Chris & Hayate : Glamour with a vampire
Who: Chris and Hayate
Where: Hayate's cottage
When: Before sunset, September 20, 2007
What: Chris visits Hayate (again) with a different look

It was a gorgeous night for a walk in Chris's opinion, and an even better night to visit her favorite vampire. The young human girl had spent the evening in town wandering about the shops aimlessly. She hadn't been shopping for anything in particular and she didn't have any specific plans. She had just been bored back at the forest cottages and decided that she needed fresh air.

It wasn't until she had reached the magical supplies shop did the girl find anything interesting. "A magical potion to change hair color? Are you sure?" There was a doubtful look on the girl's face as she crossed her arms at the shopkeeper. The kind man smiled and held out the small, yellow vile toward her silently urging her to try the concoction.

"As sure as I am alive!" He assured her with a kind grin.

And so the girl took the vile and downed the contents. It might not have been a very smart thing to do in hindsight. Chris didn't know if the old man was dangerous or if the potion would be poisonous to her. She didn't think anyone in Elysium would want to harm her and she trusted the shopkeeper's words. And sure enough Chris's golden locks began to turn into a deep shade of brown. The girl squealed out loud, bouncing on her toes as she thanked the man profusely.

"Now remember, it'll only last for a few hours," he reminded her as Chris bounded out of the shop and toward the cottages. She had to share her 'new' hair with Hayate and get his opinion. She rushed toward the familiar cottage and knocked on the door for a moment before she burst in. "Hayate! Lookit at my hair!" She looked around for the vampire and blinked when she didn't spot him right away. She turned on her spot and placed her hands on her hips and sighed out loud. "Well where did he go?" she muttered dejectedly as she blew a strand of hair away from her eyes.

For the past few days, Hayate's mood had greatly improved for a number of reasons. His mind was less scattered thanks to his encounter with Kaiya. Indulging in one of his old vices as usual, he found a temporary relief and peace of mind. It would last for however long it would last, but for now it was enough to get his mind refocused on the things that were important. All of his worries became constructive decisions. He needed to lay low, avoid glamouring himself in a certain way, and keep an eye out for a few familiar and unwanted around faces his person. Most of all, he needed to keep his eyes on Chris. The encounter with Dante, though it no longer rattled his senses, still put Hayate on edge. Realistically, the vampire did not trust nor believe that things failed to go on in Elysium unchecked by the council. He knew for a fact many things escaped their knowledge, having committed many of them himself.

While he had not been expecting Chris's visit today, Hayate was nearby in his cottage when she burst in through the front door. She didn't see him, however, and his brow furrowed in a curious but interested manner as he heard her mention something about her hair. Hidden from sight where he currently stood in comparison to her, Hayate had a view of her back and saw the brunette locks that now topped her head. The vampire observed them curiously, tilting his head to the side. Well, that was new.

A wicked smirk took form on his face, and Hayate stepped forward quietly, his feet not making a sound against the carpet. Chris stood there for a moment long enough for Hayate to creep up behind her. Despite how out of character it seemed, his next reaction to the young girl was a natural one that had budded out of him over the last few days as his personality became more alive and cheerful around her again. "Ha!" Hayate said aloud, close to her ear, as his hands grabbed her sides and tickled her for a brief moment. It was enough to startle her and perhaps earn a high-pitched squeal, a thought which made the vampire grin with amusement.

His hands lowered down her sides to rest comfortably around her middle. Hayate did not pull her towards him, though, and distance remained between their bodies.

Chris did squeal very loudly when Hayate's hands grabbed her sides. Her whole body jumped from the prank and she turned on her heel to face the vampire. "Oh you're such a brat!" She declared with an amused look on her face as she swatted at him playfully. Chris started to poke him in the stomach in retaliation even though she knew it wouldn't elicit any response. "It's so not fair that you're not ticklish," she pouted before she withdrew from her attack.

Shifting gears quickly Chris focused her attention on her hair once more. "I went to the magical supplies shop today but I wasn't looking for anything in particular, y'know, and the guy at the shop gave me a potion for my hair and I drank it and it changed my hair color!" Her fingers threaded through the long strands in glee. "Isn't it awesome! I wonder if there are other colors I could change it to?" She tapped her finger thoughtfully on her chin as she tried to imagine how she would look with red hair, or black, or even something like blue or purple!

She looked at him a bit warily now and took a step closer to him, her hands grabbing at his shirt in a childlike manner. "Do you like it?"

He grinned at her when she whirled around and attempted to exact revenge, and he kept a straight, albeit smirking, face as she poked him in the stomach and hoped for a response. She wasn't going to get one unless he faked one, because he unlearned many physical reactions a long time ago. Disassociating mind from body for so long had a profound effect upon him and left him without the ability to feel smaller pains to his body, which somehow included tickling. Hayate shook his head at her. "Of course I'm not," he said. "If I was ticklish, you'd have revenge — and that's against the rules."

