Tuesday: December 25, 2007
Who: Max, Daiyu, and Jia
When: Morning
Where: The Cafe
What: Holidays just aren't his thing.

He really needed to shave. Max was letting himself become more unkempt than usual lately because he didn't feel like taking care of those things whenever the holidays crept up on him. Today was Christmas, but no one would have guessed the day by just looking at him and him alone. He was a train wreck on wheels with his unshaven face, messy hair, and the dark circles underneath his eyes. He sat at one of the tables outside alone, the way he preferred it. His overstuffed blue jacket almost made it impossible to function with the proper arm movement needed to drink his coffee, but Max didn't care. He didn't care about a lot of things on this day.

Memories of his mother came to the surface, causing him to pinch the bridge of his nose and force them away. He blinked open tired, bloodshot eyes and lowered his hand. The coffee wasn't waking him up worth a damn. He should've asked for expresso shots. Three would have done the trick. He placed his cup onto the table and looked at his surroundings, drinking in the sight of all the different people around him. This was what he did on Christmas: He observed other people and spent his time alone. No friends, no women. Just the silence and a good cup of coffee.

It was a shitty cup of coffee this morning, but he could overlook that fact.

Max wiped a hand over his face and tried to bring the world back into focus. He had a rule on Christmas. He tried to talk to as few people as possible, but he noticed the two girls at the table across from his left. He noticed them because they looked like imperfect mirror reflections of each other. They were cute as well, but he wasn't looking for that reason. He was butting in on someone else's life, his curiosity getting the best of him. They acted like family. Family. The one thing he didn't need to be thinking about.

"Are you two sisters?" Max inquired, speaking loud enough for them to hear him. "You look related." Or I'm just being an asshole, he thought. Either is possible.

Christmas made Jia hyper, Daiyu could bet her life on it. It wasn't just about the gifts, it was about the decorating. Their house was painted in all sorts of memorabilia that reminded them of their home. Jia would cook home recipes made on Christmas and days ahead of time she told her sister that they were heading out to the town to enjoy the holiday. Of course, Daiyu forgot.

"Come on, let's go for a walk!" Jia insisted, trying to tug a hungover Daiyu out of bed. "If my eyes are closed and I'm within the sheets of my bed, what does that mean?" She inquired to her sister. Jia pretended to ponder the question for a moment before a smile painted across her face. "It means get off your fat ass and walk with me!" Hitting Jia with her pillow, Daiyu motivated herself to get up. Coughing, she sneaked a peak at her behind before she got dressed and followed her sister towards the town.

Daiyu's strides were slow and lazy while Jia's were bouncy and excited. "Can you believe we are here for Christmas!?" Daiyu glared at her sister while she lit up a cigarette. "..Joy." Her sister slightly frowned and Daiyu cursed under her breath. She really should have been trying harder since it was Christmas. It took some motivation, but she wrapped an arm around her sisters shoulders and walked at a faster pace with her.

When they settled into the Cafe they ordered their coffee and actually began telling stories back and forth about the good times, the bad times and things they could work on. Of course, when Daiyu noticed some hot ass guy coming towards them she stopped talking. "Whoa shut up. Some hot guy is coming our way."

When he spoke to them, Daiyu gave him a sweet, yet saucy smile. "We can be whatever you want us to be." Jia kicked her sister's leg under the table. "Yes, we're twins." She confirmed, then tilted her head. "Merry Christmas! Uhm..would you like to sit with us?"

Daiyu wanted to laugh out loud. Her sister simply sucked with guys.

The first thing Max thought he looked like today was shit, but apparently he still had some swagger on his off days. It certainly boosted his confidence, and he couldn’t help but crack a smile as one of the girls clearly hit on him. His ego probably shot up twenty points because of that. Max barely noticed the kick under the table, if he noticed it at all, and he playfully raised his eyebrows along with his cup of coffee as he took a seat at their table. “Don’t mind if I do,” he said, settling himself into the chair.

“So, you’re twins? Can’t say I’ve met a whole lot of twins in my life.” Why was he even talking to them? He didn’t talk to people on Christmas, and he didn’t interact with the outside world. For some reason, he was breaking those rules today. Maybe it was the lack of company in general that got him to open his mouth to complete strangers. He hadn’t seen anyone he knew lately except for Mitsuko, and he didn’t really know her. They were more like acquaintances.

