Who: Scarlet and Max
When: Late Afternoon
Where: Scarlet's Bungalow
What: Scarlet hits the wrong person with a snowball and perhaps it was meant to be (let me know if this is okay!)

Scarlet didn't care about the little ice skating moment she had with Tarani. She called that a moment of giving into the positive aura that was around her. The new acquaintance had some sort of cheer about her that was hard to say no to and now awake and into the day of Christmas Scarlet found herself in her kitchen, gripping the edges of the counter. Children were throwing snowballs at her window, their giggles leaking into her living room. There was a twitch in her eyes and she closed them, pretending to be somewhere else in order to try and avoid them.

But she failed and found herself opening her window. "Stay the hell away from my Bungalow! Go and play somewhere else. This shit got tiring a half an hour ago!" Taking a scoop of snow from the exterior of her window she threw the snow towards the kids and had no idea that she hit someone else. Feeling satisfied, she closed the window and sat on her couch folding her arms.

"Just one of the million reasons why I am glad children are not in my game plan."

The whirl of emotions in Max’s head was too much for him to handle right now. He couldn’t go home because he didn’t want to be left alone in the silence with his thoughts, and his feet had to move. He had to move. He walked all the way out of town and to the water bungalows by the lake. It wasn’t frozen over yet, but the gray skies stretched out far ahead into a world of white snow and dark mountains on the hazy horizon. There were children laughing nearby, and Max wanted desperately to drown out the happy noise.

He kept walking. He couldn’t get the image out of his head. His mother being attacked by . . . by a thing. Her whole family being killed. Only she survived, but why . . . and what did that mean? Why hadn’t she ever told him? She always said it was a car accident, but the twins didn’t lie. They couldn’t have lied. They knew about other things they shouldn’t have known, so what they saw had to be real. But Max didn’t want it to be real. He didn’t want any of it to be real. . . .

Suddenly, something smacked him right in the ear. It was cold, and it broke apart, falling onto the shoulder of his jacket. It was a snowball. Someone threw a snowball at him. He had heard the yelling in the background like a buzz, but the shutting of the window was loud and clear. Max looked over just in time to see it.

He didn’t know what possessed him. He marched right up to the bungalow and banged on the door, waiting for it to open.

At first Scarlet closed her eyes and stubbornly wouldn't answer the door. It was probably one of the children mad because an adult decided to put them in their place via a snowball to whatever place on their body. But then she let out a few breaths to let her maturity set back in. Honestly, what was she doing throwing snow balls at children? It wasn't healthy to do if she seriously wanted a spot on the vice council. In fact it would even be a parent of one of the children.

For a moment she buried her head in her hands and chuckled slightly before she made her ways to the door. She should chuckle because for all she knew the person behind the door was going to rip her a new one.

Taking a deep breath, she opened the door but maintained a firm expression. "I'm sorry, but your child, or children should know better than find it amusing to throw snowballs at my house. While throwing a snowball back isn't necessarily mature, I do hope you'll get your children to stop in the future."

When Scarlet got a full view of the stranger, he looked a little too young to have a child. He also had remnants of what appeared to be random snow on his jacket.

"Oh..I'm..sorry. Di-Did I hit you?" She looked down and ran a hand through her hair with an embarrassed sigh.

"I thought you were one of the children." Yes, she knew how bad that sounded. "Wo-Would you like to come in. It's freezing outside."

Especially when you got pelted by a snowball.

The door swung open, and the woman on the other side immediately went into a diatribe about kids and snowballs. Max just gave her a tight-lipped smile until she stopped talking and seemed to have noticed that he didn’t look like a parent or that he was a little too young to have kids. Of course, he was too young in his own mind, but in reality thirty-two was a good age to be a parent in most cases. He spoke up right after she finished talking to correct her on her assumptions about him.

“I don’t have any kids,” Max ground out, maintaining the rigid smile on his face. It amplified the sarcasm in his voice. “But maybe next time, you could try looking at what you are throwing your snowballs at and try to actually hit the little bastards instead of someone else.” It didn’t take her long to see that she had hit him, and he nodded his head a little too enthusiastically, gesturing at the snow still on his shoulder. “As you can see, yeah.”

Max didn’t know what to say when she said she thought he was one of the children. He actually felt like he wanted to laugh, and he almost did. Instead, he huffed in amusement, glancing upward as he sighed and fought off an exasperated smile. “Do I really look that short?” he asked, leveling his eyes with her again.

He could have said no to her offer, but he figured she owed him anyway. Max walked right into her house, or what he assumed was her house, and turned around in the middle of the room to face her. “As I see it, you owe me a cup of coffee,” he said, pointing at Scarlet.

"Well you must have some sort of ability or desire to be invisible. I honestly didn't see you." She spat at him. "And at this moment I'm actually thinking taking the shot at you was just as refreshing." There was almost a smile on her face since he called children bastards. She wasn't all too fond of them either. Working at Casino's made her all too used to adults. Children made her near insane.

"No, you don't look that short. But maybe with that haircut your sporting, I thought you fit just perfectly with the children. Not to mention the jacket makes you perfect for blending in." So, he was one of those guys. As she suspected, not really the ones who wanted to be seen.

