Who: Adrienne and Zach
When: Night, around 8 PM
Where: Medical Pavilion
What: Adrienne just wants to go home, but Zach convinces her otherwise.

"I don't see why I can't go home." Adrienne's voice was echoing through the long corridor in the Medical Pavilion as she tried to walk past a couple of nurses who were blocking her.

"Miss Conté, it has been recommended that you remain here for another night for observation. It would be best for you to return to your room."

"But I feel fine," Adrienne whined. Though the lycanthrope came into the facility in pretty bad shape that wasn't the case now. Couldn't they see that she was fine? Adrienne was fully healed thanks to Theora who had been called in due to the severity of her injuries. Thinking about the situation caused Adrienne's stomach to twist in knots. Had she ever been that badly hurt before? The attack that made her a werewolf wasn't that severe though she wondered if it could have been if her attacker wasn't interrupted.

She shook the thoughts from her mind just as the nurses began to lead her back to her room. Adrienne squirmed in their grasp trying desperately to free her arms from their hands. "C'mon you guys," she pleaded. "I just want to go for a walk." Adrienne didn't like being restrained like a child, or some sort of crazy person who couldn't take care of herself. Coupled with the fact that she was still in a hospital gown, and wriggling around left and right she probably did look crazy.

After supper with his family and his friend Nico, Zach found the time to break away from their worry gaze and questions to head back to the medical pavilion. He wanted to check on Adrienne again before the night was out, hoping to see her walking around instead of restrained to her bed. The nurses had strict orders to keep her bedridden after the injuries she suffered the night before. Adrienne wouldn’t have been completely healed by now, but Zach was sure staying in a bed would make her antsy.

When he arrived inside of the whitewashed walls of the inner corridors, he tried to shake off the feeling of unease that kept onto him. Zach never liked hospitals. On top of that, the hallways were empty and it reminded him of horror movies. As for why he didn’t like hospitals, Zach spent a significant amount of time in them as a child. It wasn’t for illness as much as it was for parental paranoia and accidents due to his own reckless behavior, and it resulted in an intense dislike for these types of places. As long as he was visiting someone, it was easy for him to walk past the doors without being pushed into them.

His eyes met an interesting sight on the way to Adrienne’s room. His mouth quirked upward in the corner as he saw Adrienne struggling to get free of her nurses, who seemed to be dragging her back into her room. Zach picked up his pace and hurried to catch up with them. He slowed down once he got close.

“Are these nurses picking on you, Adrienne?” Zach asked, clearly teasing her for the position she was in. She looked like a crazy person with the gown still on her body, and Zach didn’t know what to make of it other than to grin at it in amusement.

Adrienne's movements paused when she heard Zach's voice echoing in the hall. She looked down the hall to see her boyfriend approaching, and despite the fact that she obviously had a visitor the nurses did not loosen their grip. She whined a little, and pouted in Zach's direction. If anyone would help her it would be her boyfriend, right?

"They are so picking on me," she exclaimed as she jerked her shoulders. The nurses were hardcore, and very insistent on taking the werewolf back to her room. Adrienne had a good amount strength on her, but the nurses were Elven so all of Adrienne's efforts were in vain. It didn't stop her from protesting though, and after a few more minutes the two nurses let Adrienne go gently.

"We expect you to be in bed in thirty minutes, Ms. Conté," they told her sternly. They didn't think she would run away when her boyfriend was there. They looked at Zach with arched brows. "Is that understood, Mr. Kitano?" They smiled at the younger man, and then walked away to leave Adrienne alone with her boyfriend. The werewolf rolled her shoulders to loosen her muscles, and crossed the distance between herself and Zach. Her arms slipped around his middle, and she leaned up to plant a kiss on his lips.

"Thanks for saving me," she said softly. "I'm glad you came to visit."

Zach lifted his eyebrows at the Elven ladies as they addressed a question toward him. His mouth curled up slightly at the corners, and he nodded his head once. “Sure,” he said, not really sure if he actually had to mean it. They walked away, and he wondered why they were so set for her to get to bed in thirty minutes. It wasn’t like staying awake was going to hurt her. He knew sleep would be the last thing he’d be able to get if something like this had happened to him. Surely, they couldn’t hold it against her for wanting to move around, especially if she could do it without help or harm to herself.

He wrapped his arms around her middle as well, leaning his head against hers after the kiss. He couldn’t compare his immense relief to her waking with the fear he felt the night before at the possibility that she wouldn’t wake up. It was a nasty situation Adrienne had been pulled into out of the blue, and they had no idea what had attacked her. Zach didn’t even know if she remembered it being a werewolf. Had he gotten that news, he wouldn’t have been as calm as he was right now.

