Sunday: September 16, 2007
Who: Mitsuko, Frar and Fror
When: Morning
Where: Helicharis
What: Investigative Mitsuko goes looking for answers

There wasn't much evidence leading to Frar and Fror, the dwarves who had created a potent ale. But something about the story had piqued Mitsuko's curiosity. She'd always done her best work on gut instinct, so she decided that would probably work even when she was working for the law and not breaking it.

She had been a little thrown off by the strange gift from Irei, but she quickly recovered. After seeing Logan off, she'd gotten dressed for her questioning. She didn't know if the dwarf brothers would be attracted to a Kitsune, but... Ah, hell, MItsuko thought. Who wouldn't be attracted to a Kitsune?

Mitsuko had always used her good looks to her advantage. Getting things she wanted. People were always so much more willing to talk to a pretty face. Of course, Mitsuko had more than just a pretty face, which she was showing off. She wore a white loose knit top, which slid off her shoulders and a pair of high-cut short, showing off her long legs. With a pair of large sunglasses, she looked very casual, yet very sexy as well. The pair wouldn't be able to guess she was on the prowl for information.

Mitsuko sauntered in to Helicharis. It was a purposeful walk, her hips swinging and tail wagging slightly. It was the type of walk she usually employed when trying to atttract a target for thievery. It was surprisingly to Mitsuko how similar investigating crime was to committing it.

She came to a stop in front of a dwarf. She smiled saucily as she removed her sunglasses. "I'm looking for Frar and Fror, the dwarves everyone's talking about." She licked her lips slowly, seductively. "I hear they are quite talented with brewing ale."

The dwarf looked up at the lil' lady and gave her a noticeable double-over. It was similar to once-over, only his eyes swept over her body twice. Much, much thinner than his usual, but a looker was a looker and he was looking. "Well, hmm hmm, hello there, Misses," he said in a deep baritone voice. It rumbled throughout his chest. "Ya lookin' for Frar and Fror, are ya? Sounds like ye be the partyin' type of lass," the dwarf added with a chuckle, looking her over again.

He leaned in towards her with an almost conspiratorial look to his face as he looked from left to right and right to left slowly before settling his gaze back on her. "I know where t'find 'em," he told her in a hushed tone as he looked away and down the road, as if he was afraid someone would hear him, " . . . but it 'quires a kiss." The dwarf wiggled his eyebrows and leaned his bearded cheek towards her, puffing out his cheeks. He might as well make the most of it and get a kiss while she was asking!

Mitsuko rolled her eyes slightly-- discreetly-- at the dwarf who was leering at her. She would have been a bit more accepting of it if it was Frar or Fror, but she was sure with her attitude if he was one of them, he would be quick to take credit for it. "It's very nice to meet you." She smiled. "Yeah. I do like a good party." She pursed her lips slightly as she allowed him to look over her.

Bending over slightly so she was more on level with him, Mitsuko smiled slightly. "Do you now, huh?" She put her hands on her slender hips. "Well, I really want to know where they are." She pressed her lips to the dwarves bristly cheek. She gave him a brief kiss before pull back. "All right." She cocked her head as she looked down at the dwarf. "Now you got what you wanted. It's time to give me what I want."

After she had given him a peck on cheek, he chuckled beneath his breath. His chest rumbled with his quiet laughter. "No need t'get impatient, lass," he said with a mischievous smile. His dark eyes sparkled with merriment. "We dwarves are men of our word," the dwarf assured her. Finally, he looked over his shoulder in a specific direction, his finger pointing outward. "Ye can find 'em in the dwarven caves t'the north. Henrek's kingdom." Specifically, the dwarf was not sure where in the underground kingdom they were, but they had retreated back to the caves to finish making more of their specially brewed ale for the upcoming festival.

"It's a long journey, lass," he warned her with raised bushy eyebrows. "Ye might want ta'take a steed. They left town t'other day. Back to the caves. Said they were makin' more ale for the festivities." He gave another low chuckle, amused by how well their ale had done himself. "They did a'good with t'at ale, I tell ya." He nodded his head to himself. "It'a be a big hit wit' the festival!"

As soon as she got the answer from the dwarf, Mitsuko pulled herself back to full height and gave the dwarf a small smile. "Thanks." She gave him a salute and was off and running. She was single-minded now. There were things she had planned to do that day.... Such as the grape-crushing and wedding, but it looked like she would miss all of that if she had to go to the Northern Caves.

Mitsuko went to the stables and found a horse. It took time to tack the horse. She didn't do much riding, although she had some experience. One of the men she'd scammed owned horses. She had even attended Belmont along with him. True, she could have transformed into her fox form, but she wouldn't have been that much faster and she would have been exhausted by the time she got the caves.

Mounting the horse and giving it a light kick, Mitsuko went off on the ride towards Henrek's kingdom. She gripped the saddle and bridle tightly, bringing the horse quickly to gallop. She wanted to arrive as quickly as possible.

