Who: Nuray and Elijah
When: Midmorning Christmas Day
Where: Near the Bungalows and then the Ancient Elven Palace
What: Nuray and Elijah decided they were going to go to the Elven Palace together for Christmas.

If Jay was honest, he was glad he was not going to the Elven palace with Nuray. Not because he didn't find the idea absolutely intriguing but because he was not sure if he could manage to keep up with her absolute giddiness over the whole thing. It had been all she could talk about when they got back from ice skating. And anyone who knew Nuray for more than about ten minutes knew she could be very, very annoying when she was pushing toward things. So today, now that she was grabbing her things, her little kit of things to take with her. She'd developed a good memory from all the years the two of them had spent dealing with wrecks, so he didn't doubt she would be able to reproduce the layout of the palace and a lot of the artwork inside.

"Do you think this enough?" The question would have odd if he didn't know how often Nuray didn't dress appropriately. So she was standing there in her long pants, jacket and a knit hat. It looked appropriate. The slight excess webbing between her fingers made gloves not work so well on her hands. She wore the gloves if her hands started to get cold, but they didn't stay on for very long.

"I think you've managed to look normal," he picked up his book and went back to reading. "So you're going with a Water Elemental to an ancient Elven palace?" Jay commented wryly. "If you were my daughter, I'd say you were telling me a fib to sneak out and make time with your boyfriend."

"He's not my boyfriend, Jay," that discussion had occurred after Nuray told him about the man she met in the sweet shop and how there were funny cookies made to look like clowns and could he tell her what a clown was. As usual, he had blinked at the bombardment of questions and then proceeded to pick which one to answer first. In the end, they always covered everything anyhow. "We're just going to check out the history together. Promise."

"Well then I guess you better not keep him waiting." He didn't watch her leave. Nuray was 30, but sometimes he felt like she was fifteen and in need of a father figure. That was just him feeling like an old man undoubtedly.

With a bag thrown over her shoulder and her hair still managing to fly off her shoulders as she ran. She was heading toward the edge of the lake. They were going to met at the lake near the Bungalows. Nuray would have swum at least part of the way, but it was a freshwater lake. It wouldn't be good for her to make herself sick like that. Elijah could go to any water, Nuray needed salt. Hopefully she wasn't late. The woman didn't have a problem with time really, She just happened to always manage to get herself engrossed in things. It was still early because they wanted go while there was still good light.

Punctuality was something Aubert ingrained into Elijah since the moment of his creation. Everything had to be done exactly at an exact time, or else it would be an utter failure. Some habits faded as time passed without the alchemist; being on time, however, was not one of them. Elijah never held it against anyone else for being late, but he always made a point of being early.

He was already waiting for Nuray by the bungalows when she appeared. The ends of her dark hair were tousled from her run, and a smile twitched upon the corners of Elijah's mouth when he noticed the excitement in her eyes. At least he thought it was excitement. He hoped it was? Why was he hoping that she was excited? As a matter of fact, why was he excited? Maybe the energy Nuray exuded was somehow infectious, and if that was the case then he had to make himself immune somehow.

"You're early," he said evenly. Of course, the fact that he himself was early wasn't lost upon the elemental, and he knew his statement would either be met with confusion or a laugh. He took a step toward the mermaid, and held out his hand. "I'll take your bag," he offered. "And I got us two horses over there." He nodded his head to a nearby tree where two horses were indeed waiting for them.

The energy Nuray gave off was certainly infectious. She could make the most dour of individuals smile without doing anything different from what she normally did. She was just happy and it seemed impossible not to be happy around her. The run felt good in spite of the cold and she was hardly out of breath. Her endurance seemed to transfer from underwater to on land easily. When she drew up to him, she was all smiles and general enthusiasm. Some women got happy to talk about clothes, Nuray wanted to talk about the creation of civilizations and how that changed based on geography.

"Oh good," she chuckled at the awareness that she was early. "I was half worried I'd kept you waiting." If she'd been worrying it was impossible to tell from her expression.

