Dante and Zach: A confrontation - Part 1
Who: Dante and Zach
When: Friday - December 28, 2007 - Late Afternoon
Where: Near the alchemy labs
What: Dante delivers a threat

Dante had spent far too long in limbo. Doing nothing - saying nothing. It was unlike him, but it was necessary for survival. The facade had to last longer than usual, but the price he paid was losing more of whatever sanity he had left. The last full moon had pushed him to a point he had never been to before - he was riddled with anxiety even after a few days of rest. He needed to do something, and that something involved a particular alchemist.

He had watched him before, but he was never as dedicated as he was this day.

Zach.

The boy was the bane of his existence. He was the only person blocking the path to his destiny, but killing him would have garnered too much attention. Killing him would have pitted Adrienne against him. Adrienne was the goal - she had always been the goal. Fate had brought him to this place, and in turn brought him to her. It was a sign that they belonged together. If only she could see the same thing.

Dante waited for Zach outside the alchemy labs. He would wait all night if he had to, but sooner or later the boy would leave, and when he did he would run straight into Dante.

Zach's mind was riddled with anxieties he didn't fully understand as usual lately as he slipped on his jacket and prepared to leave the alchemy labs. With a last look over the laboratory, he made sure everything was back in its proper place with a quick sweep of his eyes. He knew his grandmother would be pissed with him if it wasn't. Zach sighed and left the lab, shuffling his way towards the front door.

He couldn't pinpoint the reason for his uneasiness, the lost feelings, that came so often to him in the past few weeks. Something in his mind was becoming unraveled. Maybe because he wasn't sure what he was doing with his life or what he was supposed to do. It had been a while since he had had some real good guidance to keep him in line. In so many ways, he was still a child inside. That wasn't going to change overnight and with a handful of more responsibilities, and he knew that much. He wanted to grow up so much, but he hadn't felt as if he had really gotten very far in the last couple of months of his life. It felt like he was stuck in limbo.

When he stepped out of the alchemy labs, he lifted his head and nearly stumbled. He caught the door frame and used it for support to right his feet, eying the man not too far across from him who had decided to block the exit of the labs. Zach knew him. Not personally, but he'd had enough run-ins with the man to remember his face by now.

"Do you mind?" Zach asked, taking a step forward to indicate he was going somewhere. A part of him was creeped out that Dante was even here, standing there like he had been waiting for him to come out of the alchemy labs. Ever since Dante had made Adrienne uncomfortable, Zach wasn't so thankful for that time when Dante helped them out with Simon.

Dante could smell Zach even before the boy pushed open the door. The werewolf was unmoving, watching with stoic eyes as the human almost bumped into him. He was so short up close, barely a man at all. He couldn't see why Adrienne loved him, why she chose to be with him instead of another lycanthrope. The thought brought a sneer to his lips, and he scoffed under his breath.

"I do mind," he said with a venomous glare. How could someone like Zach be his competition? He wasn't - not really. He was sub-par from this distance, and Dante's sense of superiority skyrocketed. An alchemist was nothing compared to a lycanthrope, and Dante almost felt sorry for the boy. Adrienne was obviously not seeing things clearly, and it was his job to clear her vision.

"We need to talk," he said brusquely. Dante grabbed the collar of Zach's jacket, and dragged him to the side of the building for more privacy.

Zach narrowed his brow at Dante’s response. He did mind? What kind of answer was that? Before he could even respond, the larger man took Zach by the collar and dragged him off to the side of the building. Zach was too stunned to do anything at first, not coming to his senses until his back hit the wall and his face scrunched up into a look of repugnance. He grabbed Dante’s hand and tried to yank it away from his collar, glaring at the other man with all of the fury he felt from being pulled around like a damn dog.

