The History of Zach and Adrienne: Take 3
Who: Adrienne and Zach
When: Thursday: February 1, 2007 (Around 11 AM)
Where: The forest outside the school
What: Their first outing, hiking in the forest.

Finals week was turning out to be pretty easy for Adrienne. Not that she was a genius or anything, but she was the type of student who stayed at the top of her game and liked to do well in class. Of course, there were subjects that just didn't sink in but those were few and far between. Her mother always told her that there was nothing that a little hard work and concentration couldn't overcome, and Adrienne found that she was right.

So when she was the first to finish her Supernatural History final, everyone was surprised except for Adrienne. History was her favorite subject after all, plus she really didn't want to be late for her outing with Zach. No, she wasn't going to call it a 'date'; even she knew not to count her chickens before they hatched (or however the saying went). This was just her keeping a promise to a guy; granted, it was a guy that she was interested in but she wasn't going to get her hopes up even though they shared a kiss the day before. Zach had been the one to initiate it, and that would normally be taken as a good sign. But Adrienne was still a little too jaded by the situation with Simon, and as a result she was determined to not to put much thought into Zach's actions.

Despite her misgivings Adrienne was looking forward to spending time with Zach as they explored the outside of the school. The forests were her favorite by far, but even she hadn't had time to explore them in their entirety. As she walked to the main hall Adrienne sketched out the path she'd take with Zach that day. They'd have to start on the main path that cut through the middle of the forest, but then she'd take him West toward the mountains where she was sure she spotted a cave the night of the full moon. If anything, the area might provide some challenging terrain and it had been far too long since Adrienne had the chance to do any sort of hiking.

She arrived in the main hall completely dressed for an outdoor adventure. She was wearing a pair of comfortable, hip hugging blue jeans that flared slightly over her brown hiking boots that added an inch to her height. Instead of wearing an overly bulky jacket, Adrienne opted for layering two long-sleeved shirts under a soft, grey cashmere sweater. Her gloves were stuffed in her back pocket and a black and white scarf hung from her neck. To top off her outdoor ensemble Adrienne wore a charcoal-grey fleece headband, her dark hair falling over it in torrents. She leaned against the wall much in the same fashion that Zach had the day before as she waited for him to arrive.

Zach wasn’t sure what he was doing. He was thinking now that maybe kissing Adrienne this early into meeting her had been a bad move. He was the last person on the planet right now who knew what he wanted and dragging Adrienne into it probably wasn’t fair of him. At the same time, he didn’t want her to think he wasn’t interested and move onto someone else. In the past, he had lost so many opportunities by not acting. Now that he had acted, he was afraid it was too quickly. Was there something in the back of his head that had told him to stake a claim to keep other guys away from her in case she and he decided they wanted to start something later? Zach wasn’t sure.

He didn’t know what to do, what he should do, or what would be appropriate. It was all so utterly confusing, and Zach decided just hanging out with her and not kissing her anymore would help him decide what was best for him — and her.

With his thumbs hooked into his pockets, he emerged in the main hall. Dressed in faded black jeans, a red sweater, and one of his favorite jackets that matched his pants, he looked more comfortable in them than what he had worn yesterday. Zach preferred not to wear scarves, if he could help it. They weren’t his favorite thing in the world, and he didn’t like hats on his head either. He had brought a pair of gloves with himself, though, just in case he needed them. They were leather, though he hadn’t bought them that way. Altering his gloves had been an accident. He had a lot of clothes like that, which made most people think he preferred to buy expensive clothes made out of special fabrics. It wasn't the truth, but Zach had never been able to tell anyone the truth before.

Looking up, he hadn’t expected to see her doing the same thing he had done yesterday. Adrienne was lounging against the wall and waiting for him. Zach had trouble fighting a smirk off of his face. She was wearing grey today. His favorite color. His boots trudged against the floor, surely loud enough as he drew closer to eventually bring her attention to his direction without him having to call out to her. He wondered what she had planned for today.

The sound of his boots were loud all right and when Adrienne looked up she couldn't help but smile. Yeah, she was going to play it cool, act like hanging out with him was no big deal. In truth though, she was looking forward to this. Not only because she would get to go outside, but also because she'd be going with someone who enjoyed the outdoors just as much as she did.

