Saturday: January 26, 2008
Who: Chris, Hayate, and eventually Elven guards
When: Late Morning
Where: Hayate's cottage
What: Time to pay the piper

"Hayate?" Chris's voice was clear in the quiet air of Hayate's cottage. She looked up at the vampire from her position on his lap. She had laid her head on his leg while she flipped through one of her old manga. For all intents and purposes it was an innocent scene between the girl and the vampire. "What's this say?" She held the book high above her, and pointed to an advertisement inside of the front cover. It was in Japanese, and the young girl still didn't know how to read the language.

"Maybe you can teach me sometime," Chris suggested once Hayate gave her the translation. "If you have the time," she said as she looked up at him. Her book was closed, and lying on her tummy now. "If you do I can teach you German." There was a silly grin on her face as she tried to imagine Hayate speaking German. "Sprechen Sie Deutsch?" She asked with a small laugh. "That means 'do you speak German?'."

There were times when she felt more at home with Hayate than she did at the water bungalow with Riley. Not that Riley wasn't nice! She really was, and Charlie liked her a lot, but Chris spent more time with Hayate than anyone else. It was probably detrimental to the girl seeing as she was at an impressionable age, but she was blinded by her feelings for the man. She knew of the evils he could commit, and she had little doubt that he had done so over and over again in the past. He had even shown her the darkness of his character once, and still she forgave him.

She was perfectly happy with him, and she didn't want to be anywhere else than lying on his lap for the rest of the day.

Hayate held a glass in his free hand, drinking a somewhat tasteless but bittersweet liquid from it. His other hand rested on the young girl’s head, idly stroking her hair. The stillness of such simple and long moments did not bother Hayate at his age, for he had developed a certain archaic patience when he was not in a feeding frenzy. He enjoyed lounging on the sofa with her, merely drinking from his glass as she read one of her manga books. She had so many of those.

He gazed at the page when she lifted the book and asked him to tell her what the advertisement said. Hayate cocked his head to the side as he read it. “It says, ‘Drink Koko Loco. Drink Light. Drink Right. The Drink of the Tropics.’” His eyebrows drew together as he read a little further down the advertisement. “It looks like some sort of milk drink with vanilla and coconut flavoring.” Hayate was not particularly aware of this product, but it was not a surprise given that it was a human beverage. He had only ever paid attention to liquor products when mass marketing became popular in the world.

“I’ve never heard of it before,” he said, taking another sip of juice in his glass. He was falling into strange habits around the girl, such as drinking human beverages when he should have been drinking blood. Of course, he did have the latter whenever he wanted it. He got it from her.

“Hmm,” he said in reply to teaching her Japanese. If she wanted to know, then perhaps he could teach her. Whether or not he had the aptitude of a teacher was yet to be seen, though. A little smile came to his face as she spoke some German, and he decided to amuse her by repeating it. “Sprechen Sie Deutsch,” Hayate announced, not bothering to make it sound like a question. “I’ve never been to Germany.” He brought the glass in his hand to his lips. “Although, maybe I should have,” the vampire considered out loud.

"Koko Loco?" She looked at the advertisement, and wrinkled her nose in confusion. "It doesn't sound very good. It probably tastes gross. Why not just drink normal milk?" Chris made a face in disgust, and then stuck out her tongue as if the mere thought of it made her want to throw up. She closed her book afterward, and settled further into his lap. She loved having her hair stroked, and if she were a cat she would probably be purring. There was a smile on her face though, and she sometimes let out contents murmurs.

Chris opened her eyes when Hayate spoke German. "That was good," she said before she sat up on the couch. She turned to face him, her knees touching the side of his leg. "I've never been to Germany either, but I have been to Switzerland. That's where my parents are from," she began to explain. Her heritage had never come up in conversation before, or at least not that she could remember. The topic of parents was something that Chris shied away from since it evoked some emotion from the girl, but so far she hadn't even teared up.

"We have a house there, in Switzerland, I mean. If we ever get to leave here I'll take you there," she suggested enthusiastically. "It would be nice. Like a vacation!" She giggled softly, and then leaned in close to the vampire to hug him. Her arms went around his neck, and she nuzzled her nose into his cheek. "Would you want to go with me," she asked softly against his skin.

Chris sat up beside him on the sofa, and Hayate’s eyes followed her. He leaned forward to reach the small table at the foot of the sofa, placing his glass on the surface. It was true she did not speak much about her family, but her family was not here with her — save for the boy, her twin. He tried to recall if he had ever travelled to Switzerland, but he did not recall going that far into the European continent. Hayate had mostly seen the coastal countries, staying as close to water as possible. Considering he had done his world travelling during a time when foreigners were frowned upon, he liked to keep himself near the shores for a quick exit to avoid trouble. His feet never reached the landlocked countries of Europe.

