Who: Ralph & Hayate
When: Evening
Where: The wine bar
What: A meeting of like minds

Boredom was what brought him here. Thankfully it wasn't like a club. Ralph hated those things. Enough flashing lights to induce a seizure and music loud enough to invoke a migraine wasn't his idea of a good time. Nice, quiet places attracted Ralph. The empty nook of a library or the calmness of a café were among his prized places to visit. Read a book and sip your coffee in peace. To Ralph, that was the real treat.

The bar bordered on vacant tonight. Any other packed night would've driven him away because crowds panicked Ralph. He walked to the bar and ordered a drink. Ralph paid no attention to the bartender while he asked for a rum and coke. Time away from home was on his agenda this night. It was simple. For now.

He waited for his order and looked at the few visitors in the room. One caught his eye. It was a slight frame blonde. Ralph looked away. His drink came and he sipped it in quiet, but his thoughts nagged him. He looked back.

Ralph never initiated conversation at random. It wasn't normal behavior from him. He always had a reason. Always. Tonight he didn't have a reason. He just had a rum and coke.

He crossed the distance, sat down beside the stranger. Nervously his legs twitched, tapping away at the floor.

"Hello," he said. Usually people looked at who they talked to but Ralph stared down at his rum and coke. Tap tap tap. "Nice night."

Pissed was the only word to properly describe Hayate’s state of mind at the moment. His nose still ached from the treatment Zach doled out on it the day before last, but it was not as if the boy was that strong. Hayate possessed the remedy for a broken nose, for the only trick was realigning it. Given a day of time to heal, the outward bruise was already gone from sight, but the dull, throbbing ache beneath the surface remained steady. The true wounds he sustained from the event were to his conscience and his pride, and those were not going to go away any time soon.

His fingers gently lifted to press against his nose when he heard a voice beside him. Hayate lowered his hand and slowly turned to look at the man, the vitriol in his expression more palpable than the smell of alcohol on the air — and that was saying something. After all, this was a bar.

The interruption had not made the vampire happy by any stretch of the imagination, though he pondered the possibility of being polite simply for the promise of a quick meal afterwards. Hayate breathed in deeply and exhaled to expel the thought. Now was not the time for games. He tried to think of something to say and said the first thing that came to his mind. There were not many reasons for men to approach anyone at a bar, save for one very prominent reason.

“You do know I’m a man,” Hayate told the stranger by his side, looking forward and focusing his gaze on the counter in hopes the man would get the hint and go away.

Ralph finally looked over at the blonde. He blinked in surprise. He had to do a double take to make sure he wasn’t seeing things. Up close things looked a lot different. Ralph’s nervousness increased into rapid foot tapping. Ralph cleared his throat and used determination to stop his foot. This was awkward. He had to say something.

“Does it really matter?” Ralph blurted out, bringing the glass to his mouth. The cold drink was a good distraction. It took a lot of balls to say that.

What’s the worst that could happen? thought Ralph. He downed some of his rum and coke. He gets up and leaves. Big deal.

Ralph was sensitive when it came to socializing though. He was sensitive to rejection and judgment. The drink tickled the inside of his stomach. Ralph let the tingle loosen his cares. He turned on the stool to face the man, laid his arm on the bar. Ralph didn’t turn away this time.

For him it was a very bold move.

Hayate felt his whole body pause along with his mind, freezing up in a short state of confusion. The look of bewilderment to his face was crystal clear, and he glanced over at the strange man who made a show of staring at him. Hayate’s eyes blinked once, and the twice, and he opened his mouth to speak but found no words to accompany his tongue. He closed his mouth and shook his head, turning his gaze away to look at his own drink on the bar top.

“Well, for you, I suppose it doesn’t,” Hayate managed to say. The tone of his voice did not lean one way or the other; it was weak, on the borderline of being uninterested. Some days he had the appetite for games, but today was not one of those days. This was a very unordinary situation. For Hayate, the tables were usually turned with each of them in the opposite’s shoes. Hayate huffed in amusement. It felt nice to be the one capable of ignoring for once.

