Who Kelckek, Adela, and Susie. (Also Open if anyone is interested.)
When Mid Afternoon-ish.
Where Water Bungalow, then lake Alata'elen.
What Kelchek wakes up after his nearly eight month coma.

Nightmares of his last few minutes of consciousness plagued Kelchek’s mind. All too real were the images of that battle field just as their party reached the Balkan Mountains. Watching his newly found Elven friends die one by one as they tried to make their way to safety. He could still feel their pain as his own, until the explosion- a bright flash of red and yellow, then black. Emptiness was all that he could feel slowly consuming him, filling his thoughts and his lungs with nothing. He was suffocating.

“Donovan!” Kelchek shot up out of his nearly eight month coma yelling for the only other person left in their traveling party- his brother. His muscles ached from being immobile. “O, Où suis-je?” Wh, Where am I? He could feel the soreness of his throat as he quickly scanned the room; plain walls, wood floor, a few vases with different foliage, and windows, large windows with a view of the lake. Relief started to spread though his body knowing that water was so close to him. If only the woods were right there as well, he thought to himself knowing he was most comfortable in the woods or in water.

Using the end table he cautiously eased his way out of the all too comfortable bed. He looked at his feet in an attempt to stable himself and as he took his first unsteady step his arm knocked a small box off the shelf and unto the floor. His eyes started to water as he looked at its contents before him, a crystal pendant, a picture and a little black book. Kelchek kneeled down and grabbed the pendant necklace, its brilliance intensified by his tan chest as he placed it around his neck. He slid the black book under his pillow wanting to keep its contents of healing knowledge secret. Then he reached for the picture. Crinkled and a little torn, this picture meant more to him than anything.

He could no longer keep the tears back as he held the picture of his human lover, Matthew. Pain and remorse filled him as their final moments together filled his mind. Setting the picture on the end table Kelchek rushed to the window, projecting his emotions into the clear water that surrounded his new home, but not even that could help subside the pain he was feeling. "Pourquoi?" Why? But he was no longer alone. He could feel someone else’s energy behind him.

Ever since Adela had found out that Kelchek was here in this place, she'd gone to see him. Of course she knew that he wasn't awake, that he was still in this coma. Though she wasn't quite sure what had happened, or how he'd got in this state (people barely told her anything) she was sure to come and visit at least once a week. It was only natural for her to want to visit him, to see if he'd gotten any better. The weeks had gone by since she got there, and now it just happened to be one of those evenings that she was paying her friend a visit when she heard a loud shout from the other room. The noise surprised her of course, beyond surprised. In fact she'd given this squeak of surprise and then fallen over the couch.

Once she righted herself, Adela sprinted to the other room to find Kelchek standing there at the window. "Kelchek?" she questioned, not quite sure what to say or at all what to do. She was sure that he knew she was there. Inhaling slightly, she let out a breath. "It's me, Adela. You're .. safe now."

Kelchek stood as still as the lake's surface outside his window. He knew who it was, her voice and energy was all too familiar though it had been many years since the last time they had been together. He wiped the tears from his eyes as he walked over towards the girl he would never have expected to see again. To see her standing there was more than he could take in his current emotional state. Her face brought back a rush of memories, both pleasant and miserable, of his past. His entire life began to swirl in front of him.

"Adela," he whispered, choking back a new wave of tears, "Si mush est arrivé." So much has happened. His vision started to blur as his tears refused to be held back, he needed to sit down and process everything. The bed was comfortable yet firm as he took a seat, his normal gracefulness gone.

The last thing she wanted to do was cause him any kind of pain. She never wanted to do that for anyone. But she could tell that he was in pain. Of course he was, he just woke up from a coma. Not to mention all of that other stuff that happened. Adela stood there, just waiting for him to come to her for a moment before closing the gap. She didn't want to rush him or anything.

"I know.. but you'll be all right." she tried to reassure him, even if the whole thing was kind of fruitless in her attempts to do so. As he sat down, she sat down next to him and put her arm around him. "I'm right here. Just take your time. You've been asleep so long.. we were worried you'd never wake up." She thought maybe someone should look him over, but she didn't want to freak him out or anything.

How long had he been asleep? A wave of nausea passed through him. What had happened to the world? What had happened to him? This was all to much for him to handle and it just kept coming. How long has it been, Adeal? The look in his eyes had to have been heart wrenching, but there was nothing he could do about it. He could clearly remember the last few years, but the rest of his past started to blur. He clung unto the one thing he could remember the most, working for Adela's father.

"How is your father?" He asked before quickly realizing that it was the wrong question. He had abandoned him. All the man was trying to do was be supportive to him, and he up and left. Now guilt was added to the ocean of unpleasant feelings he was already going though.

At his question, she had to think back to how long it actually had been. "It's been about.. a couple of months? You got here not long after I did actually. When I found out you had arrived, I.. came to make sure it was really you," she explained. The look on his face was heartbreaking and really she didn't want to do anything but give him a great big hug and be there for him.

When he asked about her father, she wasn't quite sure what to say. It would only upset him more, but he had a right to know. She let out a breath. "He's.. he's gone. He died.. before I got here. I didn't have anywhere else to go, so I came here when he died with some other people." Her voice was quiet, but hten she shook her head. "Don't worry about it all right? He was very old and very sick."

How could several months have passed? Kelckek was confused. His breathing began to slow, but not from calming down. He felt as if he was drowning. He started to feel claustrophobic. He began to jitter. He was finding it harder and harder to stay put. He stood up and began to pace slowly in front of her.

Dead? One of the only men though out his entire life, the only one who ever mentored him, was dead. Yet another wave of sorrow shook though his body. "Dead? I'm so sorry Adela. He could feel her pain mix with his own. Adela... I...

He was lost for words. He couldn't stay here anymore. He needed to find some trees, or some water. There was water right outside his window, but he needed somewhere more private. He walked though his living room towards the door, pausing only long enough to grab a jacket hanging by the door. Not waiting to see if it fit, or even if it was his he left the loft.

Je suis desole... I'm sorry.

Though Adela could tell that the fact that he'd been in a coma for months was seriously weighing on him, it wasn't quite like she knew exactly what to do. There wasn't any way to make it better, no amount of 'there there's' or pats on the shoulder or even hugs could make all of that go away. She knew, because there wasn't anything that had ever made her feel better after her father died. Of course then she'd been all alone and then with strangers, so there wasn't any of that stuff. But she felt like if she had, it wouldn't have mattered.