Her arms suddenly wound around his neck, and so he rested a hand upon her back. It was nice to be hugged by the girl. Few people saw him in such a light, and she was kind where she had no reason to be. Hayate wondered how she — or how the boy Zach — would react if they knew of his activities a few days ago with a certain young woman out in the woods. Hayate dismissed the thought, though, as easily as it came to him. He had no reason to trouble them with reality. Everyone was so caught up in the dream. Who was he to break it?

“That would be nice,” Hayate said, sounding idle in his response, though he wondered what the hills looked like in Switzerland and if it would remind him of other places he once knew in person. The peace of his many months in Elysium, however, came to an abrupt end when the door suddenly flew open, kicked in by the force of feet.

Hayate’s arm tightened around Chris, his eyes alight with alarm and then fury at the intruders. He would have shielded her if he thought them dangerous, but he knew instantly who they were and who they had come for — they were the law here, and they were after him.

If Chris found out about his recent activities she would have never believed it. Hayate could do no wrong in her mind, and anyone who dared to accuse him of any crime was clearly out of their mind. The vampire was wonderful no matter what crimes he may have committed, and though their existence may have been a dream it was better than whatever reality existed outside.

The vampire didn't sound excited about the prospect of going to Switzerland, and his response brought a frown to Chris's face. Well he didn't have to go if he didn't want to, but Chris thought it would be fun. She wasn't going to bother him about it anymore though she did keep her arms wound around his neck. "Yeah, it would," she said with a small pout. She kissed his cheek, and was about to sink away from him when the front door burst open. Chris gasped out loud, and clung closer to Hayate as she stared at the Elven men who now entered the cottage one at a time.

There were at least fifteen of them, and they all marched in to form a semi-circle around herself and the vampire. Chris's jaw dropped slightly as she stared wide-eyed at the men that surrounded them. "Hayate..." she said in a voice filled with fear.

"Citizen," spoke one of the guards. Given the extra adornment on his uniform he was no doubt the leader. "You are hereby directed to cease, and desist all activities, and accompany us to Town Hall regarding the attack on a female therianthrope three days prior. You will be taken to the dungeons for immediate incarceration. Should you resist, you will be forcibly removed from your home, and it will marked in your record for future reference."

The male elf didn't even blink when he recited his speech, and Chris felt herself swallowing a lump in her throat. She was scared, and she had no idea what to do.

Authorities. Hayate had dealt with them on some occasions in the past, but most of the time he never had to because he was good at avoiding them altogether. It was not going to be as easy to accomplish that here, though. They did not have mostly humans for guards. For some reason, elves were the popular choice and each person who filed into his house was clearly an elf. They were stronger than him. He could probably fight for a short period of time, but where would he run to? They would get him in the end, so fighting seemed pointless.

Unlike Chris who had stiffened in his arms, the vampire relaxed as much as possible on the sofa. He gazed between the different elves as if he had no care in the world, and at the moment, he truly felt that way. He was going to respond calmly despite their accusations. After all, Hayate was waiting to hear them properly read him his rights and inform him in more detail of exactly what they had on him in the first place.

“One,” Hayate began smoothly, “what attack? Two, what therianthrope? And three, what sort of proof do you even have to be busting down my door in the middle of the day?” His questions all ended with a final statement. “Also, I do believe you have to read me my rights before you have the jurisdiction to take me anywhere.”

His arm stayed firmly around Chris, and he was not content to move it until they told him more about what they knew in the first place.

Chris looked at Hayate with wide, blue eyes. Though his posture relaxed his arm remained firm around her body. She had no idea what was going on exactly, and all she could glean from the elf's words was that someone had been attacked. Did they think that Hayate was the one responsible?

Her brow furrowed, and she cuddled closer to Hayate. There was no way she was going to let them take him away. Maybe she didn't have any powers, but she wouldn't give up without a fight. But elves were kind of big, and strong, and she wouldn't be of any use in a fight.

"Your questions will be answered once we have escorted you to Town Hall. We ask that you come with us without further delay. If you are referring to the Miranda Rights commonly read to suspects in the former United States of America, that statute does not hold any ground here in Elysium. There are certain rights granted under criminal accusations, but those will be read to you once you arrive at Town Hall."

The lead elf took a step forward, and the other elves followed in suite making the semi-circle tighter. "Citizen. You will release your hold on the young lady, and accompany us to Town Hall immediately."

At those words Chris's hold on Hayate tightened, and she glared at the elf. She wasn't going to be separated from him, no matter what they said.

Hayate actually felt a smirk creeping onto his features. “Boy, you’re good,” he said to the elf, a slight mocking tone to his words. If they did not want to read him his rights until he arrived at town hall, then he doubted he could force them into it. There were too many of them, and it would be a pointless battle to attempt to fight.

The vampire held his chin up and aimed a serious look at the leader of the group. “Since I am a responsible citizen, I will accompany you to town hall in order to prove my innocence. I also request a lawyer as I understand you do still have to have a lawyer here.” Hayate played his cards as carefully as possible, and as much as he wanted to tear each and every one of the guards apart, he knew he did not have a winning chance in such a situation. Going along with them was the best decision to make for now.