As quickly as he thought about dismissing it, though, he changed his mind as an idea struck him with the plainness of daylight. Perhaps this man could serve as a use to him. After all, Hayate did like to use people for his own ends. It required talking to him, and Hayate would have to wait and see if the man would stick around for conversation.

“You really thought I was a woman, didn’t you?” Hayate asked, turning to face the man. “It’s an honest question,” he assured. “Don’t feel bad answering it.” Hayate was not ashamed of his features. He was born how he was born, and it worked for him on more than one occasion, so he had reason to be grateful for it.

It wasn’t the answer he half-hoped for. Ralph looked away and swirled his drink around in his hand. He expected the man to leave. He knew annoyance when he heard it. Ralph bit the inside of his cheek. What was I thinking? he asked in his head.

Ralph was surprised when the other man didn’t get up. He chanced a look back. The last thing he predicted was a chat. Ralph guessed it was better than nothing. Better than being laughed at.

He brought his glass to his mouth for a drink. “…Is this a trick question?” asked Ralph. He took a sip of his rum and coke. Ralph’s eyes briefly flitted to Hayate. “I’ll plead the fifth.” He realized he may have been flirting though he wasn’t trying. Hayate was handsome but pretty and definitely more feminine than masculine. Ralph wondered how tall he was. He couldn’t have been more than five feet. And he reminded Ralph of someone else.

Try as he might he couldn’t picture her in a bar like this though.

“Besides,” said Ralph as he shrugged through his confession. “I still would have walked over here.”

Hayate felt a smirk breaking across his face at what he heard coming from Ralph. He closed his eyes and shook his head as he tried his best to figure out how to respond to all of this. It was different for Hayate, which robbed him of his usual finesse. Yes, a part of him was amused, but another part of him knew he had an advantage in here somewhere—and he was going to use it. It was so easy to fall back into his old self and back into his old tricks.

“Well,” Hayate declared, “don’t I feel flattered?” There was a small smile dancing across his lips as he pondered how to make this work. “So, what comes next? Do you buy me a drink, or do I buy you a drink, or . . . ” Hayate leaned over towards the dark-haired man and wondered what his name was. A name would have been very helpful right about now, and he filed into the line of questions inside his head that he meant to ask. “Do we just walk out of here when no one’s looking?”

Hayate’s suggestion appeared to have come straight up from the gutter, but his mind was entertaining tamer possibilities. The tall man seemed more like the pet dog type than the throwaway type, and if so, Hayate might have just found himself the perfect little errand boy. Someone he didn’t have a strong connection to, but someone he still knew. There had only ever been two other men to first show their interest in him, people he might have manipulated for his own benefit, but one of them vanished off the face of the earth while the other one turned into an exasperating enemy.

Hayate needed a new candidate, and he was willing to give it a try with this dark-haired man.

Buy a drink? Ralph didn’t even buy his. Ordering one wouldn’t be a problem though. His foot tapped nervously again. It was bad tick. He wanted to shut it off. He turned to the blonde man just in time to see him lean closer. Ralph swallowed past a catch in his throat. Was it really this easy? Why hadn’t he done this before?

If he knew the other man’s thoughts he would have backed off. Ralph wasn’t anybody’s puppet. He wasn’t a mind reader either so the stranger’s intentions went unknown.

It was sad how starved for attention he was. He downed the rest of his rum and coke and left only ice cubes. Standing up he looked at Hayate. Ralph’s expression said ‘follow me’. He tilted his head at the exit to make it clear. The heart in his chest raced the whole time. What was he doing? Something new to break from routine.

Ralph walked to the exit and looked behind only once to see if the blond followed him. He shoved his hand against the door to open it. A cold gust of air hit Ralph and tousled his hair. If only it awoke his senses.