“How have you been healing?” he asked, pulling his forehead away from hers. Zach’s hand went for her free hand, clasping around it as he began to walk. He wondered if it was faster than normal since he hadn’t expected her to be up and walking around so soon. Not with the wounds she had on her the night of the attack. He knew werewolves had fast healing, but it seemed almost impossible for her to already be walking after what he had seen of her first. He could wrap it up to a miracle if he had to, though.

Adrienne was glad for the company Zach gave her since it would be another day or two before they'd deem her "fit" to return home. She felt fantastic really, but that didn't mean much to the people at the pavilion. Adrienne supposed she didn't have much choice other than to deal with it, but even that became hard when they started to give her a specific sleep schedule. She hadn't had a bedtime since she was twelve, and she certainly wasn't going to start again now.

Adrienne smiled at Zach. She was just as relieved as he was regarding her health; the attack had left her very weak, and according Theora very near death. A normal person wouldn't have survived, and Adrienne was lucky that she was werewolf. It was the only thing that saved her. Adrienne herself thought it was lucky that she hadn't transformed into a werewolf because of the attack, but that was another story altogether.

"I've been healing great," she said. "Not that I had a lot to heal." She paused, and shook her head. No, that wasn't right. "I mean I was pretty banged up, but Theora came in and healed me. That's all." She shrugged a little to dismiss it like it wasn't a big deal even though it was. Theora didn't come in to heal everyone. Most injuries could be handled by the healers and doctors in the pavilion, but serious injuries were left to the High Priestess. "So see, no cuts or bruises," she announced happily.

Zach stopped walking and turned to face Adrienne fully. “Wait, Theora healed you?” he asked, stopping her with a hand on her arm. By the time Zach got to her that night, she looked to be in much better condition than Logan had reported of her at Zach’s front door. Zach figured it must have been the shock Logan encountered upon finding her like that, but Adrienne was still in pretty bad condition and needed time to heal from her injuries. She had told Zach she didn’t remember anything from that night once she woke up the next morning, and Zach hadn’t pushed it.

Now, he was beginning to believe Adrienne wasn’t telling him the full story. She hadn’t lied to him, but she was keeping something from him and Zach wanted to know what and why she couldn’t tell him. “Is there something you aren’t telling me? I mean, besides that.” Zach wasn’t budging until Adrienne gave him an answer. He wanted to know the full story and not be kept in the dark, even if Adrienne thought she was protecting him. “What happened to you?”

Adrienne raised her eyebrows at Zach when he stopped them from walking. His question caused her lips to part slightly, forming an 'oh' shape. "Well..." she began before she puckered her lips. "Um, yeah, pretty much." Adrienne began to chew the inside of her cheek, and she glanced at the hand Zach had placed on her arm. The look on his face told her that he wasn't going to let the matter go so easily, and Adrienne had hoped so badly that he would. "It's not a big deal..."

She let out a sigh, and pulled her lower lip between her teeth. If there was one person she couldn't lie to it was Zach. She couldn't even begin to explain why it was like that since she had no problem telling a fib to either her father or brother to protect them, but Zach... Adrienne couldn't look at Zach and tell him that everything was fine, or that she didn't have anything to tell him.

"I was attacked," she said finally. She was quiet for several seconds before she gave in to her boyfriend's intent stare. "By a werewolf," she said finally. Thinking of her most recent attack reminded Adrienne of the very first time she was bitten, and subsequently turned. In a subconscious move Adrienne rubbed the left side of her neck, and the area below it. The same place she was bitten the first time, and this time as well.

"I saw it... felt it..." Adrienne let out a short, rueful laugh, and shook her head. "It was like the first time. That's not something you forget, you know? I didn't say anything this morning... I didn't want you to worry." She bit back her tears, and turned away quickly to compose herself. "But I'm fine now. Really." She turned to face Zach again with a smile on her face. "Really."

Zach gave her a look that said he knew she was bullshitting him. It was a big deal, even though she wanted to act like it wasn’t. As dense as he was, Zach wasn’t that stupid. Some things slipped over his head very easily, but he had learned to spot things with Adrienne. On top of the random visit from Logan and Mitsuko, Zach already knew what happened to her was serious. He knew she was attacked by something, but so far he had just assumed it was a wild animal while Adrienne was outside at night. There were plenty of wild animals roaming the area.

However, the next three words threw him off guard. A werewolf? Getting attack by a wild animal was one thing, but a werewolf . . . and it wasn’t even the full moon, so there was no way it was a beginning werewolf. This shift had been done on purpose by someone who knew how to shift outside of the full moon, and worse than that, the werewolf had attacked Adrienne on purpose.