Her story about the man at the shop struck a nerve in Hayate, though he replied without a strong tone to his voice. He kept it smooth to not alarm Chris. "You shouldn't drink random things from strangers," he said, almost as if he was her father giving her the talk about strangers. A smile crossed his features, though, especially since she liked it. It was something different on her, and new, but the vampire was not sure what to think of it. He brushed his hand over her hair. "Do you know how long it will last?" Hayate inquired, mostly out of curiosity.

Instead of answering her question, Hayate chose to reveal something to her. He leaned in as to whisper, though his voice only lowered a notch or two. "Don't tell anyone, but I'm going to show you a secret," he told her, and he leaned back again to close his eyes for a moment. His hair began to change color, growing dark — almost black but not quite — and lengthening slightly. When he opened his eyes, a smile rested on his face. "I have a little trick for that, too."

Chris looked at Hayate when he warned her about taking things from strangers. She looked down sadly, much in the way a daughter would look after being reprimanded by her father. "But he was nice..." she offered up before he asked his next question about the color. She chewed on her lower lip before replying. "He said only a couple of hours but that's better than nothing. Besides, I wouldn't want anything permanent. It would ruin my hair!"

Her eyes widened when he mentioned a secret, but not as wide as when his hair began to change color and grow longer. She let out a soft "aaahhh", her mouth gaping open as he changed right in front of her eyes. She reached her hand up to his hair to touch at the dark strands. "That is so freaking awesome," she said as she took a step closer. "I wish I could do that." The statement made the girl realize that she didn't have any powers or that there was anything remotely special about her. A crestfallen look overtook her face though she tried to smile through it.

"Sooooo..." She turned away from him though she had grabbed a hold of his hand and started to walk toward the couch in the sitting room. "What should we do today? Well I mean tonight since it's almost nighttime..."

Anyone could be give off the appearance of being nice without possessing the inherent trait. Hayate knew that because he was one of them, and he knew not to trust a pleasant attitude without knowing the person inside and out. He chose not to say anything else about it that sounded negative, picking instead to give her the idea of at least being wary. "I only want you to be safe," he said. "Next time, think about it first. I'm not saying there are bad people here. I just worry." He did not pretend to be an ignorant and happy teenager anymore, not as he had originally planned to do with Chris. The plan found itself on an altered course, and Hayate did not put on a face for her. However, if they ever found themselves around others in public, he would no doubt put on a face and an act.

Hayate smiled at her. "A few hours? So, you'll be brunette until tomorrow morning." The color made her look older, though Hayate was not sure why. Darker hair usually gave a younger person a more mature appearance, though it often did not make a difference in the looks of someone beyond their teens.

Watching her reaction to his particular brand of magic, he could not keep the pleasant quirk out of his lips. Her fingers touched his hair, a soft look of amazement in her eyes. He did not understand her statement, however, and tilted his head to the left. "But you have," he said, reaching out to take some of her hair into his hand and pulling it forward so that the brown locks came into her view. "Your hair is brown when it was only blonde just before, and you didn't have to dye it to get it that way." Hayate saw the change in her disposition, though, and he was not happy with it. He wanted to change it back.

As she led him towards the couch, Hayate let go of his glamour and allowed his hair to fall back into its natural state made of unruly waves of bleached blond hair. His roots were already beginning to show. He chose to bleach and tone his hair himself, since holding a blond glamour day in and day out was too much.

Instead of answering her question, he had one of his own. "Is something bothering you?" Hayate asked, taking a seat on the couch.

Chris appreciated that Hayate wanted to keep her safe. It made her adore him that much more since he cared about her. Or at least that's the impression that Chris had. Hayate had a way of making the girl feel special, much more than she actually was. She hated to think that she worried him, though, and she plastered on a smile and bright eyes when she answered his question.

"Nope! I'm great now that I'm here with you!" She wrapped her arms around his body and squeezed tight and made a high-pitched squee-ing sound as if she were really happy. And she was always happy when she was near him. She shifted on the couch and lied down so that her head was on his lap. Chris looked up at him with a smile, her now brown hair cascading across his lap. She had taken a hold of his hand to hold it and play idly with his fingers.

"I wanna do something... god I wish there was music to listen to. Oh then we could dance!" Chris smiled up at Hayate. "You would dance with me, wouldn't you?"

Hayate wanted to keep her safe for his own selfish reasons and from everyone but himself. At least, that was what he told himself about the matter. As for how this would really turn out in the end, there was no amount of predicting or star-gazing by the centaurs or witches that could reveal the truth. It was a dangerous relationship, built on dangerous reasons, and they were sinking themselves deeper into it of their own accord.

For one brief moment, Hayate thought it interesting how she never once asked his true age. As a vampire, he could've been anywhere from one hundred to one thousand, but she never asked out loud. He wondered if the thought ever ran through her head and she held it back by biting her tongue, though biting her tongue was not one of Chris' strong suits. He found himself actually smiling at her words, his questions parting from his mind at her assurance, even if it was false.

She laid her head in his lap, and Hayate's free fingers played with her sprawled hair as she played with his other hand. It was strange, some part of him registered, and yet nice. Was this how humans felt when they had children? Idly entertained by everything and anything, no matter how different it was from their normal routine?

