Who: Midori and Hayate
When: Evening
Where: Town Hall Dungeon
What: Silence of the Foxes-- Erm, Midori interviews Elysium's resident psycho vampire in custody

Italics = Japanese dialogue

Hayate.

It was the name that was on the lips of many citizens of Elysium. The man thought to have committed the string of maulings and murders over the past few months.

Midori wasn't sure what to think. She had no strong opinion on vampires herself. Oh, they were fairly vile creatures (most non-Kitsune were), but the drinking of blood was not an issue with her. It was simply a fact of their biology. She would have to meet the man-- to look him in the eye-- before she made judgments.

She had researched what the Head Council and Elven guards had on the man, on his alleged attack on Sanura Hart. She had not consulted her fellow Council members on the matter yet. Midori had no need to discuss things as a committee. It would just be a waste of her time. She had dealt with this sort of thing before.

For the past few hours, she'd simply observed the man. She'd kept her distance, stood with the guards. She saw the young blonde girl visit him. Chris Jung. She was in the reports on Hayate. Injured recently while Hayate was in custody. She was quite devoted to him, it seemed.

The time for observations had passed. She had no idea if her fellow Vice Council members had visited him, but she did not care. She needed to speak to the man.

Dressed in a primp green kimono, her dark hair swept up, she strode down the stone corridor to the vampire's cell. "Hayate-san." Midori bowed her head slightly in greeting, but kept a careful eye on him. "I apologize for the familiar greeting. I'm unaware of your family name. You are a man of some mystery. In fact, the only thing really known about you is what you allegedly did."

She pulled herself back up to full height-- while still short, her air of superiority made her seemed taller. "My name is Kamiyama Midori. I am from the Vice Council." She paused momentarily, cocking her head slightly. "Are you more comfortable with Japanese or English? Japanese is my personal preference." She glanced down the corridor. "It has the advantage of keeping the conversation between just us."

The language she used was incredibly proper, formal, almost old-fashioned. While conveying her authority, it also gave the illusion of respect for Hayate. It was simply an illusion, but there was nothing to be gained by treating the man with hostility from the outset.

Hayate noticed the woman watching him from the corner of each his senses, but he had no reason to pay attention to it every passing moment. People were watching him all of the time down in this hole, and he had grown used to the sudden wave of attention. It probably was not anything of importance, or she would have made her presence known. The visit with Chris had come and gone, and he was alone in his cell once more with nothing but the company of two silent Elven guards.

Apparently, it was of importance. She strode down the dark corridor a long time after he first took note of her and admittedly some time after he had forgotten about her. He was sitting upon the bed, leaning against a grainy wall and wishing his accommodations were cleaner than this. It was foul in the depths of this dungeon, but it did not look as though anyone cared for his comfort in the midst of things.

He had to admit that she caught his attention with his mother tongue. Few people spoke it here, and Hayate experienced most conversations in English. It was a change of breath to hear Japanese again.

Hayate contemplated whether he should return the politeness of her greeting. Finally, he decided to bow his head slightly in her direction, though he did not bother to stand before doing it. “You’ll have to forgive me if I don’t keep up with all of the pleasantries,” Hayate commented. A sly smile crossed his lips. “Western ways have tainted me.” Well, it was not Western as much as it was insanity, but Hayate hardly saw the difference.

His head rose as he looked at her from across the distance. “I have no family name,” he informed her. “I was born in a time when peasants weren’t given such luxuries.” He held up a single finger, the rest of them folded down. “However, I do have a bastard last name forced onto me around the time when they made it a law to have one. Would you like to know it?” He barely waited for her to answer before continuing himself. “Ishikawa,” he said. “Though I do prefer Hayate.”

He stood up from the bed, remaining still for a moment before approaching the bars. “Japanese works just fine,” Hayate told her.

Midori's lip curled in disgust at the scene around her. It was not the man, but the state he was forced to exist in. He was unkempt, underfed. No matter what he had done, it was still a deplorable condition. She let out a haughty sniff, rolling her eyes. "Western ways are known to do that. It is why I have always ignored the encroachment."

