Who: All werewolves and guests at the barrier
When: Before sunset, and onward
Where: Werewolf barrier, Northeastern forest
What: Full moon and a forest full of werewolves

The falling snow gave a false sense of peace for there was nothing peaceful about the full moon, at least not for those who were its prisoner month after month. The silver orb in the sky, hundreds of thousands of miles away, was the catalyst for the violent change in the lycanthropes. No, the peaceful atmosphere upon the land would only last until the sun sank below the horizon. Then the night would be overcome by the howls from each and every lycanthrope.

The lycanthropes traveled to the enclosure before sunset, most of them dressed in old, worn-out clothing that would get destroyed during their transformation. From afar their trek was reminiscent of a death march, slow, reluctant footfalls through the snow until they reached their destination. Christmas Eve did little to alleviate the foreboding aura that descended like the unending snow.

Tonight, the snow would bleed. Deep crimson seeping through the pristine crystals until it reached the frozen earth. There would be few areas free from the bloodshed, and the carnage. It was the reason the enclosure was needed. It confined the werewolves, and their murderous rage to an area free of humans and praeternaturals. It kept the citizens safe to enjoy their winter holiday while the wolves raced through the trees and underbrush after their prey.

Zach knew what the full moon meant for tonight. While there was a part of it that was potentially scary, it wasn’t as frightening an aspect for him as it was for other people. Werewolves were transforming all over the grounds somewhere on the other side of the barrier, but he also knew that somewhere out there was Adrienne going through the same thing. They had been practicing for months to try and get her to recognize him in werewolf form, which had been working. Each time he saw her lately, she recognized him, the fearful animal features became soft, almost akin to a puppy’s face, and she looked more like a friendly companion than a beast on the prowl.

He walked her out here earlier, watched as she made her way behind the barrier and waved to him one last time with a smile, and waited until she disappeared from sight. He always waited until she disappeared before he headed back home for a little bit. Zach might as well have his own supper while Adrienne was out hunting hers for the night. It would have taken maybe two hours or three before he saw here again, anyway. Adrienne needed to hunt before she could communicate with him; when the beast came out, it was hungry.

After he finished eating, he paid a short visit to his parents’ home and stayed there for a little bit. Then, he was on his way back to the barrier around the northeast forest. Faithfully as before, Zach sat down on a particularly lush piece of ground once he felt for the invisible barrier and his fingers grazed it. He wanted the closest spot he could get near the boundary. Picking up his light whistle, he blew a soundless call out into the night — a call only a werewolf would hear, and one Adrienne would recognize.

Several hours had passed since Adrienne last saw Zach at the barrier. The memory was foggy within the mind of the beast, and there were times when the wolf struggled to make sense of the figures it saw in its mind. It was something like a dream, only the wolf knew that it was real. The people in the dream were real, and that the boy was someone that it cared for.

The wolf cared for and remembered the boy, and it was the trigger that brought Adrienne forward to exert some control. It was becoming easier with every full moon due to the efforts that she and Zach had made. He was her pillar of strength in all of this, and she would have been a mindless killer without his love and support.

The high pitched squeal of the whistle pierced through the night sky. Other lycanthropes would hear the sound, but only Adrienne would respond to it. It was Zach's signal to her that he was waiting by the barrier. She, and the wolf, were trained to its sound, and she ran rapidly through the trees until she reached the edge of the forest.

Adrienne was barely recognizable in her werewolf form, but Zach was used to seeing her when she was a two-legged beast. She lingered around the tree line for a few minutes, eying the area around Zach before she made her way toward him. She ran forth, but not like an animal on the attack. It was excitement, and happiness, and the usually savage wolf even wagged its tail during the approach.

She was running at near full speed on all fours until the barrier stopped her. She had forgotten about the invisible shield in all of her excitement. Instead of letting out a yelp of pain Adrienne shook her head, and growled deeply in the back of her throat. The lycan stood on her hind legs, and chuffed at the barrier in a challenging manner. The werewolf was easily angered, but the moment its eyes met with Zach's she became calm, and docile.