He shoved at the other man next, though it wasn’t to much avail. It didn’t mean he was just going to stand around and be treated like this, though. “What the fuck is your problem?” Zach swore aloud, which was his version of let him go, you crazy asshole. The confusion in the younger man’s eyes was as clear as day. He and Dante had nothing to talk about, and he couldn’t imagine for the life of him what Dante thought they needed to talk about. It wasn’t like they were friends, and as far as Zach knew, they hadn’t been enemies either. So, why the hell was Dante grabbing him and slamming him against a wall out of nowhere?

Zach wanted answers, but more importantly, he wanted Dante’s hands off of him.

"YOU'RE MY FUCKIN' PROBLEM YOU LITTLE PIECE OF SHIT!" Dante's venomous words came out like bullets spraying saliva at the boy's face. Dante pushed Zach against the wall even more and came up close to his face. He breathed heavily into his face. "You need to learn your place around here," he said a little more calmly. He stared at Zach intently, and then leaned his head to the side. "You're nothing compared to me. Nothing." He let out a short laugh, and then loosened his grip on Zach. Even if the boy wanted to run away Dante would have no problem catching up with him.

His entire demeanor changed now, and he was even smiling. "Look kid," he said. He placed his hand on the wall next to Zach's head, and leaned in a little. "I'll talk slow so you can understand. Are you ready? Pay attention cause I'll only say this once." He leaned in a little closer, his other hand resting on the other side of his head. "You don't belong with Adrienne, I do. So stay away from her, okay? Break-up with her, stop talking to her - whatever you want, just stay away. Got it?"

For one split second, Zach was actually terrified from Dante’s yelling. He flinched, closing his eyes once he felt the saliva spray from Dante’s mouth onto his face. Instinctively, he wanted to wipe it away, but there were more important things at hand: Like being shoved and held up against the outside of a building by a man twice his size when no one else was around. It wasn’t even the size part that alarmed Zach. Dante was a werewolf. That was far more alarming that how tall he was.

Though there was something right behind him, he pulled away from Dante until his head hit solid wall and turned away just slightly from the other man. Dante was getting far too close for comfort, and the way he spoke down to Zach made the younger man’s blood boil. Who was he to talk to him like that? Zach knew his place around here, and he was doing just fine without Dante’s opinion.

Confusion settled into his head, though. Why was Dante comparing the two of them? What for? His brow burrowed, anger and defiance clear on his face, but he kept his mouth shut for now. He wanted to hear Dante say the real reason of the meaning behind all of this. A scowl appeared on Zach’s face when Dante called him ‘kid,’ but he let the other guy get it out. Apparently, he needed to say it.

It didn’t even take a moment for Zach to react. His eyes grew wide, the incredulous look on his face as plain as day. Zach was, for lack of a better word, flabbergasted. He actually huffed in disbelief. “You’re kidding, right?” he asked. “This is some kind of joke.” Zach laughed and fell slack against the building as he felt all of the tension pouring out of his shoulders. “Nico put you up to this, didn’t he?”

All gratification in his act disappeared when Zach laughed in the face of the situation. He didn't believe him. He even thought this was a big joke. It wasn't a joke, but Dante could make him think it was for a few minutes. He started to laugh with the boy, his face turning into something that was the complete opposite from what it was in the beginning. He was forcing his laughter now, and the hand that was on Zach's chest patted slowly before it gripped tightly. He lifted the boy off the ground, and looked up at him.

"DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A FUCKING JOKE TO YOU!" His face began to contort, turning into something that resembled the monster that he was deep down inside. He was shifting into a wolf right before Zach's eyes — fangs were growing, as was a muzzle. His eyes were turning from green to yellow. A deep growl resonated in his throat. "THIS. IS NOT. A JOKE." He was controlling his shift enough to not go the rest of the way. "You will stay away from Adrienne." His voice was still rumbling, and there was saliva dripping from the corner of his mouth, and from the tips of his fangs.

"Stay away from her," he said again. "She's mine. Got that?"