He somehow managed to remain quiet as Adrienne continued and he listened to her story. It took a lot of grating teeth and a clenched jaw, but he got through it. Then, came the hard part. “Adrienne, you know what this means,” Zach said with a hard voice, turning to stand right in front of her as his hands took her arms near the elbows in a gentle grip. The fire burning inside of his chest should have made him yell or kick something, but strangely, Zach was very calm and collected. Maybe he was finally growing up.

“Someone attacked you on purpose,” Zach said, looking Adrienne directly in the eyes. “This was deliberate . . . and I know who did it.”

No matter how much she wanted to lie to Zach, she couldn't. Even if there was a chance that he would get angry with her (something that had happened before) she still had to tell him. She was scared that the news of it being a werewolf would upset him, but his reaction was anything but. He was calm, and collected despite the clenched jaw. Even his grip on her arms was gentle.

His next words caused her lips to part in slight shock. She forced out a breath of air, like a laugh, and her expression was one that showed her disbelief. Adrienne shook her head; she didn't want to believe that she was attacked on purpose. It was almost as bad as the time she heard that she had been purposefully turned into a werewolf by some crazed stalker. The girl was determined to live in ignorance, and she shook her head a little more.

"No way," she said finally. "I-I wasn't attacked on purpose! Who would want to hurt me?" She let out a nervous laugh. "And what do you mean you know who did this? How did you know?" The words didn't make sense to her at all; why would Zach know who hurt her? And if he knew why didn't he do anything to stop it before hand? Her brow furrowed a bit as she looked at him, her face riddled with confusion.

Zach made a pained expression as he realized what had happened because of him. If he had told somebody or went to the authorities like he should have, none of this would have happened. Adrienne never would have gotten attacked, and Dante would be off the streets and locked up for his threats against Zach and Adrienne. The man was insane, and Zach didn’t believe any of it was possible. He hadn’t taken it seriously, and look where it got them now. This was all his fault, and he should have done something to stop it.

“I’m sorry, but I didn’t believe he was serious,” Zach pleaded with her, still holding her arms as he tried to explain how he knew about what happened to her. “The man was insane, and everyone kept telling me to just ignore him, there was nothing I could do, so I ignored him. But he threatened me and he threatened you, and I didn’t listen to him. He wanted you and me to break up because he kept saying you two were destined to be together. What was I supposed to do? Elijah knew and Nico knew, but . . . I didn’t know what to do. He just sounded crazy. I didn’t think he would . . . do anything.”

He was starting to feel like a hysterical girl, so Zach took a deep breath and calmly collected himself. Everything he just spilled was a mouthful, and he was talking at a million miles an hour. He hoped Adrienne still caught all of it without him having to repeat it. “Adrienne,” Zach said, stepping closer as he looked into her eyes. “Dante attacked you.”

She was quiet while Zach explained the situation. The flood of information given to her was slightly overwhelming, and it made Adrienne a little light headed. Her head swayed, and she had to close her eyes for a few seconds. Adrienne wasn't sure how to react to anything Zach was telling her. There were threats made to Zach on more than one occasion, but Zach dismissed them because the guy who made them sounded crazy. He wanted Zach to break up with her, but Zach refused and so the guy (whomever he was) decided to attack Adrienne because of it. Adrienne didn't want to believe that those sorts of things still happened in the world, but apparently they did.

"Danté," she said finally. "He did this to me?" As much as she didn't want to believe it she couldn't deny the fact that Danté always put her on edge. Adrienne had tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, and to show him compassion because he was a new werewolf. But if he was the one responsible for the attack that meant he had complete control over his lycanthropy. He could shift outside of the moon.

She opened her eyes once her head stopped spinning, and looked at Zach through a hazy gaze. The rush of blood to her head made her vision less than clear, and it made it look like she was drunk. "Why me? What does he want with me?" There were hundreds of girls in the haven, and Adrienne wondered why Danté had chosen her out of all of them. "You could have told me," she said slowly. "We could have dealt with this... together..."

Zach couldn’t do anything but nod his head at her question. Yes, it was Dante. He didn’t know what else to tell her about the situation. Dante was responsible for this, and Zach was going to find a way to make him pay. His misjudgment caused Adrienne to get hurt, but Zach wasn’t going to misjudge the outcome this time. They were going straight to the Head Council and informing them of everything. Zach just hoped they could arrest him as soon as possible. One more second of Dante running around was one more second too much.