The vampire smiled down at her given her question. "Maybe," he said, arching an eyebrow. "That depends on the dancing. I only know certain kinds."

Selfish or not, Chris enjoyed Hayate's protectiveness and in a way she too was very protective of him. She absolutely loathed every time Charlie said negative things about him. Chris would always immediately go on a tirade against her brother, chastising him for being a closed-minded jerk and how she never wanted to talk to him again. Of course, never didn't last very long and the twins would end up on good terms once more, but that didn't mean that Chris was going to take Charlie's bad-mouthing.

Chris never once romanticized the vampire's nature. She knew they were natural killers, knew that if the bloodlust ever got too bad for Hayate to bear that she would probably get bitten one day. Chris knew that vampires oftentimes had violent streaks and not all of them were tortured souls as Anne Rice portrayed them at times. The young girl knew these things of vampires and yet she continued her relationship with Hayate.

The girl made something of a soft purring sound when Hayate played with her hair. She liked having her hair played with and Hayate's touch was always so gentle that it made the sensation that much better. It was like how a parent would play with a child's hair, and yet Chris didn't think of Hayate that way. She didn't really think of him as an adult or even as a teenager. His age didn't matter to the girl and it never entered her mind as strange as that was. Most people would have thought about things like that, but not Chris. Hayate was Hayate, and it didn't matter whether he was fifteen or five-hundred.

His answer about dancing brought a smile to her face. "Oh you can show me how to dance!" There was excitement in her voice, so much that her eyes twinkled with it. "C'mon," she said as she sat upright. She was sitting next to him on the couch and she had scooted close enough to him so that she could rest her head on his shoulder. "Please?" She begged and looked over at him with her best puppy dog eyes, the ones that nobody could resist, not even a vampire.

His fingers curled themselves idly around her locks of dark hair, watching as they unfolded quickly and fell back into his lap when he lifted his hand slightly above her. She seemed so comfortable in his company like this, and Hayate was oddly relaxed and at ease more than usual. He wondered if it was the utter comfort she expressed around him that brought this reaction out in him. Most people were fooled by his act, or they sensed the truth of what he was beneath the surface. Chris wasn't ignorant of what he could do. She had offered her own neck to him, allowing him to drink of her blood. Still, she laid in his lap as peacefully as this without a care against him for his nature and capabilities.

The young girl was not afraid of him, nor was she fooled by a lie. He had no reason to act out against her. Though she had been prey when he had first lain eyes on her, those things had changed with the time he spent around her. One could not be both prey and a willing recipient. It was one or the other, and Chris had no fear of him. Even as his hand smoothed over the expanse of her long hair, she merely laid in his lap with a happy expression upon her face. It told the vampire all that he needed to know about her, and he not ask anymore unnecessary questions.

Oh, what had he started now? Chris say upright and leaned her head onto his shoulder, begging him to teach her how to dance. He turned his head towards her, matching her gaze with his own eyes and wondering what to say to her request. "You want to learn how to dance?" he asked, realizing he had never taught someone how to dance before. He knew different ones from all across the globe, not that he danced very much most of the time. Only if the scenery called for it, and it helped him to blend in with the locals. Hayate became a master of blending in with the crowds, and he often picked up certain tricks to aid in his quest to appear more like one of them than someone else much different.

"That depends on what you want to learn," he said with a playful smile. "What do you have in mind?" If she didn't have anything in particular in mind, maybe they could start with something simple and work their way through the list.

Chris jumped up from her seat, and held a hand out to Hayate to pull him to his feet. She didn't know how to dance, not if you counted jumping around like a monkey dancing, and most people didn't. She knew the basic side-to-side slow dance step, and the swaying that people did, but she didn't think that was real dancing either. Chris pondered his words, not knowing what she wanted to learn since she didn't know anything about formal dancing at all.

"Oh, I dunno," she answered with her lower lip pressed in between her teeth. "How about a slow dance, like the waltz or something? That should be easy, right?" She tapped her chin thoughtfully, and looked up toward the ceiling. "How about..." she drew out the word to indicate that she was thinking. "How about you pick?" A sheepish grin formed on her face, and she pulled herself close to Hayate to rest her forehead against his shoulder. "I'm sorry I'm so indecisive."

Hayate stood up from the couch, taking Chris by the hand to urge her to stand up with him. He led her out to the middle of the floor, which was clear of any objects that could get in their way. Straightening his back, Hayate took one of her hands into his and placed his other hand upon her waist. There was at least a foot in between them for paying attention to their steps whenever he asked her to look down and watch her feet to memorize how to move them. "Then, we'll do something formal and simple first," he said to her, and a trace of a small smile on his face.

They spent the rest of the evening going through the basic steps of a few formal dances. Teaching an art to someone else brought on an interesting feeling for Hayate akin to accomplishment. Chris was an apt pupil, and she had an interest in what she was doing. It always helped to have the initial interest if anybody was going to learn anything at all.

As he twirled her around the room, the cottage filled with echoing laughter from an evening well spent on dance lessons.