Plus he was cute.

He definitely had that going for him. She pushed herself off the wall and tried to stifle her smile by chewing on her lower lip. "You're right on time," she said finally as she pulled her gloves from her back pocket. She wondered what he thought about kissing her the day before. Was it too soon for the both of them considering that had literally just met? Would this be something that could ruin their 'relationship' - be it friendship or more - in the long run? Adrienne didn't want to think about the possible 'what ifs' that were too far down the road to see; besides, they couldn't take it back. They were supernatural but as far as Adrienne knew no one had the power to go back in time and change things. The best thing to do was to move on.

Though truth be told, Adrienne didn't regret kissing Zach. Not one bit.

"The weather's perfect out there." Happiness crossed her features and she turned toward the doors that would lead outside. "We've got a lot of ground to cover so we better get going." Their journey would begin on the snow-covered path that cut right through the middle of the forest. It was an easy walk that went uphill gradually, but after that it would get a little more strenuous.

He had been looking forward to get outside and do some serious trekking. Some people liked shores and others liked gardens, but neither was particularly appealing overall to Zach. His preference was for the trees and the woodland and cliffs and anything that required him to work for where he was going. A stroll wasn’t any fun. Now, a hike was fun. This was Zach’s idea of a day out, and he was glad to be spending it with Adrienne.

Despite his uncertainty over their kiss, he enjoyed her company. Adrienne was a fun girl. She liked doing the same things he did, and he never thought he’d cross a girl like that. Most of them were more concerned with not messing up their appearance. Anything that involved hiking or trekking, climbing or other such activities was a big no-no. There were a lot of girls who liked to swim, but usually only in a pool or at the beach.

If he wasn’t an alchemist, Zach knew he would be an earthmage. Water, fire, and air were nothing compared to earth. Of course, the funny thing was earth lived, and the other ‘elements’ didn’t live or couldn’t live. They weren’t alive; they were dead things. Earth also depended upon the others to survive. It was these interesting tributes that made earth-related powers more intriguing to him than any of the others. It was life. It was unique.

“I’m glad I’m on time,” Zach said with a smile. Yesterday he wasn’t on time for Kalli and Starbuck’s exploration, and he wasn’t sure if he had made a good impression or not because of that. “My watch broke, and now I don’t have one. I can’t tell the time if I’m not in my room.” Zach hadn’t seen clocks on the walls around here, or maybe he was just missing them. Did they blend in with the color of the walls?

Zach was glad to hear the weather was great. He followed along beside Adrienne. His gloves were already on, so he didn’t have to put them on. “Lead the way,” he told her with a chipper voice.

Adrienne led the way outside and away from the school. The snow was deep, going halfway up Adrienne’s calf but she didn’t mind one bit. It was nice to breathe in fresh air and watch it steam away from her face as she breathed out. The sound of the birds in the trees was like music to her ears, and the feel of her feet crunching in the snow was a welcome change from the hollow echo that came from walking on stone floors.

She glanced at Zach from the corner of her eyes and grinned. He was keeping up with her fairly well through their snowy trek. The path was barely visible but Adrienne knew it by scent and by heart. She had walked this way several times alone but never ventured far from the path because of the weather. Their way began to take on a slight upward incline and she glanced over her shoulder at Zach once more.

“So how’s your head feeling today?” She asked without slowing down. Her blood was flowing rapidly through her body and she could feel heat emanating from her skin. She was glad that she didn’t wear her heavier jacket otherwise she would have ended up tossing it somewhere because of the heat. The layers were perfect and if she did get hot, she could always take one off without really risking frostbite or illness.

Her cheeks were turning red against the cold and from the flow of blood. Snow fell from overhead branches as their path slowly changed from being under the open sky to one that was under a canopy of evergreen branches and barren deciduous trees. It was a veritable winter wonderland as the crystalline flakes fell onto Adrienne’s dark hair and remained there like small diamonds before melting away. The fauna of the forest was echoing all around now and when Adrienne looked back down the path, the school had all but disappeared.

