Who: Emily & Echo Planck, Chris & Charlie Jung, Irei Arakaki, Sascha Connolly, and any visitors!
When: Morning
Where: The Plancks' cottage and Irei & Sascha's bungalow
What: An ominous tune lingers in the air despite the sunny and cheerful morning.

The early morning hours started off as peacefully as any other. Birds were greeting the new day with their song, the lake monster was swimming happily in the water, and Helicharis was beginning to bustle with activity. And yet despite the seemingly happy atmosphere something was amiss. It was hard to pinpoint exactly, possibly because the occurrence was so isolated that no one noticed unless they happened by the places on accident.

How often did citizens travel by the waterfront bungalows or the forest cottages anyway? Would they have noticed or even paid attention to the dolls that were outside one particular bungalow? Would anyone think to look inside the darkened window of a nearby cottage to see the dinner party that was already underway? No… no one would look or pay attention. And yet perhaps they should have.

OOC Note - There will be sub-threads for each location and those involved will need to reply to the appropriate sub-thread. Please note that these ARE open for anyone passing by or just visiting the residents in each location. Remember, have fun with it and do whatever you want with it! There is no specific outcome or reaction that needs to be had ^^

There hadn’t been a sound in the house the entire night. Quiet as a mouse wouldn’t have even covered how eerily silent it was in the quaint cottage. A mouse wouldn’t have even stepped a foot near the scene that was left inside for the family of four. Slipped beneath each door was a small, three-by-five card that served as an invitation to the humans. Bon Appetit it said. The bright red letters couldn’t have been overlooked by anyone and hopefully it was enough to tweak their interest. If not, the odor of the entire scene would have woken them up eventually.

There, on the Planck’s dining table, was the set up for a magnificent meal. There were four settings, each with a medium-sized raccoon sitting upright. They weren’t moving though each of them was “looking” down at the dinner plate in front of them. It was full to the brim with their own entrails, spilled from their open bellies. The animals were already dead but they had been propped into their sitting postures by carefully placed dowels. A string of intestine hung limply from the mouth of one, while another had its small claws grasped around the heart that had been yanked from its body. The third raccoon was posed in a way that made it look like it was lapping up a bowl of its own blood, and the last raccoon had one of its eyeballs in its mouth.

It was indeed a gruesome sight, one that would no doubt leave the residents of the house in a state of panic. That was the intention, after all. Panic and mayhem amidst the serene surroundings of the forest.

Chris thought she had heard someone stirring around in the lower level of the cottage, but it was just the house settling and the wood creaking. While she wasn't a light sleeper for some reason she just couldn't fall back asleep today. She stretched her arms overhead and quietly slipped out of bed. Chris didn't want to wake Echo up for no reason even though she knew she'd be lonely without someone to talk with over breakfast. She had almost reached the door when she noticed a small note card on the floor. She bent over to pick it up and read it quietly. "Bon Appetit." Huh? Wasn't that French? Didn't it mean something like 'good meal' or something? The girl wasn't sure but it did remind her that she was hungry.

Without a second thought she dropped the note card on the dresser and exited the room. She stopped by the bathroom first to brush her teeth and wash her face - an essential part of any teenage girl's morning routine - and then tied her hair back in a ponytail before she headed down the steps. She was humming quietly to herself, silently planning her day and what she wanted to do. It wasn't until she was almost at the bottom stair did she notice the odd smell that permeated throughout the lower floor. Chris winced and squeezed her nose shut.

"Smells like something died," she said with a grossed out face. She turned the corner to head to the kitchen before she stopped dead in her tracks. There on the dining table were raccoons - no, dead raccoons. Dead raccoons with their guts spilled out everywhere and posed to make it look like they were eating their own guts. Her hand went to cover her mouth as nausea overtook her senses. She felt like she was going to puke. But she didn't and the only thing that left her mouth when she opened it was an ear-piercing scream.

Emily had just awoken and slid out of bed, putting on her slippers and walking to the dresser to pick the clothes to wear for the day. Today was the bridal luncheon for Amada and she needed a good dress for it. She remembered the orange dress she wore a while back and thought that would be the perfect cheery outfit for the occasion. Just as she draped the dress over her bed, she heard Chris scream. Immediately, Emily rushed to the door, pulled it open and hurried to the kitchen where she saw Chris standing. It was pointless to ask what was wrong because she saw what the matter was when her gaze focused past the teenager and onto the carnage at the table.

It was horrible, of course, but the first thought that popped into her mind was someone broke into our house to do this. Locks were not enough to keep out wrongdoers and Emily was lucky whoever broke in hadn't hurt Chris. Had they done anything to Charlie and Echo? Her silent question was answered by the sleepy form of her daughter walking down the stairs and entering the kitchen as well.

"What's the mat--" Echo stopped mid-sentence as she stared at the scene. "Oh Lord." She turned her head away to shield her eyes and crossed her arms over her stomach like she always did when she felt sick.

Emily had to be strong for the sake of the children, removing the hair band from her wrist and tying her hair back in a ponytail before walking to the counter and searching for rubber gloves and a plastic bag. It was fortunate she brought along so many large, black plastic garbage bags from the States. "Chris, Echo, please get me the cleaning supplies from the closet," she said and hoped that the task would keep their minds occupied momentarily. "We also need to open the windows and doors to get rid of the smell." The smell turned her stomach, but she couldn't let that distract her. Someone had broken into her house. They could come again and murder all of them in their sleep. She had to talk to someone about better locks, or maybe Malcolm and Ide could help her set up an alarm system.

Though it was difficult to see, her hands were shaking just a little as she put on the rubber gloves.

