Who: Mitsuko and Zach
When: Afternoon
Where: Shore of Lake Alata'elen
What: Taking a walk and offering free hugs

It was a pleasant day and Mitsuko was off of work, so she decided to take advantage of it. She gone out for a long walk around the Haven. The weather was so nice, she actually managed to wear an outfit which was probably the least amount of clothing she'd managed in a while (at least, in public). It was a black dress, which resembled more a shirt. Written across the chest in bold letters were the words FREE HUGS. Of course, she didn't want the chance the weather too much and wore knee-high boots to protect her legs. That, and she looked good in boots.

Her outfit was mostly an invitation for people to talk to her. She was feeling very sociable at the moment. Considering Mitsuko was usually ridiculously sociable, this was saying a lot. Things seemed to be going all right for her personally at the moment. The election of the Vice Council was tonight. Hopefully that meant her mother would be voted on and have something to do with her time other than get into Mitsuko's business. Logan was working hard making jewelry for Valentine's Day. There was also the issue of the rumors around town. Gossip was the Head Council was going to arrest someone for an attack, which might also be connected to the murders. A thrill went through Mitsuko as she though about whether or not the arrestee was Hayate. He was, after all, the only psychopath she knew in town. She hadn't really thought her poisoning would be fatal, it was just something to feel less helpless... Him rotting in jail would be even more satisfying anyway. He could be locked away for a very long time, given vampire life spans.

The only thing that made her feel a bit sad was looking out onto the water as she walked by Lake Alata'elen. She wondered how Loki was doing. If he was all right. If took the compass she'd given him with him. If he might occasionally think about her. But she did not dwell on those thoughts long. It wouldn't do her any good and she was in too good a mood to have it ruined.

Mitsuko let out a sigh and enjoyed the nice weather. She wondered if she might come across someone else who was enjoying the weather today. She could use some company.

Zach was out taking a walk as well as considering whether or not he wanted to go to the party tonight. A lot had happened in the last few days, and he wasn’t sure if a party was the right setting for him. Plenty of people would be there to congratulate the winners of the Vice Council election, too, so it wasn’t like they needed him specifically to liven up the party. If he did go, it would just be a quiet event with him and Adrienne.

He spotted Mitsuko up ahead on the beach and grinned in her direction. Raising an arm, Zach waved at her. “Hey, Mitsuko!” he called, remembering Logan’s sister and Adrienne’s friend very well. It had been a while since he had specifically talked to her himself, and surprisingly nothing that he and Logan talked about came to mind when he saw her today. It was just good to see a friend, and on top of that, the weather was actually nice.

It didn’t take him long to notice her shirt, and Zach laughed as he read ‘FREE HUGS’ written in big bold letters across it. He held out his arms once he got closer. “So, am I going to get a hug or what?”

Mitsuko heard the voice call to her and she looked over at who it belonged to. While he would never admit it, she took a scent of the air, to make sure it was really Zach. The boy's resemblance to Hayate was... Uncomfortable, to say the least. But the pair had different scents and she was reasonably sure it wasn't just Hayate looking particular young and luring her into another trap. Maybe her nervousness about the vampire was one of the reasons she and Zach did not spend more time together. Of course, the rational part of Mitsuko's brain knew this was ridiculous. If she were ever to casually hang around with Zach, Logan or Adrienne would most likely be with them too. Then, Mitsuko's rational part of her brain was vastly outmatched by her gut instinct.

"Zach!" Mitsuko called out and ran up to him. There was a particular bounce in her step, due to her happiness about the day.

She let out a laugh as Zach held out his arms and request his hug. She wrinkled her nose cutely. "Well, they are free, aren't they?" She wrapped her arms around the slight young man and gave him a hug. "I promise I won't tell Adrienne if you liked it," she whispered teasingly in his ear. She pulled away with a wicked smile. She didn't think of Zach in a sexual way. She could acknowledge he was attractive, but her sisterhood with Adrienne instinctually denied any further thought on it. The fact Zach reminded her a bit of Logan also didn't help. But that didn't mean she couldn't throw a teasing flirt his way. It was all in good fun, entirely harmless.

