. As long as the people didn’t plan on performing experiments on him calmness was easy to maintain.

“Where am I?” Ralph asked the girl.

The soreness of his head leant to one of his bandaged hands pressing against it. He had a strange feeling of amnesia erasing some of his memories over the last month. Ralph looked at her again, squinted his eyes. Who is she?

“Who are you?” he asked out loud. He glanced about the room. “Do you work here?”

The man didn't answer her questions, but from the looks of it he seemed to be completely out of it. Chris imagined it wasn't easy surviving out there for as long as he had; Dr. Smith said that this guy was found almost starving to death, and Chris knew that wasn't a good thing. She looked at him curiously when he spoke, and offered up a smile.

"You're in the Medical Pavilion," Chris answered as she held onto her clipboard. "In Elysium. A scouting party found you," she added to her answer. Chris figured the man had no idea where he was in the world, and she wanted him to feel comfortable. Dr. Smith did ask her to make sure the patients were doing all right, and she wasn't going to fail at that task.

Chris moved over toward one of the tables to pour the patient some water. She returned to his bedside, and handed him the paper cup just as he asked her another question. "I work here today," she answered cheerfully. "Oh, I'm Chris. Who are you?"

“Ralph,” he answered weakly, accepting the cup. He closed his eyes as he drank the water. It quenched his parched throat and tasted like the best thing he ever had to drink in his entire life. They must have fed him nutrients through intravenous therapy while he was unconscious. Lost inside of his own mind, he looked down at his arm and saw the tube. Liquid ran through it into his arm.

Out of it probably didn’t cover Ralph’s condition. He was more than out of it; he was still caught halfway between the fringes of a dream land and the actual place of reality. Ralph had no idea where Elysium was or what it was. A country, a city, a village in the middle of nowhere? He was full of questions but he had nowhere to direct them. Forgetting about the girl briefly, he tried to recall everything last stored in his memory about his position in Europe.

He drank more of the water and noticed the girl again. She was still there lingering beside his bed.

“Thank you,” he said, half-hearted. He lied down and rested his head to the side, focused his attention on her. She was a pretty girl. There was something very angelic about her.

“Where is Elysium? What is it?” He knew he asked her a lot of questions so far, but for a man coming out of unconsciousness because of starvation he held his tongue well. “How long have I been asleep?”

He wanted to hear her talk. After asking a few questions his throat was sore and the scratchy ache brought him to faintly grimace.

If Chris was lingering by Ralph's bed it was because she wanted to be there if he needed more water, or anything else really. A part of her wanted to call Dr. Smith into the room to get him to check up on the guy, but then again he probably wasn't ready to be poked and prodded by a doctor no matter how nice of a doctor Dr. Smith was.

And so she watched him from the side of the bed as he drank the water she had poured for him. There were probably other things she could do in the room like clean or something, but she was more interested in being helpful to the patient. She noticed that he drank the water like he was savoring it, and if anything she could get him more when he needed it, and probably some food later on.

"You're welcome," she said in reply as she held out her hand to take the cup for a refill. Chris was happy to help, and more than happy to answer his questions. At least it meant the guy was feeling better, and that was a good thing. Maybe if Dr. Smith thought she was doing a good job he'd give her more candy than usual.

"Elysium is a haven," she said. "You know a place that's safe from the war, and the virus, and stuff." Chris pulled a rolling stool closer from underneath one of the tables, and used it to sit next to Ralph's bed. "From what I know we're in the Balkan Mountain Range somewhere. And I have no idea how long you've been asleep only that you've been here for a couple of days. At least you're awake now." She smiled at him in an attempt to make him feel better.

There were a few moments of silence, and the girl began to fidget at the hem of her shirt. She was thinking of something to say to the poor guy, but she wasn't sure what she could talk about with him. She didn't know anything about Ralph, and she didn't want to pry into his personal life so soon after he had just woken up.

"So..." she said, dragging out the word. Only one thing came to mind, and that was because she was feeling it, too. "I bet you're hungry!" She practically jumped to her feet clipboard at the ready. "If you tell me what you want I can go get it for you. Elysium has every kind of food so you can get whatever you want!"

Haven was a new concept for Ralph, though he knew places like that existed somewhere. The description she gave called to mind the image of a bomb shelter, a really big one. Ralph hoped it was more akin to a small village in between mountains, closed off from the rest of the world. It was nice to know there was a place untouched by the war. He lived through the whole thing and how he managed to survive was a mystery even to him.

Ralph said nothing out loud until he realized he wanted more water. He looked at the girl, held out the cup to her. “Water,” he quietly said. His mouth was as dry as the desert.