The path was becoming narrower as well and Adrienne paused for a moment to get her bearings. She took a deep breath, the memory of trees and moonlit runs flooding her mind and she instantly knew where she was. She smiled at Zach, eyes twinkling with happiness.

“Isn’t this amazing?” There was a sense of awe and wonder in her voice as she took a step closer to Zach. “Are you having fun?”

Zach let her lead the way since he wasn’t sure of the path she was taking and had never been outside of the school before. Keeping close to her side but remaining two or three steps back, he followed her through the snow. It was a little tougher than the level of snow he was used to back at home. Snow never fell this thick when he lived. His boots crunched down what felt like torrents of white powdery snow, paving a path along the way that Adrienne was leading him.

His eyes mostly kept focused on the ground to watch where he was going, so he missed Adrienne’s glance backwards to see how he was doing. The route they were on grew slightly steeper, and Zach had to tread more carefully. His legs weren’t that long. It required more balance for him to keep himself steady in conditions like this compared to taller people with longer legs that had more room to maneuver.

“My head’s feeling better,” Zach replied, his eyes still glued on the snowy path ahead. His cheeks were growing warmer, breath coming out in visible puffs from his mouth. Heat from his body mixed with biting cold air awakened his mind, which was still sluggish as he hadn’t woken up very long ago.

They reached a patch of evergreen trees, their brightly colored leaves standing out against the snowy winter world around them. Bare branches from other trees hung over them as well, the spots of color welcome against the ashen landscape. Flakes of cloudy ice settled atop his black hair, some of them falling onto his face and tickling his nose. Zach brushed them away. Forest had sprung up all around them at this point. He walked closer to Adrienne as the path narrowed, gazing upward at the branches overhead.

She paused, though, and he didn’t look back down in time to notice. His side bumped into hers as they came to a halt on the snow-covered path of the forest floor. Zach instinctively reached out, one hand grasping her side and the other taking her arm, to make sure she didn’t fall over. It was something he always did with Alicia back at home. He was supposed to keep her safe whenever they wandered into the wilderness. Don’t let your sister get hurt, his mother would say.

Adrienne wasn’t his sister, though. When he realized neither of them was about to topple over, he slowly lowered his hands and tore his gaze away from her to look around in an absentminded manner. “It’s beautiful,” he said with a casual tone, keeping his eyes on their surroundings and not on her as he said it. He finally looked back with a smile. “Yeah, it’s great. I’m not used to walking in snow this thick, though. Only boarding over it.”

The snow was deep; deeper than Adrienne expected but she was determined to keep going. There was no way she’d ‘wimp out’ in front of Zach; besides, she wasn’t that kind of girl. She liked the challenge plus it had been far too long since she ventured away from the school.

The snow that fell from above felt like tiny pricks against Adrienne’s warm skin; she enjoyed the contrast of hot-and-cold. She took a deep breath and sighed right when Zach bumped into her. She was about to say something funny when he grabbed onto her, one hand on her waist the other on her arm. Her mouth opened again to say something but he was looking elsewhere and his hands slipped from her body.

Maybe it was best to not say anything at all. Maybe they needed to take a step back after they had kissed. Funny, usually people moved forward after a kiss, not backward. But their circumstances were unique and considering that they were just getting to know one another, stepping back would be best.

“I’ve only gone snowboarding once,” she said without saying anymore. She turned toward the West and looked through the thicket of trees. “We’re gonna cut through here. The snow drifts won’t be as deep in there so it’ll be easier to walk. But the terrain won’t be as even.” She grinned and stepped onto a nearby log and balanced herself on it easily as she walked toward the trees. “C’mon!”

Relief coursed through him when she didn’t say anything about what had just happened. He wouldn’t have expected to feel as embarrassed as he did about something as simple as that happening between them, but there it was. Part of him wanted to take the kiss back to make things normal, but another part felt that was selfish of him. He was trying to take it slow in order to figure things out, realizing he didn’t know what that meant.

“You should try it again sometime,” Zach said, following her through the new path she began to cut between the trees. “I snowboarded all the time at home whenever we went off to find drifts.” Zach didn’t mind uneven terrain as long as there wasn’t as much snow clogging his ability to walk. Uneven he could deal with easily.

