Chris and Hayate: Confessions of a jealous teenager
Who: Chris and Hayate
When: November 10, 2007 - Afternoon
Where: Start - Near the café, End - Hayate's cottage
What: Hayate isn't the only one who gets possessive

Chris had been in a bad mood ever since the day she spied Hayate with another woman. The image was burned on her memory, a wretched reminder that the boy that she liked had been holding hands with another girl! She stomped everywhere she went, and her brother knew better than to get in her way. She didn't answer him when he asked her what was wrong, choosing to give him the evil eye instead of telling him her problems. He was a boy, and at that point Chris thought that all boys were jerks.

The young girl hadn't left the water bungalow until today, her feet dragging her toward the Market Place. Chris wasn't going anyplace in particular she just needed to walk around to clear her mind, but all she kept thinking about was Hayate and how she missed him. But she didn't want to miss him - he didn't deserve to be missed! He was with someone else, holding hands with someone else, and he was a big jerk because of it!

She growled under her breath, steam rising from her parted lips. It was chilly out, and there was some snow on the ground from the morning. Was this their first snow of the season? Chris didn't know, and she didn't care at the moment. She sighed a little, and lifted her head to see where she was going. Her breath caught in her chest and she stopped dead in her tracks. There, standing in front of the café, was Hayate. Chris looked around for the other girl, but it seemed as if the vampire was alone. Unable to move from her spot (since it seemed her feet had a mind of their own) Chris decided to glare at him. Her anger rose in her chest as her eyes remained fixed on the vampire.

Hayate had not seen Chris for days on end, and it was beginning to worry him. It was not like Chris to fail in her visits or to at least inform him by letter of where she was or what she was doing. The lack of her presence grated against his nerves, making him more irritable than usual. Just two days ago, he had gone to her cottage in the forest to see if she was there; however, upon his arrival, he found no one and nothing there at all. Anger struck into the Hayate's chest as he tore through the house, looking for any sort of clue. He wondered where she had gone or what had happened to her and the family who occupied the cottage with her and her sibling, but he found no traces of either. The cottage had been wiped clean down to the last crumb on the countertops.

It unsettled him enough to inquire of her whereabouts with some of the neighbors, but the only thing they could tell him was they saw the family moving out. No one knew their destination, and some even said those within the house went their separate ways. Hayate was not sure what that meant or what had caused the disruption in Chris's home, but he wanted to find her and he couldn't. His fury over the situation grew for the last two days, but he kept it well hidden.

Still, he had not heard yet from Chris.

Then, he was leaving the café today with a cup of warm blood in his hands when he looked up and spotted her in the distance. So shocked was he that he could have dropped the cup in his hands and gone after her, but she was glaring at him. Chris was glaring at him. The temporary shock was replaced with his own anger as she stared at him in such a way, and he shoved the cup into a random stranger's hand and went after the girl.

"Chris," Hayate called, and he did not at all sound happy.

Apparently, staring at Hayate intently was all she needed to get his attention. The corner of her lip twitched as if she were about to smirk, but she stopped herself when she saw him approaching. Anger was written all over his face, the same with hers, and it was palpable to all those around them.

Chris's chest was heaving with every breath she took, and before Hayate reached her she stomped her right foot against the ground and let out an aggravated squeal. It was directed at the vampire, one that distinctly showed that she was very very upset at him. Chris huffed like a petulant child, and then turned on her heel to stomp away from Hayate. She didn't look over her shoulder at him, too furious as the memory of him holding another girl's hand echoed in her mind.

She had to get back at him for that; had to get him to feel what she felt. The young girl's eyes roamed the crowd until she found a boy standing in the distance. She ran up to the strange boy, and grabbed his hand without even asking.

"What are you doing?" The stranger demanded as Chris dragged him along the walkway.

"I'm holding your hand," she said angrily. "What does it look like I'm doing?" Chris didn't leave any room for argument as she cast a venomous stare at him. The boy kept his mouth shut and allowed Chris to pull him along until she stopped suddenly.

"See this!" She said as she turned around with the boy to face Hayate. She held their hands in the air, displaying it for everyone, but particularly the vampire. "I can hold other people's hands, too!"