He looked carefully between the two of the girls at the table. “Or are you just pretending to be twins?” Max asked them, the corner of his mouth curled up in amusement. Up this close, he noticed some differences. It wasn’t hard to question it when one of them made the pass that she did. Maybe they were just kinky like that. Besides, a little kinkiness might take his mind off other things. Max welcomed the distraction.

Jia moved her sister further over to make sure Max was comfortable sitting with them. While she was sure Daiyu was all sorts of ready to try and invade his personal space, she at least wanted to give Max some room to cut and run if Daiyu decided to be too much. "Yes, we're twins. We do everything we can to not look all to much like each other." Jia almost proudly stated. While sometimes they couldn't help but appear the same by coincidence, they couldn't bring themselves to be the twins who wore matching clothes. Even if they grew up really liking each other.

Daiyu tilted her head. Something about him seemed really interesting. It wasn't just that he was attractive, but it seemed like he wasn't normally the guy who made conversations. Maybe Christmas made him more likely to try and talk to people. Some people were lonely, hell even curious. Jia used to play a game where she guessed people's lives from afar. She'd do the whole story of ones life in thirty seconds. What a silly girl.

"So what do you think about Christmas in fairy tale land?" Daiyu asked playfully. "It's got to pretty weird celebrating Christmas in..well..a place that's not really your own home." Daiyu stated with a sigh, sipping her coffee gingerly. "Do you have family here?" She continued, setting her still hot cup aside.

Jia bit her lip. She wasn't sure if asking about family was a wise thing to do on Christmas. For some reason it could be depressing.

Ah, so they really were twins. It killed the fantasy in his head. It was doubtful a real pair of twins would engage in a ménage à trios. Well, he could still dream about it at least.

He leaned back in his chair and glanced over at the one talking. She seemed to be a lot more proper than her sister, the outgoing one to his left. He could tell she was outgoing from the very first thing she said to him. Most people didn’t make an opening like that one. Max grinned and shook his head. “You fail miserably,” he said, commenting on them trying to look separate from each other. If they were trying so hard, it certainly didn’t show. All he saw was a hot pair of twins. Max mentally chastised himself. He really needed to stop thinking along that route of thought.

Max wasn’t the type to normally make conversation, but it was happening today for some strange reason that was probably concocted by fate. He was wearing his mother’s ring on his finger, something of hers he still had in his possession even though they parted ways so long ago. Everyday he missed his mother, and days like these just reminded him more of her. It was like a subconscious ritual for him to wear the ring on special days, just trying to close to her once again. He knew she was dead from the virus; he just knew it, but it didn’t stop him from wishing or hoping against all odds that maybe she was still out there somewhere. Maybe she survived.

He broke out of his reverie to the scene before himself again. Max was sitting with two girls, twins, and he had invited himself over. One of them asked him a question, and he shifted in his seat, clearing his throat. “It’s . . . like every other Christmas,” he stated honestly. There wasn’t anything special about it to him. He didn’t answer the second question because he didn’t have any family here and family was a topic he would rather avoid.

“So, what are your names?” Max asked, looking between the two of them. He had no idea who to hold his hand out to first. “My name’s Max.” After a moment of debate, his extended both hands, one to each of the girls. The ring was on his left hand. There was a small smile on his face. “And I’m a little late, but Merry Christmas.” It was a very belated response, but at least he finally said it. It was hard to break out the holiday cheer.

Daiyu laughed at him. "That shitty huh? I know where that comes from. I used to say the same thing in response about my Christmas' when they sucked. But then again, sometimes people just are very reformed when it comes to Christmas, so I could be very wrong about your response." She poked at Max, tilting her head with a cheeky smile. It was true, when she didn't know people all that well and they asked Daiyu about Christmas, she kept her answers short since she wasn't a huge fan.

Jia was the first to offer her hand. "Hi max!" It was easy to see she was the brighter one. "I'm Jia. This here is Daiyu." Though she was expecting a zinger about how Daiyu didn't get to introduce herself, Daiyu just have a small wave. "That would be me." She shortly stated before she continued on. "And a very merry one to you too. Plan to get plastered or anything? Getting shitfaced is a fun pastime you know."

The more tame of the two gave a slightly annoyed breath and shook her head. "You know there is also ice skating and things too." Daiyu gave her sister a nudge. "But getting wasted is much more fun"

After a long pause and a scooting in of her chair since a couple decided to steal a chair from behind Daiyu, the more eccentric psychometric decided to ask the big question.