Her head nodded just barely, "You don't have to say anything, there isn't anything to say, I know there's not. It's.." but she didn't quite get the chance to say anything else because he was grabbing his coat and heading out the door. She sighed, if only because he probably wasn't physically fit to be outside. Well she thought he should be looked at by a doctor or something. Plus there was the fact that he was surrounded by lots of different species out there.

Though perhaps she was slightly annoyed at the whole thing, she understood his need to get out. After all, who was she but just some girl who watched over him? She grabbed her own jacket, through she banged her shin against the coat rack as she did, which ended with her being frustrated enough to just knock it over completely and then she stormed out, intent on going home.

He felt awful to just leave Adela like that. It was inconsiderate and wrong, so he walked. He had no where in mind, he didn't know of anywhere to go anyways. What a wreck I've already made of things! He thought as he scoffed at himself.

Kelckek wandered impatiently down the dirt path. He wasn't waiting for anyone, or thing, and had no reason for this impatience, but he his pace quicked unconsciously. The path led though a small patch of trees and Kelchek desired to just glamor himself and join the trees, but he was too emotional to concentrate enough for that, so he kept walking. When he saw the end of the path, just where the trees ended, he considered turning back. But turning back to what? "Oi irais-je?" Where would I go? He though to himself as his footsteps slowed. As he neared the end of the trail his heart beat quickened.

Only a little ways down from him was a lake. He was unaware of it's name, but that didn't matter to him. He was nearly running as he tore off his light jacket and shirt. His mind was set on that water as he forced himself to slow down to remove his pants leaving on only his boxers. "Oi!" He yelled as he the chill of the water rushed over him. He dived into the water and forced himself forward with all the power in his body. Nothing seemed to matter, but the need for air make him return to the surface. He looked back at the shore realizing he had made it further than he had though.

Susie had had a pretty eventful morning. Despite the chill, she decided that a swim was just the thing she needed. Tired, she hadn’t done much more than laze for the last half an hour. She let the water slip over her tail as she raised and lowered it, simply staring at the miniature waterfalls she created. Distracted by the sight, she didn’t immediately notice the man invading her territory.

Up her tail went and down fell the water. But there, beyond the corner of her fin, was something that hadn’t existed a moment ago. Susie lowered her tail and righted herself in order to get a better look. It looked like a man staring back at the shore. For a moment, she looked that way too. There was nothing interesting there.

Susie didn’t want to startle him, but she thought perhaps she should say something, “Um, hi. Are – are you lost?” Not the brightest comment, but she couldn’t imagine what he was doing here. He didn’t look like he was swimming.

Kelchek continued to just float there staring at the shore. Of course there was nothing interesting there, so he just let his mind wander. He wanted to dive back under and forget the world existed, but a voice brought him back to reality. Was he lost? He had to think about it. Nothing made sense, and he really didn't know where he was...

"We..." Yes, he yelled back at the girl, unsure whether of not to approach her. Does she have fins? A confused look passed over his face not sure if his eyes were deceiving him. He knew all of his emotions must still be present on his face, but slowly tread water towards her. He made a sad attempt to calm his mind, not wanting to be an emotional burden to this new acquaintance. "Kinda cold out here for someone your size." He yelled, trying to hide his distress.

Even though she’d asked the question, she hadn’t really expected him to say yes. How do you get lost in the water? The shore was right there, so that couldn’t be what he was looking for. Maybe he hadn’t understood her question? His voice held more than a trace of accent. And he certainly looked confused enough. What was it Lysander said about all this sounding chaotic?

But he did understand English. With his next words, he disarmed her entirely. He was a complete stranger, and yet he showed concern for her? Any impertinent reply she could have prepared died on her lips. She didn’t even try to swim away when he approached. This was her element; she was safe. He didn’t move very fast though, so she even came closer to him. With a few powerful strokes of her tail, she slipped cleanly through the water. Her voice was water-soft when she answered, “Oh. I don’t mind. I like the water.” The smile she offered him was weary but honest. “But I guess I could ask you the same thing. Don’t you think it’s cold?”

He could see the shock in her eyes as he asked his question.. He could see her start to get closer as she replied to his question and could see why she would like the water. He couldn't remember ever seeing a mermaid before, and as a few rays of sunlight fell upon her scales he now believed the stories of their beauty. He was so focused on this fact that when she asked her question, he replied without even thinking. "Nah, it's never bothered me."

He suddenly became aware that he must not look very inviting to the mermaid, and he wasn't being all that polite. He managed a clearly fake half smile. "Pardon, Je m'appelle Kelchek. Oh! rather..." realizing that she was speaking English, "my name is Kelckek." It felt good to talk to someone new, and it helped that he could feel how comfortable she was in the water- although not all that comfortable around him. As she got closer he could feel her confusion. He supposed it could be because of him, but didn't want to frighten her by asking a question about her feelings. It seemed to personal.

Since he said that the cold didn’t bother him, Susie took him at his word. If there was more behind the comment, she missed it entirely. She was rather distracted by how he was staring at her tail. The words were out of her mouth before she could think them through. They were laced with regret. “Oh, no. Not you too. I didn’t – I’m not breaking some other super-secret mermaid pact by talking to you, am I? I don’t – I don’t think I could handle that right now.”

The language he spoke confused her, but she understood when he translated into English – or, at least she thought he was translating. “I’m Susie, but if I’m bothering you – or I’m not supposed to talk to you – I’ll go. I don’t – I don’t want to upset anyone else today.” She sunk further into the water, fighting between the urge to leave and the desire to stay. Just this once, she wanted to hear someone’s reassurances, for someone to say that they didn’t mind, maybe even wanted to talk to her a bit.

Kelchek could feel how distressed the mermaid was feeling. He had not meant to upset her, creating more emotions was the last thing on his list. "Your no bother at all... I'm just having a rough day. But even if your not suppose to talk to me" he said with a more genuine smile, "I can keep a secret! Please don't leave. Unless you have somewhere else to be."