Few things could make the vampire pause in his steps, especially if he was infuriated, but the younger girl’s stomp of her foot and the sound that emanated from her throat just happened to be one of those things. Hayate froze temporarily in mid-step, glaring at her still with a newly shocked expression upon his face. He wanted to march right up to her, but some strange force held him back for a moment — long enough for the girl to turn her back upon him and stalk off. Hayate finally came back to his senses and charged after her through the crowd, seeing her grab hands with a strange boy. A flame leapt up from inside of his chest, scorching the back of his mouth, and the vampire growled like the possessive animal he was.

The crowd meant little to him as he shoved his way through the bodies to reach Chris. He had no idea what she thought she was doing or why she had even looked at him that way, but it mattered little to Hayate. It was bad enough he had to deal with Irei the last few days. With Chris acting the way she was acting, Hayate was going to have to rip someone’s throat out just to feel better about his week.

Suddenly, Chris halted and held her clasped hand — united with the boy’s — up into the air. She announced it loudly like it was something she wanted him to see. He wracked his mind for answers as he felt his blood boiling, and then he remembered. Dione. He had held her hand in public, and Chris must have somehow found out about it. Hayate did not know how, but he was not going to put up with this behavior.

Crossing the final distance, Hayate tore Chris’s hand away from the boy’s hand and shoved the boy away. “Leave,” Hayate demanded harshly, the boy’s eyes filled with fear right before he fled, running off from the both of them as fast as his feet could carry him downwind. Hayate turned his scowling face to Chris and barely allowed himself time to think. Out there in front of everyone with many eyes watching them, Hayate scooped her up around the waist and threw her onto his shoulder, stalking out of the crowded market place and taking her with him.

Hayate wasn't the only one who was possessive, though he expressed it in much different ways than Chris did. The girl wasn't violent, but she did get angry at the idea of her vampire holding hands with some other girl. Why wouldn't she get upset over it, especially after the things they had done together and the fact that he asked her to be in a relationship?

She felt oddly satisfied that she was able to incite such an angry response out of him; at least now he would know what she had been feeling for the past few days. She wanted him to feel the sting of jealousy, too, and it was the only reason she went up to the boy she did not know. He wasn't even someone she would consider cute, but he would do. Chris only needed a hand to hold for a moment, long enough to get Hayate to make a definite move.

The moment came when he pulled her hand away from the stranger's, and growled at him to leave. Chris glared at Hayate just as he scowled at her. Their eyes only met for an instant, though the gaze felt like it lasted much longer. Her chest was heaving, and before she knew it Hayate had grabbed her around the waist and was carrying her away over his shoulder.

"Let me go! Let me go!" She said as her fists pounded themselves against his back. She wiggled her legs as if she were trying to get free, but there wasn't much effort behind her moves. Chris wasn't actually trying very hard to get away from the vampire, and he would have guessed it from the first hit she delivered to his body. She let out another squeal in protest, though she was secretly enjoying the way Hayate was carrying her away.

No matter how much she demanded to be let go, Chris ought to have known he was not going to put her down any time soon. Even with half of the crowd watching them as he carried her off, Hayate could have all but forgotten the presence of the masses in the market place. So single-minded was his purpose — and his feelings, if they could be called that — leading him to carry her off like some primitive human from times gone past. In many ways he was still primitive, or at least he had retreated in to a different state of mind that most human beings had supposedly long surpassed. Perhaps he had an excuse they did not, though. Vampires had their own ways, of course, and he had given in to them all. What use had he of human things?

Hayate knew the reasons for her acting this way as well, but it did not mean he knew how to control himself when it came to his anger. The vampire still had a long way to go with that particular lesson. Her fists collided with his back, but he barely felt the blows from her light hands. Once they were far enough from the crowd and Chris had not given up her squirming, Hayate used his free hand to slap her once across the rear. “Stop that,” he ordered, his voice as hard as stone to get his point across to her. A period of silence from him passed before he said anything else, regardless of whatever Chris felt the need to say. Hayate was trying his best to collect himself. Who knew something as simple as her grabbing a hold of another’s hand would have upset him like this?