"How have you been doing? I haven't had the chance to se you lately."

Zach scrunched his nose back at her. “They better be free,” he teased. He gave her playfully pointed look. “I ain’t paying for them.”

He hugged her, feeling himself roll his eyes with a ridiculous grin on his face at her comment. Mitsuko did like to have her ego stroked, and if Zach knew anything about her, he did know that. “Why wouldn’t I like it?” he asked as he pulled away. “I love hugs. Hugs are awesome. They make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.” He smiled at Mitsuko, pressed his lips together, and tilted his head to the side with a calculating look on his face. “Well, I don’t know how you can feel ‘fuzzy’ on the inside, but that’s how the saying goes.”

The question opened up a world of possible answers from him. After all, Zach had had a lot on his mind lately and sorting through the mess was like walking through rubble and ruins with bare feet. He took a deep breath and let it out, his chest deflating beneath his jacket. “I’ve been doing a lot. Kind of. Hanging in there, too.”

He didn’t want to say he was doing all right since he wasn’t sure if he was doing all right. With thoughts of his brother in his mind and Irei’s agreement to help him, Zach had been thinking of the dead more than the living — and the fact that he still needed to bring it up with his family.

Zach shrugged his shoulders, wanting to speak of happier topics. “There’s just been a lot going on lately, you know?” He gave a small smile. “I’m working on it, though.”

Mitsuko laughed at Zach's reaction. "Hey, I might have a reputation, but I've never charged for that kinda thing." Which was very true. As much as some people (usually the guys she scammed) wanted to believe, Mitsuko had never been a prostitute. She just exploited men with her charms. It was a thin line, but it was there.

She giggled at Zach's description of hugs. He was a real dork sometimes. She frowned slightly. "You know, I didn't know that's how it went." While Mitsuko's English was very good, occasionally she had problems with idioms. "You know, I always said I felt fuzzy outside." She then laughed again. "But I suppose sometimes I am fuzzy outside." Her tail gave a flick.

Mitsuko's laughter died off as their conversation continued. She frowned slightly at the change in Zach's demeanor. She wasn't really good with dealing with... Feelings. And she and Zach didn't really know each other all that well. "There... Anything you wanna talk about?" She sounded extremely awkward asking the question, unsure if that was how one was really suppose to broach this type of topic.

She nodded. "Yeah. I know. A lot is... A lot." She put a hand on his shoulder. "I'm glad to hear you're working on it. And if it gets to be too much... You've got your family and Adrienne and Logan and Nico and..." She gave him a small smile back. "I've adopted Adrienne as my sister. Which almost of makes you my brother-in-law. So you've got me too."

Zach couldn’t help but burst into laughter. She might have had a reputation, but the most Zach ever heard was from her brother. As a result, he had a much more innocent view of Mitsuko than others. He was also one of the few people who saw the relaxed side of her, even if she did tend to be on the showy side most of the time. Zach hardly ever saw it.

“Yeah, that’s an old saying. I heard it a lot growing up.” He grinned as she called herself fuzzy on the outside, which was true for a kitsune. “But it’s a very cute kind of fuzzy on the outside,” he said, looking at her pointedly. Zach raised a finger at her. “Don’t ever let anyone tell you differently.” He saw her a lot like a sister with her connection to Adrienne. He tended to do that with her friends.

Zach shook his head. It wasn’t something he wanted to talk about right now, especially since it was best for him to speak to his family about it first. “Nah, I’m good.” He kept a light smile on his face to not belie the appearance of being okay. Zach always kept more things to himself than the things he shared. Zach furrowed his brows at the reference to being a brother-in-law, though. “Brother-in-law?” he inquired, a curious look on his face. “Who’s been talking about marriage again? My mother? I swear she never shuts up about that.”

Despite still only being nineteen, it seemed his mother was ready to marry him off and get grandbabies as soon as possible. Her enthusiasm scared him sometimes.