“Is there a particular place out here we’re heading towards?” He thought he would ask just in case. Zach had no idea where this path eventually led to, if it led anywhere. Would they be trekking back the way they came? As much as he was enjoying the adventure, he wasn’t sure if he would be able to come all the way out here, go all the way back, and then head out into the city without a break in between. It sounded exhausting just thinking about it.

The uneven terrain was challenging but it seemed that Zach was able to navigate through it easily. Adrienne looked over her shoulder, smiling, and then turned her eyes forward so she wouldn’t walk into a tree or fall into a ditch. That would be bad, not to mention embarrassing. The caves were only a few more minutes away and that seemed to be a good thing since Zach seemed worried about where they were going in the first place.

Adrienne paused by a tree, her arm going around it easily as she rested for a moment. “Well maybe we can go together sometime. Snowboarding I mean.” She didn’t turn to look at him as her eyes glanced over toward where the caves were located. “And there were some caves over there,” she raised her left hand and pointed to a small outcropping of the mountain. It was covered with snow and blocked by some bushes, but an opening was visible. “I saw it during the full moon. Made a mental note to come and explore it when I wasn’t growly.”

A small laugh escaped her throat and bent down to pick up something in front of her. She was there for a few moments before she stood back up and turned to face Zach. “Don’t worry we won’t be out here all day.” She had something behind her back but didn’t indicate to Zach what it was. “I don’t want to wear you out too much – it is our first time, after all.” There was a smirk there curling on her rosy lips as she was far too aware of the innuendo she just made. But it couldn’t be helped, there was a weird tension in the air and Adrienne was determined to make it disappear.

After another second she brought her hands in front of her and revealed a good sized snowball. She tossed it into the air a couple of times and caught it deftly when it descended. “Now I distinctly remember you saying that you could keep up with me, right?” As soon as she said that she threw the snowball in Zach’s direction aiming for his chest. She would wait to see if it hit its mark before she would go running in the direction of the caves.

Aside from a moment or two where he had to ensure his balance, Zach was doing much better along this path in comparison to the snow. He walked until Adrienne stopped at a tree and leaned against it. Pausing as well, he glanced around to check out their surroundings while she spoke. “Yeah,” Zach agreed happily, “that’d be great.” It’d been some time since he snowboarded last, but there was nothing like the rush of careening down a drift in mid-winter. Well, aside from jumping off a rocky cliff into the ocean.

At her insistence, he followed the path of her hand to see where she was pointing. He could see the opening, too, but it looked near impossible to reach from here. “A cave, eh?” he asked. “Sounds like fun.” There was a smile on his face, which proved he was interested despite his calm tone.

Adrienne laughed, though, and drew his attention to her again. She was bent towards the ground for a moment before standing up straight again. He wasn’t sure what she had just done and arched his eyebrows when she faced him again with her hands behind her back. Zach recognized the innuendo in her words, which caused him to make a face at her somewhere between amusement and defensiveness.

She was confusing. Everything she did and said kept telling him to act. Maybe that’s why he kissed her yesterday. Was she just being playful, though, or did she mean it? Adrienne had told him she was flirting with him because she thought he was cute. If so, why was he taking a step back? Shouldn’t he be taking a step forward? His heart was pounding, and he couldn’t tell if it was because of the walk or not.

He was so focused on his thoughts that he didn’t realize she had a snowball in her hands until she spoke again and broke him from his reverie. Just then, she chucked it in his direction. It hit Zach square in the chest, bringing him back to reality. Zach blinked at her for one second before he dove to scoop up some snow and balled it up in his hands. Hurling the snowball at Adrienne, he waited to see if it hit.

So he wasn’t opposed to spending more time with her? Well that was a good sign. He didn’t sound too enthused about the caves, though. Had she seen the smile on his face she would have seen that he was, but her back was turned and all she heard was his calm voice. She sighed softly, resolving to come back to the caves by herself, if they didn’t get to it today.