It was a lot to take in to hear they had everything imaginable. His diet lacked solid food long enough for him to hardly detect the hunger pains anymore. Ralph wracked his mind for what he missed the most and came up saying the biggest cliché.

“Steak. I haven’t had steak in … I can’t remember how long.”

She didn't mean to make Elysium sound like a huge bomb shelter. The fact was that the haven was much more like a hidden paradise nestled in between the mountains. But Chris didn't think to describe the haven in that way. To her it was a place that was safe from all the bad stuff that had happened in the world, and that was the most important thing to tell Ralph.

Chris took the empty cup from Ralph, and refilled it with more water. She returned to his side, and handed him the cup. "You must be really thirsty," she said not realizing just how much of an understatement that was. Still she offered him a bright smile, and even laughed a little when he mentioned steak. She put a hand on her waist, and shook her head.

"What is it with men and steak," she asked, still laughing. "I swear it's like some sort of code. You're not a real man unless you eat steak," she added. "But no worries, I'll go and order you one. How do you like it cooked?"

He drank the water until the cup was empty again. The refreshment tasted cool. It soothed his throat, and he held out the cup a second time in a silent invitation for her to pour more.

“I am,” said Ralph. He stared at her with a disconcerting look in his eyes. She was a living person, a stark contrast to the dead bodies piled up around him just days ago. He thought about how she might look if she was one of them, a lifeless comrade on the road. He banished the thought and looked down in shame. Self-control was a good talent for him to learn. Ralph had very little of it.

The ghost of a smile appeared on his face. “Men like steak. Red meat is good for you,” Ralph answered. He didn’t know how true that statement was. It just felt like something good to say. Speech wasn’t so hard when he had some water down the pipe.

“Medium-rare.”

Chris watched in semi-amazement as the man continued to gulp down glass after glass of water. From what she knew the man had been starving on the outside, and most likely dehydrated. And though he had been given a lot of fluids intravenously it was a poor substitute to pure, clean water.

She poured him more water, completely unaware of what Ralph had been thinking. It was probably better that way since she would have frowned at the mental image of herself... dead. She had seen enough dead bodies to last a lifetime, and she had no intention of dying anytime soon.

Chris's lips curled into an amused grin at his words, and she rolled her eyes playfully. "Oh I'm so sure," she said. "That's why doctors are always saying that too much red meat is bad for you." She giggled a little then, and let out a soft breath. "But you're entitled every once in a while. So," she said, elongating the word. "I'm gonna go, and grab you some food. You can probably take a shower or something. Maybe shave a little?" She smiled again. "And I'll be back with your food."

The girl left Ralph by himself then, and hurried to get the man his food. She imagined that he was really hungry, and she didn't want to keep him waiting for very long.

The room fell quiet when she left it. He liked it better when her voice spoke to fill the silence. He recently heard a lot of silence. Ralph looked to the window covered in blinds and wished they weren’t there. He wanted to see what the outside world looked like here. Her suggestions rang clear in his mind. Ralph removed his covers and carefully placed his feet on the ground. The tiles were cold to the touch and he flinched.

He pressed his feet down and stood up. He didn’t care to shower or shave so soon after waking. Ralph wanted to explore his new surroundings. His curiosity led him to the counter at first. He plucked up various tools and studied them before turning his attention to the opposite side of the room.

After his hands passed over most of the countertops and walls, Ralph aimed his gaze at the window. He opened the blinds, but nothing was visible beyond the room. It was too dark. Ralph crossed the room to turn out the light and looked back to the window. Slowly he approached it and placed his hand against cool glass.

His eyes stared in wonder at the nighttime world. Starlight sprinkled the grass, so much grass. And trees. Lush, thriving trees. No rotted pieces of wood. It was beautiful.

Chris didn't know how long she had been gone, but as soon as she received Ralph's order from the restaurant the girl ran all the way back toward the Medical Pavilion. It wasn't a short run by any means, but she ran as fast as her legs would take her. Chris wasn't as athletic as her brother, but that didn’t mean that she was going to keel over just by running a mile or two. The food was still warm when Chris returned to Ralph’s room. Her chest was heaving when she stumbled in, and she put the container of food on a nearby table.

“I came back… as fast as… I could,” she said in between her heavy breaths. Her hands were on her hips, and there was a light sheen of sweat on her brow. Ralph was standing by the window in the darkened room, staring out in to the evening at the expanse that was Helicharis. It wasn’t an impressive as the wide fields that surrounded the small city, but it was still beautiful.