It was nice to have some people in the world who didn't see her as most of the world did. While she did do a lot to put out the image of the sexy, fun, flirtatious thief, there was a lot more to Mitsuko. But it was a part of herself that she wasn't incredibly comfortable with. It made her feel vulnerable. But that there were a few people she was able to share it with...

"Sometimes, English sayings confuse me. Not surprising, considering how weird they are. Not that Japanese ones are any better.... Kitsune ones are even weirder, but I can't say them right now..." She tapped her throat. "Different vocal chords and everything. But one of my favourites translates roughly to 'having a black stripe through your fur'. It means being in a bad mood. I guess it would be like 'waking up on the wrong side of the bed'." She let out a small giggle at Zach's comment about her fur. "Thank you. Not enough people appreciate the fur. Actually puts some people off."

Mitsuko gave a slight nod, silently fulfilled Zach's request. She wasn't going to prod if he didn't want to speak about it. If he wanted to, he would open up in his own time. But Mitsuko figured there were a lot of people higher on Zach's list of those he'd open up to.

She giggle again at Zach's scrunched look. "It was mostly a comment on the fact you two are pretty much joined at the hip." She ruffled Zach's hair. "You shouldn't be getting married yet! Still got lots of wild oats to sow. Lots of dirty, sinful premartial sex." She gave Zach a wicked smile. "Did Adrienne show you what I got her for Christmas yet? It was really a gift for the both of you."

Zach smiled as she told him about one of the old kitsune sayings. He thought it might translate into something like that, and it was neat to know that small bit of information. Even if he would never use it. Then again, he could never be too sure about that.

He made a face at the mention of people being put off by her fur. “How is that possible? Cute furry animals — no offense — are, well, cute. Foxes are in that category, even if you are a kitsune fox and not a regular one.” Zach shrugged his shoulders plainly. “I don’t see how anyone could be put off by a fox, but maybe that’s just me.”

A smirk tugged on the corner of his lips. It was true him and Adrienne appeared joined at the hip. They spent an awful lot of time together, but that was a good thing. As long as they enjoyed spending that much time with each other, it meant they were in a relationship that worked. Zach scrunched up his nose when Mitsuko ruffled his hair, but he didn’t say anything about it. It didn’t exactly bother him, but it was amusing that she felt the urge to do it.

“Yeah, lots of dirty premarital sex,” Zach concurred. “I might as well be married since I’m only doing it with one woman.” He let out a small sigh as he pretended to be sad about the idea. “Can’t exactly sow wild oats when you’re in a steady relationship, I suppose.” He turned to Mitsuko and smiled at her. It was weird to acknowledge the idea that marriage didn’t really bother him, even weirder that he did it in the presence of Mitsuko.

“You know, you’re a bad influence,” he announced to her. “You’ve got me thinking all proper and virtuous. It’s really weird.”

"Haven't you ever run into anyone who's freaked out by what you can do?" Mitsuko placed her hand on her shoulder, over the scar she had received from Sho. "I'm a fox than can turn into a girl. For a lot of people... They can't deal with that." She shook it off and smiled brightly. "Or else it gives them weird bestiality feelings. I dunno... You humans are weird." She stuck out her tongue at him playfully.

Mitsuko felt a small stab of jealousy at the closeness between Adrienne and Zach. It just seemed so easy for them to be in such a close relationship. She had wanted that so bad for a while. And now it seemed farther away than ever. But the feeling did not last long. Mitsuko had made her choice and she was enjoying having fun again.

"Well, if Adrienne is willing to be all dirty with you and you're not bored or anything, you don't really need another woman do you." She smiled at him. "And even if you're in a steady relationship, you can still sow wild oats. You just have to have lots of weird and creative sex." Not that Mitsuko was an expert in steady relationships. But she could think of a lot of things that tended to go a bit better when you trusted your partner.

Mitsuko clutched at her chest and staggered back dramatically. "I'm making someone virtuous? I should be shot!"