And what was up with the look he gave her? Sure, she was flirting with him, dropping the double entendre the same way she did the day before and when they talked over messenger. But now he looked confused – as if what she said was out of the blue. She bit her tongue to quiet the doubt that was growing deep inside. It was a bad habit of hers to think too much on what guys thought about her, specifically her looks. She never thought she was ‘hot’ or ‘gorgeous’ – she was just all right, or cute, and on a good day she was pretty.

Zach probably kissed her because he felt sorry for her or something. Or he wanted to shut her up. Adrienne smiled at him though as her mind tried to push her negative thoughts away. Her eyes were traitorous though as they swirled with confusion in those few moments before she tossed the snowball at him. If anything, they could have fun playing in the snow, right?

Direct hit! The snowball splattered against his red jacket sending flakes everywhere. She turned to run away but it wasn’t before Zach’s snowball hit her right on the ass. A small, happy ‘eek’ echoed through the forest and she stopped to pat the snow off the butt of her jeans. A feral-like smile grew upon her lips and there was a mischievous sparkle in her eyes.

“Oh you are SO going to pay for that.” She bent down and scooped up enough snow to make three snow balls. She formed them quickly in her gloved hands and picked them up in her arms before ducking behind a tree. She tossed one from one side toward Zach and then continued running toward the caves. She looked over her shoulder to see where he was and in a moment’s folly Adrienne tripped over an exposed root and fell face down into a snow bank. Even wolf-like reflexes couldn’t make up for clumsiness and lack of attention.

What Adrienne didn’t know was that Zach was only eighteen and, frankly, had next to no experience when it came to actually being with females. He was good at the friend stuff. In fact, he was excellent at it. Secondly, while he had dated a few times, he never had anything in the past that could be categorized as serious. Thirdly, it wasn’t because he disliked her in any way. It was because he doubted himself. Insecurity plagued him around every corner when it came to women.

As much as he was flirting with her, Zach didn’t have any experience to back it up. What if they actually dated and then she found out? What if she wanted nothing to do with him? There was no stronger death knell for a guy than the fact that he didn’t have any experience when it came to matters of sex. If Zach was stepping away, it was probably because of that. Adrienne talked a big game — and secretly, he was terrified of it.

He had kissed her because he wanted to, but Adrienne felt out of his league. The more and more he thought about it, the more he wanted to back away and just be friends.

Zach laughed aloud, not expecting his snowball to hit her on the ass. His worries left his head. He just wanted to have fun today. “I’m going to pay?” he challenged. “You started it!” Diving to scoop up more snow, Zach made a second weapon of it and aimed for Adrienne, but she had successfully ducked behind a tree.

Dodging her second snowball, he managed to miss getting hit that time. When he turned to run in her direction, though, he witnessed Adrienne suddenly fall over into the snow. He paused for a moment, waiting to see if she got up. She didn’t. Dropping his snowball, Zach hurried towards her. “Adrienne?” he called, the worry clear in his voice. He fell down onto his knees when he reached her. Zach took her by the shoulder, carefully turning her over. “Adrienne, are you okay?”

It probably wouldn't have made a difference had Adrienne known his age. At this point she learned the value of liking a person for who they were rather than how old they were. Age was just a number when it came down to it.

Experience was a whole other plate of cookies, but it wasn't like Adrienne surpassed Zach by much. Granted she wasn't a virgin but she also wasn't raking in the big bucks as a porn star. She knew enough to get by, as it were. And hell, considering that it had been close to two years since she had sex last, Adrienne wouldn't have been surprised if she had forgotten a thing or two.

Regardless, she still wasn't aware of the insecurities that plagued Zach or that he felt that she was out of his league. Though truthfully, wouldn't that be her choice? She had already expressed her interest in him, even told him he was cute. A girl who was out of his league wouldn't even say those things.

Or have a snowball fight with him.

And all was going well with it until she clumsily tripped on a root and went plowing into the snow. The cold powder flew up everywhere and Adrienne was blinded by the white snow. She felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment and all she could think of doing was to lay there, face down in the snow until it subsided.

