Tuesday: December 25, 2007 Who: Max, Daiyu, and Jia When: Morning Where: The Cafe What: Holidays just aren't his thing.
He really needed to shave. Max was letting himself become more unkempt than usual lately because he didn't feel like taking care of those things whenever the holidays crept up on him. Today was Christmas, but no one would have guessed the day by just looking at him and him alone. He was a train wreck on wheels with his unshaven face, messy hair, and the dark circles underneath his eyes. He sat at one of the tables outside alone, the way he preferred it. His overstuffed blue jacket almost made it impossible to function with the proper arm movement needed to drink his coffee, but Max didn't care. He didn't care about a lot of things on this day.
Memories of his mother came to the surface, causing him to pinch the bridge of his nose and force them away. He blinked open tired, bloodshot eyes and lowered his hand. The coffee wasn't waking him up worth a damn. He should've asked for expresso shots. Three would have done the trick. He placed his cup onto the table and looked at his surroundings, drinking in the sight of all the different people around him. This was what he did on Christmas: He observed other people and spent his time alone. No friends, no women. Just the silence and a good cup of coffee.
It was a shitty cup of coffee this morning, but he could overlook that fact.
Max wiped a hand over his face and tried to bring the world back into focus. He had a rule on Christmas. He tried to talk to as few people as possible, but he noticed the two girls at the table across from his left. He noticed them because they looked like imperfect mirror reflections of each other. They were cute as well, but he wasn't looking for that reason. He was butting in on someone else's life, his curiosity getting the best of him. They acted like family. Family. The one thing he didn't need to be thinking about.
"Are you two sisters?" Max inquired, speaking loud enough for them to hear him. "You look related." Or I'm just being an asshole, he thought. Either is possible.