It wasn’t a joke. That became very clear to Zach when Dante suddenly lifted him off up the ground. His shirt was tight around his neck, restricting his breathing though not cutting it off completely. It didn’t make it any easier. He grabbed at Dante’s arm to try and limit the amount of pressure on his neck. It felt as if his skin was burning, flushing with red at the cheeks as he tried to swallow and calm himself down. Of course, it wasn’t working in the slightest. It was in moments like these that Zach wished he had learned how to fight, or that he was at least something more than an alchemist.

Then, Dante was shifting. Zach went into panic mode. He wasn’t paying attention to how far or fast the man was shifting, just that he was shifting. Zach pushed at the other man, gritting his teeth and trying his hardest to get away. It wasn’t working, though. Dante’s grip was too tight, and Zach was too afraid of his hands accidentally slipping and getting anywhere near Dante’s face. What if the other man bit him and tore his arm off?

Zach didn’t answer him. He couldn’t answer him. Stay away from Adrienne? The man was out of his mind. He was fucking crazy. Zach just wanted to get away; he wasn’t agreeing to anything.

Elijah had been spending more time around the alchemy labs because of Constance. He had been going over Aubert's notes with the alchemist, figuring out all the details for a very important ritual she wished to undergo in the near future. They had become reacquainted over the past few weeks, and Elijah could say that he enjoyed the woman's company immensely. And while he hadn't met her family face-to-face (including her grandson, the next alchemist in her bloodline) he had seen them from afar, and he knew their faces well.

It was the reason alarm filled his senses when he spotted Constance's grandson being held against the side wall of the laboratory by a large man. The boy's feet were dangling, and there was a look of panic drawn across his face. Elijah surged with a protective instinct, one that stemmed from the fact that the boy in trouble was Constance's grandson, her only heir that held the gift of alchemy. He strode forward with determination, and unnatural speed toward the scene.

"Hey ugly," he said. When he got closer he noted the strange features on the man's face. He was a lycanthrope, one that could shift outside the full moon. It was a fact that escalated Zach's already dire situation. Without hesitation Elijah shot a surge of water straight at the attacker's chest. "Playtime's over." Hopefully the strong burst of water was enough to make the man drop the alchemist.

The boy's struggle brought forth a sadistic smile from Dante. He liked it when they struggled since it gave him all the more reason to use brute force against them. The other male werewolf was like that, and it made the kill that much sweeter. Plus, he had been doing it to protect Adrienne from the likes of another potential suitor. Wasn't it odd that Dante still considered himself a suitor even with his psychotic behavior?

His fingers tightened around the material, restricting airflow even more to the helpless alchemist. "Stay away from her, or you'll be—"

Dante was interrupted by someone calling him ugly, and before he had time to say anything he was thrown back by a strong gush of water. He had lost his grip on Zach, too, and was all wet on top of it. A heavy growl came from his throat, and he snapped his head in the direction of the attack. "This isn't any of your business," he snarled. He would have turned his nails into claws until he realized that this man probably witnessed something he shouldn't. Dante pushed himself to his feet, and held out his arms to the side while he looked down his chest. Water dripped down to the frozen snow. Dante wished it could have been blood. "Why don't you leave us alone?" He was annoyed as fuck, but he wasn't going to show it in front of the stranger. What was he anyway? He had water magic whatever he was. Didn't matter none since he was probably weak anyway. Dante thought he could kill the stranger without a problem.

"I need to work something out with my friend," he said again. "So why don't you, and your water tricks move along."

Zach immediately scrambled away from Dante when the man released his grasp. Despite the spray of water that hit him as well, Zach could forgive it without a problem since it got him out of this situation. He was backing away from Dante while facing him, his feet taking him toward Elijah. Zach scowled at the werewolf all the way. “You’re not my friend,” Zach bit out, “and we don’t have anything to work out together, so why don’t you get the fuck out of here?” He made it close to Elijah and stopped walking, pausing there on the slushy ground.

