Who: Chris and Hayate
When: Afternoon
Where: Town Hall Dungeon
What: Chris is out of the pavilion, and goes to visit her favorite vampire

Chris couldn't stand being cooped up in the Medical Pavilion. She practically dashed out of the building the moment she was released with Charlie running behind her to catch up. And he always caught up with her; that was never a problem. Chris had stopped trying to outrun her brother a long time ago. They parted ways in the middle of town with Charlie headed home to the bungalow, and Chris making a bee line toward Town Hall. She was headed to see Hayate in the dungeons even though it was the very place where she had been injured.

That didn't matter to Chris, though. As long as that other mean guy wasn't there she wasn't going to worry. She doubted he would be since Charlie had reported the incident to Mr. Dylan, and if there was anyone who would deal with a situation like that it was Mr. Dylan. He was the twins' favorite council member by far because he was always so nice to them. Chris smiled smugly when she thought of all the trouble that mean vine guy had gotten into; that should teach him to never throw girls into walls ever again.

The dungeon guards let Chris pass without any trouble, and the young girl ran down the corridor to Hayate's cell. "Hayate!" Her voice echoed against the old, stone walls as did the sounds of her running feet. Her knitted purse swung back and forth against her body as she ran toward the vampire, stopping finally when she reached him. Her fingers wrapped around the bars, and she leaned as close as she could get.

"Hi..." she said softly with a bright smile on her face. She had missed him so much, and it made her happy to be able to see him again.

At first, being locked up in a dank cell underground was more amusing for Hayate than anything else. What were a few days locked up when he had spent hundreds of years being free? It was an easy wait, but soon a week had passed. He was no closer to seeing a lawyer or to getting any more answers about what sort of evidence they had to support the charges against him. There was nothing but silence filling up the dungeon for his entertainment, and it was not very good entertainment at that.

He heard the hurrying footsteps before he heard his name being called out. That voice. Yes, he knew that voice. He had to act differently around the owner of that voice than he normally would act. The act was grating, pulling on his nerves like a bad ache after waking. He sat up in his bed as she reached the bars, and he watched her from across the distance before finally standing and walking as close to the bars as the guards would allow. They had a nasty tendency to get involved if the distance between visitors and prisoners reached a certain measurement.

“Hello,” he echoed back.

Physically speaking, Hayate was a mess. They told him the rule about showering was once a week, and so his hair was dirty and greasy. His clothes were covered in grime and dirt because the cell itself was not clean when he entered it. He looked like he did in the days when alleyways were his place of residence, only worse. Living in this cell made him look like a homeless person with a specific lack of hygiene.

The bright smile on Chris's face faded with Hayate's unenthusiastic response, and the condition he was in. He looked so sad there behind the bars... sad and dirty. Chris had never seen Hayate looking so unkempt in the entire time she had known him, and it made her feel bad that she couldn't do more to help him. She felt slightly inadequate then, wondering if maybe her chipper attitude made it worse for Hayate. She was allowed to roam free beyond the confines of the dungeon, while he was made to stay here. Chris could see how that would make anyone unhappy.

The distance rule made Chris very upset, and she knew that as long as the guards were there watching that Hayate wouldn't be allowed to come any closer. But, just like the other day, the guards also took breaks, and sooner or later they would leave their post. It would be the only moment of privacy Chris could have with the vampire, and she hoped that the guards would leave very soon.

"I..." she chewed on her lower lip as she searched for something to say to Hayate. It wasn't like she could ask him how his day was, or what he had done lately. They were all inappropriate questions in the same way that her happiness was inappropriate. "I brought you some blood," she said as she turned to reach into her bag. Chris held it out to the vampire in between the bars; for some reason the guards didn't have a problem with exchanging items (unless they were potentially dangerous items). Chris licked her lips, and waited for him to take it from her. She wondered if Hayate had even wanted her there at all.

"Is there anything... you want me to bring for you? Maybe some clothes or... soap?" She shrugged, and laughed a little nervously. "I dunno. Maybe I can bring you stuff to make it more comfy or something." Chris thought she sounded absolutely ridiculous, and she cast her eyes down toward the ground in embarrassment.

Hayate had very little to be happy about in his current keep. He might have shown more enthusiasm if they announced his soon departure from the dungeon or a mistake that resulted in his release, but he was here for another day and another after that. Mindless, endless days in confinement with nothing to do but to briefly talk with those who came to visit him. He was lucky there were no visiting hours, but it would have mattered more if a significant number of people came to see him.