"Been here long?"

Max opened his mouth to reply to Daiyu when she leaned over and poked him in the arm. It caused the man to jump a little because he wasn’t expecting that. Physical contact usually startled him. He wasn’t the type to be used to it. He let out an amused huff, shaking his head. “I’m not a big fan of Christmas,” he said honestly.

He shook both of their hands, even found it in himself to manage a smile during the process. It wasn’t too hard. They were nice girls. “Nice to meet you two,” he replied, glancing between them. “Jia,” Max said appropriately to the one named Jia. She was the ‘softer’ one. “Daiyu.” Her question about whether or not he planned to get plastered put a huge smile on his face, and Max had to laugh. “Eh, not yet, but before the night is through, I’ll probably be smashed.” He had to agree. He liked a little alcohol to dull the senses, or was it enhancing to some while deadening to others?

Jia seemed nice, but he had to agree more with Daiyu’s choice. Daiyu was definitely the type of person he could hang out and have a fun time with, but it didn’t stop Jia from being interesting in her own right. In fact, Jia was the perfect type of person to lure into doing stuff she normally wouldn’t do just for the hell of it. If it weren’t Christmas and his mood was brighter, he’d give it a try. But it was his Christmas, and his mood was in the dumps.

He looked back to Daiyu, shrugging his shoulders. “Nah, I haven’t been here that long.” Max paused for a moment, reaching up to rub his nose. “It’s strange, too. There’s all these . . . different people here.” He quickly corrected himself. “Not races, you know. Just . . . people who aren’t human.” Max frowned a little. “I mean, I can do strange things, but I’m still human. It’s been weird getting used to that not being the case here for other people — the whole being human part.” He looked up quickly, glancing at the sisters. “You two are human, right?”

It wasn’t in his plans to offend them, and he wasn’t so sure if he had just done that or not.

"Whoa!" Daiyu began to chuckle, but waved a hand in a gesture that she was mot mocking poor Max. "You're like a virgin here!" She knew how to evade her sister kicking her in the leg, so she did so. Afterwards she gave her sister a triumphant smile before she continued. "I mean, I remember how scared I was when I got here. The minute we walked in there were Elven guards and shit. Then I saw faes and fauns. That shit had me thinking I was on weed permanently. But I was like that for about...maybe a week! I think you just have to worry about your abilities and think of yourself as a freak to fit in." She gave him a curious stare. "That is. If you have any. You seem the type. I don't know why."

Jia gave a huff. "Pardon her. No matter if someone kicked her ass for being such a rude bitch. She wouldn't change. But, in a nicer way of tone..I guess if you do just try to stay in an element of thinking about your own abilities and how they differ from humans, you'll feel less amazed. Though, I kind of miss being so amazed by this place."

The more tame of the two then lit up when Max said he had some sort of ability, or at least it seemed like he was referring to it. "You can do stuff?" Jia asked. Then Max asked the big question.

Shrugging Daiyu let the cat out of the bag. "We're psychometrics. I hate that the word "psycho" is in it sometimes because I feel like it makes us sound like we are some psychotic hybrids though my sister might agree to that on my end. We're like human, yeah. But we can touch things and know things about people or the past. It's pretty freaky shit. But sometimes I like it. Jia is more of the spaz about it."

The two weren't at all offended. In fact it felt good to talk about it at times. Max seemed like a perfect person to talk to about it.

Max actually rolled his eyes at Daiyu, though the smile on his face said he didn’t take it to heart. “Yeah, yeah,” he dismissed, tilting his head to the side. “It’s not everyday I hear that word attributed to me,” Max joked, scratching the side of his head as he grinned cheekily at them.

He tried his best to keep up with the two girls, but they were talking pretty fast and getting ahead of him. Max just nodded his head, though, agreeing that the shock of this place came pretty hard at first. It took time for him to get used to it. “Yeah, I know the feeling,” he concurred, and a little laugh escaped him a moment later. “First thing I ran into was a merman, believe it or not. Scared the shit outta me.”

Admitting he had an ability was hard. Max never had anyone to talk to about it before this place. “Yeah,” he said cryptically, but he didn’t say anymore yet, especially when Daiyu began to tell him what their abilities were. He raised his eyebrows, genuine interest shining in his eyes. “So . . . you can just touch something, and know stuff about who it belongs to? Like, intimate stuff?”

