Who: Logan, Mitsuko and Zach
When: Night, after Logan brings Adrienne to the Medical Pavilion
Where: Mitsuko and Logan's place, then Zach's place
What: Bringing the terrible news

Once Adrienne was safely in the hands of the doctors, Logan slipped out of the Medical Pavilion silently. Everyone was in such a rush to take care of the badly injured girl, they hadn't noticed the bloodstained boy that had brought her in leave.

Where everything had been a panicked rush in trying to get Adrienne there, the world seemed to have slowed down now. His body felt heavy-- so very heavy. Each step home felt labored. He could feel the blood drying on his hands-- and his face. When he'd cradled his head, the blood-- Adrienne's blood-- had clung to his flesh.

Reaching home seemed to take forever-- when really, not much time had passed at all. He pushed open the door and went into the living room. He knelt down beside the couch, where the snow-coloured fox slumbered.

"Mitsuko," Logan whispered. "Mitsuko, wake up."

The fox raised her head and blinked blearily at Logan. Even in the dim light of night, she could see the blood and immediately transformed into human form. "What happened?" She demanded.

Logan opened his mouth to speak, but found the words sticking in his throat. He didn't know how to say that Adrienne had been hurt. That she might have died in the Medical Pavilion while Logan was on his way home. He looked helplessly at his sister.

"No." Mitsuko cradled Logan's face. "Look at me, sweetie." She forced Logan to meet her eyes. "You have to tell me what happened. Whose blood is this? Are you all right?"

"Adrienne," Logan finally managed out. "It's Adrienne's."

Mitsuko's eyes grew wide with horror. She jerked as if to run towards the door, to see if her friend was all right. But she recovered herself quickly. She needed to take things slowly, be the big sister to both of them. But right now, it was Logan in front of her, covered in blood.

"Where is she?" Mitsuko said carefully, her voice shaking slightly.

"The Medical Pavilion," Logan replied. "I took her."

"Is she...." Mitsuko started, but found herself unable to finish the sentence.

But Logan knew well communication without words. "She was when I brought her in."

Mitsuko sighed in relief. She then nodded slowly. "All right." She took Logan's reddened hands and led him to the bathroom. If she was at the Medical Pavilion and she was alive, then there was nothing Mitsuko could do for her at the moment. But Logan... Oh, Logan. The idea of him having another trauma hurt her. Not to mention the worry she had about Adrienne's blood being on him. She got a towel and wet it, carefully cleaning the blood from his hands and face. She checked him carefully for cuts in which the blood might have gotten into his bloodstream. She wasn't certain how it would affect him. Logan was only half-human, after all... Thankfully, he was perfectly fine. She might mention it to one of the doctor's, just in case. But now, there were other things to focus on.

"Zach," Logan said. "I need to tell Zach."

Mitsuko was glad Logan had come to her first. If Zach had seen Logan covered in Adrienne's blood... She finished cleaning up the last remnants of blood from Logan's skin. "Change your shirt and we'll go over."

Logan went off to change out of the clothes stained with the evidence of Adrienne's injuries. He would burn them when he had the chance. When he came out, Mitsuko was waiting for him, now in jeans and a sweater. She looked like she was ready for a long night in the Medical Pavilion.

"What am I supposed to tell him?" Logan asked as they walked together towards Zach and Nico's cottage.

"The truth," Mitsuko replied. "He's going to find out anyway. It's better that he hears it from a friend." Of course, Zach wasn't the only person who needed to know. Mr Conte and Jason needed to know. Mitsuko felt a twinge of empathy for her "adopted family". But first things first. She didn't even know the full story yet and Zach was the first person Logan wanted to tell. Adrienne's family would be contacted soon enough.

They arrived at Zach's. Logan raised his hand to knock on the door, but he hesitated. Could he really do this? Could he tell his friend-- one of his best friends-- his girlfriend had been attacked by what looked like a wild animal?

He had to. Finally, he rapped his knuckles against the door and waited for what seemed like eternity for someone to answer. He wasn't completely certain what he would say, but he was certain he face spoke volumes as it was. Something bad had happened.

Zach was awake late at night, though he probably should have been in bed. He was sprawled out on the couch, dozing off after coming down to get a glass of water and resting in the living room. It didn’t take long before his eyelids got heavy, but he didn’t actually have a chance to fall back asleep. Not when his eyes shot open at the sound of knocks on the door.

Zach furrowed his brow as he wondered who would be knocking on his door at midnight. It was a rare occasion, to say the least, that anyone came over this late. It was common for people to come early and stay late, but having people arrive at this hour was not the usual for Zach.

When he opened the door and saw Logan standing there and Mitsuko not far behind, the looks on their faces immediately worried him. He had no inkling on what had happened, but it looked like something was wrong. “Did something happen?” he asked, glancing from Logan to Mitsuko. If Logan couldn’t answer right away, he knew Mitsuko would say something. He hoped he wouldn’t have to wait long for an answer either way.

