Who: Mitsuko Kamiyama, Midori Kamiyama, Pietro Conté and two Elven guards
Where: Town Hall-- Dungeon
When: Morning
What: Incarcerated Mitsuko is unhappy Mitsuko

(OOC NOTE: Italics denote Japanese)

Mitsuko was in a foul mood. Not surprising, considering she had woken up in a jail cell. The small, white fox transformed into her human form once again. Rather than the white dress she had been wearing during her interrogation, she was now in a black track suit.

"Ite," she murmured as she rubbed the back of her neck, sitting up on the hard square that passed for a bed. She swung her long legs over the side and got to her feet, walking to the bars. There were also two guards flanking her cell.

One of the guards noticed she was awake. He just glared at her. "Sleep well?" His voice was filled with malice.

Mitsuko glared back at him. "Kutabare!"

The other guard simply stared at Mitsuko, malice in his gaze. She glared back. The first guard moved away, going to retrieve a tray of food. He went to the door of the cell. "Move back."

Mitsuko crossed her arms over her chest, not budging in the slightest. "Nani-temë?"

"Move back or you're going to go hungry." The guard didn't look at all concerned about Mitsuko starving. They both looked absolutely livid with her. Apparently, that tacky piece of jewelry was beloved in the Elven community. She was sure she would be treated kinder if she had murdered someone.

Smiling wryly, Mitsuko put her hands up in the air in mock surrender and she stepped back, sitting back down on the cot. The guard opened the door and brought in her food, setting it down on the floor before stepping out again and locking the door once again.

It was only a moment before there was a clanging noise as the tray hit the bars. The food was scattered across the floor.

Mitsuko smiled sweetly at her guards, who seemed unshaken by her outburst. The one who hadn't spoke yet continued to stare at her. "Nanka yö?!" She demanded.

The guard didn't know Japanese, but got the gist of it. "You should get used to being here, Kamiyama. Do you really think anyone's going to believe your lies?"

Mitsuko grit her teeth. "Bengoshi to awasete kudasai."

The first guard rolled his eyes. "I don't know what you're trying to prove, talking like that."

"Because it doesn't really matter what language I speak in." Mitsuko said, in English finally. "No matter what I say, you're going to think it's a lie."

"That's because it is," the second guard replied.

"Lawyer," Mitsuko said simply. "I have a right to an attorney. If I do not have one, one will be provided for me. Now provide one!"

She picked up the tray she had tossed and began to bang it against the bars. "My civil liberties are being trampled on here!" She yelled. "I refuse to be a scapegoat just because you guys were dumb enough to lose that ugly-ass thing!"

"You're certainly acting like a brat."

Mitsuko froze as she was about to hit the bars again with the tray. Her eyes widened. "Okaasama?"

Midori stepped forward. She looked to the guards on either side of the cell. "Open the cell. I need to speak to her."

"You're her mother," the first guard said. "You'll help her escape."

Midori glared at him. "If you had any knowledge, you'd know just how ridiculous that notion is. Now open the cell."

The guard looked wary, but did as Midori asked. She stepped in and the door was shut behind her.

Mitsuko put her hands behind her head, leaning back against the wall. She tried to look cool, but it was clear her mother's presence there had rattled her. "You didn't come all the way to Elysium just because I'm in trouble, did you?"

"Of course not," Midori replied dismissively. "I've been here for weeks, I just chose to not show myself to you until now. Now are you really going to use that gutter talk in my presence?"

"You mean English?" Mitsuko sighed, seeming to think about it. "Well, I was going to speak Japanese with the guards, but since you'd prefer that... I think I'm going to go with English now. So why'd it take you so long to come see me?"

"How are you doing?" Midori asked, now speaking in English. There was a flicker of concern in her dark eyes.

Mitsuko flinched slightly, surprised by her mother's concern. But she shrugged it off. "Oh, well... All right, I suppose. Being incarcerated gave me strange dreams last night. All about handcuffs." She smirked. "Of course, I wasn't the one who was handcuffed."

"Must you be so crass?" Midori asked with a sigh.

Mitsuko seemed to think about this for a moment. She then nodded. "Yeeeeaahhh," she drew out the word. "I really think I do." She folded her hands and leaned against them. "So... You've been here for a while then."

Midori nodded. "I arrived the same time as your father."

Mitsuko flinched again, shocked at his pronouncement. She let out a small laugh. "Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised you didn't want to help me with my father's death. Comfort has never been your strong suit. Too busy with the clan? Where are they? The only Kitsune I've seen is the Genko brat."

It was now Midori's turn to flinch. "They're... Gone."

Mitsuko laughed. "What do you mean they're gone? Gone where? You'd never leave the clan alone. You'd shrivel up and die without someone to lead."

"They're gone," Midori stressed. She sat down beside Mitsuko. "I didn't get back to them in time. By the time I got to Hokkaido, the radiation levels were too... I couldn't go in..."