Charlie ran down the stairs with his hair sticking up in every direction. He had heard his sister's scream and the sound was so alarming that he immediately worried for her safety. "Chris are you al-" he began only to be cut off by the sight in the dining room. "Holy shit!" He blurted out loud without noticing that Emily was in the room. He moved to stand next to Chris and put an arm around her shoulders.

"You all right?" He asked while giving her a squeeze. She looked up at her brother and nodded. Though Chris was still mad at him over the Hayate thing, this was a moment to put aside that anger and to focus on other things. Charlie looked over at Echo and gave her a smile and called her over to stand next to him. Though he liked Echo, Chris was his sister and he had to take care of her first.

Emily had then asked the girls to get cleaning supplies from the closet and Charlie stepped forward to stop them. "Wait! Shouldn't we like, leave this for evidence?" Chris looked over at her brother and then at Emily and nodded. "We so should. All the cop shows on tv say not to touch the crime scene! We need to go get help!"

Charlie nodded and then ran upstairs to his room to get the backpack of clothes that he toted around with him whenever he thought he might shift into a pronghorn. Chris watched her brother running up the stairs and knew what he was going to get. She stepped forward to talk to Emily and grabbed her hands. "We shouldn't touch it! I know it's super gross, but let me and Charlie go down to Town Hall and tell someone! They'll send someone here to take pictures or draw pictures or whatever they need to do! And then maybe they can like catch the person who did this! Oh oh! Maybe they can send an Elven guard to like stand watch around our house." That would be so cool if they did! she thought to herself just as Charlie came down the stairs.

He tossed the backpack to his sister and she caught it easily. And then just like that he shifted into a Pronghorn. Chris opened the door and then jumped on her brother's back and then looked back at Emily and Echo. "Don't worry, we'll be there and back in no time!" And with that Charlie dashed out of the house and toward the town. They had almost run into a guy that was standing on the front porch and all that Chris could do was yell "Sorry!" to him before they were out of sight.

Loki's knuckles had been raised and ready to knock on the door when it flung open and a deer with antlers was staring him down. Loki's eyes went wide and he leapt to the side to get out of the way, tripping over something and falling down onto his butt on the porch. He watched in amazement as the deer ran off with a young girl on its back. The girl called out 'sorry!', but Loki remained sprawled out on the porch with a stupefied look on his face. "Well, blimey," Loki said, slowly getting back to his feet. He brushed the dirt off his clothes, hoping to look decent for the Plancks when he had arrived and hoping that was still possible to pull off after he fell backwards onto their porch.

The muse had to stoop over to pick up his fallen boxed present. It was a gift he had brought back from the isle for Echo, something he had hoped she would really like. There was a foul scent traveling through the air from the inside of the cottage, though, and Loki's curiosity bubbled up to the surface as he waved a hand in front of his face to ward off the smell. What in the world was that stench?

Leaning over to look inside of house, Loki wondered if everything was alright. "Hello?" he called, hoping someone else was still there. After all, the girl had been talking to someone before she dashed off on the back of a deer. Now, what was a deer doing in the house? Loki was beyond confused. "Is 't all right to come in?" he called in a louder voice, still balancing the big box that contained his present to Echo in one hand out of sight from the doorway.

Emily had no choice but to wait for the twins to return. Reporting it was a good idea, but there might not be anything the Head Council could do. She watched as Chris and Charlie dashed for the door and sighed as she started to prepare some sandwiches for her and Echo's breakfast.

Echo in the meanwhile retreated to the sofa and curled up on it for a moment before she heard a familiar voice in the doorway. Turning around, she saw that it was Loki, like she thought. "Oh my gosh, Loki!" Echo leapt off the sofa and ran towards him to give him a large hug. He'd been away for a while and so much had happened that she had somewhat forgotten about him. "How've you been? What have you been doing? There's so much to catch up on, come on in!" She lightly grabbed his arm and tugged into the cottage.

Echo's cheerful exclamation was impossible to ignore and Emily left the kitchen to see Loki, a sight for sore eyes. "Hey, you," she said with a smile. "It's nice to see you again." She didn't have long before her daughter chatted away and she waited until there was a pause to say any more. "Sorry about the smell. Someone broke into our cottage and decided to litter our kitchen table with animal corpses." It wasn't the best time for visiting, but people couldn't choose when anything happened.

The muse hadn't expected how a lot could happen in the two weeks he had been gone, which proved true in his situation with Mits. Apparently, Elysium was a busy sort of place whenever he happened to skip town. It wasn't a happy thought, and one that Loki quickly banished. He hadn't come here for sad thoughts, after all; he came here to deliver a present!

As he peered through the doorway, he spotted Echo running towards him and grinned big. Loki stepped fully into view and held out his arms, his right hand still balancing the boxed present. "'Ello!" he shouted happily. Echo tackled him with a hug, and Loki managed to hug her back with one arm. "How you been since me trip away? Only two weeks, and it feels like forever!" He laughed at her own questions. "I've been good! Fightin' lots of evil beasts and workin' on me sword skills. Bodyguard duty is a lot of work," he added, raising his eyebrows for emphasis. He let Echo tug him into the cottage and spotted Emily. "'Ello!" Loki called to her as well, waving with his free hand.

He grinned. "It's nice to see more people again, that's for sure," Loki said with an accompanying nod. His expression turned shocked when he heard about the break-in, and Loki put down his present for Echo on the couch to hurry into the kitchen and see what Emily was talking about. "Bloody hell," he muttered, lifting up his arm to shield his nose. He turned back to Emily. "Someone broke in and did this? What the blimey for?" Though he seemed to be speaking more to himself than them. "Has someone been botherin' you lately?"

