He smiled as she rested her head against his shoulder. “So, it’s not too childish, then?” Zach just wanted to check and make sure. He was of the mind that you were never too old to enjoy the simple things you enjoyed as a child, but he wasn’t always sure if anyone else felt the same. He knew Nico would have flat out laughed at him if he knew that Zach had built a mini-palace out of sheets in his room for Adrienne (at least he thought Nico would laugh at him for it), but Alicia would have thought it was the ‘cutest thing ever.’ Adrienne, thankfully, thought it was wonderful. It was meant for her, so her opinion mattered the most. Luckily, it was a good one.
Zach was curious to know what she had wished for as she blew out of her candles, but he wasn’t going to ask. There was tradition of not asking about someone’s wish because if they told you, it wouldn’t come true. Zach kept his mouth shut, the corners of his lips quirked upwards in a faint smirk, as he fought off the urge to ask. Just because he wasn’t supposed to didn’t mean he didn’t want to.
The moment passed, though, and the candles were out. The other lights he had set up still illuminated the miniature palace and bathed them in a warm golden light. He looked over at Adrienne as she cupped his cheek, and he felt butterflies in his stomach. It was strange how he still felt those things, but Zach supposed it was a good thing to still feel them. He smiled softly and kissed her back. When they broke apart, he echoed the same words. “I love you, too.”
His smile turned into a grin, and he wasted no time to grab for her present and pass along the big box to her. “Open it,” Zach urged quickly, wanting to see her reaction to the present he had gotten her as well.