He was lucky for one reason. They allowed his guests to bring him blood from the medical pavilion; otherwise, it would be brought in by the guards for the vampire. He was given just enough to satisfy him while still keeping him on edge. It fucked with his mind, and so he hated it. Hayate could barely recall the time in the beginning of the haven when he subjected himself to animal blood instead of human. It had turned him into something else entirely, and it was not a condition he wished to turn back to so soon. If the guards were really cruel, they would have switched his human blood with animal. Of course, then they might have an even worse psychopath on their hands.

The guards watched the exchanged carefully, allowing the blood bag to be passed through the bars. They did not have to check the inside of the bag; they were sealed at the medical pavilion. Chris was also just a kid in their eyes, and they did not expect her to slip anything by them.

Hayate actually felt the corners of his mouth twitching upward at her mention of soap. “It would be nice, but useless,” Hayate said, glancing up to look at her. “They allow me a shower once a week, and I get soap then. But, as you can see, I don’t have a shower in here to use.” There wasn’t even a sink. Only an old oak chair with a hole in it for a toilet. Comfort was not their prime worry when it came to building this place.

Hayate leaned forward to speak quietly to her. “Thank you, though,” he said, “for the blood.”

Just seeing Hayate was enough to make Chris happy, but then again she wasn't the one behind bars. Hayate looked so unhappy there, and it was enough to make the girl's chest tighten with the threat of crying. She bit on her lower lip as her eyes became glossy with tears. She swallowed the catch in her throat, and tried to smile for the vampire. "Forget the soap then," she said lightly. "I'll bring some wet towels or something. Warm ones. I know you must hate being all icky..." She sighed. "I'll think of something." She wanted to help him however she could.

Chris leaned forward against the bars to get as close as she could. The guard was watching closely, but didn't make a move to stop Chris's actions. "I wish I could give you more," she whispered in return. Hayate would know she did not mean more bags of blood. "And I wish I could do more to help." Chris couldn't help but feel completely useless, and that didn't help her already lowering self-esteem.

The girl sank to the floor, and sat cross-legged in front of Hayate's cell. The floor might have been a little dirty, but she didn't mind it that much. It was better than standing up for the entire duration of her visit. Chris began fiddling with the ends of her hair before she adjusted the hat on her head. She only wore hats on occasion, but the current state of her hair made it a necessity. A shaved spot on her head was not something she wanted to openly display.

"Any news about when you get to leave?" She missed having Hayate around, and spending time with him. Things just weren't the same without him, and she had been noticeably more down ever since Hayate's incarceration.

Her efforts to try and make him comfortable actually brought a faint smile to the vampire’s lips. “Warm wet towels would be great,” he replied. “I might be able to clean up after all.” His gaze passed over the grimy cell with distaste. There was nothing he could do about his living arrangements, but the dirtiness put a damper on his mood. Hayate was fond of cleanliness, even if he lived in an abandoned warehouse. He had done that number a few times. It saved on bills, and candles saved on electricity.

Hayate’s eyes drew back to Chris as she spoke again. The bag of blood was warm in his hand as he liked it, but there — not too far from him — was her beating pulse. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Incarceration also meant he couldn’t feed off of Chris as he usually preferred to do. It was back to nothing but blood bags until he was released — if he was released.

He opened his eyes again to see her sitting on the floor. He, too, moved to sit himself on the floor of his cell across from her. They might as well be at eye level with one another while speaking. “No,” he said. “No news. I’m beginning to think they’re ignoring me, and the rights we once had out in the real world don’t apply here.” Then again, with a council that consisted of an elf, a djinni, and only one human, it was no wonder things were different. He had a right to a fair trial from what he had gleamed from the authorities who brought him in, but it seemed as if they did not have to provide him with a lawyer until they were ready to do so. Maybe there were not lawyers involved in the trials here. He wondered if it was just judge and jury, if even that.

“I know so little about the law here,” Hayate continued on, his hand wrapping around one of the bars and resting there. “When will we be doing this, when are they going to do that . . . I feel like a dog waiting on master’s orders and still not understanding the language spoken to me, just the tone of voice being used in my direction.” Hayate gave a rueful chuckle. “Who knows what’s next. Maybe I’ll get a pony.”

Her bright, blue eyes twinkled when he agreed to the warm, wet towels. Chris nodded her head enthusiastically. "I'll bring you some tonight then," she said happily. "And tomorrow, too. And everyday until you get to come home." Her smiled turned a little sad, but there was still a distinct curl to her lips. "I've really missed you."

She didn't talk about her feelings after that, and went on to act as if nothing was wrong. She sat on the ground opposite of Hayate, and listened to him talk about his situation. She didn't know about the laws in Elysium, or how they were supposed to handle criminal situations. Not that Hayate was a criminal, but the situation wasn't something that the haven had ever encountered before, at least to her knowledge. She frowned a little, and sighed.