The bag was full of rolls of paper and what looked like crayons. Some of them were just charcoal and she did have a few actual crayons so that she could do a quick sketch of things as she saw them. "You sure?" Giving up the bag wasn't a big thing, there was nothing in it she was terrified of him seeing. Unlooping it from over her shoulder, she held it out to him.

The idea of riding a horse made her happy all over again, if only because she didn't ride very often. It wasn't that she didn't know it was available to her, but simply because she didn't think of it. "They're lovely," the girl was easy to make happy. All enthusiasm she went to the horses and rubbed their noses. "Hello, it's very much a pleasure to meet you." Speaking to horses exactly as she might to another person.

Energy had a way of flowing from one thing to another; it was hardly ever stationary if it could help it. It was a law of physics, or something. Elijah found a smile creeping upon his face when Nuray spoke, and he shook his head. "Nope, I haven't been waiting long." Which wasn't exactly true, but to someone who had lived for over a hundred years waiting thirty minutes didn't feel like anything.

Chivalry wasn't a lost art with the elemental, and it was the reason he offered to take the mermaid's bag. It was surprisingly light, and he wondered what she had brought along with her. He was familiar with the idea of rubbings, but he had never made one himself. Elijah was more adept with annotation, and using his words to describe the world around him. It was the method of the alchemists to write down their experiments, results, and theories, and it wasn't until recently (recent being within the past fifty years) had Aubert dabbled with voice recordings. Despite the ease of creating "voice journals", all information that was on each spool of tape was written down in journals.

Elijah had brought the horses out of necessity. He really didn't want to walk all the way to the abandoned Elven palace, and from what he had heard from others it was a fair distance away. The snow on the ground would make it a more difficult trek as well. He didn't expect Nuray's reaction to the creatures, and he stood back to watch her interaction with them. Elijah couldn't remember the last time he was surprised by anyone's reaction to things, and it was somewhat nice to see such childlike curiosity in an adult.

"I'm glad you like horses," he said as he secured her backpack to her mount. He couldn't help but smile as she spoke to the animal, a smile that he reeled in the moment he noticed it upon his lips. "Do you need help getting on?" Chivalrous as always, this time Elijah offered her his hand to help her as she climbed into the saddle.

Nuray wasn't really old enough to know anything about Chivalry. Even if Jay did behave like a gentleman unless he was having a short tempered moment. There was always a chance he would be short tempered over something he was working on. Nuray had learned long ago it wasn't her, it was him and she shouldn't take it personally. Normally, she just kissed him and proceeded to go find something else to do out of his face.

Her reaction to the horses came mostly because she didn't deal with horses all that much. Other than the ride from the sea to the haven, she hadn't ridden a horse before. "Yes, please," she answered his question about needing help.

This was going to be so much fun.

There was a time when horses were the only way to travel from one place to another just so long as it wasn't too far. There was the railroad, too, but Elijah preferred the feel of the wind against his skin when he was traveling. Even on the trip to America Elijah spent most of his time on the ship's deck, through fair and stormy weather.

The elemental helped Nuray onto the horse's back, and stayed by her side until she was settled comfortably into the saddle. He didn't think to ask if she knew how t ride; he assumed she did since she was so comfortable around the creature. And considering where they now lived it was impossible traveling long distances without riding on a horse. Everyone in the haven had riding experience now, weather they wanted it or not.

They rode toward their destination, hoof beats muffled by the blanket of snow on the ground. Elijah stole occasional glances at Nuray, wanting to say something though nothing came to his mind. He wasn't a talkative person, but he felt he should have been for the mermaid's sake. He cleared his throat quickly, and turned toward her. "So have you traveled around Elysium much?" It was a stupid topic, he knew, but he never claimed to be a great conversationalist. In fact, he sort of sucked at it.

Nuray was actually rather used to dealing with long periods of silence where there was nothing but the ambient sounds of things to entertain her. She lived with a scholar after all and books didn't read themselves. Well, that wasn't completely true, but the time the world fell apart they had things called audio books which really did read themselves. It was interesting, but Nuray always found them a bit annoying especially since she couldn't pick who got to read to her, she was simply stuck with whomever it was they recorded. In her opinion, it was simply easier to read it herself.