Did he say something wrong? Damn! He thought to himself, he forced himself to look at her face instead of her tail as she sunk deeper into the water. He wanted to talk to her, everything else just sort of vanished around her. He felt more like the water than just in the water. Could this be because of her? It made sense to him, she was a mermaid, but to actually feel more in touch with the water was almost a shock. Taking a leap of faith he decided to test the water- no pun intended- and ask her. After considering for a moment how to word hes question, he asked, "Not being rude of anything, do you feel more in touch with the water being a mermaid?"

Oh. She hadn’t meant to make this all about her. With his mention of a rough day, he caught her back again. Susie could definitely sympathize with that sentiment. Her day…had had its ups and downs. Suddenly, she wanted to be useful to someone else – she wanted to be useful to him. There had to be some way to cheer him up, even if it was only a little. His smile was so sweet when he promised to keep her secrets.

Susie shook her head, sending droplets flying. She tried a smile and found it wasn’t forced at all. “I don’t have anywhere to be at all. Just the lake,” she took a deep breath, letting the serenity of the water sink into her bones. “Just – here.” She knew she probably sounded odd and dreamy, but it’s truly how she felt. Susie wished that she could put into words how the water made her feel – that she could share it with someone else in a way that they would understand. Water was everything.

At his question, she halted the numerous motions she was hardly even aware she was making. He had surprised her into stillness. It was a thoughtful question and it deserved a thoughtful answer. Susie reflected a moment before answering. “I – I don’t know. I don’t know how other people feel about the water.” Susie chose her words carefully, her pacing slow. “It does seem like it a lot.” That didn’t seem sufficient. She wanted to give him some kind of concrete answer. “When I’m on land, I can close my eyes and tell you where the nearest body of water is. All I have to do is stop for a minute and think of where I want to be and then I know where to go. It means, no matter where I go or what happens, I’m never lost.” Susie meant lost in its broadest definition rather than simply the literal sense. Pulling herself out of her reverie, she felt a little silly for having carried on. Her tone changed to something much lighter. “So, I guess the answer is yes.”

Kelckek couldn't help but let out a chuckle as the mermaid splashed him with water. The lightens of the mood made him thrust himself backwards and flip over under the water. As he resurfaced he shook his head rapidly doing what he could to splash her back. He was glad that she didn't have anywhere else to be, but he couldn't help but wonder where else a mermaid could have to be.

He was nervous the second his question left his lips. A tension loomed in the air as he noticed the abrupt stop of her fluid motions, but that quickly dissolved as she almost rambled on about her answer. Her voice was serene as she spoke, he liked that, how genuine she was with her answer. He now had her to thank for this closeness to the water that he was feeling.

"How wonderful it would be if I could breath underwater!" He said excitedly, no trace of sadness left in his voice.

Susie could tell that the man’s mood had lightened. Even if it was only on the surface, he seemed…happier. Or, at least that’s how it felt to Susie. She knew he probably had some reason for being out in the lake, but she couldn’t decipher it and wasn’t going to ask. If he wanted to tell her, that was up to him.

Susie wished he could breathe underwater too! But there wasn’t anything she could do about that. Instead, she attempted to describe how it felt. “It’s not like breathing through your lungs. For one thing, it’s usually colder.” Her tone was slightly teasing, but it was unmistakably friendly. As she went on, she let her head drop back to rest in the water. Leaving only her face exposed to the air, she pumped her tail beneath her like a child on a swing-set. “It feels kinda like letting water run through your fingers.” Susie demonstrated what she meant, slightly parting the fingers of her hand and running it laterally below the surface of the lake. “And it’s not – quite – like tasting it, but it’s not really that different either.” She wasn’t explaining this well. Chloe could have done better. Chloe was good with people; she had said so. Susie righted herself so that she could try to see how the man was taking her musings.

He tried to follow what she was saying, it didn't make all that much sense but it wasn't confusing him. He was overjoyed that he had someone to talk to, and could spend all day just floating here listening to her. "So..." he joked, "You breath without breathing? I can only last several minutes under the water, that's more than a human can at least! I've always found things easier to bare when I'm in the water."

He dunked himself under the water one again. The bottom didn't look too far away, he wanted to see if he could make it. Just as he was about to start swimming further under the water's surface, he realized how rude that would have been. He resurfaced with a twisted thought on his face. He wanted to race! There was no way that he could win, but still, it would be something fun. As long as she wasn't offended by the request. Hmm. He decided to keep the desire to himself.

Head tilted to the side, Susie watched his face while he spoke. Oh. He wasn’t human. She didn’t want to make any inquiries yet – though she was curious – because she knew from first-hand experience the offense that could give. Susie was impressed that he could hold his breath for that long; she didn’t know many who could. And that was one particular skill that did impress her.

When the man unexpectedly dove into the water, Susie stuck her head below the surface to see what had caught his attention. When she was younger, she used to frequently break-off conversations to go for a short swim because she didn’t do well in one place for long. Susie wasn’t at all offended by this sudden departure; she just figured that he worked the same way.

There was some meaning behind the pinched expression he had when he returned, but Susie didn’t know what it was. Maybe he was feeling lost again? This was about as long as she could manage to hold still. She hoped she wasn’t doing the wrong thing, but she needed to move. She had to decide, if she still wanted to talk to him that meant being confined to the surface – no diving. It severely limited her space to play, but that was a sacrifice she was willing to make.

Restlessly, she thrashed her tail against the surface, carefully pointing it in the opposite direction of her company. Splashing without permission was rude. At least that’s what she’d been told. She wasn’t entirely certain she believed it. Flipping over so that she was stretched out stomach down, she began swimming little laps and geometric figures around him. Remembering his comment, she nodded sagely. “Things are better in the lake. It’s like she takes all the worries you have and washes them. They’re still there, but maybe it’s a little easier to deal with them.”

Kelchek watched her eyes widen just a little when he hinted that he wasn't human. He had become so good at glamouring his elven appearance that it had become as natural as breathing. "I'm an elf!" He said raising his hands to his ears. "See?" For the first time in over two hundred years he was perfectly comfortable- even happy- to reveal this secret to someone.

The way she swam was majestic. At last, he thought as she spoke of the lake, someone I can relate to! "Very nicely put." he replied as he watched her swim a few laps around him until he could no longer resist the urge to swim far and fast. "Race?" He yelled questioningly but in an almost demanding tone.