She approached the bars, wrapping her delicate fingers around them. "Before the time of last names? Really?" That made him even older than her. Despite that, she saw him as younger. It did not matter his chronological age. He was a boy in her eyes. "Hayate-san you will remain then. A name should not be forced by law."

She cocked her head once again, eyeing the slender man. "You are a vampire. You live off the blood of others. But psychopathy is not an attribute biologically encoded into your kind. This is something the Head Council and the Elven Guard-- for all their flaws-- knows. So do not use your mutation as an excuse. Why do they believe you are responsible for the attacks on the citizens of Elysium?" She leaned in. "From my observations, you are quite intelligent. You must have a theory. You have been targeted for some reason." She paused for a moment. "Because-- of course-- you did not do what you are accused of." There was a slight arch to her eyebrow and her voice was tinged with contempt on the final sentence.

She showed interest in his age, and Hayate wondered how old she had to be herself. Granted her looks were nearing middle-age, she still could not have been very old. Few things lived as long as a vampire and, though Hayate was not very well-versed in the many species upon this earth, he did at least know that much about them. Midori was polite enough to refer to him by the name he preferred, a move which denoted intelligence as much as civility. He liked that about her already.

Hayate listened to her, and he liked her all the more as she continued to speak. He thought to debate with her on the matter of vampirism and psychopathy, but something else she said caught his attention even more. It actually caused genuine surprise to light up the vampire’s blue eyes. “Citizens?” he asked. “Multiple attacks?” Hayate moved quickly to the bars, grabbing them. “I’m being accused of multiple attacks?”

This was news to Hayate. They only charged him with one attack. Now, there were multiple ones?

“Why has no one told me of this? I’ve been told I’m being held on an attack upon some girl who’s been tortured, but I have not been told of anything else.” Hayate shoved himself away from the bars, walking a slow circle inside of his cage. “How can things be going on that I have no news of, no information on? Is there any fucking justice in this place!”

Midori kept a cool air of civility while speaking with Hayate. Her expression remained nearly completely impassive, only the occasional hint of curiosity managing to show in her eyes. She was well-practiced at interview people. She showed enough emotion to not seem utterly emotionless, but she was still quite stony.

She didn't not wish to show all her cards, as it were. She needed Hayate to slip up. To reveal if he was involved in any of the occurrences. But he had asked her outright and she had to share at least some of her investigation. "Certainly you have heard of the attacks in Elysium. The mutilations of animals. The deaths of Simon Myles, Eliza Mitrovich, Kaiya Sato and Faye Capricia..." She paused for a moment. "While you are only under investigation for this one crime, it would be irresponsible to not suspect there might be a connection. There are similarities in the attacks."

She carefully looked over Hayate. "I have not accused you of anything. Nor am I in charge of your arrest. Be mad all you wish, but I am providing you with imformation that has thusfar been kept from you. Logically, that should make me more favorable in your eyes."

Hayate aimed a stony gaze onto Midori, half-turned to face her. There was a look of pure displeasure on his features. “Oh, certainly. I would know all about those, wouldn’t I?” He was mocking her, not really in the mood now to chat about the reason why he was here. “Similarities or not, I’m surprised there’s not a single competent person in charge who has yet to find the murderer of four different people. You mean to tell me they have had no idea until now, when someone accuses me of torture and kidnapping? How wonderfully inept you people are,” he spat out.

If she thought waltzing in here and referring information to him would make her favorable, she was highly mistaken. Information alone wasn’t enough to make her worth something in Hayate’s eyes. In charge of his arrest or not, she was one of them. While it did not make her an immediate enemy, it also did not make her a friend or ally. “For all I know, you’re here to chat me up and get information out of me about something that I know nothing about. Telling me things I don’t already know doesn’t make you favorable. So, admit why you’re here and get it over with. I don’t like having my time wasted.”

He was not a bundle of courtesy, but he had little reason to be courteous to anyone right now.