He didn’t know how to answer the second question. Zach couldn’t figure out what Dante wanted with Adrienne either. He wracked his brain for answers and found none. All he knew was what he witnessed and heard himself from the werewolf, and the man was obsessed with her. For one reason or another, he wanted Adrienne. Zach wished he knew why, but it wasn’t like he knew any psychopaths personally to figure it out.

It didn’t help with the guilt to hear her say he could have told her. He could have let her know everything and possibly prevented this, but he didn’t say a word. He hadn’t believed it. As much as he regretted the actions now, what could be done about them after the fact?

“I know that now,” Zach explained quietly. “I . . . just didn’t know it then. I wanted to protect you myself. I didn’t . . . ” He was trying to be the heroic boyfriend, and he failed miserably at it. So much for chivalry when it only put the one you loved in danger.

There was no way to take back the events that had already transpired. Zach hadn't told her about Danté's threats, but even if he had would that have stopped Danté from attacking her? Probably not since there was very little anyone could do to stop a sociopath who had their mind set on something. And though she felt bad that Zach hadn't told her about the situation, she felt worse when she realized that Zach was feeling guilty over what happened. She immediately placed her hands on either side of his face, and leaned in close to him.

"It's okay, honey," she said softly. She pressed her forehead against his as her hands slid down to his neck. "I'm sorry... I didn't mean to make you feel bad. This is just a lot to take in, you know?" Adrienne smiled softly, and ran her fingers gently along his skin. "You do protect me, more than anyone," she said with a smile forming on her lips. Apart from her family there wasn't anyone else that worried about her as much as Zach did. "But if this guy is as crazy as we both think he is then we need to protect each other because I don't know what I'd do if he hurt you over this."

Adrienne closed her eyes, and wrapped her arms fully around Zach's neck. "I love you," she whispered close to his ear. "And no one is ever going to change that, not even a crazy werewolf."

Adrienne’s words were like a calm wave washing over his nerves, still the taunt pull on each of his muscles. Zach let her voice calm him down and fill him with relief — relief that she was alright, relief that he hadn’t caused Adrienne her life, relief that she didn’t blame him for what happened. He felt so much relief he exhaled heavily and leaned into her, slowly wrapping his arms around her middle and pulling her into his embrace.

His throat was caught in a standstill, and he couldn’t get the words ‘I love you, too’ out, but he felt them. Adrienne would be able to sense it in the way he was holding her without him having to say it. Whether or not she wanted him to say it was another matter, though. His mind was so solely focused on what they had to do next. “We need to tell my grandmother and let the Head Council know about it. I know she isn’t one of them anymore, but she’s friends with them and she can get us to see them quickly. We have to tell them what’s going on, so they can take care of Dante . . . ”

. . . Because he couldn’t do it, and neither could she. It was a matter for the law, and Zach knew being headstrong again would only get them both into trouble. Worse than that, it could get them both killed.

Zach didn't have to say the words for Adrienne to know what he was feeling. It was there in his embrace, and that was all the werewolf needed. Adrienne wasn't going to let Danté tear her and Zach apart. The man was insane, and he needed to be stopped. Adrienne wondered if he had hurt anyone else in the haven, or if she was the sole recipient of his "affection."

Adrienne nodded when Zach spoke. She knew it was the right thing to do, and she felt an odd sense of calm wash over her at their resolution. She had a lot of pent up feelings, negative feelings, concerning Danté. She tried to push them from her mind, but her instincts told her there wasn't something right about him. Now her instincts were confirmed, and it felt good to know she had been right about him.

She pulled back from Zach to look him in the eye. "We should go now," she said. There was a spark of determination in her eyes that said she wasn't going to take no for an answer. The nurses at the pavilion might have wanted her to stay for her health Adrienne knew that going to the Head Council about Danté was much more important.

"Let's break out of this joint," she said in a conspiratory tone. She couldn't help the small smirk that formed on her lips. Adrienne peeked around Zach's shoulders and down the hallway behind him. "Before those nurses from Hell come back."

Zach nodded his head and took Adrienne by the hand as he glanced down the corridor. There was no other sign of life in the hallway, so Zach took Adrienne and made a beeline for the nearest exit. He knew exactly where they should go first: his grandmother’s place. His grandmother would know what to do, and she probably could even take care of the part that involved telling the Head Council what was going on herself. Then again, they might want to hear it directly from Dante’s accusers before they would accept anything.

He lent a jacket to Adrienne once they reached the doors. She still had the hospital gown on, but they didn’t have time for her to change. Not if they wanted this taken care of as soon as possible. Luckily, there were a couple of horses tied up outside the entrance, and Zach led them over to the horses. Each of them took one, saddled them, and hopped on the animals’ backs.

With their hands on the reins, Zach and Adrienne sped off in the direction of his grandmother’s house.