“Yeah, you’d be surprised,” Zach said quietly, scratching the side of his head. It used to be an everyday occurrence of attempting to hide himself until the last year of his life. The memories her question brought back weren’t pleasant ones, and Zach shut them out. He didn’t want to think about the reactions people had towards him when he was younger.

He laughed at her joke and stuck his tongue out at her as well. “Well, just ‘cause you’re a fox doesn’t mean it’s worse than me being an alchemist. People are freaked out by the smallest things as much as they are with the biggest things.” He gestured between both of them with his thumbs. “You and me are both freaks. Learn it, live it, love it.”

Zach wrinkled his nose. “Okay, I like some dirty things, but not all dirty things. Some dirty things are just . . . dirty.” Zach made a face and shook his head. Yeah, there were just some things he wasn’t trying in this lifetime.

A big grin enveloped Zach’s face. “Ooh, be careful what you wish for ‘cause that can be arranged.” Of course, he was being playful. “Well, not by me, but shh. You don’t want any hunters hearing you. They’ll think it’s open season on foxes.”

Mitsuko knew very well the kind of feelings Zach felt. Hiding your nature, knowing people would fear you if they knew the truth. They were not pleasant and not something she much wanted to focus on herself. It didn't matter much now. It seemed like everyone in Elysium accepted praeternaturals as just a part of life. Well, nearly everyone. She thought about her encounters with Max, how uncomfortable he had seen with it all. That had just brought up bad memories.

" I couldn't think of better company to be in," Mitsuko said playfully, giving Zach another quick hug. "What's so good about being normal, anyway? Freaks are so much fun!"

She rolled her eyes. Zach was just so innocent. "Well, yeah! There are things that are just dirty. And if you think they're just dirty, you don't do them." She smiled at him. "My philosophy is if feels good, do it and if you don't want to... Then don't do it. Seriously, when you follow those rules, you always have a good time."

Mitsuko froze, feeling a bit of discomfort at Zach's joke. She knew he was only trying to be playful, but it did hit a little too close to home. Her grandmother had been fatally injured by hunters. It had been long before Mitsuko had been born, but she suspected the death contributed to Midori's nearly fanatic want for isolation from humans. "I'll be more careful about that," Mitsuko replied, trying to feign a large smile. "I doubt my charm would get me far in stopping someone from wearing my fur and PETA doesn't exist anymore."

Zach nodded his head stoutly. It sounded like a good type of philosophy, but it brought an amused grin to his face when he remembered what her brother had said about her and a particular librarian not too long ago. Of course, Zach wasn’t going to bring it up with Mitsuko because it wasn’t any of his business. Being a guy, he just wasn’t going to intrude on that part of her life. However, the memory of it matched with her philosophy couldn’t stop him from grinning.

He didn’t notice her discomfort with what he said about hunters. Sometimes he said things without thinking. It had happened on more than one occasion in the past. “You know I’m kidding,” he added playfully with a shrug of his shoulder. It was habit just to say it.

“You should hang out with me and Nico sometime,” Zach offered, glancing over at Mitsuko. He realized he didn’t really hang out with Mitsuko, but he liked her as a person. Besides, she seemed like she’d have fun with the boys. “He and I have been trying to orchestra group things with people. You know, fun stuff to do. But we fail hardcore at it.” He grinned at her. “Maybe you could help us out?”

Mitsuko had no idea what Logan had said to Zach, but she couldn't miss the grin on his face. She smiled back at him, looking at him curiously. "Now, what's got you smiling like that? Did I say something funny? That happens sometimes, I'm so hilarious, I don't even realize when I've made a joke."

She'd already shrugged off the comment. Mitsuko didn't dwell on such dark thoughts most of the time. She knew Zach had no idea of her family's past and had meant nothing by it. "Of course." She shrugged back, still smiling at him.