Midori cocked her head, blinking impassively at Hayate. "Are you attempting to bruise my ego, Hayate-san? Become defensive about my ability to serve as a member of the Vice Council?" She let out a cold laugh, shaking her head. "I have been in the position for merely days. Your barbs are directed towards the wrong person. And I hardly care about your opinion of my colleagues."

Midori moved closer to the bars. "You are right. I should get to the point. What important appointment am I keeping you from, Hayate-san? Pacing your cell? Or pacing your cell? You're not to be released until all of this is sorted out. So speaking to me is hardly taking away from something else. Unless..." She narrowed her gaze. "Perhaps your friend is coming back. The girl. She is an interesting companion for you. You hardly seem the social type, especially pertaining to chipper young humans."

Midori was careful and took a step back, so to be out of reach of Hayate's hand if her words about Chris angered him. "Is she your lover? Food source?" Midori's smile was dark. "Both?... Oh, I won't judge you if she is. If the child is enamoured enough to let you bite her, then so be it. But I would think captive prey like that would get a little... Dull. A hunter needs to hunt. And the Council does deny vampires the opportunity to hunt..." She let out a mocking chuckle, her expression still cold. "Must make you feel... Impotent."

Hayate narrowed his gaze at the woman across the bars when she brought up the girl. Apparently, her singular interest rested in Chris. It was strange concern for the Vice Council member to have in regards to Hayate’s case, and the vampire could not make out her endgame if Chris was her target of interest. The girl knew nothing, though if she did she would hardly tell to it to people trying to keep him behind bars. “You know very little about my life, and whether or not I am social is clearly something you know nothing about,” he commented simply. He had ties. Few of them, but it did not mean he lacked them completely.

“In fact,” Hayate said, beginning to walk once more, “you may remember that one of my former companions was brutally murdered . . . so I’m afraid to inform you that losing a close friend can tend to cause someone to withdraw from the public as they deal with it.” His feet paused the same time as his voice, and he looked up to face her. “But I can see that’s of little importance to you.”

The tugs of smile pulled at the corner of his mouth as Midori attempted to get him to reveal the nature of his relationship with Chris. “You are an amateur,” Hayate told her with a smile. “You don’t even know how to properly question people with accusing them of untrue things.” The smile had turned bitter for a moment, but his voice had softened as he spoke of Chris. “As for Chris, I am something of a mentor . . . a father figure. And she . . .” Hayate glanced down at the floor, quietly becoming choked up over a memory that was not even his. “She reminds me of my daughter . . . I once had a long, long time ago.”

Hayate looked up, his eyes clouded with tears that did not even belong to him. He grabbed a hold of the bars, pushing on them and gritting his teeth at Midori. “The thing that made me what I am . . . it killed her. Right in front of my eyes. And you dare accuse me of such filth? What is wrong with you?”

Midori kept her gaze trained on Hayate. "The fact that so little is known about your life speaks to your dislike of social situations. Everyone in the haven has begun forming bonds, sharing the history of the lives. You, however, have not. Very few people know anything about you. This suggests isolation. Save for the girl. Which I find curious"

Midori paused, listening to Hayate's words. Of course, she knew about Sato Kaiya. She'd read Hayate's file. He may have been cleared of wrongdoing, but that did not mean the complaint did not still exist on the records. "Sato Kaiya. Yes. But she was more than your former companion, was she not? She was your ex-girlfriend." She cocked her head. "Faye Capricia made a complaint against you. Said you assaulted her and Sato-san. You were cleared of the charge..." She cocked her head curiously, much like a fox when they've spotted something. "It is curious that both of them should be brutally killed not long afterwards, would you not say, Hayate-san? And now Sanura Hart comes forward with more charges against you..."

Midori remained completely cool. "I have been researching all attacks within Elysium. Unexplained injuries. I find one which is curious. Perhaps you could help explain things. You seem to be very worldly. A girl, admitted for exhaustion. However, it was reported she also suffered from substantial bloodloss. She also bore a mark." Midori gestured to her neck. "Are you familiar with her at all? Her name is Kamiyama Mitsuko." There was a fire in her eyes as she spoke the name. "My daughter has always had a mistrust of authority, thus there was no complaint, no investigation, but certainly.... Her injuries were quite clear."

