Who: Desdemona and Hugh
When: Evening
Where: Leaving the Town Hall
What: War of the lawyers

Maybe it was sick to feel a flutter of excitement in her stomach about the current events going on, but Desdemona didn't care. How often did she have a chance to do her job in the sanctuary? During the time when she was idle she should have been making the promise to herself that she would socialize more often. But she was too occupied with the information she was getting. Not to mention she was laughing her ass off at the rumors. It wasn't hard for people to believe what they heard. She was almost tempted to add a little fuel to the fire, but she was way more mature than that.

She was walking out of the Town Hall when she noticed Hugh, someone who was much more anti-social when it came to talking with her of the politics of the situation. Of course there was the huge chance that he just didn't like the witch. A smile grew on her face. How lovely it was for both of them to meet up. Nothing like pestering a Prosecutor in the Evening.

Desdemona sped up and hooked her arm into his as if they were best friends. Shortly after, she spoke with confidence. "Shall I buy the drinks when you lose this case? Or maybe a teddy bear? You look lonely."

in Hugh's case, he was rather annoyed, worried and concerned about the current case in Elysium. There really shouldn't be any need for his profession in the haven though that would make his life miserable. On the plus side, that would mean that there was nothing severe enough to really need him. Sure, maybe there would be need of his consulting if there were some small crimes, but the current events were troubling and caused him to actually have to socialize with people on the Vice Council. He really didn't care to get to know them in all honesty. Hugh really wasn't a bastard. He just got annoyed hearing people's voices for a prolonged period of time when really he just wanted to look at documents and evidence he was permitted to see by his lonesome. Yes, he wasn't the sit and chat sort of guy when it came to matters such as this. This gave the impression that he was anti-social and uncaring. Some of that was indeed true.

He left the Town Hall irritated about how he felt a little screwed that there was supposed "news" about another attacker. That had him a little fucked in honest terms. The sociopath was in the dungeon, yet another event happened? Well, he could sense the arrogance from a certain attorney from miles away. She knew that caused him to need to scramble around for better evidence. He didn't scramble like an idiot, but he did have constant thoughts revolving in his head.

The vampire sensed someone behind him and before he could even look, he was arm and arm with the very lawyer he was somewhat avoiding because in honest terms, she was an arrogant bitch. He played the game for a moment and kept his arms in hers.

"Your low self esteem astounds me." He then slid his arms from hers and found his lighter and shortly after lit up a cigarette. "You're wasting your time. I'm not going to talk about it."

In reaction to Hugh's comment about Desdemona's sense of confidence about her, she simply smiled. "Yes, I know. I really need to work on that. I'm starting to cry myself to sleep." How predictable. She knew it wouldn't be long before the edgy Prosecutor stepped away from her. In reaction to this, she gave a mock pout and wasn't afraid to stay close to him while trying to get him to talk about the situation at hand. How could he not find this exciting? He was acting like someone was cracking his spine. The don't ask, don't tell thing was getting awfully boring.

The witch gingerly took the cigarette from Hugh's mouth and crushed it under her heel. Maybe that would get him talking just a bit. Believe him, she had tons of other ways to get him to at least argue with her. She wanted to see what he was made of.

"How can you not talk about it with me? If we're going to be arguing about sending someone to jail in public, we may as well have a little test run. It's not like you have to reveal all your tactics to me."

There was a small chuckle, throaty and insulting alone before she even spoke. "If you have any." Desdemona made sure to keep up with him, since she was sure he was going to try and walk faster. This was too fun of a game to let him go.

"Yes, I can hear your weeping leaking into my living room. Keep it down." She was worse than a mosquito. All Hugh wanted was to get the hell away from Desdemona and she upscaled to a wart. He wouldn't even let his mind go into what else she would be that was more intrusive to the body. The point was, she was uninvited and he wanted her gone before she followed him all the way to his house. The last thing the vampire needed was the witch to taunt him in the once comfort of his own home. He wasn't ignorant to her excitement about the case. She was like a kid in a candy store.

His annoyance almost reached its peak when she slipped the cigarette from his mouth. "Honestly, how childish are you? Do you really think that taking away my cigarette is going to inflict some sort of a different outcome to what I just said? I don't want to discuss this case with you. At least not right now. Especially in public. It might not be in the middle of the day, but there are people around. Plus, you ruined even a small percentage with your childish behavior." Maybe he and her especially didn't get along because of their age gap. He was thirty-seven and he recalled her being in her mid to late twenties. Not to mention, he wasn't going anywhere for quite the while.