He didn't wait for her reply. He took off in the direction that the mermaid was facing- away from the shore. With a few strong kicks of his legs he forced himself under the water. He moved effortlessly forward feeling as is it were not him that was moving, but the lake that was rushing past him. He didn't even consider how the mermaid reacted until he came up for his first breath. His stomach dropped as he looked behind him. Shit he cursed silently. She was no longer there.

He was an elf! Susie was so glad he told her. She was afraid to ask but she had wanted to know. She stifled the hundreds of questions about elves before they could pass her lips, promising herself that she wouldn’t barrage him with questions.

Susie’s reaction to his challenge was that of a delighted child. But then she remembered the difficulties she’d had only yesterday. Still, he wasn’t a merperson so she could probably keep up. Swearing she wouldn’t forget herself this time, Susie happily sped after him.

She was enjoying herself – she really was, but when she felt the pace start to get to her, she had to drop back. He wouldn’t get far; she’d just take a quick little break. Not needing to surface for air, Susie drifted beneath the water. She flipped on her back and watched the rays of light bend in the prism of the lake’s waves.

Having caught her breath – so to speak – Susie decided it was time to surface. She figured she could probably be able to see which direction the elf had gone from there.

Feeling the water rush over his body felt wonderful, but had it lost him a new friend? Just great! His first, and probably last, mermaid. He fought the urge to just leave. He had been so distant to everyone throughout his life, maybe it was to soon. Maybe she didn't like elves. He lingered in that spot just wondering, not only about his current situation, but also about what came next. Fade away into the forest? Swim to the lake floor and never come up?

No! He would not just give up! There would be plenty of others to meet. But there was something but this girl, something special... Just as he was about to give up and continue swimming, he saw her resurface. He was surprised by how far back she was. Is it possible that they aren't as fast as legend spoke of.

Or maybe somethings wrong. He wasn't close enough to where she was to read her energy. He began to swim closer to her. "Is everything okay?" He had to ask, still slowly moving towards her, "I pray I didn't offend you."

Oh! There he was. Susie pouted. He’d gotten much farther, much faster than she’d intended. She wasn’t really that slow, was she? Distracted by her own thoughts, she almost missed the shift in his expression. Susie was concerned; he had been worried about something. She hoped he wasn’t just acting cheery for her benefit. He could be sad if he needed to be. He had mentioned that he was having a rough day, and Susie hadn’t forgotten it.

“No offense taken,” the mermaid tried to reassure him using the soft, soothing tones she appreciated when she was upset. She even hazarded a shy smile. Afraid that she’d scare him off if she closed the distance, she waited for him to come to her. When he was nearer, she continued, “Nothing wrong either. I’m just…” What was a tactful way to put it? “I’m just tired today.” And Susie felt it - the deep, aching tired that gets to your soul through your bones. All the events of the day had left her feeling raw and open. The lake did a good deal to ease her wounds, but it didn’t erase them. Nor did it make her entirely well either. She wished she was well. She wanted to be able to play.

He felt relieved when she said that she wasn't offended, and made a mental note to ask first before sprinting away next time.

He could feel that she was tired, he could feel his own fatigue as well, but he also sensed something else was wrong. Better leave that for another day. he thought, not wanting to creep her out with personal questions. There was a silence between them, but not the awkward kind but the relaxing just swim there quietly kind.

Just soaking in the rays of the sun and the comfort of the lake was all he could have wanted at this exact moment in time. "Do you want to just swim?" He finally asked. "No talking or beathing rquired, well at least not for you." His smile was genuine as he looked at the mermaid determined to have a little fun.

She giggled at his joke. It was good to talk to someone who didn’t take themselves too seriously. But, as lovely as just swimming sounded to Susie, there were about a million different questions she was dying to ask him. She didn’t know where to start because she was afraid of offending him. Splashing around in small circles, she considered her answer. “I don’t know. Swimming’s fine.” There was more pout to her voice than she’d intended.

Her silence only lasted another moment. Unable to contain herself, Susie suddenly broke down and asked him the first question that came to mind, “Are all elves tall? I met an elf once at home but that was at night. He seemed tall, but maybe he wasn’t. Not if you really have magic. Do you really have magic?” Once started, the words poured forth like a flood. Wide eyed, body trained towards him, her posture showed all the eager vivaciousness of youth. It was the most bubbly she’d been in a long time.

The energy surrounding the mermaid changed suddenly from upset, to unhappy, then surprisingly to bubbly. He was confused at first until her questions began to pour out into the silent air. "Umm... I believe all elves are tall, but I've pretty much spent my life avoiding them." It felt better to be talking than he though, although swimming was still a slight desire. "And I do have magic, mainly my ability to alter my appearance, and the appearance of things around me." He felt the urge to show her, but remembered his ears. "Like my ears! I can also become invisible when I have the trees to draw energy from."

He could see her eyes getting wide with more questions and took her inquiries as a go ahead for some of his own. "I've heard that mermaids can walk on land, Is that true? Can you use any magic? I mean other then sensing water?" He felt excited about being able to open up with her. He was defiantly have more fun with this than he would have swimming. He was talking so freely that he hardly noticed that they were still in the water.

Susie wasn’t certain if she had asked the wrong thing when he mentioned that he stayed away from elves. Maybe it was like her and other mermaids. Scolding herself, she knew that she of all people should have known to avoid that topic. But then he was gesturing at his ears and smiling, so it couldn’t have been all that bad. No permanent harm done, or at least, none that she could tell.

Talking to Susie still meant swimming, though perhaps a different definition of swimming than his. She was in a lake – she couldn’t not swim. Flipping on to her back, she flicked her tail back and forth, causing a series of ripples to dance through the water. Unhappy in any one position for too long, she flipped back over onto her stomach and repeated the process. All the while, she listened to him speak.

Though she was in motion, she was by no means any less attentive. If anything, the opposite was true. No matter which way her body twisted or contorted itself, her eyes stayed unwaveringly on her new companion. Fascinated by his statements, she was barely able to check herself and answer the questions he posed to her.