There was only one thing on Mitsuko's mind. Clearing her name. Yes, she'd been let go, but she didn't feel she was proven innocent. She needed to find who had really done it.

The more she was following this hunch, the more right it felt to her. This was what she was supposed to do.

Mitsuko came to a stop at the Northern Caves. She got off the horse and gave the trusty steed a pat on the nose. "Thanks. Sorry about riding you so hard." She gave him a carrot and lashed him a tree. "I'll be back soon."

She smoothed down her hair and strode to the entrance of the cave. She began inside. She only walked for a bit when she came to a wall. She frowned deeply and cocked her head. "Ara?" She scowled. "He tricked me! Baka Amanojaku! Nante hidoi hito!"

She was about to continue her tirade of Japanese, when the wall suddenly lit up. MItsuko gave a jump, nearly falling back. She managed to maintain her composure and remained on her feet. She slowly read the words that had illuminated. "Dwarven lords request of thee the pleasure of your company. But to pass you must decree the answers to these riddles three."

She sighed deeply. "Oh fuck."

Translation

Ara? = Huh?
Baka Amanojaku! = Idiot Amanojaku
(Mitsuko is equating dwarves with a diminutive Oni from Japanese folklore)
Nante hidoi hito! = What a jerk!

The letters on the wall began to fade away only to be replaced by new letters, ones that formed the first of three riddles that the kitsune would have to answer in order to pass the gates. Slowly the letters formed glowing words that read:

All people have different views of me,
My ways are steeped in trickery.
From ancient times to modern day,
I do what I need to get my way.
I may be true on certain days,
But other times I lead astray.
I may be red or black or white,
But no matter my color I always come out at night.

The next riddle would not appear until she had answered the first correctly. However, if she answered incorrectly Mitsuko would have to face the consequences.

Mitsuko furrowed her brow, thinking about the clue she had just read on the wall. She read it out to herself slowly. "Dammit, I hate riddles," she murmured softy. Just how the hell was she supposed to know the answer to this? She sucked when it came to things like clever words. Especially since those clever words weren't in her native tongue.

But as she read over the riddle again, things started to click into place. Oh, they had to be joking! Were they making fun of her or something? Did they know she was here?

"Kitsune desu!" she proclaimed. "I mean... A fox!"

The letters lit up brightly as if to say she was correct, before they faded away into darkness. The girl had answered one riddle correctly, and she only needed to answer two more to pass through the gates. The next one came shortly thereafter, letters glowing against the darkened stone:

In youth people follow me,
With age they change their destiny.
I am stout and true, I remain the same,
But people doubt me more each day.
I can make your promises come true,
If only you would trust in me to follow through.
I am ever present and my worth has no cost,
But neglect me and in time even I will be lost.

Mitsuko read out the next clue. She read it out once. Twice. A third time. She blinked and gaped at it for a long time.

She then stamped her foot and went off on a profanity-laddened tirade. "What the hell is this? I just want to talk to those damn dwarves! And you're making me jump through all of these goddamn hoops! I have better things to do with my time than answer stupid riddles all day!"

Mitsuko crouched on the ground and put her head in her hands. "Give me a minute... Let me think.... Friendship? No, that's not right.... Something we have a lot of when we're young but.... Hmmmm...."

Finally, she came up with it. Something that seemed so much easier when she was a kit as opposed to now. "Is it hope?"

The second riddle vanished when she answered it correctly, only to bring up one, last riddle. A simple one, at least to the Dwarves that were controlling it.

What is in my pocket?

There was nothing else. No other words to glean a clue from. Just a simple question, one that the sneaky fox could not really answer.

Mitsuko looked at the riddle. She blinked at the wall, wondering if she had read it right. She then stamped her foot. "Oh, FUCK you! Just fuck you up the ass with a rusty tent pole! Just how the FUCK am I suppose to be able to answer that?" She pounded her fists against the wall. Her anger was so great, the illusion of lightning was emanating from them without her intentionally using her powers. "Open up! Right now!"

When the wall wouldn't budge, Mitsuko began to rant in Japanese. She fell to the ground, pouting. "You're going to be sorry when I get my hands on you," she whispered under her breath.

Despite the ranting aimed at the wall, nothing else happened. The glowing etches on the surface of the stone, however, began to fade until they completely disappeared from sight. The kitsune was left with nothing but a solid wall blocking her way and no entrance into the dwarven kingdom. It hadn't been the intention of the dwarf to get her stuck here. In fact, Frar and Fror sometimes took up posts at the dwarven wall to taunt those who answered any riddles incorrectly. As dwarven guards, it was their duty to occasionally watch the wall (if they weren't fooling around elsewhere).

Frar and Fror weren't anywhere near the wall today, though. No entrance was granted, and the kitsune would have to wait for another day when she could find the two dwarves and question them. Hopefully, it wouldn't be too much longer before she could come face to face with them.