"Radiation?" Mitsuko repeated. "They..."

"It seems we are all that is left," Midori finished. She shook this off easily. "So.... you seem to have been quite busy," She gestured to the jail cell. "Obviously."

"I didn't do it," Mitsuko insisted.

Midori ticked off on her fingers. "The Autumn Festival... A pocket watch was taken from a dwarf. August twenty-ninth... A necklace was stolen by a dark-haired girl who seemed to disappear into the crowd. Both items were later found on the doorstep of Town Hall." She smiled sweetly. "And of course, there was that minor incident at Uzoma Nkemdilim's home."

"I"m not being charged with any of those," Mitsuko said cooly.

"No, you are being charged with someone much more serious," MIdori said. She crossed the cell and sat down beside Mitsuko. "This isn't a game, musume yo."

"That explains why I'm not having any fun," Mitsuko's voice was laced with bitterness.

"You've wiggled out of trouble many times before, but not this time," Midori looked grave. "They will banish you. You will be cast out of Elysium. Your half-brother will be left to fend for himself. They will be lenient on you if you admit your guilt and return what you stole."

"I didn't steal it!" Mitsuko leapt to her feet. "Why doesn't anyone believe me?"

"Because you have made a career of deception!" Midori yelled back. "You are a liar. You pride yourself on it."

"Well, I learned from the best, didn't I?" Mitsuko snapped back. "Really, Okaasama... I've known Yakuza with better morals than you."

"Everything I've done was for the welfare of the Tenko. Your schemes serve only yourself." Midori shook her head slowly. "Mitsuko, I will not be able to protect you..."

"Protect me?" Mitsuko snapped. "When have you ever protected me?"

Midori rose now. "I have done more for you than you will ever know..."

"You mean done to me!" Mitsuko yelled back. "Everything you've done was for your own agenda!" She shook her head savagely. "Do I even need to remind you of the Inari Festival?"

"This isn't the time to bring up past wrongs on either side," Midori said calmly. "Just return Mir’en’Galad and this will be over."

"I don't have it!" Mitsuko cried. "Do you really think I would keep lying about this just to keep that tacky-as-fuck thing? I honestly, truly, swear to Inari DO NOT HAVE IT!!!!"

====

Far Too Long Japanese-English Translation

Ite = Ow

Kutabare! = Drop dead!

Nani-temë? = Who do you think you are? (SIDENOTE: Mitsuko's speech is both (1) Very hostile. (2) Used mostly by men. This was done intentionally to display Mitsuko's superiority and irritation, as feminine language is considered more formal and subdued.)

Nanka yö?! = Do you want to say something?

Bengoshi to awasete kudasai. = I want to see a lawyer.

Okaasama = Mother (SIDENOTE: Usually, it is simply "Okaasan". However, due to Midori's superior position and attitude, Mitsuko uses the "sama" honorific instead of "san".)

Genko = A black fox. As should be well known by now, used by Mitsuko as an insult/nickname for Shigeru.

Musume yo = My daughter

Yakuza = Japanese organized crime groups

Tenko = Japanese name for the Celestial Kitsune, the clan which Mitsuko and Midori belong to.

Inari = The Japanese spirit of fertility, rice, agriculture, foxes, industry and worldly success. Worshipped by a majority of Kitsune as the creator of the species / God. Kitsune hold a five day long festival for Inari in November, which is what Mitsuko is referring to.

"You don't need to say anymore, Miss Kamiyama," said a voice a few steps behind Midori. Pietro Conté had entered the dungeons of Town Hall long enough to hear the last part of Midori and Mitsuko's argument. It was heated to say the least, and by the sound of it Midori had been questioning the younger kitsune about the stolen artifact. Pietro wasn't sure what he was going to be able to do in a situation like this, but he came at the request of his daughter who had insisted that Mitsuko was innocent.

"I'm Pietro Conté, Adrienne's father," he said to both women as he approached the cell. He bowed to them, hearing from Adrienne that they were Japanese and such was their custom, and grinned. "Adrienne told me about the situation Miss Kamiyama and asked me to defend you in this case. I hope you don't mind." He smiled at Mitsuko in a fatherly manner, feeling sympathy for the young girl immediately as he imagined what it would be like if it were his own daughter behind those bars.

"Ms. Kamiyama," Pietro said this time to Midori. "I'm going to have to ask you to leave while I speak with your daughter." His voice was calm and collected and in no way condescending. This was Pietro's professional facade, the one he put on during trials and meetings. Hopefully the older kitsune woman would understand and not take offense to his request.

"Well, thank Inari!" Mitsuko cried, throwing her hands up in the air. "It's about time those Elvish Bastards got off their snooty asses and got me some representation." She ran a hand over her hair. "You're a lawyer, Mister Conté? Once we get these bogus charges dropped, I think I can sue them for discrimination. Just because a girl turns into a fox, doesn't mean she's untrustworthy!" She was yelling not at Pietro, but at the guards she knew still lingered nearby.