Emily could tell that her daughter wanted to ask Loki about his adventures in greater detail, but perhaps this was not the best time. Tension racked her mind and she was not sure how much conversation she could handle. The break-in had completely rattled her and made her sick to her stomach. At his question, she looked past him and was unable to speak for a few moments. "I don't know. We haven't done anything to anyone, I'm certain of it. I've been nice to everyone and then some goddamn person breaks into my house!" She had no idea who it was, and it just made her so angry that she was so helpless. Emily dropped the bottle of cleaning fluid she'd been holding and ignored it as it clattered to the floor, walking briskly to the bathroom in order to cool herself down.

"Mom never swears," remarked Echo, a worried frown appearing on her face. She'd have to reassure her mother later, but just then she caught sight of the present on the sofa. "Ooh, is the present for me or Mom?" She sat down, taking the box onto her lap and looking at it excitedly, always a sucker for gifts of any kind. Even if it wasn't for her, she still wanted to know what it was. Not too long afterwards, Emily returned and sat on the sofa next to Echo with her legs tucked underneath her.

The knowledge that some bloke had the rottenness to break into their cottage and do this made Loki angry for them. Although, anger never solved much of anything, and Loki had to think of a better way to help them handle the situation. The scene in the kitchen was disgusting and Loki shielding his nose with his arm. "Did anyone report this?" he asked aloud in a muffled voice, lowering his arm afterwards as he walked out of the kitchen. "We should report it and find the scum responsible, and I'll give 'im a good lesson he'll never forget . . . " Loki kept his voice calm, not wanting to rattle poor Emily up anymore than she already was now. It wasn't fair for them to have to deal with something like this, not fair at all in the muse's opinion.

"'Sall right," Loki said in response to Echo. "Your mum's just scared, is all," he tried to reassure her. Echo drew his attention back to the present, and Loki figured they might should take themselves outside for now. Some fresh air would do them all good. "Let's go out on the porch, yah?" Loki asked once Emily had sat down on the couch with them. He took up the present in his hands and led the way to the porch. "This," he announced in a much more happy voice, hoping it would take away the gloom of the current situation, "is a present for me dear Echo!"

Loki took a seat on the wooden planks of the porch and put the present down in front of Echo's feet. He waited for Emily to join them before he narrated his 'suspenseful' story. "There I was," he said in a low, story-telling voice, "walking through the overgrown brushland of Tol'hith until the sand of the beach appeared beneath me feet . . . "

Emily also felt that anger didn't solve anything, but there were times like these when she was so angry some of it just spilled out of her. She nodded at his question. "Chris and Charlie - they're the twins staying with us now - have gone to report it, and I hope they can actually do something about this!" It was important that she had faith in a higher power having control, being able to help her. His words made her feel a little better although she still was very tense. She hoped Loki would show whoever it was the full extent of his wrath because if he didn't, she had to take charge. There were some things people did not do, and that was endanger her children.

After her mother sat on the sofa, Echo happily relocated with Loki to the porch and sat across from him with her excitement running high despite what had happened. She wanted to hear what he had to say, because she could picture him walking through, bending slightly in a hunting pose. "Go on," she said, eyes fixed on him as she waited for every word of his.

Unfortunately, the older Planck was not as enthralled with his story, as Emily still worried about what to do. She worried her lip and played with a couple strands of her hair as she half-listened to what he said. It was good to see him again and she really shouldn't be rude, drifting off into thought like this. Had exploring been difficult for him? Maybe the adventure he was about to tell them was one of many he'd had, risking his life. She hoped he didn't do anything that dangerous - worrying about three people at once was bad enough.

" . . . And suddenly, there appeared a frightful creature that shot fire high up into the air at least as high as me!" Loki gestured with his hand far above his head. "I drew out me sword and engaged it in a wild battle. I thought it would never end as I dodged its flames and struck at it with me sword! It was me or it, and I wasn't about to lose. Finally, I delivered it a final blow, and the creature fell dead to the ground! It was a fierce and vicious thing, but I finished it off. Luckily, I only got singed by its fire."

Pushing out the box to Echo, Loki motioned for her to open it up. "It felt a shame to leave this lovely shell of its to waste. I wouldn't ever kill me one for sport, but I killed it defending me life against it. In the end, it gave me its armor. And, as a gift, I give it to you," Loki finished with a smile. Inside of the box itself and wrapped it cloth was a large tortoise-like shell with a deep orange tone to it and covered with what appeared to be roughly shaped, multi-colored jewels all over it. The creature itself was a magical creature, born with a crystal-encrusted shell. Each jewel held a different hue: some were blue, some were red, some were yellow, and some were green. Various other colors adorned it, and it looked like it could have been a large helmet made for a king.

"I hope you like it," Loki said. "It's a one-of-a-kind! I don't intend to go back to the isle for more, so you'll be the only one in all of Elysium with one! People aren't allowed to go to the isle without permission, so you don't have to worry about it startin' a trend," Loki assured them. He was certain Emily was against senseless violence, and he wanted her to feel comfortable about Echo receiving the gift. Loki wasn't sure what to do with a crystal-encrusted shell. Decoration seemed like the only use for it, and in his opinion, it was kind of girly with all of the jewels on it.

A frightful creature? Echo had difficulty imagining the easy-going Loki using a sword and killing anything, but that made it more exciting. "What did it look like? I didn't know you could use a sword! Could you teach me how to sword fight? That'd be so fantastic," she asked in a rush, not looking at her mom because she just knew there was a disapproving frown on her face. "I'm glad you only got singed! It must have been scary." He probably wasn't about to admit that he was frightened about facing a creature even if it was.

