Who: Zach and Nico
When: Morning
Where: Their Cottage
What: Nico knows what's up with his boy . . . and wants details!

Zach woke up at an hour that didn't feel very early, but Adrienne was still snuggled underneath his arm and sleeping. For a moment, Zach considered going back to bed and staying there all morning, but his stomach grumbled for food and there was no point in denying it. Since he was hungry, he might as well get up and get something to eat. The thing was Adrienne was usually up by now and, if she was over the night before, she was in the kitchen cooking.

Well, he wasn't going to wake her. It was fend for himself time. Zach leaned over to plant a soft kiss against her shoulder and moved to scramble quietly out of bed. He had to grab a new pair of boxers from the dresser and slip them on. He snagged a clean t-shirt too, because if he tried to cook anything it would be too easy to burn himself on accident without one.

He left his room, closing the door behind himself, and stopped in the bathroom long enough to quickly brush his teeth. His hair was a mess, but he didn't bother with it. Besides, it was food and then back to bed.

Zach took to the stairs until he was on the last floor and made a beeline for the kitchen. There was, unknown to him, an obvious dreamy-like smile on his face. Anyone who saw it, who wasn't completely dense, knew automatically what it meant . . . especially his best friend, Nico. It just so happened that Nico was downstairs that morning, too, and already awake.

Nico was rarely the first one awake in his cottage, oftentimes waking up when it was close to noon or sometime after that. But today he found himself awake at dawn, the sound of birds chirping happily outside stirred him from sleep. It wasn't an unpleasant way to way up he just wasn't used to it at all. And try as he might to fall back asleep it just wouldn't happen to him that morning.

He had made his way to the kitchen to look for something to eat, anything that didn't require cooking or heating up. Cereal would have done the trick if only he hadn't eaten the last of it yesterday. He sighed and silently wished that Adrienne had spent the night with Zach so that she could make breakfast. Whenever she had stayed over she was always the first one awake and she always busied herself in the kitchen cooking breakfast for all of them. He'd wake up to the smell of bacon and come rushing down the stairs like a puppy.

In fact it was the sound of feet coming down the stairs that caused Nico to pause his search of food. He looked up and saw Zach walking toward the kitchen. Normally this wouldn't have phased Nico except for the fact that today Zach looked particularly... serene. There was a goofy smile on his face, too. Nico immediately looked through the serving window of the kitchen toward the front door and saw Adrienne's shoes lying there. So Adrienne spent the night but she wasn't awake. And Zach had a dreamy smile on his face and was up early.

"Holy shit," he said with his arms crossed over his chest. "You got laid!" He let out a 'whoop' and went over to clap Zach on the shoulder in a congratulatory manner. "It's about damn time!" He leaned against the counter and couldn't stop grinning. This was a big moment for his best friend - finally losing his virginity not just to anyone, but to the girl that he had been dating for damn near six months now.

"All right, start from the beginning. And don't leave anything out, especially things about Adrienne being naked." Nico couldn't stop with the teasing, it was his nature to do so. He knew that Zach wouldn't divulge anything about Adrienne, but he had to put it in there if only for a laugh. At least he hoped that Zach would laugh at it.

Zach hadn't been prepared for being bulldozed so early in the morning. There were birds chirping out the window and everything. Reaching up with one of his hands towards his head at the sight of Nico, he realized he hadn't tried to at least look a little less disheveled as fingers grabbed at his hair and tried to make it go down some. But Nico wouldn't assume anything other than he just woke up, right?

Wrong, of course. Nico let out a sudden exclamation that almost made Zach jump by the sound of his friend's voice alone. He blinked dumbly for a few seconds, frozen in his spot as Nico came over to clap Zach on his shoulder. That broke him out of his thoughts. "What are you talking about?" Zach asked, letting out an amused huff. He would've shaken his head, but that might have been too much.

Nico leaned against the counter, grinning from ear to ear, and stared at Zach in an expectant manner. Zach wasn't exactly sure what to say or do, other than to try and keep his eyes on Nico almost suspiciously as he slowly walked over to one of the cabinets and opened it up to look for food.

Zach thought about ignoring his friend or lying and acting like he really didn't know what Nico was talking about, but he found himself sighing and closing the cabinet. Zach crossed his arms and turned to look at Nico. "How did you know?" Well, that probably gave it away right here. Hadn't Zach seen enough movies where the main character always says that and then the best friend grins and says, "I didn't until just now."