The nighttime sky sparkled above. Finally the clouds were gone. Ralph slipped his hands into his coat pockets. Damn it was cold.

Hayate smiled to himself as he chewed on his lower lip. It was far too easy with this one, he thought, and he brushed a hair through his hair as he took another drink from his own glass to finish it off. He left it on the counter and trailed in the footsteps behind the taller man leading the way. This man was a good candidate for yet another thing, too. Their eyes connected once as Ralph turned his head to see if Hayate was coming. Hayate felt the corner of his mouth twitch upward into a little smirk.

Once he made it outside as well, the rush of freezing air barely affected Hayate the way it affected Ralph. Hayate had the ability to bear cold somewhat better than his companion tonight. It was one of the perks of being a vampire. He started to walk down the path, knowing Ralph was going to follow him, when it came to mind that he desired to know the man’s name.

Hayate turned around as he walked, his steps continually moving him down the path in a backwards motion. “So, Stranger,” Hayate called out, smiling as he did so, “what’s your name? I should at least know that much, shouldn’t I?”

Ralph hunched against the cold and wondered what he got into tonight. He walked along the road in the company of a stranger. His reasons were less than pure. Moments like this made him wish he could read minds. He wanted to know the other man’s thoughts. What were his reasons? Ralph knew his reasons, but they were nothing alike.

The playful talk surprised him. Without a background of how these things worked he just went with it. Talking was natural. Names weren’t much to ask.

Ralph kicked the pebbles at his feet. He watched them skid across the path and looked up. Something about the stranger made him uneasy. Was it the smiling? The blonde man smiled a lot.

“Ralph.” Ralph lowered his chin closer to his chest. “What about you?”

Hayate considered giving him a fake name like he had given to other people before, but something held him back from doing so. As he took steps backwards, not really watching where he was going but knowing the way, Hayate smiled vaguely in the darkness and answered the question asked of him. “Hayate,” he said, and he stopped walking backwards to right himself in the proper direction, though he walked slower for Ralph to catch up with him again.

“So, where do you live?” Hayate inquired as his gaze traveled over the dark grassy hills. He recalled his day with Adela since it was one of the first days in a long time that he took appreciation in his surroundings. He glanced over his shoulder at the tall man, who blended in so well with the blackness of the sky. “Is it far from here, beyond walking distance?” Hayate thought against leading Ralph to his home. He didn’t know him well enough to allow his privacy to be invaded in such a way.

As he paused his walking long enough for Ralph to reach him, they were soon side by side again. The man was particularly quiet, and Hayate wondered how he was going to get him to talk more than one or two sentences at a time without overwhelming him. Hayate, after all, loved the sound of his own voice too much to not use it so often.

Hayate. It was a nice name. Ralph liked it. He was caught unawares and looked at the other man. He thought Hayate was leading the way. It turned out Hayate expected Ralph to lead the way. Going to his own house was more comfortable for him. Familiar surroundings in an unfamiliar situation would help him keep his bearings. It wasn’t a question, but Ralph agreed to it.

“It’s not far from here,” said Ralph. He already felt his muscles loosening up. Hayate was nice, simple and harmless looking. Talking to him wasn’t so bad either. “A few minutes walk at most. I live by myself.” He thought he should mention that. He didn’t know why.

“So… do you live by yourself?” Ralph had sneaky ways of asking indirect questions. His real question was ‘are you involved with someone?’ but he couldn’t ask it out loud. If he was open to the idea of sleeping with a stranger he couldn’t be picky about the details. On second thought it was a ridiculous question to ask but he had said it and there was no taking it back.

Ralph allowed his footfalls to steer him closer to Hayate so their arms brushed while they walked.

If the small measures of openness from Ralph during their conversation was anything for the vampire to go by, it was going better than Hayate could have hoped for back at the bar. He had no protest to Hayate’s suggestion, which put the vampire at ease. Hayate did not even plan on spending the night, let alone going into Ralph’s cottage. With another idea in mind, he smiled secretively to himself and answered the question lingering on the air.