He looked over at Chris, and it was odd how a part of him suddenly felt worried about the young girl. Worry, in whatever form, was new to the vampire and it was still a hard thing for him to accept as something he should feel. Hayate particularly never liked the feeling when it came, but it was there and he could not do much about it when it settled into his chest and rooted itself there.

“As for the young lady, she comes with me if she wants to,” Hayate told them, glancing back up at the guards. “I doubt you’ll deny her that, will you?” Chris had a right to go wherever she wanted to go as far as he was concerned, even if that was to follow them all to town hall so that they could place him under arrest.

Hayate would not have even stood a chance against one elf, let alone fifteen of them. They certainly didn't take any chances, and Chris wondered why so many of them were sent to Hayate's cottage. She looked between the vampire, and the guards, waiting to see who would make the next move. She thought that Hayate would continue to resist, but he finally agreed to follow them to Town Hall. Chris looked at him with worried eyes, tugging on his arm and shaking her head "no" in protest.

"You will be provided a lawyer if that is your wish," said the guard to Hayate. "And the full list of charges will also be revealed to you once you have arrived at Town Hall. But we must insist that the young lady do not accompany us. This is a private matter, and it does not concern her."

Chris stood to her feet then. "You can't tell me what to do. I can go if I want." She crossed her arms over her chest, and lifted her chin a little higher. She was rebelling against authority, especially when the authority was nothing but a bunch of jerks. The head guard arched an eyebrow at the young girl, and with a nod of his head the guard nearest to Chris lifted her up by her shoulders. Chris squeaked, and began to kick her legs.

"LET ME GO! LET ME GO!"

The guard paid little attention to her as he displaced her to the side, outside of the near impenetrable semi-circle. He turned his back on her even though she continued to pound her fists against his back. She was of little consequence to the guards, and they had strict orders to bring in Hayate only. Anyone else would be ignored.

Hayate loosened his arm around Chris to hold out both of his arms on either side of himself. “If you’re arresting me, it’s hardly a private matter,” Hayate replied in a calm manner. After all, he would probably be the talk of the town within a mere matter of days. No, this definitely was not a private matter, and it was strange that they would deny her following them to the town hall building.

His eyes followed Chris as she stood up and protested out loud to the guards. Hayate was not expecting her to be so forward with them since they were official guards, but the girl was headstrong. It was one of the many qualities he liked about her. Even if she was small, she had an attitude that could not be beat. Her choice to be outspoken in a moment like this actually brought the faintest presence of a smile to his face.

The smile was wiped off his face as one of the guards picked up Chris by the shoulders like she was a thing, dropping her off on the other side of their circle formed around his sofa. There were few things in this world that infuriated the vampire, but one of those things was touching Chris in any way that upset the young lady. Hayate shot up from his seat and retrieved a heavy, blunt object from beneath his sofa that looked similar to a cane or staff. Whatever it was, it was certainly meant as a weapon.

Without thinking about how his actions would be perceived, the vampire leapt over his furniture and swung fast enough to surprise the young elf who had grabbed Chris. The thick metal staff collided with the elf’s face and sent him flying to the floor, but it was all of the two seconds that Hayate was allowed to fight back. The second swing hit a random elf in the stomach, and third collided with yet another elf’s head. The circle swiftly closed upon Hayate’s form, though, a strong hand catching the staff and ceasing it as Hayate tried for a fourth swing.

“Take him to the dungeon!” the leader announced.

Despite their strength, the elves still had a hard time subduing the vampire as he struggled to get out of their hold. Hayate could put up a hell of a fight when he was incensed, and the elf had done just enough to get him that way.

The attack was over as quickly as it began, and though Chris did not see the details of it she pieced together the scene from the injuries that a couple of the elves were now sporting. She was furious, and as the elves began to cart Hayate away she marched after them with fierce determination.

"I am so telling Mister Dylan what you guys did!" Though her voice still held many childlike qualities, there was a tenacity within the tone that could not be overlooked. "Did you hear me! You've got big enough ears, I know you heard me!" She continued to go after them, pushing on the very last of the elves that just happened to be at the end of the line.

"You guys can't just drag him away like that! You're going to get into so much trouble!" Tears were welling up in her eyes, and she bit on her lower lip to stop her quivering. "Please don't take him away," Chris said even though she knew it wouldn't help. She was still keeping pace with the elves, occasionally throwing pebbles, and sticks at their backs. "You're not allowed to take him!"

Her grievances were being ignored, and there was only so much a young girl could take before she became too frustrated to continued. She squealed angrily through the tears that were falling down her cheeks. Hayate was being dragged away to dungeons, and there was nothing she could do about it. She hated herself then, and she came to a stop in the middle of the path. Chris didn't know what to do except cry, and she did so as she ran all the way home.