Happily, she opened her mouth to answer him, but then she remembered. Maybe she wasn’t supposed to talk about being able to walk on land. Her expression fell. But then she turned angry. It wasn’t fair – these stupid rules that may or may not exist. What hold did they have over her? She’d tell him if she wanted to. It was her secret. She could share it if she wanted to. Voice somewhat fierce from her internal battle, she answered him. “I can walk on land. I think most other mermaids can too. I haven’t met that many, but the ones I’ve met can.” She gave his other question some thought. “Hm. I don’t think I can do magic. At least, I’ve never done anything so far. I wish I could.” At the last statement, her voice turned dreamy and far-off. It would be so nice to be able to do magic.

Kelchek slowly tread the water, staying afloat and remaining still with little difficulty. He watched and admired the mermaid as she circled and rolled around most gracefully in the water. He was amazed that even as she moved she never once lost eye sight of him, with the exception of blinking of course. He knew that she was still paying full attention to him, although he didn't quite know how with her constant movement.

Her energies fluctuate rapidly, openness, worry, concern, then boldness. He was baffled at how easy her emotions and mood could change. It seemed as if they were as fluid as her movements, or the water she was so comfortable in.

The way she answered caught him off guard. He wasn't sure if the surprise showed in his face but he wasn't concerned about it. The dreamy tone of her voice we enchanting as she stated her desire to do magic. Maybe he could teach her somethings about energy manipulation, after all it only took several sessions to teach Matthew and he was human.

Matthew. His named echoed though his mind. Emptiness filled his being. He grabbed onto the first thought that crosses his mind and blurted it out. "I could teach you some things if you like!" He couldn't tell if it sounded like an actual offer so he continued. "The ability to manipulate life energy is just like moving water, kinda."

Susie watched as Kelchek’s movements slowed. He was treading water now instead of splashing about. She wondered if it was because of their conversation or if he was starting to feel tired. There wasn’t any point of reference that she could use to predict when an elf would get worn out. Maybe they should move closer to shore just in case. She knew that she needed to head that direction anyway.

Before she could say anything about it, a look of pain crossed his face. It was so clear that even she didn’t miss it. Uncertain of what she could have said to provoke it, she thought back over their chat and almost didn’t hear his next words.

There was something that sounded off. His voice was too cheery, perhaps even a little forced. All Susie had said was that she wished she could do magic, and here he was offering to try and teach her. Maybe magic wasn’t something elves talked about openly. She could have sworn that he was the one who brought up the topic, but she could be wrong. There were so many thoughts and questions floating around her head that it was possible she had introduced it.

Ashamed that she might have made his day worse, Susie couldn’t meet Kelchek’s eyes. She stared down at the water instead. “That’s okay. It’s…” Before she could finish her thought, she caught a movement out of the corner of her eye. Her head turned immediately to track it. There in the distance, it was close enough that she could just make it out. Her expression shifted over into wonder. “Look!” She pointed the direction. “Is that a hippocamp? It looks like one. There are supposed to be some around here somewhere.”

Kelchek was starting to wear down. His mind had been so preoccupied with everything that he hadn't ever had a chance to consider the affects that his motionless sleep would have had on his body. If this fatigue was present before now he wouldn't have known. He didn't feel like moving anymore, at least he could float exceptionally well. He glanced toward the shore and noticed susie looking in the same direction. He couldn't tell if she was thinking the same thing as he, but being closer to the shore would definitely be a good idea.

He could feel the uncirtainty about her. She looked confused and almost worried. What could she be thinking? he didn't really have time to consider this any longer. Her feelings slowly faded from his mind as he became more and more aware of his own state of health. He tried to read the look on her face but she wouldn't look at him.

He felt a little relieved when she spun around and pointed, her voice sounding excited and almost whimsical. "A hippo-what?" He quickly scanned his memory for anything that could define what she said, and came up short. He turned his head to look in the direction he was pointing. Hmmm All he saw was a little splash and the rippling after effects caused by it. He felt like his eyes might be deceiving him but did he see more fins behind that splash?

Had she continued to stare at Kelchek, Susie would have become even more worried over the distance to the shore. But she was too deep into her own thoughts – too busy not looking at him. And then there was the hippocamp. Interesting creatures invariably caught her attention, and its sudden appearance seemed arranged by providence.
“A hippocamp. Don’t you know about them?” Some might have taken the question as rude, but that’s not how Susie intended it. She was surprised that she knew something that he didn’t. Normally, she was the one people had to explain things to. “It’s a water-horse-thing. Like a mermaid, only horse and fish instead of person and fish. They’re supposed to be pretty friendly. Oh, but it’s headed the wrong way.” The delight left her features. She wasn’t up to chasing after it right now. Maybe tomorrow she could find it again.
Susie put a smile back on her face and turned to Kelchek, only to be overtaken by concern. He didn’t look like he was doing too well. She swam a bit closer, just in case he faltered. She wouldn’t touch him yet – not if she didn’t need to, but she’d be nearby if he started going under. “Maybe it’s time we headed back.” Unable to bite her tongue and leave it at that, she added, “Are you feeling alright? You don’t look too good.”

A water horse? Thankful that she wasn't teasing hm for not knowing, he had to wonder if he had even considered anything like that. He truly believed in the Loch Ness Monster, but never considered other creatures of the sort. He would have liked to have seen it closer up but couldn't really do any chasing right now. He was relieved that it was going in the other way, although the disappointment of the mermaid was so pure and innocent. She had said that she was a tad bit tired, hadn't she? He thought trying to comfort himself.

He was doing the best he could to not worry his new friend, but his own concern over his pain made it hard to hide. She got closer to him, he wanted to just reach out and grab her to give himself a break from swimming, but he resisted. It would probably be taken the wrong way... best not start a fight with someone who lives in the water. He nodded in agreement with her. It was time to head back to the shore.

"I think my prolonged sleep has given me sore muscles, but yeah I should be fine." He tried hard to make that last part believable. "I'm just going to dunk under one last time." He took a deep breath and let himself slip under the water. Everything was so beautiful from this veiw point, but he didn't have a chance to notice. He just let the water hold him, somewhat relieving his pain. It felt so good for him right there at that moment.

Prolonged sleep? What kind of nap caused sore muscles? He wasn’t telling her everything. And he said using the same tone she used when she told someone she was “tired” rather than recovering from radiation poisoning – which sounded so dramatic when spoken aloud. Maybe she wasn’t the only one out here pushing themselves too far.