Midori was completely impassive at Hayate's tale of woe. "That is a truly woeful story. Of course, there is nothing to prove whether happened or not. It sounds to me like tragically romantic twaddle churned out in far too many vampire novels... So you forgive me for my disbelief."

She arched an elegant brow. "Oh, I dare. Believe me, boy... You may charm and disarm many with your beautiful face and pleas of innocence, but I don't believe you..." She leaned in. "You see, I don't believe anyone is innocent. And you especially.... You may claim righteous indignance, but..." She sniffed the air, as if she could actually scent the blood on him/. "You reek of death. Only a fool would believe you have been falsely accused not once, but twice. And the law of economy dictates if you are responsible for such acts, then it is extremely likely you are responsible for the other horrors this haven has faced."

Hayate raised his eyebrows, a clear look of scorn on his features. “How can you accuse me of not forming bonds when you haven’t even talked to the people who know me? If that’s how information is gathered around here, no wonder you fail so horribly at it. Have you spoken to the Kitano family? They happen to be close friends and relatives of mine, but you probably wouldn’t know that since you don’t even know how to do your job.”

He tongue was sharp, his insults heightening with each passing moment. She was annoying him. The woman liked to think she knew everything. Hayate never liked that quality in people other than himself. “Yes, she was my girlfriend once. Again, you don’t seem to have completely read the file.” He raised his eyes to look at her. “Kaiya never made a complaint against me, did she? No, she didn’t. Do you know why? Because it wasn’t true. Capricia, as written down by the Head of Guard himself, was an unstable and violent individual. The feud was a minor one between her and I. We didn’t get along. Not everyone on this great green ball gets along, after all. Considering her temper, I wouldn’t be surprised if she had made other unfriendly acquaintances and, dare I say, enemies.”

Hayate’s eyes were devoid of anything as he answered her question. “No, I can’t say the name is familiar.” He sounded bored again, wanting to get this over with.

As for her final accusation, Hayate slowly shook his head at her. His eyes never broke with hers. “If I’m so guilty . . . prove it.” He appraised her with disgust. “Or perhaps your distaste of vampires has clouded your own judgment, and you aren’t fit to overlook or even be on this case. I’ll be sure to inform my lawyer of you.”

He turned around and walked away from her, seating himself back onto the bed in the cell. “You may go now,” Hayate announced stoically.

Hayate may have been chronologically older than Midori, but all she saw was a boy. A grating, caustic brat sure he knew more than his betters. She actually did know about the Kitano family. They had been raising a stink about his imprisonment. But she wondered what face he showed them. It certainly was not this one.

She had most definitely read the file. She had not know Miss Capricia and could not comment on her state of mind. But this man seemed to have a reputation for 'misunderstandings'. There was no doubt in her mind that Hayate's innocence in all of these matters were vastly overstated by the slight boy. "Far be it for me to disagree with the Council." Midori said, bowing slightly. "But you must understand all incidents must be taken into account in this matter."

Midori wasn't entirely convinced Hayate did not know Mitsuko. She knew her daughter had been attacked by a vampire and Hayate was the only one who seemed to have violence tendencies. Add to that, Hayate was exactly the type of attractive man her daughter would be stupid enough to pursue. But she would not continue to press the matter. For all she knew, it had been consensual and things had simply gotten out of hand. Mitsuko was an idiot like that and it would further explain why she had not made a complaint.

"I already told you I have no distaste for vampires. But I suppose it is your best defense. Claiming prejudice. So much does exist towards your kind. I assure you, I am perfectly capable of being on your case. And I am not one to give up easily, Ishikawa-san."

She would not get any more out of the boy. He was going to stonewall her now. She had better things to do with her time. "I'll be seeing you."

With that, Midori transformed into her fox form and retreated from the cell.