Logan took in a deep breath as the door open and the sleepy looking Zach appeared in the doorframe. He was momentarily mute at the sight. Granted, that wasn't all that surprising for Logan. But Zach was the one person he was almost always able to speak to.

Mitsuko reached over and grabbed his hand for support. But Logan pulled away. He could do this, besides... He needed to be there for Zach.

At Zach's question, Logan nodded, the grave expression etching into his features. He placed his hands on Zach's shoulders, to brace him. To stop him from running off like a wild man when he spoke. "It's Adrienne," Logan said quietly. He kept a firm grip on Zach. "I found her when I was walking. She'd been attacked by... Something. Something... Big and mean. She was bleeding. I got her to the Medical Pavilion and the doctors are trying to help her." He swallowed hard. "I needed to tell you myself."

"We're going back to the Medical Pavilion," Mitsuko interjected. "You and Logan can go ahead. I'll meet up with you later." She paused, biting her lip. "I want to go tell Adrienne's dad."

Zach glanced down at the hands suddenly on his shoulders. He wasn’t sure how to respond to that, or why Logan was holding his shoulders. It was bad enough he came out here in the middle of the night with his sister at his side, both of them wearing grave looks on their faces. Zach wasn’t sure how to react, so he just felt blank — the same as before they showed up. After all, he didn’t hear any bad news yet. He could only wish the next few moments would remain that way.

Though his feet didn’t try to run him anywhere, Zach did feel something along the lines of his heart jumping into his throat at the simple mention of Adrienne’s name. Something wasn’t right, and Adrienne was involved. Zach would have thought the worst if his brain was even functioning, but considering how late it was, how could he be sure this wasn’t all just part of some dream?

It definitely sounded like a dream. Every word out of Logan’s mouth went further and further from reality for Zach. Maybe that was why he managed to be so calm when he heard the news. How could he be sure he wasn’t just hearing things? Maybe his mind was making it all up. Maybe something happened, but it wasn’t as bad as it sounded. Adrienne wasn’t dead — didn’t that count for something?

But what would happen in the next few moments if Zach didn’t get there as quickly as possible?

Despite the cold, sinking feeling of fear in his chest, Zach managed to enter the house and put on his shoes and a jacket in record timing. He came back to the door and, with a resolute nod, looked at Logan. “Let’s go,” he said, not knowing what else to say out loud at that moment. If Mitsuko was telling Adrienne’s family, then Zach didn’t have to worry about doing it himself.

Logan could see the change in Zach's expression. When the information he'd relayed had begun to sink in. When he realized what had happened to Adrienne. Logan recalled that feeling. The terror and unreality of the situation washing over you. He'd felt that thrice in what felt like too short of a time-- When his mother was killed, when his father succumbed to his injuries and when he found the bodies of Kaiya and Faye. He supposed Adrienne also qualified, but the feelings were too fresh for him to really process.

Mitsuko broke the tense silence, taking a few steps back. "I'll be at the Medical Pavilion soon with Mr Conte and Jason." She transformed into her fox form-- it was easier for her to travel quickly-- and ran off.

Following Zach's command to move, Logan nodded and walked beside him towards the Medical Pavilion. They were not running, but there was a definite hurriedness to their steps.

"I don't know what it was," Logan managed. "If it was an animal or...." He swallowed hard, his mind on the attacks of late, on Hayate, on Kaiya. "I just don't know."

He didn't know what else to say. There probably wasn't anything he could say. The only thing Zach needed right now was to see Adrienne, to see she was still alive. All he could do was stand back, to be there for his friend.

The air was crisp and cool to breathe as they walked briskly in the direction of the medical pavilion. Luckily, it wasn’t too far out from the town cottages. It wasn’t a long journey at all, but it’d be quicker with a horse. They were out of luck when it came to the horses, though. Zach didn’t have Sable at the house, and they weren’t just random horses roaming about that they could hop onto the backs of and ride toward the medical pavilion. Brisk walking would have to do the trick to get them there.

Zach turned his head to look at Logan. The sinking pit in his stomach said it couldn’t have been good if Adrienne was attacked by a large animal. He recalled the past events of dead animals being found around people’s homes a couple of months back. There was a possibility that whatever had killed those had come back into town again.

“It looked like an animal attack?” he asked, trying to keep his voice steady. Zach couldn’t tell if it was the weather or the news that was making his jaw tighten up and become jittery.

Logan wished he could do more. Wished he could walk faster. Wished he could have been more help to Adrienne than just taking her to the Medical Pavilion. Hell, at the very least he wished there was more he could say to Zach. But as it was, all he could do was follow his friend towards the Medical Pavilion. He was completely and utterly useless. The only thing Logan seemed to know how to do was find bodies. At least this time, the body has been clinging to life.