A few moments passed before Chris moved back toward the bag of food she had brought with her. There was steak in one container, and some mashed potatoes (with gravy) in another. Another small square container had some salad, and in the last was a slice of cake. Chris figured that Ralph would enjoy an entire meal a lot more than just a single piece of steak. “You didn’t get dressed,” she said as she laid everything out for him. “Well, I guess it’s okay,” she joked with him. “You should probably eat your food first anyway,” she said. “Showers can wait.”

Ralph gazed out the window after she stumbled back inside his room. Though the peacefulness captivated his mind his stomach growled in the presence of food. Liquid vitamins couldn’t replace solid food and real water. Ralph turned on his heels, walked to his bed and sat down. He sighed in a big heap. Mouthwatering food was a fork away.

He lifted his eyes and surveyed the girl whose running made her look alive. Exertion made somebody look either alive or dead. She looked alive by means of rosy skin and a sheen of sweat.

“You look tired,” said Ralph as he watched her. Picking up his utensils, he ate the food. It tasted better than anything he committed to his memory before. Ralph liked her company and thought of a way to keep her around longer. Conversation wasn’t so bad if he wasn’t the one talking.

“Tell me a bit about yourself.”

Ralph cut into his steak to check the pinkness of the meat. When it looked the way he asked for it he cut off a huge chunk and ate it.

Ralph looked up at her and he smiled.

"Of course I'm tired," Chris said with a laugh. Her chest was still heaving, but it was less than before. If there was anything youth afforded a person it was the ability to regain their breath quickly. "I ran my butt all the way over here so you wouldn't have to wait long. How's that for service?" She placed her hands on her hips triumphantly, but they fell shortly thereafter when she moved to sit on a stool.

She watched Ralph take the first few bites of his food, but turned away since she felt bad for staring at him. She never did like watching people while they ate. The girl let out a soft sigh, and tapped her toes as quietly as she could against the floor. She looked up only when Ralph asked her a question, and raised both of her eyebrows in thought.

"Well... I'm originally from New York. I have a twin brother - his name's Charlie. He's a therianthrope, but I'm just normal." She rolled her eyes a bit, and sighed a bit more dejectedly. Chris hated being normal especially since she lived in Supernatural-ville. "Um, I don't know what else... to tell you..." she said with a shy smile. "I guess you can ask me questions. I'll answer anything." She laughed a bit, and then wheeled her chair to the foot of Ralph's bed to rest her arms on the mattress. "Almost anything," she joked as she waited for a question.

Ralph’s eyes fell to her breasts as she heaved in breaths. He looked down again at his food. He shouldn’t have done that. She looked young. Ralph cut more of his steak and ate another piece. It tasted like heaven, though he hadn’t tasted heaven before. He wondered if it tasted like medium-rare steak.

Ralph raised his eyes. He looked thoughtful. He never heard of a therianthrope before. It sounded almost like a medical condition. He would’ve heard of it.

“What’s that?” he asked. His curiosity couldn’t be stopped.

New York was far from his home. California and New York, he thought. Opposite ends of the same country. He ate his steak as she ran out of things to say. She told him two things and she ran out of stories. Ralph came close to a frown but hindered it. Chris had a preposition of questions though her stories ran out. Ralph liked asking questions. What he didn’t like was people asking them of him.

Have you ever … Ralph hushed the thought. That was wildly inappropriate.

“What was your home like?”

Chris didn't even notice Ralph eying her chest, and even if she did she wouldn't think anything of the action. She was a smart girl, but there were a lot of things that went over her head. She would have assumed that the stare was the result of her heavy breathing, and not because her heavy breathing drew attention to her well-developed breasts. Then again the only time naughty thoughts ever entered her head was when she was with Hayate, and that had been more often than not.

It was rare for Chris to not have anything to say, but once the girl got started on a subject it was hard to stop her. As she became more comfortable with Ralph's company the more she would be willing to talk, and talk, and talk.

"A therianthrope?" Chris thought it was weird that he didn't know what a therianthrope was, but she decided to tell him anyway. "Therianthropes are animal shape-shifters. My brother turns into a pronghorn," she shared. "It's the coolest thing ever, and I wish I could do it, but I can't." She shrugged, and sigh. "I mean it's not like it's super important to me, but sometimes I feel left out, y'know? Twins are supposed to share everything, right? But I so didn't get that power, and it totally sucks." Chris pouted a little, a cute little protrusion of her lower lip that lasted all but three seconds.

"I remember the first time he changed. Oh my gosh it was so scary, but so cool at the same time! We were out exploring by our house one day, and a wolf started chasing after us, and oh my gosh we ran so fast. And then I was like all by myself, and had to run up a tree to get away from the wolf! And then there was this deer that was running around all crazy like, and it chased the wolf away." She didn't often share stories of her childhood with people, but she did with Ralph for some reason.