Susie could sympathize with his need for the water. Cleansing emotionally and physically in lakes and rivers was an understandable requirement for life. She didn’t stop him when he decided to dive. It was something she had done often enough.

While he was gone, Susie stared longingly in the direction she’d seen the hippocamp go. She hadn’t gotten much more than a glance, but it had seemed lovely. She took the opportunity to remind herself that there were wonders here that she’d never seen at home. Even if she couldn’t ever return, there were worse places to be. A dark memory tried to surface and she was chilled to the bone before she could stuff it back into its mental compartment. Much worse places to be.

Minutes went by and she wished her new friend would come back and say something fun to distract her. He was taking so long. He had mentioned that he was really good at holding his breath, but this seemed a little excessive. He didn’t need to show off for her. Maybe…. If he was sick, maybe he couldn’t hold his breath as long as he thought. Worried, Susie dove back into the waves to search for Kelchek.

The minutes passed by as Kelchek slowly sank further toward the bottom of the lake. His brain stopped processing the things around him. He would have been worrying about his friends he left at the surface, or even more of his eventual need to breathe, but he wasn't. His eye's stayed open as his vision started to blur, but that didn't matter to him. He had no energy left and the way the lake held him made him feel perfectly at peace.

"........." Nothing. Sweet nothing.

He was suddenly snapped back into reality as Susie's blurred figure came closer to him. Panic took over his mind. Air! Need air! Shit! His body started to thrash uncontrollably, despite the pain. He fought harder and harder to try to make it to the surface, but nothing would work. His legs kicked, his arms waved, he even tried to moving his torso in the way a mermaid would, but it was all in vain.

He could see her getting closer, but everything was processing slower than usual. When he finally noticed that she was right there he forced himself to calm down and reach for her. He didn't want to scare her off. No! The last thing he wanted was for her to leave him, though he didn't have time to consider her state of health. He grabbed her arm, or hand, he couldn't tell which, and prayed that she would not let go. "Please!" He yelled, releasing the last of his air to float toward the surface where he so desperately needed to be.

Susie didn’t see him at first. The water was murky here – darkened by the advanced depth. She swam lower. There he was! Oh. But that didn’t look good. He wasn’t moving. Acting on impulse, Susie sped towards him, tail undulating behind her.

As she neared, the situation changed. He started trashing and was obviously in distress. She raced to his side. She’d ask him what was wrong later. Right now she’d get him to the surface.

She let him grasp her arm, urgency overwhelming her fear of being caught. Instead of fighting him, she latched on to his arm under the shoulder. If he’d only relax, she could help him float to the surface.

His cry for help was muffled in the water, but Susie got the basic gist of it. If the situation were less serious, she’d have rolled her eyes. Of course she’d help. What did he think she was doing?

Instead of trying to answer him – underwater communication was not the clearest in the best of situations – she shook off his hand and grabbed his other arm. Tail pumping furiously behind her, she lifted them back up to the surface.

“Hey, hey, just breathe.” The directions may have been a little frantic. Susie had seen enough death. She didn’t want to lose him too. “Deep breaths now. I’ve got you. I’m not letting you go.” In an effort to calm her scattered nerves, she threw in a little bit of teasing. “Dunno if you had any destination in mind, but I figure we’ll head back to my place for now. It’s not much, but I don’t think you’re in any state to complain.” Arm wrapped around his chest to make certain his head stayed above water, Susie lopsidedly started pulling them back to the docks. Adrenaline ensured they got there.

Kelchek tried to calm down after grabbing the mermaid, but a new wave of fear overcame him as she shook of his hand. He knew he was going to die. Maybe it was better that way, He had gone through so pain, and all he could foresee was more. He was shocked when she grabbed his arm and started pulling him upward. Was this some kind of sick game? He couldn't help but think negatively being so close to death.

He was filled with relief as they reached the surface. GASPS! He breathed deeply the sweet air. They emerged from the water only moments before a certain blackout. He started to hyperventilate feeling like he couldn't get enough oxygen. He felt safe in her arms as her voice told him to take deep breaths. His body went limp as she started to swim toward the docks. He house? He didn't care, anywhere was good, but to open her house to him was very nice.

Her joking tone of voice lightened his mood. He turned his head slightly to show her that he was smiling, even if it was an exhausted smile.

She just saved my life! The thought came as they reached the dock and she aided to hoist him up onto the dock. Wow... His mind was almost in a daze, and then his pain returned. "Merci beaucoup! Thank you so much!" He couldn't express his gratitude enough, not did he have the energy that he wished he had.

He might have smiled during their swim, but Susie didn’t have it in her to really pay attention. She needed all her concentration to keep them headed in the right direction. This kind of swimming was awkward. All she wanted to do at this point was crawl into bed. Holding his head up out of the water was draining and that was compounded to her already difficult day.

Panic filled Susie’s chest as the docks loomed into sight. There was no way she’d manage to get him up onto the steps. She should have taken him to the beach. There was more of a gradual incline there. But the little bungalow was one of the few places she had felt safe lately. It had been only natural to make that the goal.

Using a last burst of energy, Susie increased speed rather than slowing as the neared the dock. If she could time it right, she could use the momentum to hoist him up a couple of the steps. They’d have to figure it out from there, but at least he’d be out of the water. The plan didn’t work quite as well as she was hoping. She did manage to get him up and mostly out of the water, but she banged her shoulder against the wood in the process. Wincing, she swam back to see if he was alright.

She appreciated his gratitude, but Susie didn’t think he should be thanking her quite yet. It had taken nearly everything she’d had to get him up on that dock. He still needed to get into the house and – more importantly – get seen by a doctor. People did not just pass out while swimming. Something wasn’t right.

Susie made a disgusted noise at the stair rail. Whoever designed this dock was not a mermaid. Shifting and climbing up at the same time was difficult. Her arms were tired from carrying him and hurt from where she’d had her run-in. Besides, there was a man on the step. Deciding to just get it over with, she reached for the stairs. With a grunt of effort, she lifted herself up and managed not to land on top of him. Good thing she was small. She fit just barely on the edge beside him. If he had a problem with her state of undress, he could go jump. She was just gonna sit here for a minute until she felt like moving again.