“Dione is blind,” Hayate bit out through gritted teeth. “She uses a cane to walk because she cannot see. She is just a friend of mine, and I was holding her hand to help her walk since we were going to the same place.” Hayate had never explained himself to anyone before. It was strange, feeling the need to explain things and wanting the other person to understand and accept it. It was new to him, as many other things with Chris were. Still, he continued to walk. They were not yet at his cottage, and they still had some time to go. Luckily, Hayate did not tire easily.

Chris didn't care about the stares from the crowd either. She didn't know them and so their opinion on the situation didn't matter. Did it matter that she was being carted off over a vampire's shoulder? Maybe other people thought it was odd, but it was anything but for Chris.

The slap across her bottom brought forth a small squeak, but it was effective to get her to stop squirming in his grasp. Her lower lip jutted out in a pout, and she would have crossed her arms like a spoiled child were she in a better position to do so. All she could do was hang there, blonde hair swaying side to side as the vampire made his way to his cottage.

She didn't expect for Hayate to start explaining himself to her, but the moment she heard that the other girl was blind... well, it made Chris's heart twinge with guilt. She had stopped pouting as she listened to the rest of Hayate's explanation. It all made sense, but a part of Chris couldn't help but still be upset. Was there something wrong with her cane in the first place that he had to hold her hand? That thought alone made Chris doubt Hayate all over again. It was probably a convenient excuse that she was blind - it gave him the perfect reason to hold her hand whenever they were together.

Chris felt herself getting more upset over her assumptions that she began to cry silently as she was being carried. "Do you like her," she asked suddenly in a small, sad voice. "Do you like... like her more than you like me?" She was crying a little more now, and she began to sniffle because of it.

Hayate had every right to hold the hand of a blind woman, cane or not. It was not something he was going to argue with the young girl. Obviously, he was not involved with Dione in any way beyond friendship and the vampire was perfectly happy with that arrangement. Dione’s intelligence made her an enjoyable speaking companion, nothing more. Yes, she was a good-looking lady, but the thought hardly crossed Hayate’s mind amidst their conversations. Chris’s jealousy was understandable, but at the same time it did not prevent it from being annoying.

Then, the worst possible thing that could have happened took place. Chris burst into tears and began to cry as she swung over his shoulder. He could smell her silent tears, even if he could not hear them, save through the tone of her scratchy, small voice. Her question sparked Hayate to roll his eyes as he paused upon the grass halfway between the marketplace and his cottage.

Hefting her off of his shoulder and placing her upon her feet on the ground, Hayate set the young girl up in such a way that he could look her in the face as he talked to her. His hands were resting upon her shoulders, bright eyes looking back at her and trying their best to remain calm. “Chris, I do not like her as anything more than a friend. She does not think of me in that way either, so please stop this.”

Hayate scooped the young girl into his arms after that, carrying her in a more traditional way back to his home. “You should not be so soft in these matters. Accusing someone who has not done anything is not fair.” He stated it plainly without malice; it annoyed him, but it no longer made him angry.

Of course Chris's jealousy was understandable. She liked Hayate, and she didn't want to see him holding hands with another woman, good reason or not. He might have been annoyed with her, but Chris didn't see anything wrong with her reaction and she didn't stop her pouting until he took her off his shoulder. The vampire held her shoulders as he spoke, and Chris stared at him with wide-eyes. His words made her feel better about the situation, but she still felt guilty that she doubted him in the first place.

She let out a surprised gasp when he lifted her into his arms. Chris wasn't expecting that, but that didn't mean she didn't like it. She smiled a little though she was confused by his words. How was she supposed to be in this sort of situation? She had never experienced jealousy like this before, but she didn't think her reaction was incorrect, either. "I'm sorry," she said. "I just..." Her face was drawn with slight confusion, eyes filled with youthful innocence. If her reaction was soft, then was she supposed to be 'hard'? Tough? Chris didn't know, so she asked. "How am I supposed to be then?"

She didn't want to upset him if her initial reaction was wrong, and she did agree that it wasn't fair to accuse someone of something they hadn't done. Though she actually saw Hayate holding hands with someone else, she didn't know under what pretenses he was holding her hand, and so she accused him of liking someone else. She wondered if it hurt his feelings, and she felt even more guilty as she rested her head against his shoulder.