He didn’t know who the stranger was, but he was thankful for the interruption. Even though he was weak against a werewolf and needed help, it didn’t stop Zach from possessing an attitude all the while. He might have been afraid, but he never let his fears show around someone who wanted to see them. In the face of something bigger than him, Zach still maintained his determination and bullheadedness. He could at least say he wasn’t a whiner or a wuss, even if the odds were against him.

Elijah remained unmoving despite Dante's retort, and the obvious aggression the man was exuding at that moment. There weren't many things in the world that intimidated Elijah especially since he had experienced so much. His powers, too, gave him an edge over other praeternaturals. He wasn't the type to shift into his full water form just for the hell of it, but he wouldn't hesitate if there was a need for it. This wasn't one of those moments, though it could all change depending on the stranger's actions.

Zach's slow retreat to his side did not go unnoticed by the elemental. The boy kept up a stern facade, but Elijah knew he was scared. It made him all the more angry, and his stare at Dante turned cold. "You heard the man," Elijah said with an unwaivering tone. "Get the fuck out of here." He didn't feel the need to say anymore since it was pretty clear what he meant, and that he wouldn't tolerate anything less.

There was a low rumbling that started in Dante's chest, and moved until it was right in his throat. His anger was bubbling over, and if he didn't get himself under control he would shift, and all hell would break loose. This fucking bastard didn't know how to mind his own business, and Dante would have to take care of him some other time. As for Zach -

"Hey, no problem," he said as he held his hands up in front of him in a defensive manner. All signs of the wolf were gone, and there was a normal looking guy standing in its place. "Didn't mean to ruffle feathers," he lied. "Just don't forget what I said, ya?" He looked at Zach pointedly, his stare conveying the seriousness of the matter. Zach didn't have to answer for Dante to be satisfied - the lycanthrope took silence as a another form of consent, and agreement. He had little doubt that the boy would follow through.

Dante wiped the water from his face, and then shoved his hands into his pockets. "I'll be seeing you." He spoke his words slowly, and his eyes shone with something sinister. He turned around and walked away from the stranger, and from the alchemist. There was a pleased smile on his face. He was one step closer to Adrienne now, and that was all that mattered to him.

Zach actually breathed a sigh of relief when Dante walked away. He watched until Dante disappeared from sight before turning to face his ‘rescuer.’ He really didn’t want to think of the man in those terms, though. How about a helping hand in an unfair situation? Yeah, Zach could live with that. “Thanks,” he told the stranger as calmly as possible. He was still a little shaken from the encounter with the werewolf. Unlike other people with a strength disadvantage, Zach could appreciate somebody’s help without feeling like a failure.

“I probably should be getting back now,” he said, even though Elijah wouldn’t know what he was talking about. Zach gestured over in the direction of the town cottages. “Home, that is,” he added a little nervously. “But thanks for your help. That guy is a real asshole.” He didn’t think the other man wanted to chit-chat, and after that encounter, Zach didn’t really feel like it himself. The gratitude, however, was real. He started to walk in the direction of town, letting out another heavy exhalation from his lungs. Zach honestly never wanted to see Dante again in his life after that incident; he would do just fine without seeing that guy’s face again.

Elijah watched closely as Danté left the scene. He didn't like the guy, not just because of the situation he had walked upon, but just in general. He had a weird aura around him, and Elijah thought it might be a good idea to keep an eye on Zach every once in a while. He turned to look at Zach, and nodded when he said 'thanks'.

"Don't worry about it," he said with a wave of him hand. "That guy was a dick." Elijah flicked his nose in Danté's direction, and then watched as Zach nervously tried to make his leave. The alchemist really didn't have to explain anything to Elijah, but the fact that he did brought a small smile to his face. "Home sounds pretty good right now," he said. "I gotta get going myself." The elemental lifted a hand to wave, and then turned to head toward the bungalows. He had a feeling he'd see Zach again, and that it would be under better circumstances.