Nico didn't have to have Zach admit it to know what had happened between the alchemist and the werewolf. It was there, written - no, painted on his face. Anyone with half a brain could have guessed it, at least that's what Nico thought. "I had the same goofy grin on my face for three days after my first time," the sprite said proudly. "You just can't hide it." He chuckled and then crossed his arms over his chest. Zach couldn't hide it from him, not when Nico knew him the way he did.

The sprite punched Zach in the arm playfully and sighed. "Seriously though, bro... congrats. That's like a huge step for you and Adrienne." Nico knew that Zach took his relationship with Adrienne very seriously, and that the girl meant almost everything to him. The alchemist took his time with her because he didn't want to mess anything up and so far (apart from a few fights here and there) nothing had gone wrong. Nico was happy for Zach because if anyone deserved to be happy, it was his best friend.

"So am I gonna get details, or what?" He asked with an arched brow. "You might as well tell me now or I'm not gonna leave you alone till you do."

"I do not have a goofy grin on my face," Zach countered his best friend, shaking his head and almost laughing out loud. Yet, there it was, the idiotic grin on his face, and Zach felt it, so he quickly cleared his throat and covered it up as best as he could. He was trying; he really was, but it just wasn't going to work with Nico. He might as well give it up and just be honest.

Zach let out a deep sigh and lifted his eyes to the ceiling for a moment before bringing them back down to Nico again. Nico punched him in the arm just as he looked down, and Zach gave Nico one of those looks. He loosened up finally, finding himself shaking his head again and that damn smile really wouldn't go away.

"It just . . . happened," Zach suddenly said. "Yesterday, it started raining, and we had to run to the house, and we were soaked, so I got us some towels and we went into my room, and we started drying off and wanting to get the wet clothes off and . . . "

Zach trailed off, knowing exactly where the rest of the story went.

Nico laughed when Zach tried to cover up the grin. Yep, there was no mistaking it - that was the grin of a man who had just gotten laid. There really was no point in Zach hiding it from him. They were best friends and Nico could read the alchemist like a book, when he paid attention that is. Still it was fun watching Zach writhe a little only to give in at the end.

"Ah the 'let's get out of these wet clothes' trick," Nico said with a knowing nod as if he had been in that situation before. He never had of course; though Nico often spoke of his various conquests he really wasn't all that much of a player. He had only been with three girls (or was it four?) and since he had been in Elysium, his only steady booty call had been an old porn mag and his right hand. Sadly, things were slow for the sprite but at least he was happy for his best bud!

"You are smooth, bro!" Nico said with a large grin. "You laid the Kitano charm down on your woman and she couldn't resist! I knew you had it in you!" His grin turned into a smirk though and he leaned in closer to Zach. "So Kit... how many times did you... you know..." It was Nico's turn to trail off and as he did he looked over his shoulder to make sure that Adrienne wasn't going to make a surprise appearance on them just as he and Zach were having 'guy talk'.

Zach looked a little confused and lost for a moment as his shoulders rose in prolonged shrug. He was trying his best to explain his situation the evening before with Adrienne. "It wasn't a trick," he said somewhat uncertainly, although not because it had been a trick but because he wasn't sure if Nico would believe him or not. "We were just looking at each other, and it kind of just . . . " It sounded so sappy when he put it the way it happened. Eye contact and all those mushy romance feelings mixed in with sexual desire. Zach closed his mouth. He wasn't explaining that part to Nico.

Nico was still complimenting him, though, and Zach tried to remember all of the times when Nico had just announced he'd been with a girl and his own reactions. Well, usually, it was just like this in a way. Only all of those times Nico had been with someone it wasn't because they had a relationship like Zach and Adrienne had with each other. Zach idly wondered if maybe that gave an answer to the weird feeling he felt when it came to talking about it. Part of him felt it was best not to talk about it unless he spoke of it a certain way.

How many times? How many times what? Have sex? Zach's mind flew through the events of last night, trying his best to remember everything. It didn't help that he had just woken up and hadn't reached his full potential in the brain power department yet. "I think it was three times," Zach said as he ran it through his head. "Or was it four? No, wait, it was three . . . I think."

"Suuure it wasn't a trick," Nico teased. It was always fun pulling Zach's chain like this, and it was so easy to do, too. Getting the alchemist riled up was one of Nico's favorite past times. Some may have seen the teasing as general meanness but the two boys had known each other long enough to know that wasn't the case. Nico saw that Zach was getting a bit flustered, and yeah the words coming out of his best friend's mouth did sound sappy. Like something you would have heard in a chick flick, only coming out of the girl's mouth. But Nico didn't admit that out loud.