Adrienne sniffed at the barrier, and reached out with one claw to test the distance. Her eyes had returned to being blue, and green, and they showed every emotion she was feeling. The werewolf leaned forward to lick the barrier, sad that that was as close as she was allowed to get. She looked at Zach sadly, and tried to let him know that she was sorry before she let out a lonely howl.

A surge of exhilaration, and maybe a small surge of terror, filled him as Adrienne ran toward him on all fours. He recognized her, even from a distance, because she was familiar in both human and werewolf form to him. Though he had tried his best to train away the majority of his fear, it still crept up when there was no visible barrier for his eyes to discern and in those moments when Adrienne didn’t seem to recognize him. Seeing a huge werewolf bounding toward you and knowing one bite could make you into one, or that a couple of bites could turn you into shredded shish kabob, was enough to cause fear in any sensible person.

Zach found himself taking a step or two back once she reached the barrier, and he winced when he saw her hit it and bounce of the invisible wall. It seemed to shine for a moment where she cracked into it, not that she had broken it. It was just one of those magical reactions or something, but it made him smile all the same. Her growl wiped the smile right off of his face, and for a moment he was scared that she was angry now and he looked like a meal and not her boyfriend anymore. The fear only last a few seconds. Adrienne began calm again, staring him in the eyes across the short distance in between them.

He watched as she sniffed at the barrier. The silly grin came back, and he reached out to touch the barrier with his hand as her claw scratched at the invisible wall. He should have been afraid of a claw that big and sharp, but he knew was safe now . . . and she recognized him. Zach felt something swell up inside of his chest, his jaw seemed to tighten in the back, and a strange sting surfaced on his eyes. He blinked it back and inhaled, scratching his nose with his free hand. He was being girly with all of these emotions.

“Hey, Adrienne,” Zach said softly, pressing his palm to the surface of the barrier. Her claw slipped near it, pawing at the block, and then she licked it. Zach’s eyes brightened and his smile grew. He pressed his nose to the barrier as she licked it. “If only I could scratch your ears,” he joked, letting out a little laugh.

His brows furrowed at her howl, the sad sound confusing Zach. “Don’t be sad, Adrienne,” he said. “I’m right here.”

Adrienne would have never come to this point if it weren't for Zach pushing her to do her best. She never meant to scare him whenever she approached the barrier, but there wasn't much she could do to make herself less menacing. Sharp teeth, long claws, and a lumbering form covered in fur were the things that normally filled horror movies, and nightmares.

But her demeanor now was different from the terror she was a few hours earlier. She was almost docile as she settled down on the other side of the barrier. Though she was mostly beast in those moments she was well aware of her feelings, and she could understand Zach's words when he spoke. If she could smile she would, but any widening of her mouth would look more scary than friendly. Her wagging tail, however, was always a sure sign of happiness.

Though Adrienne had come to terms with her lycanthropy there were times when it made her feel alone, and isolated. She wanted to be close to Zach, but she wondered if he would even come near her if there weren't a barrier between them. She looked at him sadly, licking at the invisible shield between them. I love you, she said in her mind though Zach couldn't hear it. She settled down on the ground, curling up into a ball with her eyes still on Zach.

He noticed her wagging tail, and it brought a bright smile to his face that reached his eyes. Even in her werewolf form, Zach still loved Adrienne unconditionally. It was a cheesy way to put it, but it was the most honest way to describe what he was feeling as his hand traced along the barrier across from her muzzle. Despite the fact that she was dangerous in this form, all that Zach could see for the time being was his girlfriend on the other side of the barrier.

It would take time for him to be comfortable with coming forward without a barrier between them. There was still the possibility that she could tear him to shreds with one wrong perception of him. Maybe one day she wouldn’t recognize him, or one moment he’d be a piece of meat, and she could kill him. Even though the idea of dying terrified Zach, it scared him even more that he could put her in the position of being responsible for his death. It wasn’t something Zach wanted to chance, not now. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever be comfortable with it, but he wanted to be. Wishes didn’t change reality, though.

