Monday: February 11, 2008 Who: Zach and Hayate [Narrative] When: Night Where: Around the town cottages. What: Hayate tells Zach he let Dante out.
Zach resolved himself to talk with his girlfriend at last. He had been stubborn for long enough, and he knew they had to talk sooner or later. If he was going to go and avoid her like this, he might as well pull the plug on their relationship—which was something he didn’t want to do. The only thing left was for him to face up to recent events and speak to her again. For some foggy reason, his thoughts were laced with apprehension at the idea of discussing it with her, but it was unavoidable. Adrienne probably had questions on her mind, and he simply couldn’t go on dodging them in this manner. He already looked like a prick for his actions so far, and he knew he had hurt her feelings over it.
With his hands shoved deep into his pockets and his jacket zipped all the way up, he made his way through the grassland between the cottages to Adrienne’s house. He wasn’t bothering with the paths, and it took less time when he just cut his way through in a straight line. He spotted a familiar figure up ahead on his walk, and while he could have stayed silent and continued on his way to Adrienne’s place without any interruptions, Zach didn’t think much of a quick meeting with a relative.
“Hey, Hayate!” Zach called out. He was grinning at the sight of Hayate and waving his hand in the air to catch his attention. Hayate turned to the source of the sound as Zach jogged over to his side. A small detour wouldn’t hurt; after all, he was glad to see Hayate free again. “How are you doing?” Zach asked with a smile on his face.
It was strange how Hayate wasn’t quick to greet him, and Zach felt the smile fall away from his features. Hayate just paused from his walk to stare at Zach as if he wasn’t quite seeing the boy. Something was out of place. Zach thought about asking what it was, but he decided against it.
“I’m alright,” Hayate finally answered.
Zach nodded his head. “I just thought I’d say hi. It’s good to see you out and about again. I was thinking something bad was going to happen, but I guess I was just worrying too much.” He chewed on his bottom lip, a nervous habit he had developed a long time ago. “I’m going to see Adrienne.”
It was then that Hayate’s face changed. The faraway look in his eyes became solid, and he raised his chin. “About that . . . ” Hayate began, though his voice trailed off and he didn’t finish the thought right away.
Zach narrowed his eyes at his uncle. “What about it?”
“She’s gone.”
It sounded like a joke. Zach smiled skeptically, the corner of his mouth twisting upward. “What do you mean, she’s gone?”
“I mean she’s gone,” Hayate announced. The tone of his voice was eerily quiet. “She’s not here anymore, and it’s time for you to let her go.”
“Wait, why is she gone?” It wasn’t funny anymore. Panic flooded Zach’s heart, and he walked right up to his uncle to face him. “What are you talking about? Where has she gone? You tell me right now.”
As soothingly as he could, Hayate placed his hands on Zach’s shoulders and looked him dead in the eyes. “Dante took her.”
Those were not words Zach wanted to hear. He shoved Hayate away from him with a force stronger than either of them anticipated, pointing his finger at his uncle. He didn’t believe this. He didn’t want to believe it. “Dante is locked up! How the hell is that possible! He’s in jail! He’s been in jail!” Zach was pacing, gesturing wildly with his hands. This wasn’t happening. This simply wasn’t happening.
“I let him out.”
Zach stopped pacing, his feet falling still with the rest of his body. Four little words were all it took to cause the foundation of his beliefs to crumble underneath his feet. His ears rang hollow like the echo of bells going off around him in high-pitched frequencies, blocking out every other sound. Zach remained still like a statue, and it felt as if his heart stopped too for one fateful moment.
Hayate reached out and laid a hand on Zach’s shoulder. In one violent movement, Zach was brought back to reality as he swung at Hayate. He kept swinging. He landed one punch on Hayate’s mouth, another on his nose, and he kept pummeling him with a blind rage fueling his actions onward.
Hayate should have fought back, but he didn’t fight the boy back. He would have hurt him far worse than Zach could hurt him, and if he needed to get it out, then Hayate would let him get it out. The funny thing was he thought Zach might have broken his nose, and he felt the blood trickling down his face. He was on his knees, and then he was on the ground.
Suddenly, Zach’s fist halted in mid-air. He was looking down at his uncle, a man who he had just beaten up pretty damn good, but something was wrong with the picture. He was wasting his time out here when he should have been looking for Adrienne. Zach let go of Hayate’s shirt, and kicked him away. It was all so surreal. He thought he was dreaming, but it could have just been the adrenaline pumping through his veins.
Zach tore off through the sparsely planted trees, running as fast as his feet could take him. He ran straight to Adrienne’s house, even though she wouldn’t be there when he arrived at her doorstep. Adrienne was long gone with Dante, and the chase had only just begun.