"I'm sorry," she said again. She reached forward, and wrapped her hand around Hayate's hand on the bar. "I can look up the law for you," she offered. "And I can ask Mr. Dylan why a lawyer hasn't come to see you yet." She sighed again, and scooted a little closer to the bars. Chris smiled at the pony comment, and chuckled along with the vampire.

"I like ponies," she said quietly. "If you get one, can I keep it?" Another attempt at humor to bring a smile to Hayate's face. Though in truth the idea of having a pony was kind of cool. A flying pony. That sparkled. Yeah... she could totally have fun with that.

The vampire’s fingers instinctively wound around the smaller hand belonging to the girl. Her flesh was warm compared to his chilly skin. They fed him so little while he was behind bars, and it caused the heat to go out of his body and stay gone much longer. He was like a corpse as long as he was locked in these walls, or at least he was slowly turning into one. It was a horrible feeling, and it was causing the voices to tick in the back of his mind. It was only a matter of time before they came back one day.

He smiled vaguely at her mention of the pony. Maybe it was a joke from her, but she sounded serious to the vampire. Sometimes her age dawned on him so much, but was it the fault of her age or the fault of those who raised her? Young ladies of her age never acted this way in his time. They were groomed for womanhood by the age of twelve and thirteen.

Things were so different these days.

“You don’t have to look up the law for me,” Hayate said, his eyes straying back to the pulse in her neck. He tore them away to face her with pale blue eyes. “But you can do another favor for me.” Hayate leaned closer to Chris, lowering his voice to a whisper. “I have a hunting set in my house. It’s hidden inside of my mattress. I need you to get it and hide it in the woods. They’ll think it was used against this woman if they find it, and I don’t want to risk it. Please . . . ” Hayate murmured, looking her straight in the eyes. “Hide it for me, and don’t let anyone see you doing it.”

Chris smiled at Hayate when his fingers moved to cover her hand. The young girl noticed that he was colder than usual, and it made her sad that she couldn't give him the type of blood that he so desperately needed. She couldn't express those things out loud, though, not when the guards were nearby. She simply smiled at him again, and moved her other hand to cover his.

"You'll get out soon," she said with determination. "And when you do we'll celebrate! I promise!" There were many times when Chris's age shone through in certain situations. She was inexperienced in a lot of things, and the most growing up she had to do began the moment she was shipped off to Switzerland with her brother. She had to admit that she had been sheltered her entire childhood, but it was only because there was no need for her to grow up so soon. Womanhood, and marriage? Those things were meant to happen gradually over time, and with someone there to guide her during those important moments. Lately though she seemed to be making her own way through the muddy waters.

Chris leaned in when Hayate did, eyes looking to the side to watch the guard closely. Luckily for them the guard had stepped out for a break leaving the two of them alone. Chris didn't see anything wrong with what the vampire was asking her to do, and she nodded eagerly. "Don't worry," she said with a smile. "I'll be careful, and no one will find the set. I promise."

“Good,” Hayate replied, glancing over to see if the guards were still gone or at least out of earshot. The implications would not have been good if he happened to be overheard speaking these things to Chris. For all Hayate knew, they had already searched his place and turned it upside down looking for some sort of physical evidence to tie him to the kidnapping and torture. He was going to go with the hope that they hadn’t yet gotten that far in their case.

“Do it as soon as you can,” he told her. “I don’t know when they’ll begin to look through my things or if they’ve even started, but I don’t want them finding it. They seem to think I’m guilty, and I haven’t even spoken my piece. So, it’s very important for you to do this for me.” His eyes pled with hers, an honest sincerity in them. “I need this more than anything else right now, and there’s no one else I can ask but you.”

Zach or any of the Kitano family was too much of a risk. Hayate was sure none of them, not even the boy, would understand such a request or follow it as diligently as Chris would do for him. Zach was too skeptical, and it would cause questions to arise and doubts of Hayate’s innocence to form in the boy’s mind.

Chris watched Hayate carefully from beyond the bars. She saw the sincerity in his eyes, and she knew she couldn't let him down. His life was on the line, and after all he had done for her the least she could do was hide a little hunting set for him. She could see how something like that could be taken the wrong way especially by the people who were so eager to put an innocent man behind bars. She inched as close as she could, and pressed her forehead against the cold bars.

"I won't let you down," she said with a smile. "I'll do it as soon as I leave here. I promise." Chris looked at Hayate, and there was nothing but sheer determination in her eyes. She took a deep breath, and then pushed herself to stand. She blew Hayate a quick kiss, and just as the Elven guard was coming back into the dungeon Chris was leaving. She made her way straight to Hayate's house to accomplish the task at hand. She had made the vampire a promise, and that was the most important thing in the world.