Zach smiled and hummed in amusement. “Hmph,” he said, tilting his head to the side. “You’re adorable even when you’re all furry. Of course, I wouldn’t make out with you like this, but you know, I think you’d agree with me on that anyway.” He grinned at his joke, looking Adrienne in the eyes and hoping she understood what he was saying. He always wondered if she knew human speech in her werewolf form.

No matter what form she was in Adrienne always loved Zach, even if she didn't always remember him. There were times she didn't even remember herself, or what happened during the night of the full moon. She had worked hard to get to the point where she could recognize Zach, and the night wasn't just a blur of blood and gore. Seeing her boyfriend on the other side of the barrier, and actually recognizing him was the best feeling in the world! Not being able to touch him though, sort of sucked.

Then again, Adrienne wasn't sure if she could be trusted without a barrier in between them. While she had gained some control over the beast there were times when it took over completely. She couldn't bear the thought of hurting Zach, or killing him, if she ever had to face him without a barrier.

She kept her eyes on him, her consciousness lingering between herself, and the wolf. The bestial part was very much like an obedient puppy at the moment, wanting to please Zach by doing little things. She could partially understand his words, and she could tell he was joking. Suddenly, she lifted her head, and cocked it to the side. There was a rustling in the bushes behind her, and it had caught her attention. Adrienne turned to face it, her muzzle lifted into the air as she sniffed for a scent. Without another indication she shot off in its direction, faster than any other land animal would have been able to run. Something had caught her attention.

She was gone for several minutes before she reemerged with something caught in between her teeth. It was still wriggling around, very much alive and uninjured. Adrienne brought it forward to the barrier, and released it into its dangerous paws. The small rabbit was too scared to run away as it huddled into a tight ball. The werewolf looked at it curiously, and then put it on the ground. It was an offering, a present, the only thing she could give him while she was like this.

Adrienne suddenly sniffed the air and darted off away from Zach, leaving him at the barrier alone. There was a baffled look on his face for a while, and he moved to a kneeling position against the barrier, touching it with one of his hands and peering as closely as he could get to see where she was going off to and why. He understood she was currently in a bestial form and it was hard for her to deny it, even harder for her to exert a complete control over it, so it didn’t bother him. Zach did hope she would come back, though.

Zach eventually fell back onto his bottom and waited patiently by the barrier, wondering when she would return. He actually broke out the notepad and almost considered doing some more doodling until she appeared beneath the horizon of the forest. Zach discarded the notebook and squinted his eyes to get a better look, his eyes opening wide when he noticed something was in between her teeth. The thing wriggled and wriggled like mad, attempting to get away, and Zach was wondering what in the world Adrienne was doing.

Finally, she released the little animal and it fell into her palms. It was a bunny rabbit. Zach actually felt himself smiling, especially since the animal was unharmed. She dropped it to the ground, and Zach recognized the meaning behind it: It was a present for him. “Thank you,” Zach said. “I’d wrap it up and take it home if only I could pick it up,” he joked, smirking as he looked at the little animal and wished he could reach it. If only there wasn’t a barrier between them.

The rabbit didn't dare move for a few minutes after Adrienne had put it down. It was too scared even though Adrienne had no intention of hurting it. She had already hunted for the night, and the beast was completely satiated. Besides, Zach had a way of calming Adrienne even when she was like this. She was calm enough to know that she wanted to give him something.

It wasn't her initial thought when she heard the sound in the bushes, but seeing the rabbit had given the beast the idea. It was something along the lines of a dog leaving a dead bird on the doorstep for its owners, except it wasn't a bird in this case, and it was still alive. Good thing, too, since Zach would have been disgusted by the sight of a bloody rabbit.

The small creature tried to hop away, but Adrienne gently used her paw to bring it back to its spot in front of her. It almost looked like it she was protecting it from any other potential hunters out there. Adrienne knew that other werewolves would have hunted, and killed the little rabbit already.