But the smile from her face faded a bit at the mention of hanging out with him and Nico. "Are you sure that's a good idea?" Mitsuko asked. She worried her lower lip. "Not that I don't want to!" She held up a hand. "I mean, you and Nico are great! I really like you guys and we should hang out more. But..." She wrinkled her nose. "Nico's just really protective of Loki." She recalled him chewing her out when she'd kissed Irei (the first time). "I mean, Loki and I broke up really amicably, but... Won't it be weird? Best friends tend to hate ex-girlfriends on behalf of their friends."

“Yeah,” Zach answered, still smiling, though it wasn’t entirely true. It wasn’t as if she said a joke, but he was going to pretend as if she did. If he left it at that, he was pretty sure she wouldn’t pester him for more information. Zach also didn’t want to get Mitsuko mad at her brother for sharing stuff about her with his friends, regardless if it was positive or not or just completely neutral. He was going to keep Logan’s trust there.

Zach grew a little confused when Mitsuko seemed unsure about the idea. It wasn’t until she mentioned the thing with Loki that it dawned on Zach what she meant by it. It actually drew forth a laugh from Zach, and he shook his head. He knew Nico wouldn’t have a problem with Mitsuko this far down the line of the breakup with Loki. Nico was a guy, and guys didn’t hold onto that sort of thing. Unless it was a nasty breakup.

“Nico’s a dude,” Zach replied, giving her a look as if to say that explained everything. “If you and Loki are cool, you and Nico are cool. Trust me. Nico probably doesn’t even remember that.” Zach forgot it himself until Mitsuko brought it again just now. It felt like ages had passed since Loki and Mitsuko were an item, even though it wasn’t that long ago. A couple of months, at most.

Mitsuko shook off the supposed joke she'd meant. She wasn't sure exactly what she had said that had set Zach off, but obviously she had said something amusing to him. Oh well. Boys were weird like that sometimes.

She knew she was overly worried about Loki, about what he would think of her. They had broken up for a very good reason. Neither of them were quite ready to settle down yet. But that didn't change the fact she had feelings for him and she wanted him to think well of her. If she were to start hanging around with Nico, he would no doubt find out she was back to old habits. As amicable as things were, moving onto two casual sex partners was not really happy news. But she wasn't ashamed of what she was doing. If Nico couldn't deal with it, then whatever.

"I guess you're right," Mitsuko smiled at Zach. She gave him a nod. "I'd really like to hang out with you and Nico." She thought about it for a moment. "Wow.... You know, this maybe be the first time I've hung out with guys without the possibility of sex afterwards. I think I'm growing as a person."

“Oh, gross,” Zach suddenly said, bursting into laughter as he bent over forward. The last thing word Zach wanted to hear out of Mitsuko’s mouth was her and ‘sex’ in the same sentence. He was easily starting to see her as the sister type, and sex was just not something you wanted to hear about from someone who struck you as sisterly. He especially didn’t want to hear it in regards to her hanging out with him and Nico and the three of them not having sex afterwards. Oh god, he needed brain bleach.

Zach brought a hand to his forehead and swiped it over his eyes. “Yeah, okay, no mentioning the three of us and ‘sex’ in the same sentence ever again,” he mused out loud. Zach looked at Mitsuko and shook his head. “I do not want to have awkward mental images involving someone I think of as a brother and—” Zach gestured with both hands toward Mitsuko. “Someone like a sister and—” Zach pointed at his own chest. “Me.” Zach shuddered again at the end, making a face as he did so.

Mitsuko laughed heartily at Zach's discomfort at the idea of her, him and/or Nico having sex. The idea was pretty gross to her too. The two boys fell into the (very under-utilized) no touching category for her and always had. It's not that they were unattractive. In fact, they were very cute. Nico was Loki's best friend and that made him completely off-limits in her mind. And Zach...

Mitsuko stopped laughing when Zach referred to her as like a sister. Yes, she had joked about Zach being almost like a brother-in-law to her, but his wording made it all the more personal. At first, she'd told herself she was not attracted to Zach because of his innocence. But that had certain not held true for everyone she was attracted to and through talking with Adrienne, she knew he really wasn't that innocent.

Her inability to be attracted to Zach was due to a sibling-like bond. Even though they were not that close, that element had always been there. It touched her that Zach felt the same.