He'd helped her up on the animal's back and though she had only a few experiences with riding horses, Nuray managed to look at those she'd been at it for a while. Other than a few slight missteps here and there like telling the horse to go backward when she meant forward anyway. Pretty good for someone who spent most of their life on the ocean.

His question made her turn to him, which in the act of doing so caused the horse to move in his direction as well, another little misstep on her part, though she managed to correct it before they collided. "I wander around a lot, but really I'm still exploring the saltwater lake. Getting familiar with the nooks, crannies, caves, that kind of thing." In a way, it was like having to find out every little thing about a new house. It took time and patience, but if you really wanted to get familiar with your living space you did exactly that.

Elijah was never sure when silence was a good, or a bad thing. He had met plenty of women who didn't enjoy quiet, women who thought the silence meant that something was wrong. Thankfully Nuray wasn't that type of woman, though the elemental didn't know that just by looking at her. It was the reason he sought out some topic of conversation with her so she wouldn't be upset with him if he was quiet.

"The saltwater lake is pretty big," he said with a grin. He had already explored it; rather, he connected with the water of the lake and innately learned about every aspect that lied beneath the surface. He would have offered to show Nuray the more elusive caves that were deep in the lake, so deep they were almost pitch black, but he already knew the girl was an explorer and she would want to find those places on her own. Still, she was on this trip with him, wasn't she?

"At least it'll keep you occupied for a while," he said. The palace was visible in the distance, but they still had a ways to go. Another twenty minutes at least, or less if they galloped the rest of the way. But it was nice just enjoying the scenery with a beautiful mermaid by his side. Maybe they could take just a little bit longer getting there, he thought as he cast a glance in Nuray's direction.

If one had to judge by her behavior, they would think she couldn't live without the sound of someone's voice...the woman could talk a person to death if she got going on a subject. However, most people just found it entertaining and wondered where on earth she got all the energy she expended just living. "It's been fun. I can't wait for the weather to warm up some so that Jay will come. He's always complaining about how he's far too old to be swimming when even the fish are wearing fur coats."

Nuray found her mentor's reluctance to be a source of unending amusement. He rarely joined her when she went swimming because she would be gone for at minimum hours at maximum several days since she had little concept of time when she was busy. Wriggling in and out of holes, finding tunnels and seeing if anyone left something behind was more than enough to keep her occupied for quite a while. "What about you? Do you travel? Or rather did you since it seems most of the world isn't habitable anymore according to what I've been told." It was obvious that current events weren't exactly her strong suit.

Really, she'd been busy while Pandora was happening and like just about everything else that didn't directly and completely effect her, it had been for the most part ignored. Jay paid more attention to it simply because he had family members die, but even his attention was only perhaps a quarter of what it would have been if he were less involved in the life of the mind and more involved with other people. "I used to love searching wrecks," a random observation that sort of went with what they were talking about and kind of just came out of the blue.

It was Nuray's overall energetic nature that Elijah found entertaining. He couldn't remember the last time he had met someone who was so curious about the world that wasn't a young child. Only children had exhibited similar amounts of energy, and enthusiasm. It was the reason he liked kids; the intelligent, non-hyper ones at least. He smiled at Nuray, though his own curiosity got the better of him when the mermaid mentioned Jay. "Who's Jay?" The palace was getting closer every minute they rode. "Is he your husband?" Surely the man wasn't her father since she had called him by his first name.

His life before Elysium wasn't anything spectacular. Yes, he traveled, doing odd jobs in each city he inhabited. He couldn't stay in one place for very long before his wanderlust got the better of him. Moving was easy since he didn't have very many possessions to take with him to each new place. Just journals. Aubert's journals. They were priceless to the elemental.