She sighed, and pushed a few strands of hair away from her face as she spoke. "Home was good," she said. "It was normal except that Mom and Dad were super genius geneticists, and they were always stressing how important science and biology was. I liked it, but my fav subjects were English, and art. We got separated when the virus hit. Charlie and I went to Switzerland, but Mom and Dad stayed to help find a cure of something." She shrugged again. Her parents were a sensitive subject, and so she decided to change the topic. "But, I do have my dog Wolverine with me. And I have my favorite books, and movies on my laptop."

Chris didn't feel right asking the man questions while he ate, and so she was quite for a moment or two before she started talking again. "So I'm thinking about going to the lagoon tomorrow. It's so nice there, and the water's warm all year round. Probably gonna rent a boat, and head out there. Do you like to swim?" So it was a question, but it was the only way Chris knew to keep the conversation going. There had to be give and take otherwise she would just talk the poor man into another state of unconscious with her incessant rambling.

Animal shape-shifters? Ralph never heard of animal-shapeshifters. He didn’t know they were real. It was news to him. Ralph handled it calmly. If necromancy was real shape-shifting people weren’t far off the trajectory of possibilities. Inquisitively, he tilted his head as he learned of her twin. She had a twin. A male twin. Ralph tried to imagine what he looked like.

Her use of language said she was young. How young Ralph didn’t know and he didn’t ask. Her age wasn’t any of his business. He smiled at her story about the wolf. When her parents came up Ralph’s senses perked up. Geneticists? He almost came close to contributing to the conversation. Ralph thought science and biology were important too. He kept the thought in his head when he learned of her separation from her parents.

Ralph thought they were dead. Maybe he made it out alive, but a feeling told him he was the exception.

“I’m sorry,” said Ralph. He took a break from eating. “That must be hard.” Living without your parents, he thought quietly. Getting by without them. It wasn’t hard for Ralph, but not all parents were like his.

Ralph assumed her question was an invitation. It caught him off guard. He didn’t think they’d release him for a boat trip.

“I…don’t swim a lot.” Ralph looked up. “But I like boats.”

There were a lot of things that Chris hadn't heard about until she arrived in Elysium, but after being around it for so long she assumed that every person she met was familiar with all the types of praeternaturals in the world. There were times when she forgot that some people, like Ralph, had just arrived in the haven, and had never been exposed to the other creatures in the world.

If there was anything about Chris that revealed her age it was the way she spoke. It was that of a young teenager despite the fact that she looked a little bit older than her real age. She hadn't thought at all about changing that aspect of her, but given more time with Hayate the young girl would no doubt begin to mature in many different ways. She looked up at Ralph when he apologized, and smiled.

"It's not so bad," she said with a shrug. "I still have Charlie, and we traveled all the way from Switzerland on our own. Well... we met up with a group about halfway here, but we were all right. I made Charlie carry me most of the way." She laughed a bit, and then ran her fingers through her hair. Ralph was easy to talk with, and Chris liked that. She liked making friends despite age differences, and she hoped that was the same for Ralph.

"Swimming is lots of fun," she said. "I love it. Boating's fun, too. My parents liked to sail, and they taught me and Charlie so I'm pretty good. Maybe when you're feeling better we can go. Only if you want to, that is."

Ralph smiled at her. It amazed him to hear how she and her brother made it from Switzerland to this place on their own. Ralph had help the whole way. He still nearly died. The travel hadn’t been a vacation. The company hadn’t been the best. They ran out of food. They lost their way. He wound up stranded in a desert wasteland with just the clothes on his back.

“That’s good,” said Ralph. She had her brother. She had somebody. Ralph had no one. Friends weren’t an easy commodity for Ralph to find. Especially not young and pretty ones.

Holding onto friends was harder than finding them. Ralph met passing acquaintances. People he knew a short time before he lost touch. The problem for Ralph was his ability. Necromancy wasn’t a power he could disclose. Could any power be disclosed? They were open invitations for judgment and punishment. For pain.

Ralph never opened himself to it. The risk was always too great.

“It…sounds great.” Ralph didn’t know what else to say. He never swam because he never thought about it. Was it really fun? “I mean…it’d be nice. When I’m out of this hospital bed. I don’t know when they’ll release me.”

Ralph took a bite out of his steak. He looked up, stared at her. Girls like her never talked to him. Why was she talking to him? He was older than her. Boring. Not handsome. Ralph ate more of his food and the thoughts ran rampant.