Desdemona's kick between the legs about his tactics actually made him smile. "If you're digging to see if I have any tactics, are taunting me and are acting like you have this case in the palm of your hands, then maybe I shouldn't have as many doubts as I thought I should." He revealed.

Oh, Hugh had better believed that if he led her to his house, she would hand him wake up calls every day and do anything and everything obnoxious to help out with her boredom. Not just on days when there was a juicy case flying around. This town wasn't doing it for her. But if she had someone to fulfill her days, why not make the best of it?

When he questioned her maturity, she simply let a small laugh, almost a giggle slip from her lips. "Oh come on now. Don't be such a poor sport. I just have a gene you are missing. The one you use to banter about." She then sighed when he continuously turned them talking about the case down. "Public Smublic. People have their heads up in their own asses about what they want to believe. People don't care about the boring facts. They like the juicy fabrications." Giving a pout, she folded her arms. "I'm so saddened that I ruined my chance to have a discussion with you, though I'm sure you just threw that in my face."

He had a good counter attack about her shamelessly going after his tactics, she was surprised. "Wow, you actually made a strong come back. I should break out the champagne."

Hugh should have felt horrible for laughing at what Desdemona said, but she was correct in saying that the people loved lies more than the truth. They would rather hear that some crazed madman was eating humans alive than hear that someone was already in custody. Maybe they just wanted some excitement. If it meant rumors that sacrificed their safety then so be it. Why not just get a job in the Market? Hell, he would never know.

"I suppose you're right. People are rumor whores around here. One wrong word and the town seems to go crazy. Poor people, can't blame them. Not much happens. If it does, the Council does an excellent job of taking care of it."

He threw a roll of the eyes towards the lawyer. "Please. I hate champagne." Not that he could taste it anymore. It was bland and more boring than it was before.

Desdemona turned towards Hugh with a menacing smile on her face and though in the back of her mind she knew that what she was going to say was horrible, she still said it. "No, but you love blood." She walked closer to him, so close she could feel how cold he was. "You need blood." She touched his face for only a moment before she drew her hand away and turned away from him. She had to lure him into the conversation. Let him feel angry, maybe even hurt before she continued. "You drink it like I drink wine. It's a necessity to function my dear."

She inspected her nails and reveled in the silence before she continued. "I don't know Hugh. Does the Council know you are a vampire? Will you be able to handle it when a vampire questions your morals? Just think about it. You and Hayate are the same. Vampires. What if you did the same thing? How do you know that this Hayate-this supposed monster is really just some poor misunderstood sweetheart that had something set him off? What if he is the victim of this all? What if he was somehow driven insane?

She almost gave him a mocking, tender warning. "I'd be careful Hugh. Your almost dipping yourself in poison."

Desdemona was a vile creature. One moment she could actually make you feel comfortable and could be tolerable and the next moment she could go where she didn't belong. Hugh felt a sudden fit of anger burst from within his chest but he was able to suppress it. The hurt that blossomed afterwards was a little too much to bare though. "You...are unbelievable." He hissed. It was better to seem hurt and almost flabbergasted than angry. "I have a little thing called self control. Don't try and pull the misunderstood shit on me, Durden because let me tell you." He wasn't afraid to go up to her though she did feel like garlic to his skin.

"Do you really think people are going to find someone who attacks people like it's a joyride misunderstood or sympathetic? Let me guess, the insanity plea? Clearly he's insane and if you even think we are in the same category morals wise then you are sadly mistaken. He probably enjoys his sick little life as a vampire unlike some other people. It's not like the movies where it's supposedly a whole lot of bloody fucking fun."

Now he was beginning to get angry and he tried to sooth it by rubbing the back of his neck. "How did you become a lawyer anways? You just belittle and manipulate your way until everyone and anyone felt so horrible, so annoyed, they just couldn't take it anymore. So you finally got the title?"

"Probably Hugh. This whole case is based on probable cause. Which means that once we get this trial going, I can win alone by the probabilities. Probably he was driven mad by something we will never know about. Probably he had a reason for his rage. Probably he is a killer. But unlike one female who is a so-called credible victim, we weren't there to assure his innocence or his guilt. Witnesses are a very valuable thing and the only witness there is happens to be whomever found the poor young woman. But he didn't see the locked up vampire that probably attacked her. For all we know she could be making him out to be more of a monster than he is just to see him behind bars. There is a lot to consider. How do we know she is not prejudice Hugh? How do we know that there is not something in her past that makes her not favor vampires? I will tear all of your greatest values for the trial to shreds. I will make this vampire look sympathetic. I will make those who know him show that he can be a good man and he will roam free." She was calm at this time before Hugh began his accusations about her.