But then Zach's voice rang out despite the sound of her heartbeat in her ears. Then she felt his hand on her shoulder. Oh great, he probably thought she was a total dork now. She rolled over, an embarrassed and shy smile on her face. Her hair was littered with snow as was her face. She went to brush it off but only managed to deposit more snow. The flakes on her lashes had melted into sparkling drops of water that reflected the color in her eyes.

"Um, that root came out of nowhere, I swear!" She tried to play it off but her cheeks just turned redder, partly because of the cold but mostly because she was staring up at Zach - who was really cute when he was worried - and feeling entirely sheepish.

Adrienne had gotten more snow in her face went she reached to wipe away the snow that was already there. Carefully, Zach brushed some of it off with his gloved fingers, trying not to let anymore get in her eyes.

“Are you alright?” he asked, despite her cheerful claim of the root coming out of nowhere. He was hoping she hadn’t hurt anything. Zach wasn’t sure if he would be able to help her back that easily if she had. She just kept smiling, though, so it looked like she was alright. A smirk crept up on his face, and he took her by the hand and pulled her to her feet. His hand brushed the snow off her back, making sure he got all of it.

Zach then stepped around to face her. There was a twinkle in his eyes as he smiled. She still looked embarrassed from her fall. Thinking he would have a step up on her in this situation, he proposed a challenge. “Hmm, I have an idea,” Zach said. He paused dramatically, his smile growing wider.

“I’ll race you to the cave!” he declared. Before she could stop him, Zach immediately darted off into the direction of the cave. Watching his feet along the way, he made sure that he wasn’t going to trip on anything as Adrienne had done and hinder his ability to reach the cave before her.

She blushed harder when he helped her brush the snow off her face, her embarrassment growing almost exponentially it seemed. But Zach didn't seem to take notice or make fun of her clumsiness and for that she was glad. He was so different from Simon in many ways, all of them good as far as she was concerned. The more time she spent with someone like Zach, the more she was convinced that her 'feelings' for Simon were nothing more than her wolf seeking companionship. She had to find a balance between her wolf and her human side, and right now it was her non-beast side that was attracted to Zach.

Adrienne looked over her shoulder at Zach as he brushed off the snow. She arched a brow, wondering if he was just doing it to be nice or doing it to secretly have a reason to touch her. It made her feel better to think that he was doing it to cop a casual feel of her butt, and with that she smirked happily.

Adrienne continued with her self-dusting when Zach mentioned having an idea. She looked at him curiously, brows raised in interest. The smile that curled on his lips told her that he was up to something, and before she knew it, he mentioned a race and then darted off without her. She was shocked for a brief moment before she started after him. He had such a head start already that Adrienne wasn't sure if she catch up with him.

"Oh you're such a cheater!" She called after him in mock anger. Adrienne was laughing happily as she ran, this time careful to watch for anything she might trip on. He was still ahead of her and she tried her hardest to try to beat him before they reached the cave. Though at the rate she was going, and considering his lead, this race's winner would be the alchemist.

He hadn’t noticed her blushing, chalking it up to the biting ice on her face that made her skin red. Brushing the snow off her had been an excuse to touch her, too, and Zach had pretty much milked it for all it was worth. He had taken his happy time doing it. Of course, he wasn’t about to admit that out loud at any rate, hoping she would just assume he was being nice and helping her out. He was being nice, but maybe a little too nice. His hand obviously didn’t have to drift down as low as it did.

After he had darted off, Zach heard her claim of him being a cheater. He laughed loudly at that, carving a way through the thicket and snow ahead with a small measure of difficulty. It wasn’t very long before he reached the cave, clearly the first one there, with Adrienne still trailing somewhere behind him on the path.

Stepping inside of the rock face, Zach found there was light towards the mouth of the cave, but it grew darker as it got deeper. He glanced around, staying close to the opening and waiting for Adrienne to get there. He wasn’t sure how deep he wanted to go without light, and Zach didn’t have any way to procure light on himself. Wandering into caves without a light source wasn’t the smartest thing to do either.

Places within the cave seemed to glitter as the sunlight struck them. Zach stared at them, forgetting that Adrienne was coming and might very well tackle him over for what he had done. He was standing right at the mouth, after all, having not moved in any further since he had shown up.