She opened the box and lifted the shell from it as she listened to him explain about the gift. It was so lovely with all the different colors of jewels on the outside and she ran her fingers over the rough texture. "Oh, thank you! It's beautiful!" she gushed and gave him a squeeze with an arm around his waist. "This is going to look wonderful in my room!" It was so large, it could have covered her entire face and added to its charm. "And it'll reflect rainbows when the light hits it just right..." Now she was determined to get him something pretty in exchange to say thank you because otherwise it wouldn't seem right.

When she heard that her gift was one of a kind and would remain that way, her smile only brightened. Well, didn't she feel important now? "I'm very honored. I can't believe this came from a real, honest and true animal. Magical creatures are so wonderful!" She sighed. "So beautiful too. Unicorns and centaurs and everything! Isn't magic awesome?" Needless to say, the gift more than made up for the awful discovery this morning. Emily remained troubled, lost in thought and Echo figured it would take a while for her to recover.

Loki mostly bumbled his way through fighting something that strongly resembled a vicious tortoise, but Echo didn't have to know that specific detail. "It was fast-moving, vicious thing that looked similar to a tortoise! It 'ad a big, snapping beak and shot out fire, though. Very mean creature," he added assuredly, nodding his head in affirmation of his own words. "O' course I can use a sword!" he countered with a grin. Loki looked over to Emily before returning his gaze to Echo. "Only if your mother says it's alright," Loki told her. The grin returned quickly, though. "Yep! Only got singed! It wasn't scary at all!"

Although, admittedly, Loki had been just a little bit scared, but he wasn't about to admit that either. It took away from the story in his opinion! Loki grinned when Echo announced it was beautiful. "You're welcome!" he said happily, glad she had liked the gift. "Oh, when the sunshine hits it, it glows like a million watts!" That was the best way to describe it. It looked dazzling in the sunlight with all of the jewels on it.

The muse nodded in agreement. Magical was a wonderful thing, yet at the same time it had its downsides. Like chimeras and manticores, creatures far more vicious and truly scary in comparison to the firecrackers he fought off. It was then that Loki noticed some people approaching in the distance, and he looked out at them. "'Ello there," Loki called out in greeting, wondering who they were and why they had come out here.

The Elven guards had left Town Hall as soon as Dylan had instructed them to do so, after the two young humans had reported the gruesome incident. They had ridden horses toward the forest cottages and only slowed down once they reached the residential area. It was a quick ride for the pair of guards, and they realized that they had to be fast in order to resolve the issue quickly. As soon as they were in the vicinity of the bloody mess, the Elven guards and their keen senses could pick up the scent of dead flesh. They also spotted a young man at the front door of the cottage and he greeted them in a friendly manner.

Dismounting their horses, the Elven guards walked up to the man and bowed crisply to him in unison. "Hello sir, we were sent here by Head Council member Dylan Uzoma. It was reported that there was an incident at this residence," spoke the elder of the two guards. They straightened their bodies and looked into the house. Though they could not see anything immediately, the smell from this distance was unmistakable. There was something definitely rotting inside and the two guards could only imagine what awaited them.

"We have been instructed to investigate the scene and to document an accurate account of what has taken place here. If you would excuse us, please." The two guards walked past Loki and into the house where they did meet the horrific sight. They could not imagine who or what in the world would do something so terrible to a family, but the guards would not stand for it. They immediately set to work, one guard detailing the scene as it was while the other checked for any evidence. They worked for more than an hour at the Planck's residence before they took care of the messy clean up. They would not allow the young mother or the child to do the work - this was something that peaceful humans (especially females) should not do, at least that was their opinion.

When the guards were finished with everything they bowed to Emily, Echo, and Loki before they departed from the residence. They rode their horses back to Town Hall and immediately reported what they witnessed to the Head Council before they resumed their duties within the city.

Irei and Sascha's Waterfront Bungalow - Open to Irei & Sascha, and any visitors

A sinister air lurked around the waterfront bungalow though the scene was much more subtle than what was left behind in the forest cottage. There was no blood or gory entrails to decorate this gift. Only dolls – three to be precise, each one set up in a very particular manner to relay a very particular message.

There was a ‘main doll’ hanging down from the roof in front of the main door. It was noticeably male with bright, blue buttons for eyes. The feedsack cloth was sewn in a way to show the partitions for the arms and legs, and each arm and leg was sewn at the end to keep the cotton filling inside. Sewn very crudely in the middle of the chest were three symbols that only one of the residents in house would recognize. The message was meant for him, after all. If he didn’t understand that, the other two dolls that were hanging by strings wrapped around their necks would have told given him the message loud and clear. Their eyes were nothing but red ‘X’s while their mouths were shaped in a way that displayed their shock. They were supposed to be dead, but more importantly was the fact that the main doll was the one who was stringing them up by their necks. He had killed them, or he would kill them.

However the message was taken one thing was clear – lives were in danger because they were associated with him.

Translation
The symbols on the doll are "ki", "sa" and "ma", which together spell "kisama", a historically formal way of saying "you". It has developed into a very hostile/rude way of addressing someone and clearly shows hostility and outrage from the speaker to the addressee.

Things had really been looking up for Sascha over the last few days. He was normally very reclusive at this time of year, but the interactions he'd had with several of his new acquaintances here in Elysium had helped ease some of his usual emotional strain. His second explorative excursion had also given him some private time to meditate and mellow out, and he'd returned to the bungalow the previous evening feeling physically and emotionally refreshed.

He awoke that morning to the sound of Sweeney's low-pitched whine right beside his ear, and it took a few moments before he was able to groggily push himself into a sitting position. He'd been incredibly exhausted after spending a good two and a half days exploring and rediscovering the parts of the haven he'd seen during his initial expedition; apparently he'd slept like a log, and it was with much difficulty that he tried to bring himself back into the waking world.