"I used to travel, and maybe I will again someday. I hear they'll be opening sea travel next year," Elijah said to his companion. "Though I'm not sure if I want to see the devastation of war." Elijah often wondered what happened with all of the casualties of the virus, and the war. Were they left in the very spots they died? Were some given a proper burial? Or was there nothing but ashes and bone covering the land? He didn't know, and while a part of him was curious he wasn't sure if he wanted to face that much death all at once.

"You'll get to explore the oceans again," he said with a grin. "Maybe not ships, but how about an abandoned palace?" He cocked his head to the side to indicate that they had arrived at their destination. The palace stood upon its snowy hill, a veritable treasure box waiting to be opened by anyone who wished to enter its domain.

"Everyone asks that," not that it bothered her, she found that funny too. She'd lived with Jay long enough they could possibly be considered married by what she understood the rules to be. If they had been living in America, she would be considered his common law wife by the fact they had lived under one roof as if married for a period longer than seven years. Really, the only difference between them and an actual married couple was the sex. Nuray didn't see Jay as sexy and she'd never asked him what he thought about her in that respect. "Jay lets me borrow his name because humans have last names, I didn't have a last name, but no he's not my husband. He's my captain and my teacher, but not my husband." She'd played navigator for him for such a long time.

Nuray always wanted to know about others. She loved to connect and talk and make friends.

"One day," there was nothing but hope in that statement for her. Nuray didn't do somber and depressed very well. Though she had gone through a spell for a while where she was horribly unhappy with the world because murder was not something she understood or found herself truly able to accept.

Seeing the palace from a distance and seeing it up close were two very different things. It looked so beautiful with the snow all over it. "Have you ever done this before? Gone rooting through an ancient castle?" She smiled big at the thought. This was wonderful. The urge to bounce off her horse and go running in to look around was almost unbearable.

Elijah could have asked if Jay was Nuray's brother, father, or even uncle, but for some reason his mind automatically went to husband. He wondered if it was a testament to the type of world that they had been living in, where two people who lived together had to be in some kind of romantic relationship. Maybe it just didn't seem natural for anyone in their thirties to still live with their relatives. But Nuray's explanation made sense to the elemental, and he made a soft "aah" sound to show he understood.

He hadn't ventured farther than the lake to explore the waters outside of the haven so he really didn't know if the oceans and seas were safe to swim in. Elijah too was filled with hope for the future, that one day the world would be healed, and they would be able to live beyond the walls of the haven. Hopefully he would be alive to see that day.

The elven palace glistened in the distance, and he was mesmerized by its sight. He couldn't remember seeing anything so beautiful before. Elijah shook his head. "No, I haven't," he answered her as he turned to face her. "Better now than never, right?" He guided his horse to a covered stable that lay at the bottom of the hill. They'd have to walk the rest of the way to the castle, but by the look on Nuray's face the girl didn't mind one bit.

For Nuray, it would be unnatural for someone to stop living with their relatives. She was the odd one out choosing to leave her family. After all, one's family is your life line. Where she was from, merfolk didn't travel alone. They traveled in groups, usually made up of immediate and extended family. Boys were more likely to move from one group to another. However, she didn't find it necessary to explain that. If people wanted to know, they would ask. Since they didn't ask, she didn't explain, better for everyone. Discussions of familial behavior could be extremely boring.

Neither of them had ever gone into a palace before, well there was certainly a first time for everything. Nuray loved first times. And second times if she was honest. It was too much fun to do some things for her not to want to do them again. "Yes," her enthusiasm was hard to hide so she didn't try. At the stable, she slipped out of the saddle, taking a moment to rub the horse's face and just be affectionate toward the animal. "Thank you," once again talking to the horse like a person.

It was going to be a short walk, which didn't bother her in the least. It would give them more chance to talk. "I do so love the idea of this, it's grand to think of what one can learn from old buildings and people."

What was natural to Elijah wasn't natural to other beings in the world. He was created in what some would consider an unnatural process. He didn't even have a body until Aubert had created one, and called the elemental forth to occupy that body. But it was rare for him to share those memories with anyone but an alchemist, and unless someone had asked him about it.