Nico's own sexual encounters weren't on a grand scale. Sometimes he was in a relationship, sometimes he wasn't; and though he spoke of his experience like he had been with tons of women, in reality Nico had only been with less than a handful. He was a big talker, the sprite, but that didn't stop him from trying to work his charm on the ladies.

Nico wasn't expecting the answer Zach gave him. He blinked his wide eyes two or three times before a surprised smirk took over his features. "What the hell, bro? Three or four but you're not sure?" He shook his head and let out a small chuckle before he slapped his hand on Zach's shoulder. "That's... " he was at a loss for words, seriously. Three for four times for his first time was amazing! "You're such a playa!! Three or four times... fuck dude, I passed out after my first time and didn't wake up till morning!"

Zach crossed his arms. "I know what you're trying to do," he said in petulant voice, "and it isn't going to work." Sometimes he thought he really needed to work on the whole easily riled up thing. Nico just had to phrase something a certain way, and even though Zach knew he was joking around, he'd always react in a non-laughing way. "Jackass," Zach said, and he laughed, letting his arms fall to his sides. Okay, maybe it was time to just loosen up and talk the way Nico did for a little bit.

"It was . . . " Zach paused, searching for a single word to describe his night with Adrienne. "Amazing," he said, leaning against the counter and propping the bottom of his forearms on the counter top. "I dunno how it kept happening. I got tired, but we were still kissing, and, well, y'know . . . I was ready again, and so we did it again. She was on top at first, but then I was." Zach stopped there, not sure just how much information he wanted to give Nico this early in the morning. Maybe he would tell him more of the story later, but Adrienne was asleep upstairs and it just didn't seem right.

"It felt so good," Zach said slowly, "but it also felt like . . . there was a connection, too, you know?" Zach didn't realize until a second later what he had said. He bit the inside of his cheek after the last part, wondering if he could take that back in a way that wouldn't affront Nico. Or maybe you don't didn't sound very nice, especially not coming from your best friend.

Zach was quiet for a moment. Then, he revealed something Nico probably wasn't expecting. "She said she loves me," he added, twisting his hands together in front of himself.

Amazing sounded about right when it came to sex. Nico loved sex, the feel of a woman's body underneath his fingertips as he explored every inch of her. It was heavenly and Nico missed it like crazy. He chuckled softly as Zach mentioned getting turned on again and going at it again with his girlfriend. Who would've thought that little Zach Kitano was such a player?

Player or not, Nico didn't expect the whole 'connection' comment. He knew that the couple had been going out for a long time now and that sometimes that meant the relationship was serious. But as far as having a connection with someone during sex? That wasn't one sided on the girl's part? No, Nico didn't have any experience with that and he would readily admit that. Nico hadn't had a deep relationship with a girl before, and he doubted that he would have one anytime soon. He didn't take offense to Zach's words though and smiled. "Nah bro, I ain't never felt that with a girl. But it's good that you do with Adrienne." He patted Zach's arm again to show that there was no hard feelings and then stepped back to lean against the counter.

And then Zach hit him with another whammy. It seemed like this conversation was just full of unexpected things. "She loves you?" He asked just to be sure he heard his best friend correctly. He noticed that Kit was wringing his hands nervously and the sprite brought his eyes upward to look at Zach. "That's awesome dude!" he said happily before the pause. "Or is it?" He raised his eyebrows in a questioning manner and cocked his head to the side. Nico knew that Zach had feelings for Adrienne, but the two boys hadn't really talked about it further than that. Did Zach love Adrienne? Not even Nico knew, though now the sprite was very curious to find out.

He had felt that way with Adrienne when they were together that night, but he also felt that way about her whenever they were just together and sitting around doing nothing, too. They had something special he could feel just by holding her in his arms, but it went deeper that night somehow. Zach had shared an act with Adrienne much more intimate than anything they experienced together before, and not because it was sex. It was sex with someone they had feelings for, and that changed it entirely.

Nodding his head at Nico's question, Zach looked over at his best friend. Adrienne said she loved him more than just once, but it wasn't the fact that she had said it. It was the fact that Zach hadn't said it back. "Yeah," he said quickly, nodding his head again. "It is. It's just . . . " Zach knew he was about to address a question out loud that Nico couldn't answer, but maybe getting it out there in the open would help Zach realize what was holding him back from saying it himself. "How are you supposed to know when you're in love?"

There were times when Nico wished he had that sort of connection with a girl, but the truth was that the sprite had never allowed himself to get that close to a girl before. He wanted to 'sow his wild oats', 'play the field', and all of the other euphemisms that went with the idea of sleeping around. But he hadn't even been doing that lately and a part of him sort of felt lonely. Zach had Adrienne, Loki had Mitsuko, leaving Nico the only one without a girlfriend.

