Few things could make the vampire pause in his steps, especially if he was infuriated, but the younger girl’s stomp of her foot and the sound that emanated from her throat just happened to be one of those things. Hayate froze temporarily in mid-step, glaring at her still with a newly shocked expression upon his face. He wanted to march right up to her, but some strange force held him back for a moment — long enough for the girl to turn her back upon him and stalk off. Hayate finally came back to his senses and charged after her through the crowd, seeing her grab hands with a strange boy. A flame leapt up from inside of his chest, scorching the back of his mouth, and the vampire growled like the possessive animal he was.
The crowd meant little to him as he shoved his way through the bodies to reach Chris. He had no idea what she thought she was doing or why she had even looked at him that way, but it mattered little to Hayate. It was bad enough he had to deal with Irei the last few days. With Chris acting the way she was acting, Hayate was going to have to rip someone’s throat out just to feel better about his week.
Suddenly, Chris halted and held her clasped hand — united with the boy’s — up into the air. She announced it loudly like it was something she wanted him to see. He wracked his mind for answers as he felt his blood boiling, and then he remembered. Dione. He had held her hand in public, and Chris must have somehow found out about it. Hayate did not know how, but he was not going to put up with this behavior.
Crossing the final distance, Hayate tore Chris’s hand away from the boy’s hand and shoved the boy away. “Leave,” Hayate demanded harshly, the boy’s eyes filled with fear right before he fled, running off from the both of them as fast as his feet could carry him downwind. Hayate turned his scowling face to Chris and barely allowed himself time to think. Out there in front of everyone with many eyes watching them, Hayate scooped her up around the waist and threw her onto his shoulder, stalking out of the crowded market place and taking her with him.