Sweeney's whine persisted, however, and he realized that she probably needed to take a trip outside to relieve herself after being cooped up in the bungalow all night. Yawning and rubbing his eyes tiredly, he stumbled toward the front door with his canine companion right at his heels. Her agitated whine quickly turned into a low-pitched keening sound as they neared the doorway, and Sascha frowned a bit in confusion. That wasn't the typical sound of Sweeney's oncoming "tinkle alert", and as he opened the door and stepped past the threshold onto the porch, he wondered what could possibly have gotten the dog so worked up first thing in the morning.

Then something coarse and vaguely damp with morning dew connected with his face, and he swatted the object away in surprise. What the fuck...?

Sascha blinked at the objects suspended in the air in front of him, narrowing his eyes slightly as he tried to make sense of the markings on the dolls. He knew enough to recognize the bright red lettering as Japanese characters, but he had more experience with the spoken language than the written form. A quick look at the strangely defining features of the two smaller figures and the blue button eyes of the main doll were enough to get the message across.

As Sweeney paced on the porch in front of him, Sascha could hear the stirrings inside the bungalow that signalled his roommate's approach. He reached up and poked curiously at the appendage marked by the red mass of cross-stitching on the lower portion of the large doll, and without bothering to turn around, he remarked loudly through the open door:

"So who have you gone and pissed off now?"

Irei was sitting up with his back up against the headboard. He had been up for a while now. He wished that he could sleep in on lazy days like Sascha was easily able to do, but the combination of habit and insomnia kept him from sleeping extended hours at any point in time. He had gotten a little sleep, but just enough so he could survive. He hadn’t dreamed of anything, unless it was darkness. He normally didn’t remember any of his dreams.

He had been sitting in his room, thinking. He sifted his weight slightly, and felt the dull pain in his shoulder from the still healing wound he had acquired that night at the tavern. He hadn’t been very active since that day aside from doing a few errands. Irei’s thoughts turned to the feelings of being forgotten or abandoned. Sascha had left him on Wednesday morning to commune with nature. Mitsuko had come to see him after it had happened. She had looked tired then. Perhaps her boyfriend was back now, and she was having a good time with him. He hadn’t seen Kaiya or Emily in a while.

“My popularity must be waning.” He chuckled to himself, when a shudder ran down along his spine. Irei opened his eyes as the ghost whispered words of warning in his ear. Something about the area around the bungalow wasn’t right. An oppressive feeling of malice seemed to hover in the air around the home he shared with Sascha and Sweeney. Irei swung his legs over the side of the bed and pulled on a pair of drawstring pants.

Irei rubbed the back of his neck. His shoulder was bandaged up to hide the wound that would scar up that part of his body, but otherwise he remained topless. He headed toward the front of the bungalow where he heard the sporadic shuffling of Sweeney’s clawed feet coming from the porch. So Sascha was awake. Sweeney must have threatened to piss in Sascha’s bed if he didn’t let her out.

He entered the main room, or living room, and listened to his own foot falls as he made his way to the front door where Sascha was speaking to him. Who had he pissed off now? Irei shrugged nonchalantly. “Who haven’t I pissed off? You know what a charming person I am.” He grinned slightly at his own joke.

He stopped short and the smile faded from his lips when Sascha moved out of his vision and revealed the hanging dolls. Blue buttons for eyes on one, and the other two were smaller, and hanging from the main one’s hands. The dolls were crudely made, and resembled something you’d see in a Hollywood movie dealing with voodoo. Somebody in Elysium must have an interesting habit.

“Is this someone’s sick idea of a joke?” He walked past Sascha to get outside. He ignored the panic dog and looked along both stretches of the beach. He knew he wouldn’t find anything, but he needed the closure to know there was nothing out there, anymore at least.

He walked back in, keeping his eyes on the doll and read the stitched in letters. “Ki-sa-ma... Someone’s threatening me?” He smiled darkly and crossed his arms. “This seems like a ridiculous way of doing it.”

Sascha watched Irei's reaction with much interest, glancing back and forth between his roommate and the dolls as he waited for the explanation that he knew would be forthcoming. Except...Irei hadn't actually said much aside from clarifying the translation of the characters stitched across the larger doll's chest. Even then, Sascha wasn't terribly familiar with the cultural or historical implications of the word, so the significance was lost on him.

"Threatening you?" Sascha knelt down on one knee and patted his thigh in a wordless gesture to Sweeney, who responded by laying her muzzle against his thigh and whining up at him as he stroked behind her ears comfortingly. "You don't sound too riled up about it. Who would want to threaten you, anyway?"

He glanced back up at the suspended figures, gingerly pushing himself to his feet again and leaning closer to examine the ominous little mobile. He looked over at Irei, curiously poking at the little white triangles of fabric adorning the head of one of the smaller dolls.

"This look familiar?" he questioned as he idly caressed the piece of twisted white cord protruding from the doll's backside in the semblance of a tail. "It's obviously supposed to mean something...well, maybe someone."

He had a feeling the both of them knew very well who that particular doll was meant to represent, even though Sascha had only met the pretty kitsune girl once or twice before; she had been the main reason Irei had ended up spending the night in a holding cell, after all. The other figure was less recognizable to Sascha, though he assumed it held some degree of meaning to his friend.

But it was the central figure that held the most interest for Sascha. "Is this supposed to be you?" he asked, tugging at one of the doll's legs and then flicking a blue button eye with his finger. "Can't really see the resemblance."