But when he claimed she was only a lawyer because of her behavior and antics, she got dangerously close to him. "I became a lawyer because I am damn good at what I do. Don't get all pissy because I fight for the bad guys or the presumed guilty until innocent. I'm malicious and you can't take it. I have a bigger set of balls and that bothers you. I understand that, but don't you fucking dare go after my job profession. I got it just as well as you did." There was venom in her voice now, a threatening cloud of air circulating around them.

"You're sympathetic. Is that how you got to keep your job? They see a lawyer who is both stern yet has his own demons so they know he can wrap up cases with moving closing arguments and touching personal stories for his clients?...pathetic." She spat at the vampire.

Before Desdemona reacted to his accusations about how she became a lawyer, he laughed at how she was almost boasting about how she was going to win the case regarding Hayate. "By the way you so passionately speak about cleaning up this case I imagine you sitting in the dungeon with him. It's almost like you don't care about the people he killed, or injured. Oh, I'm sorry probably killed. I get that you don't give a damn. But a little sign here and there that you have a heart would be nice." He never got along with defense attorneys, but the cold heart she had nearly made him sick at times. She never even showed a sign of sympathy. All he saw were expressions of anger and arrogance on her face. If not always, then at least more than most of the time.

"Bravo for you planning on making a sociopath look like a sweet little kitten. Make him look like he loves dogs. I love a challenge. But it seems like you're in this more to target hurting my feelings more than anything else." That was Hugh's last statement before she got into a hot fuss about what he had said about the witch.

The vampire wasn't afraid of her when she got close to him. After all, he was the one with the canine teeth. In fact, he was almost smiling. But Hugh kept his amusement behind crossed arms and an almost neutral look. She really went all out on insulting him and though he felt a pang of being a little pissed off, it went away quickly. When Hugh believed Desdemona was finished, he finally chuckled.

"Oh really? Because when I am around you, your arrogance, ignorance and all around personality just makes me sick. It probably made your superiors sick, the people around you sick. Everyone was just so sick and tired of your little high horse antics that like me, they were tempted to throw in the towel because the manipulation, the low shots and vicious remarks behind the scenes gets old and unprofessional. I keep my playing cards and hard remarks for the trial. If I need to have a conversation with opposing council I don't fight like two children fighting for the same toy. We talk casually, like normal people. You seem to lack that quality. So, I think you got your job profession because you're uniquely immature and you know how to hit all the right places to manipulate and intimidate people. I highly doubt I'm sympathetic. I'm just old fashioned and don't believe in boasting, threatening or just being a downright cold hard bitch. If that makes me pathetic? Then so be it."

That felt incredibly good to say and Hugh wanted to let out a relieved breath. But instead he glared at her. He was ready to continue there little vicious combat used only through words.

"Hugh, I'm sorry that we all don't have such pathetic bleeding hearts. We can't always give a damn about what we do and how that affects the outcome. That's how I work. I'm sorry if that makes me a monster in your books. However.." She smirked. He was pissing her off so she would go back to the depths of bringing back who he was again. "I'm not the one who can portray being a monster on the outside. So I would be careful how you see me and describe me because I'm not the one who drinks blood and has teeth sharp enough to pierce ones skin."

At first his statements didn't sting. The whole kitten comment made her laugh. "Oh, why thank you. The right moment will come when I crush you. Don't think that just because I can't contain my anger as well as you can, this will affect the case. You're right. I will make him seem as harmless as small animal or child. Hmm, Hugh. Perhaps you do know parts of me better than I suspected."

Then he went to far. Accusing her of getting her job because everyone around her was sick of her. She got people money, power and she made her firm respectable. Sure. She wasn't a main partner but she would have made it there had the virus not taken control over the world. She would not be called immature because she was quite advanced in her profession. Maybe with bantering with this man, but she was not a woman who got her job through the ways the vampire was describing.

The only way she could let her emotions go was by slapping him, the sound echoing into the evening air. "Don't you dare accuse people of being sick of me. I made my law firm you bastard. I made them crave me for their cases because I got them money. I got them conquered cases and though yes, people probably thought I was a cold hearted bitch I was still amazing at my job. Don't make it sound like I never did my job. I did it well. My tactics will make you wish you burned in hell the minute the vampire sunk his teeth into that pretty little neck of yours."