She looked up at Zach when he spoke, and partially understood what he was saying. She reached out a claw toward Zach again, but her advance was stopped by the invisible barrier. Adrienne looked down, realizing that Zach couldn't do anything with her gift. She chuffed in annoyance, and settled on her haunches in frustration.

Zach would have gladly taken the rabbit and kept it as a pet, but it all depended if the rabbit was even there in the morning. Adrienne couldn’t watch it all night and would probably lose interest in the little animal eventually, and Zach wouldn’t be able to stay out here all night with her. The creature kept trying to hop away, but Adrienne’s paw blocked its escape each time, and Zach felt a laugh bubbling out of his chest. It was funny to watch the rabbit attempt to escape and Adrienne stopping it. It was obviously she wanted Zach to have the rabbit, and Zach couldn’t prevent the smile it brought to his face.

Even as a werewolf, she wanted to give him a gift. It was adorable.

“We should go for a walk,” Zach suggested to Adrienne, slowly getting up from his position on the ground. He dusted the dirt and grass off of his pants and dropped his notepad into his bag. He put his hand against the barrier, so she would know he wasn’t leaving and gesturing for her to follow. Then, he began to take steps along the invisible wall, looking at her the whole time. Adrienne would know what he meant by it, and he smiled at her, beckoning her to follow.

“We can walk for a little bit and just enjoy ourselves,” he said. “You know, for however long you want to stick by the barrier. I don’t know what to do but to tell you stories, and I’m not sure how much they’ll catch your attention since I have no awesome actions tales to tell you. Ooh, maybe I can make up a story about how I jumped from the top of a burning building onto the next, rescuing a little baby from the fire. Hmm, you know, I once thought of becoming a firefighter because I thought it would make me badass and people would like me better. It wasn’t a fantasy that lasted very long, though.”

Zach was just rambling, and any moment, Adrienne might get bored and run off again. It happened every time eventually. Maybe not boredom, but the beast’s attention drew elsewhere and she bounded off — probably for a deer or, he thought with a grin, a bunny. It didn’t matter to Zach, though. As long as he got to spend some time with her on these nights, he was happy.

He didn’t want her lycanthropy to keep them apart. She mattered too much to him for that.

Zach was lucky Adrienne didn't bring back a dead rabbit as a gift, as was the case with so many other canines. Dead birds, squirrels, and mice - all were potential gifts. The rabbit kept trying to get away, and when it was obvious that Zach couldn't accept the gift Adrienne let it run back into the forest. It scurried off into the safety of the bushes, though strangely enough it peeked back out to look at Adrienne and Zach.

The lycanthrope followed Zach as he walked on the other side of the barrier. She lumbered along on her hind legs keeping up with her companion easily. She listened to Zach talk, though occasionally her attention was directed elsewhere. A loud rustle in the bushes, or a howl in the distance would cause her to stop in her tracks, and focus in its direction. A defensive stance took over her body for those few moments, and when she was sure it was nothing she continued to walk by Zach's side.

His story did reach Adrienne despite the dominance the wolf exerted during the full moon. "A fireman," she thought to herself when another sound caught her attention. "Squirrel!" Again she stopped to sniff the air before her eyes trained on a spot in the distance. There was nothing, of course, and the snow was completely undisturbed. Shimmering crystals under the moonlight. It was beautiful.

Adrienne leaned over, and scooped some snow into her mouth. She crunched down on it before she buried her nose in it, and rubbed her face all around in the snow. It was strange seeing a werewolf being playful, but at that moment Adrienne was anything but vicious.

Zach fell silent as he glanced over and noticed Adrienne playing around in the snow. A small smile crept onto his face, and he stopped walking to slip his hands into his pockets and just watch her. She buried her nose into the snow, and Zach started laughing at her antics. No, they weren’t crazy antics, but they were really cute to watch. Sometimes werewolves were scary things to behold, but most of the time Adrienne was very docile around him in her werewolf form. It was a great accomplishment for the two of them, and it particularly meaningful for them both as well.