He tied up his horse next to Nuray's, and unstrapped her bag from the saddle. He carried it for her as they began to make their way up to the palace. It was indeed a short walk, and Elijah was beginning to feel a small tingle of excitement deep down inside. It didn't show on his face, but it was there, and he nodded in agreement with the mermaid's statement. "I've never done anything like this," he admitted. "The only history I know is that of alchemy and of my alchemist." He knew general history of the world, of course, but he never explored anything for the sole purpose of learning of its past.

"I'll have to follow your lead," he said as he pushed open the large front doors of the palace. He held it in place for his companion though his eyes were aimed upward toward the beautiful architecture of the main hall. "Wow," he said, his voice echoing throughout the hall. There was an iridescent glow to the meticulously detailed walls, arches, columns, and even the ceiling of the entrance hall. Elven patterns were etched into the high walls and ceilings, and the end of the foyer was marked by a large archway. Once they were both inside Elijah continued forward to look around. There was an intersection at the end of the foyer, one where the paths obviously led to different areas of the palace. Two large, long hallways extended left and right, and directly in front of Elijah there was a grand staircase that split into two separate stairs after its first landing. The stairs led upward to an area he couldn't readily see, but he had no doubt that he would find out soon enough.

"Oh, then I'll have to show you all the things you can do in old buildings," Jay's original training was as an Egytologist, so there were certain techniques that while they didn't work well underwater, he had still taken the time to at least relay to her. Like taking rubbings of walls so that one could carry away the information to be mulled over later.

However, explaining was going to wait until while she had her near spiritual awe moment over just looking at the place. "I am so dragging Jay out here," and she really did start to physically bounce. "What I wouldn't give to have our camera." The tide of words had apparently been opened up by the first statement because Nuray then simply went to chattering as she looked over each and everything that she could.

Moving through the foyer, "the architecture reminds me of Greek, but more natural than Greek. Granted, given this area, that's not hard to believe. Maybe the Elves or at least the remains of their work influenced the Greeks." Just randomly speaking. "Ohhhh..." something caught her eye and she stopped before hunkering down to look at a specific section of wall. "Maybe an artist signature," she smiled big. "It's beautiful and if you're not really looking it doesn't stand out from the work. Elijah, look at this. I'm betting this person did a lot of work in this palace, it looks like the kind of unified work one gets from one person only. I wonder if he did his work here first or last."

She really just couldn't stop talking.

Elijah stood back, and watched Nuray as she looked around in awestruck. He understood her wonder since he felt it himself, but it didn't go further than that. He would have to spend more time with Nuray in order to appreciate the historical significance of such a place. In the meantime, he was perfectly content with admiring the aesthetics of the building.

Her voice echoed in the foyer, and Elijah followed her at a distance so he wouldn't disturb her. While he didn't know a lot about history or architecture he could agree with Nuray's logic. Elysium was very close to the Mediterranean, and he wouldn't be surprised if architectural elements were often exchanged. He thought it was more that the Greeks borrowed from the Elves considering just how old the Elven race actually was. He made a "Mmm" sound to show that he was listening, and raised his eyebrows a bit when she called him name.

Elijah didn't say anything as he knelt down beside her to examine the wall. He didn't see anything at first, not until he looked closer at the area that Nuray was indicating. It did look like writing, and Elijah nodded his head before he cast his gaze upward at the rest of the art. "I bet we can find out at the library," he said absently as he rose to his feet. The more he gazed at the ceiling, the more he thought it looked like a story of some kind. Stepping out into the hallway he noticed that there were more scenes etched there as well.

"Maybe he did this part first," Elijah suggested. "I mean, I don't know anything about history or even what to look for, but it almost looks like a story or something. Then again, I could completely wrong." He looked over at Nuray. Maybe the mermaid could make some sense of it all.

Nuray was for all practical purposes bouncing inside her skin. This was even better than the nearly intact wreck she and Jay had found nearly completely in a forgotten cove on the coast of Turkey. Some of the metal work had survived and once they had managed to clean the vegetation and such off it, the stuff was valuable and beautiful. Of course, that had taken weeks and she'd watched the process almost the entire time fascinated by the way the chemicals ate the algae but not the metal. She really wanted to know what every aspect of the process looked like. It was hard to separate her from work when there was something new going on.