She smiled warmly at Mr. Conté, bowed her head before holding out her hand to shake his. "It's very nice to meet you." Her heart warmed slightly at the knowledge Adrienne didn't think she was guilty. "That girl of yours is one of the best friends I've ever had," Mitsuko said quietly, truly meaning it. "I really owe her for this. And you."

Midori remained in her spot, looking coolly over the scene in front of her. "I am fine where I am, thank you very much. If you are going to be representing my daughter, I believe I should be present."

"What the fuck do you care?" Mitsuko snapped. "You think I did it. And even if you didn't, I still wouldn't want you around."

Midori remained cold. "Mitsuko, I didn't raise you to be so disrespectful."

"You didn't raise me at all," Mitsuko replied, her voice just as cold. "You left that up to your advisors. Now get out of here so I can speak to my attorney. I'm sure you can find someone else's life to ruin in the meantime. Why don't you go bug Shigeru? You've always liked messing with the Spirits."

Midori eyed her daughter appraisingly. She clucked her tongue before taking a deep breath. "We will speak again later."

"Can't wait." Mitsuko rolled her eyes greatly as Midori strode out. She turned her attention back to Mr. Conté. "I'm really sorry about that." She shook her head, letting out a bitter laugh. "Perfect time for me to have to deal with my family issues, right? Just as I'm accused of theft."

Pietro smiled at Mitsuko and held up a hand when she said she owed them. "You don't owe us anything. Adrienne was worried that you'd be stuck in here without some representation. She believes that you didn't commit the crime, and so do I considering the evidence." Pietro would have said more were he not cut off by the argument between Mitsuko and Midori. While Mr. Conté felt he should intervene, the parental side of him told him it was best to stay out of it. He let the mother-daughter pair let out their frustrations until the moment Midori strode out of the dungeon.

Pietro gave Mitsuko another warm smile when she apologized and he shook his head. "When you've been a lawyer for as long as I have, you realize that family frustrations seem to come out during times like this. You don't need to apologize though. I understand completely."

Mr. Conté pulled a wobbly chair over toward the cell and sat down upon it. "Now Miss Kamiyama, tell me everything you did on the night in question."

ooc: I think we can end it with Mits' next comment. She doesn't have to write out everything, but sorta do a fade out. Does that work for you?

A short bit of Pietro leaving should wrap this up

Mitsuko went to the edge of the cell, draping her arms casually over the bars and leaning heavily against them. "It means a lot to me that you two believe me. Seems like that's a very unpopular opinion around here." She sighed deeply, lowering her head. "And it's hardly my incarceration that's bringing out the bad blood with me and my mother. It's more.... We despise each other and this is the first chance we had to hash it out in seven years."

She rested her chin against the bars and let out another sigh. She went over the story once again. Emily's birthday, drinking with Irei, kissing Irei, running away.

"The thing is," Mitsuko said quietly. "I can't explain my whereabout after I ran away from Irei and when I turned up back home. There's no one to corroborate the story, because no one saw me and...." She shook her head slowly. "It's just not something I usually tell people." But for some reason, she trusted Mr. Conté. Maybe it was because she was Adrienne's father and she would have certainly told Adrienne. "After I left Irei, I snuck over to Zach, Nico and Loki's cottage. Zach and Nico didn't see me. They were asleep when I came in and I was gone before they woke up. I felt so bad about what happened with Irei, I just..." She sighed. "I dunno. I wanted to be where Loki slept, I guess. I miss him a lot. But giving out that bit of information won't prove my innocence, just make people laugh at me for being such a sap."

There were very few times when Mitsuko could say she felt 'defeated'. This felt like one of them. "Tell the Council what you want to. At this point, I don't care if people think I'm a fluffy girl who's in love with her boyfriend." Mitsuko let out a bitter laugh. "The only thing I'm guilty of is kissing a guy who isn't my boyfriend. And as horrible as that is, it's not exactly a felony."

Pietro listened to Mitsuko and felt even more sorry for her than when he first entered the dungeon. He had defended a lot of people in his time, some guilty, others innocent, and he could tell that Mitsuko was innocent in this crime. She spoke honestly and without hesitation and from what he had heard, she was sticking with her story. Others might have said that just made her a good liar, but Pietro wasn't convinced. There was something that told him that Mitsuko was telling the truth and he was going to prove that to everyone.

"Don't worry Miss Kamiyama," Adrienne's father said as he rose to his feet. "I'll speak to the Council immediately. And I think I want to speak to the elf who questioned you because if you told him what you told me, there's really no reason for him to have placed you in a holding cell." He replaced the notes he had taken into the folder and smiled at the incarcerated kitsune. "I'll see you soon." He bowed to her and left the dungeon without another word. Pietro was going to get Mitsuko out of that cell and he quickly set out to do just that.