He wasn’t sure what else to say, so he let the silence continue on without any other words to interrupt it. He considered copying her movements and scooping some snow into his mouth as well, but it wasn’t snowing anymore and he didn’t want to scoop up dirty snow from the ground. It was okay for Adrienne to do it because she was in her werewolf form and a lot of things were acceptable in werewolf form, especially burying one’s face into the snow.

They spent a little bit longer in each other’s company until the call of the wild dragged Adrienne back into the big forest of the North. Zach watched her go with a sad look on his face, but he smiled because he knew he’d see her again in the morning. With a final gaze off in the distance, Zach’s hand dropped from the barrier and he turned around to make his way back home.

Katy and Sascha

Katy shivered and rubbed her shoulders as she stepped behind the barrier. It was freezing, and she was wearing little more than a tank top and some old pants that wouldn't be a problem if she tore them to complete shreds when she turned. She sighed and looked up in the air and watched her breath fog and dissipate.

When she first turned into a werewolf, she was incapable of believing that this would be her life for the whole extent of it. After eight years she had come to the conclusion that it wouldn't change and that she was just going to live a messed up version of life as her reality. Sure, she was powerful now. More powerful than most human men could ever hope to be, and all in a tiny package of what appeared to be a human woman. But this night was what made it a curse. While others were at home sleeping and thinking of presents under the tree, she would become something primal racing through the forest with a hunger she still couldn't fully understand.

The pain started to build up slowly at first. It always did until it suddenly hit you like a speeding train. Katy screamed and clutched her shoulders, no longer thinking of the cold. Blood and tissue were being pulled apart at a molecular level as she doubled over. She could always swear that through the pain she could hear the cracking of her bones as her body structure changed to that of the monstrous wolf. Her body shuddered as hair grew from her skin, covering her in gray and white. Her jaw practically unhinged as it turned into a muzzle. Her nails turned into claws and plunged into the snow covered ground, digging into the frozen dirt. Even her eyes changed as they became white-blue and large when the wolf took over her body.

Blood dripped into the white snow from the animal's mouth as it panted. Every time her jaw broke like that, she bled from it until the were's healing kicked in to clot the blood quicker than if she had been a normal human. Always in the beginning, she tasted blood in her mouth. The animal looked down at the blood stained snow. She could see also, but it was always hazy around the edges. The animal had a strange compulsion, and bent down to eat the snow she had bled on, letting it melt in it's mouth. Metallic snow melt.

Ears on top of it's head twitched as it heard cries from other lycans as they started their hunts. It howled in return. Sometimes giving into the baser instincts was cathartic. It was actually becoming of a freeing experience as she and the wolf grew older and came to know each other better. Katy, who was now in the back of the subconscious part of the brain where the animal normally resided, let go and allowed the animal to run free into the night.

Sascha checked his wristwatch for the third time in as many minutes before glancing back over at the darkened treeline in front of him. It was only a few minutes prior to midnight, just shy of Christmas Day, and Sascha was beginning to grow antsy. It had become a sort of ritual for him to visit the barrier every other month or so, just on the off chance that he'd encounter another of the lycans in full furry form. He'd only been successful during that one confrontation with Adrienne and the lone wolf, Jack, but that had been months ago and he'd seen neither hide nor hair of the man since. Adrienne and Zach were probably playing out their monthly ritual as well, he knew this, and he'd resolved to stay as far away as possible so as not to disturb them.

The biting cold air prickled against the exposed skin of his face as another chilly gust of wind blew through the clearing, and Sascha settled himself carefully against the horizontally splayed trunk of a fallen tree as he tried to find some sort of windbreak. He'd brought his guitar with him to pass the time, but it was so incredibly cold out tonight that he knew it would be best not to linger for more than an hour or two. He wasn't sure why he felt compelled to return to the barrier like this, especially now that his telepathic powers had expanded enough to include most humanoid-type creatures with whom he could hold an otherwise regular conversation; ever since that first connection, though, he'd been hooked on the strange sensation of communicating with a being whose mind was equal parts cultured and primal.