Chris was pretty lucky when it came to her survival. She had her brother, and they didn't have the misfortune of running into anything too terrible on their trip to the haven. Compared to what others had gone through Chris and Charlie were both relatively unscathed. Any trauma she had encountered came after she arrived in Elysium.

The young girl was friendly with most people she had met, and Ralph just happened to be one of them. Chris liked making friends, and Ralph was a nice enough guy in her eyes for her to consider that of him. She was young, and open to new ideas, and she was very accepting of all the different praeternaturals she had met. The only exceptions came when those people were jerks, and she had only met a handful of those so far.

"You've never been swimming," she asked as she leaned forward on his bed. "Then we definitely have to go when you get out of here," she said with enough enthusiasm for the both of them. "The lagoon is perfect all year round. I think you'll like it even if you decide to just stay on the boat." She thought back fondly on her trip with Hayate, and she figured that Ralph would enjoy a trip like that as well.

She moved from the foot of his bed over to his side, and picked up a napkin. "You've got something right there," she said as she moved her hand forward slowly to wipe it from the man's cheek. "May I?" Chris knew some people didn't like their personal bubble being breached so she was careful not to get too close to Ralph without his permission. Chris was determined to make a good impression not just on Ralph, but on Zane, too. If she did well she could work at the pavilion more often, and get more candy as a reward. It was a childish want, but it was enough to bring a smile to Chris's face.

“I’ve been swimming…” Ralph corrected her hesitantly because he had. The difference was he never took it up as a pastime. Swimming was pointless. Unless it was done for exercise, then he saw the benefits of it. “I just haven’t made a habit out of it.”

Chris was adamant about getting him out of the hospital. Ralph narrowed his eyes, his mouth twisted funny at the corner. He was confused. The more he thought about it the crazier his reasons got. Did she… did she like him? Ralph quickly cut another piece off his steak and popped it into his mouth. He chewed and tried to ignore the foreign feeling of pride blossoming in his belly.

“Okay.” He agreed with an equal measurement of enthusiasm. For the first time since they started talking he displayed some kind of emotion.

Ralph was content to return to his steak. Chris closed in on him. She went from the foot of the bed to the side. Her hand holding the napkin reached out to his face and he froze. His eyes met with hers. Ralph knew he should say something. His voice box was broken. Chris was close, closer than he was used to. His eyes flicked to the napkin then back to her eyes.

He simply nodded to consent because he couldn’t find a way to speak.

Chris was friendly with most people, and the only problem that ever came from that was the mistake of assuming her friendliness as flirtation. The girl liked Ralph well enough considering they had just met, but her feelings didn't go beyond that. She thought he was kinda cute even though he was all scruffy, but her thoughts did not go beyond that. Chris had no idea, however, that the idea had planted itself in Ralph's mind.

"Great! Then we'll have to go once you're better," she said, happy to see that Ralph was at least open to the idea. Her enthusiasm probably only added to Ralph's suspicion that she liked him, as did her next action to wipe his face clean. Chris was gentle in her movement, but still quite thorough. She smiled at him, and she was completely oblivious to the fact that Ralph could not even speak because of her close proximity.

"There, all better," she said once she was done. The girl looked over her shoulder out the window. She couldn't see anything when it was dark outside, but it was the darkness that told her it was time to go home. She grinned a little sadly at Ralph, and picked up her clipboard to hold it close to her chest. "So, I think I better go," she said finally. "It's dark, and I have to walk home by myself," she explained. "But I promise I'll come back tomorrow to visit, okay?" Ralph was a really nice guy, and though volunteering had its benefits Chris would have visited the man without any sort of reward. Chris moved to the door of the room, and stopped to wave at her new friend before she left him completely.

Ralph studied her face up close. Her hand used the napkin to clean him like a mother (or a lover) would. He responded through an ache in his chest. Ralph never had a deep connection with somebody. His parents had been strangers to him. More foreign to him than this girl at his bedside. She made him smile, however small. Ralph knew he liked her company.

He hoped to see her again.

Ralph quirked an eyebrow. The first playful deed since he met her. “Come get me when I do?” If she showed up he’d be happy. If she didn’t it wouldn’t be the end of the world. She was a cute girl. A nice girl. He’d get over it.

Ralph was sad to see her go. “Be careful,” he said and he hoped she would. “Maybe you should ask someone to walk with you. If it’s dark outside.” He wasn’t suggesting him just pointing out she should bring somebody along. Usually things weren’t safe for a pretty girl like her.

Nights were especially unsafe.

He waved at her when she left and returned his attention to his food. He had a meal to finish.