The library would be a grand place to go after this, to be hip deep in books to illuminate a subject. Nuray was a nerd of the first order, even if she didn't know what that word meant. She loved her information, knowledge, and history too much to be anything but a nerd.

The place was covered in frescoes, carvings of what might have been history, it might have been mythology. "It's not uncommon for cultures to paint stories on the walls of their significant places. This was a palace. We might be looking at the mythos of creation, which would have been in honor of the gods. Or the history of the royal family itself." There were a number of different possible ideas. "The Egyptians were absolutely famous for commemorating their achievements on the walls of tombs. The Chinese were also quite good at leaving behind records, but Egyptians were best. It's almost sad how much learning is concentrated on Western Europe and America considering how young those cultures are in comparison to other areas on Earth."

Nuray was chattering on and mentally measuring off distances. She was going to have to recreate this floor plan on paper later so that she could discuss the dimensions with Jay. "But if what I understand about elves is correct, they were old when the Egyptians were still figuring out the patterns of the Nile." She chuckled to herself. "I'm waddling on like a whale with a sprained back. Forgive me. You didn't come all the way out here for a lecture on the burial procedures of ancient kingdoms."

Even as she asked for forgiveness she didn't seem terribly contrite. It was hard to be upset when she was so giddy about this whole thing.

Though Elijah was older than Nuray the young mermaid knew so much more about the history of the world than she did. He almost felt ashamed because of it, and he wondered if he had wasted away his time on earth. He had only been a freed elemental for twenty something years, but what had he done in that time? What had he learned? What could he share with this mermaid that would be worthwhile?

He looked at her as she went on and on about ancient cultures, the corner of his mouth twitching upward to form a smile. Her giddiness drowned out any sarcasm he might have normally doled out; she was just too - and he didn't use this word often - cute. Elijah couldn't remember the last time he felt this content in someone else's company. He wasn't even bored listening to her rattle on about something he had no knowledge in.

He did know one thing though. "Elves are very ancient," he said with a nod. "To think that they were this advanced when the rest of the world was just beginning. It's amazing." He ran his fingers over the intricate designs on the walls. "It's too bad I can't remember anything from before I was given a body. According to my alchemist, I'm as old as the planet itself since I am an elemental. I just had no way of storing memories before all of this." He made a sweeping motion over his body with his hand, and then sighed. "I guess I'll never know what I've seen or experienced."

"You know, this is probably going to take more than one trip. I could probably spend a week just looking at the entry way," the colors were still so beautifully preserved, a vision for the mind to absorb. "That makes it that much more important to see and remember things now, knowing that there were things that went by without knowing what they were. I remember the first time I ever set foot on land, I was absolutely fascinated with birds and sand and people," Nuray was chattering again, comforted by the sound of her own voice even as she traced her fingers carefully along the outline of a person on the wall. "I'd seen them all before from under water, but it was a different, different thing to see them in the air and doing things they don't do in the ocean. I never thought I'd figure out the walking thing, but I was determined to. My Father said I was born smart and dumb. Smart enough to wanna know everything, dumb enough to try and find it all out."

Her Father had certainly been right about that. The mermaid found herself a seat on the floor looking up at the fresco. "Amazing. Now to figure this out."

Elijah sat with the mermaid on the floor, looking up at the ceiling just as she did. He didn't mind her chattering. She had a nice voice, and she spoke with a depth that seemed to surpass her young age. Her words touched Elijah though; it didn't matter what he couldn't remember from before his body. The fact that he had a body now made it that much more important to remember the things he experienced, and learned. He supposed that he had been doing that with all of Aubert's knowledge in alchemy. He was one of the remaining vessels that held all of the old man's research.

"We can come back as many times as you want." It was Elijah's way of saying he wanted to spend more time with her, and that he would bring her back whenever she wanted.