Smiling, tears in her eyes, Mitsuko threw her arms around Zach and gave him a furious hug. She didn't know how to convey how much what he'd said meant to her, except for hugging the boy. "You're such a dork," she murmured to him. "I said I don't want to do that with you or Nico."

She smiled broadly at him. "So if I'm like a sister to you, does that mean you're going to get grossed out if you hear I get laid? 'cause that does tend to happen sometimes."

The sudden hug threw Zach off balance, and he nearly fell over from the affectionate attack. The only thing that prevented him from hitting the ground was immediately wrapping his arms around Mitsuko to hug her back. It was true that from the beginning of their introduction to each other there was a sort of familial-like possibility of bonding. They were friendly with each other and they got along, but more than that Mitsuko also acted a bit like a big sister around him. It was hard for it to not rub off.

Zach hummed briefly to express his amusement. “Okay, that’s good to know,” he replied, ever so hesitantly patting her back in response. It reminded Zach of how he felt whenever Alicia looked like she was about to get emotional. Zach didn’t mind receiving light affection, but serious stuff tended to silence him and evoke semi-awkward reactions out of him.

Her question immediately caused Zach to make a grossed out face. “Yeah, seriously, don’t want to know,” he said, shaking his head as his shoulders went up. Logan implying things wasn’t as bad as her outright saying them. Implications he could live with, but detailed admittance was too much information. “I mean, it’s great and all,” he said, “but I don’t wanna know.” Zach purposefully grinned like a dork at her.

Mitsuko smiled as Zach hugged her back. She knew she'd taken him by surprise and he was a little uncomfortable with the showing of affection, but she couldn't bring herself to care. As she hugged him, she gave his hair an affectionate ruffle. The longer she stayed in Elysium, remained in one place, the more she realized how lonely her former life was. She craved close friends-- family.

She laughed softly at Zach's awkward words as they pulled away. "I promise in the future, I won't even mention the possibility, even in the negative." She held up two fingers, mimicking the Boy Scout salute. "Just to keep all images out of your head."

She laughed even harder at Zach's discomfort. "Oh, lighten up." She gave him a soft shot in the arm. "It's not like I'd give you a play-by-play." She wrinkled her nose playfully. "So does this mean I shouldn't give Adrienne any more lingerie as presents, just so we can stay completely and utterly out of each other's sex lives?"

Zach squeezed his eyes shut as Mitsuko ruffled his hair. It certainly reminded him of his younger sister and how she liked to mess with him whenever they were hanging out. They hadn't spent much time together lately, but Alicia was growing up and doing her own thing instead of hanging out with big brother. It started to happen somewhere before her seventeenth birthday. Zach missed those familial moments when they started to occur less and less.

"You're a good person," Zach asserted with a nod and a little grin on his face. "Just to keep the images out of my head is all the excuse you need."

"Shut up." Zach's face was turning slightly red at her pokes to his discomfort. "I don't need a play-by-play to get scarred for life, just saying," he added with a laugh. He looked up at her when she mentioned it was her who had been giving Adrienne lingerie gifts. Zach wasn't sure what to say to that until after he thought about it for a moment. "Now, that is okay," he told her. "In fact, encouraged." Zach raised his eyebrows and nodded approvingly just to show her he was serious about it. A silly grin followed afterwards.

Hanging out with Zach like this was great. But there was a pang of guilt deep in her heart. She wished it was so easy to hang out with Logan. But the boy was still dealing with his own shyness, his own wounded psyche. As much as Mitsuko loved him and tried to be a sister to him, they had not yet reached the point where they could simply hang out together for fun. Maybe eventually. Maybe Zach would be able to help her with that.

She smiled a bit wryly at Zach's description of her as a good person. She didn't really think of herself as a good person. Yet for some reason, in Elysium, she kept on hearing that description of herself.

She rolled her eyes at Zach's request she keep giving Adrienne lingerie. She had been planning to do so anyway, but she couldn't help but needling him by fussing with his hair once again.