Irei shrugged his shoulders. “I’m not really sure. But then I don’t know of anyone who would walk around hanging gruesome dolls from other people’s doors.” He shook his head and watched as Sascha pointed out the smaller dolls hanging from the larger doll’s hands. He knew exactly who the smaller dolls were supposed to represent. A white fox, and a winged fae. “Ah, Mitsuko-chan, and Kaiya-chan.”

Irei’s eyes narrowed at the mention of the doll not looking like him. It was a crude little thing made out of what looked like burlap. It didn’t really looking like anyone. Who else with blue eyes would be connected with Mitsuko and Kaiya...

Hayate.

Irei’s eyes widened and his skin prickled with realization as he recalled the feeling of such death and pain hanging in the air all around that smaller man. He looked at Sascha. “Do you remember when I told you about that man who looked very much like that little Zach Kitano? He had blue eyes too. I wonder if the larger doll is supposed to be him. He has been very friendly around Kaiya, but I don’t know what Mitsuko has to do with him.” Irei looked a bit puzzled as he tried to make some sense of this new understanding.

He looked at Sascha again and noticed his confusion for the significance of the word kisama. Irei reached up and pulled the mobile down, snapping the string that held it up above their door. “Kisama...It is sort of similar to saying ‘you bastard’ in Japanese, or just a very impolite way of saying ‘you’.” He looked at the doll in his hand, letting the other two smaller dolls hang down each side.

“What I do not get is, that if this doll isn’t meant to be me, but the other blue eyed Asian man...Then why does this thing have ‘YOU’ written on it.” He looked at Sascha as if hoping to see some sort of answer in his friend’s face. Did it mean Irei was supposed to stop it, or was it just stating that it was his fault that it would happen?

Irei narrowed his eyes at the blue button–eyed doll and muttered in Japanese. “Stupid toy.”

Marit had spent virtually all of Friday reading her books which were all very enjoyable. She had hoped to see Mister Wyatt again, not only because she hoped he was truly interested in learning some Swedish, but so they could discuss the novels that they both had now read. But for all of the reading she did, Marit was naturally half of a fish and had spent the last month deep down in the lake. While she liked the prospects of her land life, one could not make such a transition in a few short days. Very early in the morning, before the sun rose, Marit slipped into the darkened lake and glided off to be amongst one of her dearest friends. In their way of communicating, there were no names that could be understood by those that were not of the aquatic sort, but Marit had decided to name him Charlie when speaking of him outside of the lake.

From the very earliest portion of the morning and after the sun rose, Marit and Charlie swam about the lake together in play. When he went off to get something to eat, the mermaid glided through the water across the front of the bungalows, one of which was her own. Curious of her neighbors, none of which she had met yet, she had moved closer to the little homes. Someone's dog was barking loudly, the pitch of it alerting Marit to be cautious. She did not think it was due to her presence, but to something else entirely. There did not appear to be anything lurking across the way nor was there anything in the water around her. A door opened, a person paused. Someone had angered another person or so that was the belief.

Marit was curious but knew that this was complete and total eavesdropping. It was rude and she should not be doing it. But there she was, just a few tail-flicks away from her neighbor's bungalow. Her face was above the water, blonde hair darkened from the water and floating on the surface.

Sweeney's loud whine had tapered off into mild whimpering as her daddy patted her and tried to soothe her lingering agitation, and once he'd returned his attention to Irei and the dolls, she reluctantly trotted off down the main pier to the shore to take care of business. After several minutes she shuffled back toward the bungalow where Sascha and Irei were still conversing, but as she drew closer to the porch, her ears perked up in curiousity.

A sound to her right had attracted her attention, and as she surveyed the expanse of water just beyond the edge of the bungalow, she caught sight of something bobbing along the surface. It took a few moments before her canine mind was able to make sense of the shape as something human-like.

There didn't seem to be anything threatening about the object, and as Sweeney moved closer to the edge of the pier, she lowered her head and gave a friendly chuff, tail wagging anxiously as she waited for the stranger to acknowledge her.

It had been awhile since she had seen a dog. Her first encounter with a dog was a bit frightening but very exciting all the same. Marit and her brother had gone closer to the surface of the lake in which they lived in Sweden and moved awfully close to the shore. She was age ten and had never seen such a creature before in her very young life. The dog was nice, too, as it paddled out after a stick of wood. Of course, one good experience did not mean that all dogs were nice and she had come across some unfriendly dogs, too. Marit stayed where she was until the four-legged creature came to the edge of the pier.

The woman did not bob as other people did when they were treading water. Her stance was more graceful and natural. With a tilt of her head at the dog's chuff, Marit smiled some and moved a little closer. "Hello," she said very soft, perfectly well for a dog to pick up but quieter than what her human companions could notice. Arms rose from beneath and stretched out over the water in efforts to look a little more human and a little friendlier, too. It was only when she reached up to the edge of the pier with her hands that she looked a little strange. All of her fingers were webbed together. But that would not make a difference in how nicely she could pet the dog if she--the dog--were so inclined to allow it.

There was a time, long, long ago as a pup, when Sweeney might have been frightened by such an unusual encounter. She'd spent the first few months of her life on the streets rooting through garbage and trying to avoid the attention of the Animal Service trucks and other hostile or apathetic humans. Her life with Sascha had been different, though; ever since he'd plucked the half-starved little runt out of that dumpster and taken her home, she'd never been treated with less than absolute love and respect. Sascha was most definitely her pack leader now, and she knew he'd take care of her.

The mental bond the two of them shared had instilled a sense of relaxed confidence in Sweeney, and it was this confidence that prevented her from dancing nervously out of reach as the strangely webbed fingers moved toward her over the edge of the pier. Rather, she leaned forward and sniffed at the appendage, committing the scent to memory before lapping gently at the skin of the woman's hand with her tongue.