He was hoping suddenly they didn’t touch his jacket and get a whole whiff of the personal details in his life. Max liked to keep some things private.

Daiyu almost fell out of her chair. "I don't know what it is about the word merman, but it just cracks me up thinking about the vision of a merman. Nothing against people of the water and things, just the image makes me think of the little mermaid. You know? Triton? The grumpy ass father? Thanks to Disney I think all mermaids are under the ocean having a party without me."

Oh, so they had to do the "I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours" thing. Daiyu didn't mind. "Yep! Anything that leaves your body we can know anything and everything." Okay, maybe not everything, but even so. "It's saved my ass on numerous dates, gotten me jobs, helped me connect with people, is a bit of a lie detector. Seriously, it's awesome."

Jia nodded cautiously. "Yeah, I guess. But I have done it on accident and have found out things that I really didn't want to know." She admitted. "I'm the one who makes sure I am invited to look into people's little profiles as I like to call it. My sister is just an intrusive bitch and goes for it."

Jia actually lit up when she thought Max might tell her more. "Come on! What can you do!?"

Max laughed at Daiyu’s description of merpeople. Yeah, that movie probably tainted his image of them as well. He never really thought about it too much, but he did remember being shocked as hell when he had stumbled upon the man. “Well, that sounds like a useful tool to have,” Max said to Daiyu, but then he turned and found himself listening to Jia’s side of the story. It seemed the two sisters had a disagreement when it came to their ability.

“I guess it’s got its pros and cons,” he said. When he didn’t say anything else after that, Jia pushed him for more information. He smirked, though it was wary instead of cocky, and wondered if he should just show them. He only had one ability when it came down to it. Max didn’t really consider the other strange things about himself as powers. He moved his cup to the center of the table and held his hand across from it with a flat palm. He sent a rush of freezing air towards the cup of coffee and froze it into ice.

“I can change temperatures and stuff like that. Hot, cold . . . I can even make a little bit of wind, but that’s it.” It was his abilities in a nutshell, and it was weird to show them off to people for the first time. “Damn,” Max said. “Now, I need a new coffee.”

Daiyu gave somewhat of a snarky smile towards Max. "You know. You would make a killer coffee machine. If I want a frapa-whatever, you could make me one. Get some whip cream, caramel and the works and I'd be all set. You are quite useful." She teased and them moved on to a more serious tone. "Making a little bit of wind is pretty damn cool. That's like weather man shit right there. Could you be stronger if you practiced more? I'm not saying you suck or anything." Daiyu gave off a fond sigh. "If I could play around with the wind I would try and freak people out. Follow them with a bit of a wind pattern. If I was gay and a girl was wearing a skirt, I'd blow some wind to get a peak. I might just do it anyways because I might like her underwear." Yeah, Daiyu just said things bluntly. Jia just kind of gave her a stare like she was a borderline douche sometimes. Well, she was kind of.

Jia was the one though who gave a sly smile about the coffee. "You know. I could get you some coffee." Oh course there was a catch. "But you have to explain why you seem so down. You hide it well, but come on. You don't seem like a guy who usually strikes up conversation. People might always-or maybe usually have to either piss you off or start some conversation with you. Maybe I am just trying to see if I can get out what's bugging you. But I sense some Christmas suckage that has a reason for it besides what you told us."

She gave a friendly smile. "Oh come on. It's not like we're going to tell anyone. Daiyu might." She joked lamely. "But I wouldn't."

Max chuckled at her reference to him being a coffee machine. Well, sometimes he was a good freezer, but he never really tried to be a coffee machine. “Maybe,” he said, shrugging his shoulders. “You can always get better at something, but I’ve been doing it for a long time. Think I got it down by now, but you never know.” Max pursed his lips as he thought about it. He figured he did all the training possible to perfect it, but maybe he hadn’t. It was something for him to think about.

He laughed. “You’d blow up a girl’s skirt? Can’t say I’ve ever done that one.” Max gave a cheeky grin. “I like it when girl’s lift their skirts on purpose due to my smooth talking lines.” It was true he hadn’t done that one before. For some reason, blowing up a woman’s skirt just never crossed his mind.