Stubbornly, Scarlet folded her arms and glared at him. "Though I don't owe you anything but a sincere apology, I myself could use a cup of coffee. So, what do you like in yours? I'll make a fresh pot."

The Dhamphir made sure the door was closed and headed to the kitchen to get the coffee going. "What the hell are you even doing out on Christmas?"

Max didn’t justify her comment about how taking a shot at him was refreshing. He kept quiet, but he made sure to continue his venomous scowl to get the point across to her nice and clear that he didn’t appreciate it. As much as she wasn’t fond of children, Max wasn’t fond of them either. He never kidded himself about whether or not he was a family guy; he always knew he wasn’t.

The lady’s jab at his haircut caused his mouth to fall open as he looked away and shook his head in disbelief. She took a stab at his hair of all things, which was pretty normal looking. It seemed she missed the stubble all over his face, the result of not shaving his face for a couple of days straight.

Inside of her house, he picked a spot on her sofa to plop himself down onto after he removed his jacket and threw it over the armrest. Max stubbornly crossed his arms and smiled a saccharine smile in her direction, letting her know he wasn’t going anywhere until she repaid him in one way or another. He was getting his coffee. It was the least she could do for pelting him with snow.

A smirk crossed his face. “Hmm, it is the season for giving,” he said, tilting his head to the side. “A spoon of sugar,” Max replied. “No cream, no milk.”

She left for the kitchen, her question to him hanging in the air. After a moment of silence, he finally answered her. “Avoiding people.” Clearly, he was failing miserably at it.

Scarlet smiled fondly while she began to let the coffee brew. "You take your coffee like I do. The whole milk and cream thing always disgusted me or made no sense to me." She sat at the sofa and invited Max to sit at the one across from her. "It seems to take away the real taste of coffee. It's like, what's the point. Right?"

Scarlet felt like that was a stupid conversation to start, but she always hated the frou frou coffee creamers and things. If you wanted coffee, drink coffee and drink it strong. Strong enough to have you productive for hours until you crashed. It was unavoidable. Damn caffeine. Scarlet wasn't really an over energetic person anyways, but who could deny caffeine to keep one going?

The Damphir gave a knowing smile and a small "Ahh" when he said "Avoiding people." Crossing her legs, she tilted her head. "Is that code for "you don't want to talk about it? I can understand. After all, I am the woman who hit you with a snow ball."

If she maybe made him feel more comfortable, perhaps he would lighten up.

Max shrugged, though he agreed about the whole coffee thing. He liked it black for the flavor, but a little bit of sugar went a long way to make it more appealing. Plain coffee tasted like steaming cardboard and dish cleaner, and it wasn’t the best flavor in the world. “My mom used to put milk in it when she made it in the morning,” he said randomly. “Dunno why. She did it with mine for a while, too, until I started making it myself.” Max had been a teenager at the time.

He glanced over at her from where he sat. What he said next had to have been a result of the stress he was going through. Max wasn’t normally this flat honest, even with women. “A very sexy woman, who is clearly out of my league,” he said, lifting a hand to point a finger at her, “that hit me over the head with a snowball.”

Max took in a deep breath and let his head fall back against the couch. “I just need a sledgehammer to bash my head in now.”

Scarlet's blush rose on her face like she had suddenly been hit with a snowball. Karma was a bitch. She laughed lightly before turning towards Max. "Trust me. I have heard that before. But one quality always ruins people's attraction towards me." Not that it was a bad thing. She probably was a controlling bitch when it came to relationships or even one night stands. Not to mention she was bossy at times. Some men probably liked it, some men hated it. All she knew was in the workplace? She was scary. "I-I'm Scarlet. You can call me Scarlet." She waved a hand and chuckled, her face still hot. "You're very attractive. Even when still covered with snowball fluff." She flicked a stray piece still in his hair.

She got up when she heard the coffee pot bubbling and she smiled still, feeling a bit like an idiot for going into the realms of acting like someone younger. She had to be older than him by perhaps...she didn't know. Her head was too busy.

"What was your mom like?" She didn't know why the question suddenly sputtered out. "I have a hammer by the way. Is that good enough?" She teased.

Max couldn’t help but grin as his head lay against the back of the couch. “Hey, I’m no catch,” he said, raising his hands in defeat. He lifted his head. “I’ve got more than one quality that ruins me, so at least you’re doing better off.” The list of his faults was long and unpleasant, and to add to that, he’d never had a stable or long-term relationship. Max just wasn’t the type of guy anyone brought home to their mother. He could put on a good show for a while, but eventually the charm wore off.

“Hmm, Scarlet.” He glanced over and noticed her face was red. It was actually kind of cute. “Your cheeks are agreeing with you there,” he commented, sounding just a little snarky. Not in a mean way, of course. “I’m Max.”

Her admission surprised him. Half of the time he got compliments for his looks, and usually it went to his head. Maybe it was the blushing that made her compliment of him stand out like a sore thumb. “Well, thank you,” he said. It was oddly genuine.

They chatted for a bit more in the comfort of her living room before Max had to leave her company. He needed some time for himself today. All of these random encounters weren't his usual style, and the silence of his home seemed like a good idea for now.