Sweeney loved attention, that was a fact. She moved a little closer to the edge and flopped down onto her belly, hanging her head further down to allow her new friend easy access as her tail thumped happily against the wooden planks. She made no outward signs or sounds to draw attention to her new friend's presence, but her excited mental energy was enough to distract Sascha from his previous conversation. Sweeney was basically the mental equivalent of a doggy chatterbox whenever she made a new acquaintance.

He glanced over at the pier to the point where Sweeney was dangling her head toward the water, squinting slightly as he tried to make out the unfamiliar form. There didn't seem to be any traces of fear or anxiety from the canine's direction, so Sascha assumed her company was at least friendly. He elbowed Irei gently in the ribs and motioned at the scene in front of them before stepping out onto the pier.

As he neared the pair, his eyes widened in surprise. It was a...woman, apparently, and a blonde one at that. He didn't suppose it was so unusual for someone to be out and about for a morning swim, although she was treading awfully close to the bungalows...

Sascha slowed his pace just a bit as he drew up next to Sweeney, leaning his arms against the railing and looking down on his pretty new companion with a smile. "Looks like Sweeney's started making friends without me," he offered by way of a greeting.

As she would went meeting any new creature that was without the human capacities of greeting, Marit remained rather still but open to investigation. Once Sweeney was closer and went about sniffing the mermaid's strange fingers and lapping at her soft but tough skin, Marit grinned and raised one hand off of the pier to pet the top of the mutt's head. "You're just a lovely little one, aren't you?" Her eyes seemed especially blue, sharper than they would look when she was on land. They sparkled with a reflection of her inner nature.

While she was not completely unaware of another's approach, she was a bit distracted. He was not felt as he would be if he were swimming towards her as senses were much sharper in the lake. To Sweeney, she was whispering little things, nice comments and even little squeak noises that an animal could appreciate when a voice spoke out. It almost startled Marit but his tone was one that did not convey any initial reason to be overly cautious. "Names are funny things," she gave softly to Sweeney as she was another creature that went for some time without a name.

It was a moment before she addressed the man as she did feel a bit bad about her eavesdropping just a few minutes past. "Hello, sir," she greeted with a soft smile. It was then she realized that this was the first person here that had ever seen her in the water and it made her feel a bit funny. People here were supposed to be different, after all. She scratched behind Sweeney's ears as her eyes gazed up at the man with growing curiosity.

Sascha let his eyes wander briefly over the portion of the woman's upper body that was visible above the water's surface, noting the gracefully slender curve of her neck and the long, dark blonde strands of hair slicked back away from her face. Her cheekbones were much like his own, high and sharp, and there was most definitely a sort of beauty in the soft yet angular lines of her face.

The brilliant blue color of her eyes caught his attention, and an image of his Annie flashed through his mind. Surprisingly, though, the brief memory didn't stir up any harsh pangs of sorrow or heartache, and Sascha wondered exactly what that might mean. Was it possible that he was, somehow, finally moving out of his extended mourning period? Maybe his mini-meditative vacation had helped even more than he'd thought.

He brushed the thought away for the moment, blinking at the attractive new visitor's greeting and kneeling down beside Sweeney so that he was more at eye level. "Never liked the sound of 'Sir,' really. I think 'Sascha' fits much better." He smiled a little wider and held out a hand toward her. "Sascha Connolly, in fact- now there's a perfect fit. What should I call you, Miss?"

As he looked expectantly down at her face, her striking eyes suddenly brought to mind the image of a much more recent blue-eyed little mystery, and he motioned back in the direction of their bungalow with his head. "Say, have you seen anything strange around here this morning? My friend seems to have gotten an...unexpected delivery, and we're not exactly sure who we have to thank for it."

Irei wanted to rip up the dolls. Why was this burden placed on his shoulders? And exactly how much time did he have before this was supposed to take place anyways? It's not like he could just walk up to either Mitsuko or Kaiya and say something to the effect of: 'Oh yeah, you know that other blue eyed Asian guy? He's bad news and you should stay away from him, or this will happen!' And then swing the voodoo like dolls in their faces. Oh yeah, that would go over real well.

When Sascha had left him he had gone back inside for a bit to grab a cigarette and to toss the offending message on the table. He lit the white stick and placed it in his mouth. Irei knew he smoked too much. Any of his past relationships had told him the same thing, but nothing, not reason or pleading, had ever convinced him to kick the habit.

Irei headed back outside, not wanting to be alone with the creepy dolls, and went in search of where Sascha had gone off too. It wasn’t a difficult thing to find him as he had sort of motioned to the direction he was going a little earlier, and Irei found him crouched down with Sweeney looking over the edge of the pier.

Irei rested his arm on the railing and put his chin in his hand, as he leaned forward to see the pretty lady in the water.“Well hello.” He smiled slightly at the woman in the water,“You can call me Irei.” It was clear something was weighing heavily on his mind, and her eyes were the color of the sky reflected by the surface of the water. It wasn’t her fault, but he hoped he didn’t meet any other blue-eyed people today. He even planned to avoid mirrors which made the narcissist in him cry out in protest.

It seemed Sascha had already engaged her in conversation, so Irei decided to just listen. Not so much eavesdropping since he was doing it openly, but Sascha had asked the right question and he was waiting for her answer. Irei some how knew in his gut that no one had probably seen the dolls put up on their door though.

'Sascha' was a name that she had not heard in some time, not since she was in Sweden. A nice little man lived down the street and always took long evening walks. Someone told her he was originally from Russia or one of its satellites and had escaped during the Second World War. It was a fleeting thought and she was again focused on her neighbor when he offered a hand in greeting.