Max glanced over at Jia as she urged him to speak. She was right. He wasn’t normally the type to strike up a random conversation. At least not in the condition he was in today, which was a pretty bad one. Still, he bit his lip and kept his silence a bit longer as he mulled it over. It seemed as if he wasn’t going to answer her, but finally he did.

“Just reminiscing,” Max revealed. “My mother. I haven’t seen her in a very long time.” His fingers twisted around the ring on his finger, and he looked down at it. Slowly, Max removed it and held it up as he stared at the ring. “Fifteen years to be exact.” He sighed and lowered his hand to the table as it still held the ring. “This ring was hers.”

Daiyu threw a cheeky grin right back at Max. "You know. You're headed in the right direction with the whole skirt thing. You're a smooth talker and you have a nice voice. Some people talk smooth but they don't have the best of voices. You got the two in one special." She teased, a devious brow raising. Was her sister still around? Oh, she forgot.

Jia was expecting Max to perhaps say something funny or blow her off. She wouldn't have blamed him. She kept prying him for maybe something a little too personal. They were having a fun time, but maybe if she pestered him too much he would feel too obligated to step outside his comfort zone and leave. She didn't want that. Though her sister's antics around him made her want to punch her, she liked having Max around. Not because she felt sorry for him, but because she found him very intriguing. There was something about him.

"I miss my parents very much." Jia admitted. "My mother especially. Sometimes, I swear I hear her voice at night. I'm a momma's girl. I'm not going to lie." She stated, blushing brightly. "I can't imagine what it's like to not have seen someone you care about in a long time."

Jia reached towards the ring.

"We can...touch it...if you like. By that I mean "take a peak"." Jia giggled a bit. "Don't worry. You'll get it back in one piece." She stated softly.

Daiyu was a funny chick. Max didn’t know talking about blowing up a woman’s skirt in the company of two women, and sisters on top of that, was ever a situation he might find himself in. This place had a tendency to do that to him: Put him in situations he wasn’t used to before.

Max wasn’t sure how to describe his relationship with his mom, but they had been very close when he was younger. They started to develop a rift in his teen years when he became rebellious and a troublemaker. While he thought about his mother and missed her dearly, his closeness to her was to be debated. It didn’t make him miss her any less, though.

The idea didn’t bother him, so Max handed the ring over to Jia when she reached out for it. “Go for it,” Max said, shrugging his shoulders. He was actually curious to what they might see. They both had an interesting ability in Max’s eyes.

It took a moment to see anything from the ring. It was almost like it was hiding something very intense and just within the small circle there was something protecting the truth from being uncovered. But Jia and Daiyu were fighting through it by squeezing the ring. Jia held it in her hand and Daiyu clasped her hand over her sister's. Finally, when Daiyu felt her sister's hand grow warm, there seemed to be some sort of spark.

There was a parking garage at first in their vision. It seemed to be ordinary. Then there was a sudden flash of a dinner. There was a celebration with smiles and laughter. Then suddenly it went back to the garage, to darkness. There was a woman walking in a speedy motion and their was fear all over her face. The poor woman was pregnant and some monster was chasing her. It was a vampire.

He was taunting her, the words were muffled but they could make out that he wasn't afraid to hurt the woman. It wasn't hard to guess that the victim was Max's mother. Once the guess ran through their minds, they saw the vampire bite the woman. Soon after, a police officer saved her. It was also then when Max's mother gave birth to him shortly after.

They slowly let go of the ring and set it on the table.

"I'm so sorry. But....But your mother was attacked. Did..did you know this? By..a..va-vampire?" Jia would have asked if she made it, but she simply stayed quiet.

Max was expecting anything but the information he was about to get from the twins. He handed over the ring, half expecting them to tell him something funny about his mother—not a horror story about how he was born. Then again, he didn’t get a chance to hear the details of the story. The second the words came out of her mouth, Max didn’t believe them. Well, he didn’t want to believe them.

Max took the ring back and slipped it on his finger. He wasn’t putting it in his pocket; he’d lose it. He stood up abruptly from the table, shaking his head. “No, I didn’t know that.” He wasn’t going to be dramatic and make a scene or deny it out loud. He didn’t want to believe it right then, but all he had to do was get out of the situation. That would make things right and put it out of his mind.

“I’m sorry,” Max said. “I have to go.” He left the table, along with his cold cup of coffee, and hurried away from them. Max didn’t want to believe in vampires, even if they were supposed to be real—and he wanted to believe in one of them attacking his mother least of all.