“Yes, I live by myself,” Hayate told him, the corner of his mouth quirking upward in what could only be described as a smirk. He thought he knew everything going on here until Ralph closed the distance between them as they walked down the path. Their arms bumped each other, and Hayate shot a curt glance at Ralph’s face. Well, he really was expecting something tonight. Hayate did not have to read minds to know that; he could read it in the simple gestures of Ralph’s body.

It was not long before they reached the cottage in question. Hayate slowed his footsteps to see where Ralph’s feet would take them, and his eyes gazed with interest at the cottage Ralph’s tall frame made its way towards as the other man walked a few steps ahead of Hayate. The vampire, grinning now underneath the moonlight, cut ahead of Ralph and reached the doorway. He leaned against the side of the house and crossed his arms, his tongue flicking out to run along his upper lip.

“I take it this is your house,” Hayate said with a tinge of amusement in his low voice.

Ralph walked to his cottage. He looked down at his feet when Hayate rushed ahead of him. A breeze passed his side and he looked up. Surprise hit him first and then a smile came to his face when he saw Hayate leaning next to his front door. Ralph’s eyes fell to the motion of his tongue. He watched it, looked up. Ralph swallowed nervously. He looked down again and finished the steps to his front door.

“Yeah, this is my house.” Ralph pulled out a key to unlock the door. He liked locks. They kept people he didn’t want inside out of his home. Thieves and curious children. Ralph had privacy he intended to keep. Hayate distracted him while he fiddled around the lock. The stranger smelled nice. Ralph’s sense of smell wasn’t shot.

Ralph stumbled as he worked the lock. It was on purpose because he bumped into Hayate thanks to it. He grabbed the wall behind the short blonde to steady his feet.

“Sorry,” apologized Ralph. He was dangerously close. He wasn’t sorry. He meant for it to happen. It took every fiber of his being not to throw it all away in his yard. Night or not somebody could see it.

Normally, Hayate did not like surprises sprung on him like that out of nowhere. It often put the vampire on edge and invoked a primal need to fight, but for some reason, he found himself in much different situation than that with Ralph. The dark-haired man was attractive, though, and he grasped onto Ralph’s arm amidst the slip. Their faces were extremely close, and Hayate decided to throw caution to the wind for just a moment. Nothing was being sacrificed for the small instant of pure pleasure he could snatch out of the situation, ulterior motives under the surface or not.

He rose up to capture his lips in a kiss, snaking a hand behind the other man’s neck. Ralph was tall, and even with him leaning over Hayate, the vampire had to reach up on his toes just to meet Ralph’s mouth. He smiled into the kiss, parting his lips and beckoned for it to go further. Of course, the door was already open and they could go inside, but Hayate was not interested in using Ralph tonight. Well, perhaps he was, but in a completely different way than a physical exploit.

Ralph didn’t expect a kiss. It was an invitation but Ralph still thought he’d have to do it. He assumed Hayate wouldn’t act. Hayate surprised him. The shorter man reached up and pressed their lips together. The fingers tickled his neck. Ralph opened his mouth, instinctively touched his tongue to the other man’s. His head swirled. He was lightheaded from the kiss.

He hadn’t kissed anybody in ages.

It wasn’t as hard as he thought it’d be. Ralph thought taking a person home was an unwinnable challenge. He expected rejection. Ralph always expected the worst. Good things didn’t come to him. Easy things didn’t happen to him. This was good and easy to get.

Ralph grabbed Hayate by the waist. Though harmless looking the smaller man was strong. He had a strong grip on Ralph. Ralph stepped backwards into the open door. He wanted to go inside. It was cold out here and his house was warm.