"Alright, kids," he said aloud to no one in particular as he opened up his guitar case and situated the instrument on his lap, gliding his fingertips smoothly over the finish to make sure the frigid temperature hadn't had any adverse effects. "Maybe a little music will soothe the savage beast. Fingers crossed." Sascha shook his hands a bit to get the blood circulating again before reaching for the neck of the guitar and starting to play a little tune. It was a soft, sweet song, and he closed his eyes as he strummed out the lilting melody, letting the music overwhelm him until he couldn't help but to sing along. Really, what were the odds that anyone would hear him?

What were the odds indeed.

The wolf was ripping into the hide of what used to be a living creature. Katy had long since become used to the killing smaller animals. In the beginning it had made her cringe and want to lose her appetite, but the riggers of her changed body kept that from happening. She had to eat, and eat well because of the increase in her metabolism.

Blood was mixing in the fur that lined the Were's muzzle and it ripped another piece of meat from the carcase's bones when it's ears picked up on a sound. The animal stilled as it listened to the unnatural sound given its current environment, and the part of the animal's mind that was still Katy's awoke from the passive state she had been in. A guitar and a voice, a man's voice, floated with the snow on wind to her direction. The monstrous wolf stood up on its hind legs and closed its eyes, listening.

Through years of hard work and meditation, Katy was able to pull a little influence over the animal that took over her body once a night every single month. At first it felt like a victory when she was just able to remain partly conscious through the event, but because of her continued dedication she was able to exert some say in this powerful form.

Find it.

The Were opened it's eyes, crouched down, and bolted in the direction of the sound. It panted as it ran through the forest, steam rising from the warm moist areas around the face as it dodged underbrush and crashed through snow drifts. When it neared the barrier erected for the safety of all Elysium, the animal slowed its gallop. It stuck its nose in the air and sniffed inward. Vision dictated that nothing was there, but the animal's strong instinct said that there would be no getting past the invisible barrier, and the sound came from behind it.

The pale blue eyes locked on to the form of a human sitting beyond the invisible wall and pegged it as the source of the sound. Katy was able to see through the eyes as well, even though the vision around the edges blended and blurred slightly. A man was playing a guitar outside of the barrier. Why? Who would come out here on Christmas Eve to play music for creatures that belonged to the darkness and the full moon? None of them would appreciate it. The wolf slowly moved closer to the barrier, muscles were tense, and threatening to spring if there was any sudden movement when Katy recognized him.

Mr. Pirate!

Even before the familiar female voice entered his mind, Sascha could sense the creature's presence; the hair standing up on the back of his neck was almost a sure indication. He'd never encountered another canine that elicited that type of physical reaction from him, although it wasn't hard to see why- a fully transformed werewolf was most definitely a fearsome sight. Sascha shuddered slightly at the memory of the confrontation with a partially-turned (and very pissed off) Simon before brushing the thought aside and focusing his attention on the present situation.

His fingers fumbled a bit on the strings as his voice cut off abruptly in mid-note, and he opened his eyes and scanned his surroundings for the creature he knew was there, somewhere, watching him. There was no aggression that he could sense in the animal's consciousness, but it was still difficult to shake the feeling that he was being...hunted. Fucking invisible barrier had never really helped his nerves much in that respect.

Sascha slowly lowered his guitar onto the tree trunk as he rose to his feet, gaze darting around a little nervously as he approached the edge of the barrier with one outstretched hand. His naked fingertips hit the surface first, and he pressed his palm (which was much warmer, since he was wearing fingerless gloves) against the smooth barrier with a little reluctance. He'd recognized that voice almost as soon as he'd heard it, but it wasn't until the creature stepped out from the concealing underbrush that he got his first look at little Miss Wilson.

Oh...she was a looker, wasn't she? Sascha felt his breath catch in his throat as the muscled beast began to approach him, its deep gray fur glinting silver in the bright light of the moon. Strangely, he had to resist the sudden urge to stroke along the fur lining the muzzle. As terrifying as these creatures may have seemed up close, they also had a distinctly majestic quality, just like real wolves...still terrifying, though. Fuck, he really hoped he didn't look like he was about to piss his pants- especially in front of this particular individual. She'd never let him live it down.

