Adrienne's eyes opened suddenly when she heard muffled voices from beyond Alicia's door. Her eyes scanned the room, and she pushed herself to a sitting position. She recognized both Zach and Kelsey's voices, and her heightened senses allowed her hear their words clearly. She heard the soft click of Zach's door closing, and their feet moving down the hallway to the stairs. She slid out of the bed slowly, careful to not wake Alicia as she left the room.
She knew that eavesdropping was wrong, but there was something that was pulling her downstairs that night. There was a foreboding scent in the air, one filled with aggression, dominance, and anger. Adrienne was still getting used to smelling out emotions, but she had to admit that it was a skill that came in handy from time to time. Still, the strong pheromones that filled the air tonight made Adrienne's heart beat a little faster than usual.
The girl was quiet as she made her way toward the study. Already she heard the voices behind the closed door, and already she knew that it wasn't good. Kelsey's voice was furious, and he was yelling at Zach about her.
"I’m wrong about wanting to protect my family? About wanting to protect my son from making the biggest mistake of his life? For getting involved with a werewolf—"
"Don’t talk about Adrienne like that!"
"SIT DOWN!"
Adrienne found herself sinking to the floor at the same moment of Kelsey's command. She was shaking, and her eyes were welling up with tears. All of her insecurities were coming back again, and she couldn't see herself as anything but a monster.