Arguing with Chris over this naturally frustrated him; it was not as if he was any better at dealing with these things than her, no matter the difference in their ages, and it sparked his jealousy in the same way that hers had been sparked at the sight of him holding another woman’s hand. She was annoyed with him just as much as he was annoyed with her because it was natural for both of them. They were each children in mind, half-developed and not quite adept at dealing with those pesky things called emotions. His emotions held sway over him in utter control of his every move, and the same was true for Chris. The only difference was Hayate understood only negative ones, felt only negative ones, or transformed all things into something cruel or unnatural. Chris’s saving grace was her ability to access positive emotions, to feel them and understand them.

Hayate had no such ability.

The crying had not helped matters. After all, the last thing in the world that Hayate knew how to counter was crying from a female. He had only ever ignored it in the past or made it worse on purpose. Never, not once, had he ever been the one to try to soothe them away. Crying frustrated the vampire even more because it was something he did not understand or know how to respond to properly.

He knew what he had said to her, but he was not sure how to explain it at first. Then, he knew. “Next time, talk to me first,” Hayate revealed, looking down at her briefly before watching the road ahead. “Don’t vanish and never come see me.” It had angered him so much when she did not come to see him, but it had also done something else inexplicable.

The entire situation was frustrating for Chris. She didn't know how to deal with these things, and no amount of reading manga or research in the library would ever give her the right answer. She couldn't go to Charlie with the problem because he had less experience than she did, and as much as Chris liked Riley she still wasn't sure if she was someone she could talk with. It would take more time for Chris to open up to the older woman. That left Hayate as her source of guidance for situations like these, which was convenient considering he was more often than not directly related to them.

Chris felt like she was being reprimanded by her favorite vampire, though he was carrying her like she was some sort of princess. She felt utterly silly for reacting the way that she did in public, and she wished she could take it back. But it was done, and all she could do was not do it again in the future. She looked up at him sadly, her lips forming a pout once more. Chris wasn't about to cry, but that didn't mean she couldn't whine a little.

"Well I was coming to see you to tell you that I moved, but then I saw you holding hands with your friend and I got mad and decided not to come see you because I didn't think you would miss me," she admitted in a long breath. "I'm sorry," she said again. "Forgive me? Please?" She reached a hand to his shirt to clutch at the fabric lightly. "I really missed you a lot, Hayate."

The pout, which may have been annoying just moments ago, retained yet again its playful quality he so enjoyed seeing in her; it was no longer frustration or unhappiness as a result of him, and perhaps the knowledge of her reasons influenced his view of it. Knowing she was no longer upset with him soothed the savage beast much better than any refrain of music could produce in Hayate.

As he glanced down at Chris, it was clear in his expression that her belief had been wrong. His gaze preferred her to all others, no matter how twisted or deformed his definition of desire; she was the center of it, an unhealthy obsession he would not give up for anything. “Of course,” he told her, granting her forgiveness. Hayate could forgive her almost anything, though there were limits to his reasonable abilities; some things might only be granted forgiveness through exacted punishment, but it seemed unlikely Chris would ever go to such lengths as that to test him. Hopefully, they would never have to find out.

Her hand clutched the material of his shirt, and the touch of her fingers against his chest stirred awake a deeper primal instinct; a sense of ownership. He owned her in his mind’s eye, and it seemed to him but a reality of the time. “I’ve missed you, too,” he said softly in admittance, the ability to show gentleness not beyond him.

Chris could never stay upset with Hayate for very long. It was impossible considering the feelings she had for him, even when the vampire was at his worst and ready to harm her. She never felt hatred for him though others certainly thought he deserved it. He was practically perfect in her eyes, and his forgiveness meant the world to her. She smiled brightly at him, and she couldn't have been happier.

She felt a weight being lifted off her chest now that they had made up, and she didn't want anything more than to stay with him. When she and Charlie had moved out of the forest cottages Chris wanted to move in with the vampire, but her brother had already asked Riley. She decided to stay with her brother, but that didn't mean she didn't want to be with Hayate. She gripped his shirt tighter, and nestled herself against him. Hayate owned her completely because she gave her body, mind, and soul to him. Chris closed her eyes as the vampire continued to carry her back to his cottage, the place that felt the most like home to her.