"Sascha Connolly," she repeated as it to commit to memory and let go of Sweeney and took Sascha's hand. "Marit Larsson." Her grip was gentle but not like a dead fish; feminine but present. He may or may not have noticed her fingers and a little bit of the butterflies were in her chest. It was strange and yet comforting that she could show a little of her true self to people and not feel as though she would be hurt for it.

Just then, another man came out and to the edge of the pier. "Hello," she replied back softly. Yes, his pale eyes did catch her attention for a beat. "Irei. That's different." Marit's lips pinched together a bit as that last part was not meant to actually be said aloud. With both of them present, she gave Sweeney one last rub and then pushed herself away from the pier just enough so that she did not have to lift her head back so much to see them. Marit glided with ease a few feet within a comfortable distance for both speaking and seeing, and answered Sascha's question.

She looked toward the bungalow a moment and then shook her head, soaked hair not moving much out of place. "No, I am afraid I haven't. I was much further out for most of the morning. I had been going along the piers for a little while but I hadn't heard anyone or seeing anything. The first creature I'd heard from land all more was Sweeney."

Sascha smiled and returned the handshake, although he did notice something a little...off about the texture of her grip. He briefly broke eye contact to glance down at their joined hands, and his eyes widened in surprise when he noticed the delicate webbing between her fingers. "My, oh my, what have we here?" Never one to be deterred by a few odd quirks in the face of such attractive company, he grinned wider and leaned down a little further to press a gentlemanly kiss over her knuckles. "Pleasure's definitely all mine, Miss...is it 'Miss' Larsson?"

He released her hand as he heard Irei approach, and once she'd distanced herself a bit from the pair, he returned to standing and leaning against the railing. It didn't sound as though this new acquaintance had seen or heard anything particularly helpful to them. Of course, Irei seemed to be soaking in all the information from the morning's occurrence with much more concern and trepidation than Sascha, but that was probably because it hit a little closer to home with the other man. Sascha had really only met either of the women implicated by the strange little dolls in passing, and then only because of their proximity to his roommate.

"We were afraid of that," he murmured at Marit's response, sparing a glance over at Irei before returning his attention to the little lady in the water. "So, out for a morning swim, then? Can't say I've seen you around here before...do you live here in the bungalows?" Sascha propped his chin in his hand and watched her tread water in an infinitely more graceful manner than he'd ever managed. "We haven't met too many of our neighbors, unfortunately. Should probably do something about that."

"Miss Larsson is fine, Mister Connolly," she said with a small smile. Though he had noticed one unique feature, it would not take much movement on her part to reveal some more. Her arms outstretched to her sides just under the surface of the water and they moved back and forth as if to glide, but the rest of her did not move much more than that. It was easy to bob as she was, though the end of her tail was rather close to brushing against some algae-covered rocks at the bottom.

She had no reason to really think much more about the package that he had intially asked about. The little smile quickly flashed into a grin before it softened once again at the notion that she was out for a morning swim as if it were something she did every once in awhile. Since they were neighbors and should be neighborly, Marit nodded a little in understanding to the latter of his statement. "Yes, actually I live--" a pause as she turned to look and see just how far down she really was, "Six to the south. But I've only really been living in it for a few days. Mostly I've been living... in... the lake." It felt strange to make such an omission to a complete stranger and she almost instantenously regretted sharing it.

But as quickly as that had risen in her, she dismissed it as something of a rotten old habit that she simply did not need to continue in this place and then made a rather bold gesture on her part. Marit had to lean back only some to counter the great weight of her tail but the distinctive shape of a large fin came up to the surface and made a little splash on the water. Somehow she could not help but giggle softly and add, "You could stay I take swims morning, noon and night."

Irei was the quiet type when he met someone while around Sascha. He seemed to learn more about people when he allowed them to talk, and he just listened. Besides, he had the matter of those dolls still in his head, and she hadn't seen anything. He could tell that this was going to be a very frustrating event. Why were those stupid dolls now his responsibility?

Suddenly he saw her fin the in the water. She was a mermaid? Irei was a little taken aback. He had never seen a mermaid before. This may be enough to distract him temporarily from the dolls and what they meant. He was actually very glad that she looked like the more western version of a mermaid, than some of the tales he had known in Japan, where the head and torso were the part that resembled the fish. She was beautiful and didn’t seem very kappa-like. She was also friendly. Perhaps it was only Japanese mermaids that were known to eat humans (specifically beautiful human girls).

Irei smiled at her as she giggled. “Ah, you must be a very good at swimming.” He glanced down to her fin. There also was another legend from his homeland concerning such beautiful creatures. If one were to consume mermaid flesh, it was possible to become immortal. He wondered how much truth there were in these legends.

"I probably swim as well as you walk," Marit replied with another giggle. These two were not the sort of people that she had been afraid to find, both in Sweden and here in Elysium. They seemed both accepting and perhaps a little curious as to what she was or how she might be in the water. It would be much too bold for her character to invite the three of them, sweet little Sweeney included, out for a swim where she might be inclined to show off a bit and give bigger flash of her tail. Maybe if she became better acquianted with them...

Just then, there was a sound that was strange to those on land but very familar to the one i the water. Marit looked behind her to find a hippocamp not far off and he was neighing to her. Her smile was warm and it was obvious that the two knew one another. He was lonely, or he was feigning loneliness, if only to get her to come back out and play just a little bit more. Marit's response was just as foreign, a sound made in such a manner that only Sweeney seemed privvy to understand what it could mean.

"My friend needs me," Marit explained when she turned back around to them. "But I hope to see you all more often, and on land." Marit leaned back and under the surface of the water. The men would see something glimmer and then another flick of her tail. The hippocamp excitedly took off after her, and they headed further into the center of the lake.