But now wasn't the time for those thoughts. He was focused on Zach and he had to smile when his best friend said that Adrienne loving him was a good thing. Though that left Nico without a clue as to why Zach seemed so unsure about it all. But then came the question, one that Nico didn't really know how to answer.

"How are you supposed to know when you're in love?"

Nico blinked and scratched the back of his head. "Well shit dude. How the hell am I supposed to know?" He kept rubbing the back of his head and then moved down to his neck. He sighed deeply. "I mean, aren't you just supposed to know. Like, it's a feeling or something... right? That's what they say in the movies." Nico shrugged and slouched a little on the counter. He really didn't know what to tell Zach but he could see that the alchemist was confused over it all. "Well I dunno... could you, uh, do anything for her? Could you imagine spending the rest of your life with her? Oh oh, I know - my mom used to say that she loved dad so much she could die for him. So... could you die for Adrienne?"

"Well, no offense," Zach said, "but I didn't think you would know." He was beginning to feel a little exasperated. It wasn't because of Nico; it was aimed towards the fact that Zach couldn't figure out if it was right for him to say those words to Adrienne yet or not. He wasn't going to say it just to say it, and maybe that's why he hadn't said it to her yet. Still, the struggle over it in his head only hurt his brain and gave him a headache. He probably gave it more thought than it needed. Maybe it was one of those things you just felt instead of had to spend time figuring out. What would happen to get him to feel it, though?

"That's what I've always heard," Zach added a little despairingly, crossing his arms over his chest and slouching against the counter along with Nico. Nico offered suggestions, and Zach reached up to scratch the back of his neck. His hair had suddenly tickled him. "I think I could," he said. To be honest, he hadn't given much thought to all of that. Could he spend his life with her? All Zach knew was he couldn't imagine his life without her. Maybe it was the wording. It wasn't ringing right for him and his nineteen-year-old mind. Zach wasn't like most other nineteen-year-olds, but he was still young.

Zach furrowed his brow and looked over at his friend. "Could I die for her?" It felt like an uncomfortable topic for Zach, and he wasn't sure why. He hid silver in the alchemy labs to keep it from being out in the open . . .

"I'd rather get hurt than have her get hurt," Zach said. "Hell, I haven't thought about death," he added quickly. He hadn't thought about death. Even though Jared had died, Zach still held a teenager's idea of death: it's never going to happen to me. At least not anytime soon.

"Well shit, I don't know," Nico said with a shrug. The sprite didn't know what to tell his best friend since he didn't know a damn thing about love. He knew he loved Zach as a friend, that he loved his parents and his little brother. He knew he loved his own life, but being in love? Well he didn't the first thing about it. He felt bad that he couldn't help Zach's dilemma and there were a thousand things running through his mind about what to say. But none of them seemed right and he didn't want to steer Zach in the wrong direction.

"You should go talk to your grandma. She knows everything, and she's been around for a long time. She'd be more help than me." He cupped Zach's shoulder in a comforting manner and sighed. "Sorry I couldn't help, bro. I'm just no good with that stuff, you know that. But shit, I think it's awesome that she loves you. She doesn't seem like the type of girl to just say that to anyone, so she must really mean it."

Zach nodded his head, his arms still crossed over his chest. "Yeah, when it comes to that maybe I should talk to Grandma." Grandma knew a lot about love. She was only ever with one guy for her whole life, and they were together until the moment he passed away. If anyone knew about love, it was Grandma. Zach supposed he could talk to his mom about it, too, but a part of him knew his mom would be a little biased about giving advice. On the other hand, Grandma was always the type of person to give something to you in a straight and honest answer. To Zach, she seemed like the best choice to talk to when it came to the topic of being in love.

"Don't worry about it," Zach said, offering Nico a slight smile. After all, didn't they start this conversation just talking about how Zach had finally had sex? How did they get to talking about love out of that? Oh, right, Zach mentioned what Adrienne said to him. Zach's smile grew with what Nico said next. It was just what he needed to hear. He clapped Nico on the shoulder, pushing away from the counter. "Thanks, man. I just think I need some encouragement, you know? It's new territory, new ground. It's just . . . a little scary."

With that, though, Zach remembered that he was hungry. "I think it's time for breakfast," he said with a grin. Maybe the two of them could throw something together that was at least halfway decent, and Zach could bring Adrienne some breakfast in bed.