"I... I think so," Logan said quietly. "I don't know. I don't know what kind of human could.... Or I don't know...." Words seemed to be failing him. But it did seem like it was far more damage than could have been inflicted by a human or even any of the comparable species. "I think you need to talk to the Doctors. They'll know more. I'm just...." The word useless was the only one that really came to mind to finish than sentence.

Zach simply nodded his head at Logan’s information and kept his eyes ahead. There wasn’t much else he could bring himself to say or ask about Adrienne. The only thing he wanted to do was get there on time before something bad happened to her. His feet picked up their pace, strides across the grass that made the distance almost seem shorter. After a little while of walking, Zach could see the outline of the medical pavilion in the dark, and he started running towards it. His need to get inside and check on Adrienne was greater than anything else.

He ran through the doorway and into the first hall. His feet skidded to the nearest person, and Zach asked her where they had taken Adrienne in the pavilion. He received a number and a general direction pointed out to him and, without looking behind himself to see if Logan was following him, he dashed off to follow the directions and find her room. Hopefully, Logan was able to keep up with him without needing to tell Zach to slow down, but only if he had planned on following Zach in the first place.

Logan didn't need to slow down at all. He could move quickly when it was required of him. Hell, he wouldn't have made it to Elysium alive if he wasn't somewhat fast. He wouldn't have asked Zach to slow down even if he wasn't fleet of foot. He knew how much Zach loved Adrienne. While Logan had not had a relationship of his own, he knew if he had a girlfriend like that, nothing would have stopped him from getting to her side. In the back of Logan's mind, he remembered running to the town hall, to get help from the Council when he'd found Kaiya and Faye. His heart thudded in his chest at the memory.

What would they find when they reached Adrienne? Were the doctors still working on her? Was she now in some sort of intensive care unit? Or-- Logan's heart flip-flopped-- were they too late? Had Adrienne slipped away in the brief time he'd been gone to retrieve her boyfriend and 'adopted sister'?

Zach was good at preparing for the worst but hoping for the best at the same time. As he skidded down the hallway towards his destination, he had no idea what to expect. There wasn’t a crew of personnel outside of her doorway, only a closed door and utter silence. He heard the echo of his shoes hitting the tiled floor, but nothing else reached his eardrums.

His hand was on the doorknob before he knew it, twisting the knob and pushing open the door to an equally empty room. There weren’t any nurses or doctors anywhere where he could see them. Zach turned his head to the left, and there on the bed was Adrienne — silent with her eyes closed, and Zach was milliseconds away from believing her to be dead. He rushed to her side and checked for breathing, a pulse. He found both and let out a shuddering breath of air.

She was alive.

Zach dropped his head to Adrienne, his face pressed close to her shoulder. He noticed the multitude of bandages, but not as many as he expected with the information given to him by Logan. He wondered if they got a healer to her on time, but if she had a healer, what use did she have for bandages?

His hand reached out for hers, enclosing his fingers around the digits of her hand. Zach didn’t know what else to do. He was too relieved to find out she was alive.

Logan let out a sigh of relief when he saw Adrienne laying in the bed. He had been going through all of the nightmare scenarios in his head as they made their way to the Medical Pavilion. But now he saw she was all right. Well, not all right, but... Better than she had been. There had been so much blood when he found her. She'd been breathing so shallowly. Now she at least seemed to be... Whole. Recoverable.

He stood back and let Zach have his moment with Adrienne. He knew how much Zach cared for her and Logan wasn't about to encroach on that. He just wanted to look over on Adrienne and make sure his mind wasn't playing tricks on him.

The tiny white fox ran into the hospital room and transformed into Mitsuko's human form. "Adrienne's family is talking to the Doctors." She sighed when she saw Adrienne lying in the bed.

She went to Logan and wrapped her arms around his neck, giving him furious hug. "I'm so proud of you, Logan," she whispered.

"I just did what had to be done," Logan whispered. He leaned against his sister, feeling exhaustion taking over him. The events of the evening had drained him of whatever energy he had left and his insomnia hardly seemed insurmountable.

Zach barely paid attention to the addition of another person in the room. He heard Mitsuko when she spoke, but he didn’t bother to look over. He didn’t need to see her face to see who it was when he heard the voice. Mitsuko wasn’t even talking to him, anyway; her focus was on her brother much like how Zach’s focus was on Adrienne. Zach might have even felt a sear of anger towards Mitsuko for getting to find out before him, but it was the right thing for Logan to do before he went running in blind. He had to tell someone else first to help him get his bearing — help him decide what to do next.

It was hard to think in the heat of a moment. You just did what came naturally to you, and Logan was a teenage boy like Zach. He was going to run to his own family before he told anyone else. Adrienne was taken to safety first thing, which was all that mattered. She was bandaged in a hospital bed, her wounds long taken care of by the time they arrived through the medical pavilion’s doors.

He wasn’t in a mood to talk, and he probably wasn’t going to even if he was budged. Zach closed his eyes and bowed his head. All they could do now was sit and wait.
