Who: Dylan & Adam
When: Evening
Where: Constance & Adam's cottage.
What: Dylan confronts Adam about what happened to Chris in the dungeon yesterday.
It took a lot for the djinni to get infuriated, but today was one of those days. He learned of some sensitive information regarding the orphan, Chris Jung. Yesterday, she was in the dungeon visiting her friend when a man attacked both Hayate and her. Chris was flung against the wall and knocked unconscious by strength ten times her own. It could have done more damage than what the girl was kindly handed by fate. The right hit could have even killed her, but that was not the most disturbing part of the news.
The most disturbing part was who would do something like that to the young girl. It was the least likely suspect, but the description only matched one man. Only one man could walk through walls and turn into the soil beneath their feet. Only one man could make his arm a vine, his abilities gifting him with such an extraordinary connection to the element he was originally born of.
It was a man whom Dylan knew very well.
Dylan spoke with Constance ahead of time and asked her permission to confront Adam alone. The news stunned the former Head Council member into silence. She denied it at first, not believing it to be true. It did not take long for Dylan to convince her of its authenticity, though. He took her to see the girl and hear the description from the boy. Constance did not want to believe it, but she didn’t have a choice. She conceded to Dylan’s request.
He walked into the cottage, closing the door behind him. Adam was waiting on the couch. Constance waited outside. Adam knew Dylan wanted to speak with him, though he wasn’t aware of what it concerned.
Dylan skipped pleasantries. He felt a deep need to protect the children he had grown attached to upon their arrival at the haven. They were good children. The djinni knew Adam could see the fire in his eyes as he stared the elemental down. Dylan didn’t even bother to sit like Adam. He remained standing.
“You harmed the human child, Chris Jung, at the dungeon yesterday,” Dylan stated. It couldn’t be confused for a question. “And you attacked the prisoner, Hayate Ishikawa.”
Adam was at a loss for words. If there were two people Adam feared, it was Constance and Dylan. His mouth opened but no sound came out, and he looked down at the floor. His hands were trembling. Dylan could sense the regret permeating the air around them. “I’m sorry,” the elemental whispered. “I didn’t mean to.”
“Both?” Dylan demanded, raising his voice. “Or just one of them?”
There was further remorse in Adam’s next spoken words. “Chris,” Adam choked out, lowering his head so far that Dylan couldn’t see his face for the hair falling over it. “I didn’t mean to hurt her. I was so angry. I didn’t . . . ”
“You did not think!” Dylan thundered. The ground beneath their feet seemed to tremble along with Adam’s hands, but the disruption was not coming from Adam. “You did not think about your actions, nor what you were doing! You were careless and violent and you broke the law!” Dylan walked right up to Adam and bent over to speak near his ear. “I ought to have you locked up,” he seethed. Adam did not even say anything in his own defense. He kept his place on the couch and said nothing. His silence said everything Dylan needed to hear.
The djinni stood up and walked slowly over to the door. He took deep breaths, calming his own anger. “You are under house arrest indefinitely. Until a time is decided that you are safe once more to be around people again. Constance is ordering this of you, and you will obey her.” Dylan opened the front door. “This discussion is over.”
Dylan stepped out of the house, leaving Adam to his own distraught thoughts.