Yeah, Adrienne noticed that his hand moved further down her back and toward her butt but she didn't say anything. He seemed so embarrassed by her remark earlier she thought it might be good to keep that sort of flirting for when they got to know each other better. She didn't mind the touching though; it meant that he was still interested on some level.

She finally caught up with Zach at the cave's dark entrance a minute after he arrived there. She grabbed at him playfully, her arms reaching around his body as she came to a stop. The pair probably stumbled forward a step or two due to Adrienne's momentum. She rested her chin on his shoulder easily and looked into the cave.

"I let you win," she said with a giggle before she let go of him slowly and moved past him into the darkness. Her eyes adjusted easily to the interior of the cave, another benefit of her lycanthropy, but she paused before she got too far from Zach. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her room key that was attached to a small key ring with a few decorations, namely a letter "A" and a small flashlight. It wasn't powerful enough to illuminate the whole cave and the small battery wouldn't last long, but at least it was something.

"We'll be more prepared next time," she said with a smile, her eyes inviting him inside. She sniffed the air discreetly, relieved that she didn't catch the scent of some wild animal. The walls of the cave were glittering more with the added light and Adrienne looked at the walls closely.

"I wonder what this is," she said as a hand reached up to touch what looked like a small jewel of some kind. "Do you know what it is?" She asked Zach pointedly.

Adrienne pounced on him when he wasn’t paying attention, and they stumbled forward a step or two — or three. Zach reached up to reflexively grab at her arms, though not in an attempt to move them. More like a safety grab to make sure he wouldn’t fall over if he held onto her. A laugh escaped him as he managed to keep his balance somehow.

“I let you lose,” he said cheekily, liking the way she had rested her chin on his shoulder. Disappointment filled him when Adrienne immediately let him go, though. She stepped further into the cave, pulling out a keyring and revealing a little flashlight. His mouth curled up at the corner. The little light wasn’t going to be much, but watching Adrienne walk around with a miniature flashlight, which also had decorations hanging from it, in order to explore a cave like this was, well, cute.

“I hope so,” Zach told her, the look of amusement still on his face. Wandering over to where Adrienne stood, his eyes followed the path of her small flashlight for a moment. Eventually, she paused and pointed out a crystallized formation in the cave wall. Zach stepped towards it, peering at it closely. Noticing the peachy color of it, he thought he knew what it was. “It looks like it might be dolomite.” This was, after all, a cave.

Taking his glove off, he brushed his fingers over it. He laid his hand on it and closed his eyes. Closing his eyes always helped with concentration. A moment later, he opened them and removed his hand. It was yellow now, but still retained its glittering quality. “Sapphire,” Zach said softly. “Nowhere near perfect.” He sighed.

Adrienne hadn't wanted to let go of Zach when she hugged him from behind, but she didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable either. Of course, having her chin on his shoulder allowed her to take in his scent fully. She found it odd that her transformation had made her enjoy scents a bit more than usual, especially the scents of people she liked or was interested in. Perhaps it was the pheromones that were mixed in with the natural scent.

The small flashlight didn't provide as much light as Adrienne would have liked but it was better than nothing. Her mind kept telling her there would be a next time, yet her curiosity needed to be satiated right away. The light flickered a few times but then returned to its steady state when she focused on the dolomite. It was beautiful in its natural peachy color, but when Zach used his alchemic abilities to change it into a yellow sapphire, well Adrienne's eyes sparkled like there was no tomorrow.

"Oh my..." she was breathless. "That's amazing!" She turned to Zach and smiled. "You're amazing... wow!" She reached a hand up to the stone carefully and brushed her hand against it. It was real and Zach had made it real. She chewed on her lower lip thoughtfully and then shone her light around on the ground. She needed a stone with a semi-sharp point, one that could at least pick out the sapphire. Adrienne found one that would suit her purposes and picked it up carefully.

She began working on the sapphire, chipping away at the rock surrounding the yellow gemstone until it broke free. Thankfully it wasn't embedded very deeply. The rest of their afternoon was spent in the cave and afterwards, in town. It was a perfect day for an outing, after all and Adrienne wanted to make the most of it with Zach. She hoped that he had as much fun with their day as she did.