He was lifeless on the stairs. He watched her lift herself out of the water and the smooth transition of her tail turning into legs. He didn't know what he expected to happen but her being practically naked came as a surprise. He averted his eyes, not our of embarrassment, but our of respect, not knowing how she felt about it. He looked around for something that might work to cover her, if she wanted anything, but nothing seemed to be withing reach.

She must have been exhausted. It had been quite a long swim to get here, and the way she practically ran into the dock must have been painful. Painful, that was a word he could use to describe his mood. He had no problem just lying there as she fit herself next to him. Her skin felt cold against his, and he shivered. The water's temperature hadn't even touched him, but with a light breeze blowing across his wet skin, he wasn't very comfortable.

After several minutes he looked back at her. "Does it hurt? When you change I mean." He knew she was most likely not in the mood for casual conversation. He wasn't either. He wanted to go to sleep, but that frightened him, what if he didn't wake up for several months? What if he doesn't wake up at all?

Susie never wanted to move again. Muscles she didn’t even know she had screamed in protest. For a few minutes, it was enough just to lie there.

But that couldn’t last forever. Now that she had changed, she felt cold. The edges of the stairs bit into her back, creating even more aches. And she couldn’t forget the man beside her. He probably needed help. And she would make sure he got it…in just another minute.

But it seemed he was able to recover faster than she – at least enough to start talking again. Taking his words as a signal that it was time to get moving, she started to stand up and answer him at the same time. “Hm. No. It doesn’t hurt.” She swayed a little, unsteady on her feet. “Does it look like it should hurt?” She’d honestly never considered it from anyone’s point of view. And keeping him talking was probably a good thing – meant he wasn’t going into shock, or something. Not waiting to hear out his response, she added, “Do you think you can stand? We’re almost there, but I can’t carry you. If you lean on me, do you think you can make it?” The offer was filled with more confidence than she felt. If he leaned on her, she wasn’t certain she wouldn’t just topple over.

At least it doesn't hurt. He thought, not able to speak before she asked her next question. Considering which question to answer first he pondered her words for a minute before he relying. "Actually it looks quite painful, but its fast," He paused for a few moments to catch his breath before continuing, "nothing gruesome though." Just speaking was draining what energy he had left, all he could do was stare blankly at the sky. But the chill in the air seemed to be getting worse.

Can I stand? Hmmm. He didn't want to even consider it, but his now shivering body forced him to. "Yeah, I can mak..." He let out a groan that cut off his scentence. He raised his hand to his hair to try and shake it out. Things had definitely become more difficult out of the water. "I can make it." He repeated these words over and over in his mind as to reassure and motivate himself, but his muscles didn't respond.

Kelchek closed his eyes and tried to concentrate on the energy, the life, that flowed though his body. He willed it to flow smoothly and sooth his aches, but he wasn't able to. Damn He had never had this trouble working on anyone else, why was it so hard for him to do it to himself? Giving up, he made the first move, as painful as it was he sat up, trying his best not to squish the petite person next to him.

Every muscle in his body fought him. Contracting as he tried to stretch them, not responding while he was trying to use them. He was in unbelief as to how uncomfortable he was. Never in his life had he ever felt this way. Just a little further he scoffed at himself. I can hardly get up... But for the sake of the woman who had saved him he had to.

Susie was exhausted but not desperate – at least not on her own behalf. Kelchek, on the other hand, didn’t seem to be doing well at all. His banter about her tail wasn’t fooling her. Worry filled her eyes as she wondered just how she was going to get him the help he needed.

The worry escalated to panic when he cried out. After that he seemed distracted by the pain. It didn’t stop her. She started and continued to make reassuring claims. “Hey now. It’s okay. I got no where to be right now anyway. Here’s good. We can stay here a while. It’s got a great view and everything.” The words flooded out of her as if she could talk them out of the situation.

Susie scrambled to her feet when he sat up. He didn’t seem too steady and she wanted to be able to maneuver if he started to slip back into the water. They were not going to lose the ground she’d won them. She couldn’t decide if sitting was a good or a bad thing. On the one hand, it meant possible progress towards getting in the house and out of the cold. On the other, he might push himself too far and collapse. And she still didn’t know what was wrong with him. What if this was more than he could take?

“There now, it’s okay. It’s okay.” Susie wasn’t even trying to reassure him as much as herself at this point. “Take it slow. Slow is good. No rush.” A thought occurred to her. If she couldn’t get him inside, she could at least make him a little more comfortable out here. But that meant leaving him alone for a moment. Not sure what to choose, she put the option to him. “Look. It’s probably not too good for you to be out here in the cold. I can run in. Get some blankets.” Because her clothes certainly wouldn’t fit him, even if he was willing to dress in the skirts she tended to prefer. “I can be right back. Practically see you out the window the whole time.” There was no explicit question, but her tone of voice imparted her meaning. She wouldn’t go if he didn’t want her to.

His reflexes were slower than usual as he watched her jump up to steady him. It took him a few seconds to even realize that she had moved. He wanted to be able to move, he wanted to be able to put her mind at ease, but it didn't seem all that possible.

"No, no, I can..." No he couldn't. Slumped over with a new surge of pain surging though him, he felt horrible for the pain he must be inflicting on her. "Go... I'll be fine... I'll just... Wait..." Talking was becoming increasingly difficult. Shit! He could feel the tears welling up in his eyes yet again. He couldn't believe the wreck he was becoming.

All he wanted was sleep. Could he sleep? Should he sleep? Will he wake up? Way to to many questions flooded into his brain. He was starting to become dizzy again. He felt himself on the Verge of a blackout. His body started to shake. He couldn't tell if the mermaid, or girl, or what ever she was, was still there or not. He hunched over, forcing his head closer to the dock as an upsetting feeling arose in his stomach.

This was not good - not good. Susie put out a hand to catch him as he nearly fell over. If she wasn’t so worried about him, she’d think he was being a bit melodramatic. But he sounded like he was in real, genuine pain. “No, it’s okay. See. Here is good. Lovely afternoon. Just us sitting and watching the lake.” What was she supposed to do? She wanted to go get help but there was no way she could leave him. “Here, why don’t you lean against this.” She guided his hand to the railing. Maybe if she could get him a bit more stable then she could get help.