Hayate felt the pull of Ralph’s arms taking him over the threshold of the doorway, and he maneuvered his way out of the embrace, which broke off the kiss quite abruptly. He knew it had to have been confusing for Ralph, to be kissed and then to have the person who initiated the kiss drag away, but Hayate had bigger ideas in mind than a simple one night stand tonight. Laying a hand on Ralph’s shirt, his fist grasped onto some of the material as a small smile overcame his lips. Hayate gazed up at the dark brown eyes above him and hoped this would go smoothly.

“I have a better idea,” he proposed, letting the words slowly roll off his tongue. “I have to go home tonight. It’s late, and I have somebody waiting for me, but . . . ” Hayate’s hand fell lower and lower down Ralph’s side, grazing over his hip through the fitting jeans. “You say you like both, and my girlfriend and I are looking for a third partner to join us sometimes.”

Reaching into the pocket of his slacks, Hayate pulled out a square piece of paper no bigger than the size of a business card. Carefully, he slipped the paper, which contained his address on it, into one of Ralph’s awaiting hands. Hayate closed the man’s fingers over the paper, biting back a knowing smile that danced across his lips. “In fact, I’d like it if you came over tomorrow night to meet her . . . and maybe something more can come out of it? Of course, it’s your decision.”

Ralph started because of the hasty break. He stared at Hayate. So he did have a partner. But it wasn’t just any partner it was a girlfriend. Ralph figured he should be jealous but he wasn’t. Hayate was a stranger. The revelation didn’t shock him or ruin the moment. It was kind of exciting. Knowing he could pull someone in a relationship all the way to his doorstep.

The preposition shocked him though. Ralph’s eyes narrowed to show his disbelief. A threesome? he thought. Ralph didn’t know his feelings on the matter. Did he want to participate in one? Ralph thought it sounded like a fun fantasy. He never seriously thought it might come to life for him.

He accepted the paper, looked down at it. He looked at Hayate again. Ralph worried his lip between his teeth as he made a decision. He nodded his head.

“Sure,” said Ralph. He tucked the paper away. “It sounds fun. Tomorrow night?”

What if Hayate stood him up? The address a fake? Could he trust him? Ralph silenced the questions by scratching his head.

“You’ll be there?”

“Of course I’ll be there,” Hayate chided with a smile on his lips. “I live there.” Hayate saw the doubt in the other man’s eyes and felt particularly amused by it. He had no reason to find it amusing, and yet it tickled the vampire to see Ralph judging the offer with so much scrutiny. He must have given off an untrustworthy vibe, or perhaps they knew so little of each other that it was easy to judge. Hayate could have been disappointed and blowing him off, and Ralph was clearly considering the possibility.

“My girlfriend and I will both be there,” Hayate added next, leaning in close to Ralph to much sure the words made a strong impression on the man. Hayate tilted his head to his left, exposing his neck as he gazed upward at Ralph. “You can say no if the word is on the tip of your tongue.” The vampire thought he might as well give the man an easy way out in case he decided he wasn’t comfortable with a threesome. He knew there were people who would jump at the opportunity, but there were also people who needed a little coaxing to get through the door.

Ralph had an opportunity to say no, but he’d be crazy to turn it down. He had nothing to lose. He showed up and it was fake or he showed up and it was real. Nothing changed or he got a break. He didn’t have to think about it. Ralph knew what to say. He was saying yes.

“No.” Ralph shook his head. “I… I’ll say yes.” Ralph watched Hayate. The paper was crackly in his pocket. Ralph kept his hand around it. He was afraid he might lose it.

“Tomorrow night,” said Ralph. He repeated it to keep it fresh. Hayate knew the time. He knew the time. Tomorrow night they’d see each other again. Hayate’s girlfriend would be there too. Ralph bowed his head. He took a step backward into his house. Ralph looked up at Hayate and bid him goodbye through a silent look.

Ralph closed the door. It shut with a click. He closed his eyes. What had he gotten into this time?