Hoping he was steady enough to keep from sliding back into the lake, she moved the couple of paces to where she recalled hiding her towel. It wasn’t something she normally did, so she had forgotten it was there until this point. It wasn’t a blanket, but it was better than nothing. Susie ran back to the elf and stood hesitating with the cloth in her hands. She could give it to him and it might help or she could wrap it around herself and she might be able to better help him. The cold was really starting to get to her. But she rapidly forgot about what she had in her hands. He looked worse. “Kelchek?” She had to do something.

Every muscle in his body clenched at once as he was no longer able to stand it. He stomach clenched and he hurled up whatever was occupying it. Mostly stomach acid was spewed into the water before him. He stomach continued with it's fit as he dry heaved several more times. Tears ran freely down his face as he felt disgusted and embarrassed. He never liked throwing up, and this time was no exception. When the fits ceased his stomach relaxed, as did the rest of his body.

He didn't think that he could move yet, but he definitely felt better, well, a little better. He sat there on the edge of the dock now with a mental awareness that he lacked just moments before, ashamed of what had just happened. Not just throwing up, but everything from storming away from Adela, to nearly dying. He glance over his shoulder at the mermaid who was now holding a towel in front of her. He wasn't sure if it was for him, but given her state of dress, he figured it was for her covering. She looked cold, he was cold, but he couldn't be as cold as she looked.

Susie was overwhelmed by the sense of concern that rose up in her. The man before her was in a bad state. And she was near panicked over how to help him. There were people nearby; she could call for help. But she knew from when she was ill, the sick didn't always want to draw attention to themselves.

She wrapped the towel around him. It gave her an excuse to pat him on the shoulders. She wanted to reassure him but didn't want to cross any boundaries. Some people didn't like being touched, but the towel acted as a reasonable excuse.

"Look, I'm not leaving you alone, okay? I just need to run inside for a minute. I'll be right back. And I'll get you some water, if you want?" It was freezing. She wouldn't be much help at all if she didn't have a moment to get dressed. Leaving him even for a second wasn't what she wanted to do, but it was necessary. "You just rest, okay? Stay right here." She motioned with her hands. It was a little silly; it wasn't like he was up to rushing off.

Susie moved to marathon through her house and throw on any clothes she could find. Appearance wasn't important. Getting warm was. She wouldn't forget his water nor would she forget a blanket. The weather couldn't be helping him any.

Kelchek was thankful that she hadn't started yelling for help by now. He hated causing a scene -except for intentional ones- and even worse, getting sick in front of people. He was very thankful for the towel being for him, though he worried about her and was hoping that she would have warmed herself up with it. Yes he was pretty cold but his cold tolerance was higher than any one he knew. He felt her warm hand on his shoulder as she placed the cloth over his shoulder and started patting him, it soothed his being to know that she cared, he could sense it in her aura along with a touch of hesitation.

He listened to her talking to him but didn't take in what she was saying until just before she left. "Yeah, okay, yeah" he said as lively as he could, trying to reassure the mermaid. He didn't want to worsen her frantic state. He watched out of the corner of his eye as she disappeared hurriedly up the stairs and into the house, which unless his eyes were deceiving him, looked just like his. Maybe we're not far from my house. He stared out at the lake and watched the surface change to a darker shade as a thick cloud passed over the sun.

All he had to was wait. That's what she had told him wasn't it? But he had a new feeling of restlessness that he couldn't ignore. He slowly reached over to the railing of the stairs and the aches returned to each of the muscles that he used. I have to do this, it would only worry this girl if I tried in front of her, or hurt he if she tries to help and we fall. All he could think about was the well being of his rescuer and permanent new best friend as he grabbed onto the railing and pulled with everything he has inside him. Disregarding the pain he managed to get his body onto his feet and by leaning most of his weight on the rail, just in time to hear the sound of an opening door.

Susie felt horribly guilty taking the time needed to throw on a skirt and sweater. She desperately wanted socks too, but those would have taken precious seconds. Only the essentials. God, Lord she was cold. Normally she had a higher tolerance, but her body was already pushed by the exertion to simply get them to land.

Blankets, he needed blankets. She grabbed one from the pile on the floor. Hopping over to the kitchen at a run, she got the water and the rest of what they needed. Susie was back in under a minute but she still felt guilty.

Her eyes widened in alarm when she saw that he was up. She dropped the blanket, but not the water. Broken glass was the last thing they needed right now. Quickly she rushed to him and ducked herself under an arm, acting as a support. He really shouldn’t be up. “You’re not thinking of leaving me so soon are you? And here I thought we were having fun.” Her smile was weak but friendly. “You think you’re up to taking a few steps? We’d both be better off if we can get inside.”

She was shivering but she didn’t know if it was from the cold or the adrenaline pumping through her body. The latter was not helped by the fact that Susie was now trapped under his arm. And though she had initiated it and she didn’t really think he would hurt her, her body insisted on panicking. The important thing was that she managed not to flinch away.

He listened to her scurry down the stairs and quickly place herself under his arm. He was relieved that he had the extra support, but concerned about her state of health. She had gotten some cloths on at least, and he joking tone lightened the mood of the situation a little, but she felt anxious. She was still shivering, and her aura was going crazy with fluctuations in its energy. They really needed to get inside, then everything would be okay, he hoped.

"Yeah." He breathed in response to her question. He dragged his right leg to the edge of the first step and easily lifted it up, and then came the actual lifting of his body. Not an easy task. He pulled and strained muscles that he was sure most people have never used in their life. He felt accomplished when he managed to get up on the first step. Damn! He cursed at himself realizing that he had put more effort on the mermaid than he ever intended to. He looked down on her still shaking body with worry that maybe he had hurt her, as unintentional as it would have been.

Deep breaths. Deep breaths. Susie had to remember to keep breathing. He had to lean on her to get up the steps. He wasn’t trapping her. He wasn’t trying to hurt her. It was okay. She repeated the thought over and over as her own frantic mantra. She was shaking in earnest now and it definitely wasn’t because of the cold.

Susie tried desperately to keep up a light and easy banter. Joking made it easier. If he sounded light and happy, it meant he wasn’t trying to…just what her fear was, she couldn’t put a name to. She refused. Instead, she spoke. “So, uh, you come here often? Because I haven’t seen you here before. Or were you invisible? If you can change your ears, does that mean you can become invisible too?” She took slow and measured steps to match his pained ones.