"...Merry Christmas, Miss Katy." Sascha was surprised at how even his voice sounded, as though he were addressing his companion over coffee or during some other kind of low-key interaction- the kind of interaction where they were both human, of course. Of all the thoughts in his mind at the moment, the one that occurred to him was the fact that she still didn't know his name. He would have continued their unusual conversation with an introduction, but instead he waited to see her reaction.

The frame of the large wolf-like creature walked up out of the underbrush into the open and regarded the man behind the invisible barrier. She could tell that the barrier was there, despite the fact that she could visibly see through it and sent and sounds seemed to carry through it. It was just an instinct that warned her it was there and there was no getting through it. So wolf didn't even think about trying to rush the man who seemed to open and vulnerable.

Both the wolf and Katy could feel the fear and awe rolling off the man safely protected behind the barrier. A wolfish grin seemed to play on the animal's face. They were both proud of the image they portrayed toward the man as the wolf stalked closer to him. Her breath was visible because of the cold but it didn't pass beyond the barrier and the werewolf halted only a few feet from the man with his palm pressed up against the invisible cage that held her at bay.

The wolf sat back on it's haunches and tilted it's massive head, curiously watching the man as he spoke. The words held no real meaning to the wolf part of her, but the part that remained human heard him from within the body of fur and claws. She hadn't been looking forward to Christmas at all seeing as she had no one to celebrate it with, and she would be running wild in this version of herself. She was also impressed with how sure of himself he was able to sound in front of a monster, even if he did somehow know it was her.

How does he know it is me in here? And what is he doing here anyways? Looking for monsters to gawk at and serenade? The large blue eyes of the wolf, so different from Katy's own human eyes, watched him suspiciously.

Sascha could feel his heart pounding away in his ribcage, hard enough and loud enough that he was almost sure the creature sitting opposite the barrier from him could hear it. She didn't appear to openly acknowledge his fear and for that he was grateful; if anything, the were seemed just as curious as he was. The words reverberated in his head as he slowly, carefully sank down to his knees in the snow so that he was at eye-level with the wolf, and answered her unvoiced questions.

"Come here often?" he began with a smile, prefacing the statement by rapping lightly on the barrier with his knuckles. "Haven't seen you out and about before, and I'm usually here every other month. There aren't many of you guys who seem interested in chattin' it up during the full moon, but I guess I can understand why. Not exactly in the best position to carry on a conversation, are you?"

Sascha tucked a few strands of hair behind his ear and inhaled slowly through his nose, trying to ease some of the nervous tension from his body. He'd always been naturally talkative, but whenever he got too anxious he'd start chattering mindlessly away. Unless you can get by without talking. That makes things easier, doesn't it? Bracing himself with his hand on the barrier, he prepared himself for a potentially violent reaction; that tended to happen whenever he spoke into a person's mind without warning, and this particular person had very sharp and intimidating teeth.

"I'll bet you didn't know that I'm a telepath, did you, Miss Katy?" His eyes traced along the muscled bulk of the creature, lingering briefly on the pointed muzzle before coming to rest on the were's own icy gaze. He studied the pale blue color intently, searching for a trace of the humanity he knew was bound away beneath layers of fur.

"And I'll bet you didn't know my name is Sascha, either. Sascha Connolly," here he paused to smile a little wider, "in case you were curious."

Was he really trying to talk to her in this form? This man was certainly a strange one, but he really knew how to play the guitar, if she remembered correctly. It was often hard to recall things when more primitive images belonging to the wolf part bombarded her mind. Sometimes Katy would become confused and the images would overlap each other and seem like they were one in the same. Sometimes she worried she might get lost in her own head. The full moon was always a perplexing time of the month.

I come here whenever the full moon is in the sky. It is cold.

Her head tilted as he spoke. He seemed to like to talk, a lot. There seemed to be a twinkle of understanding in her eyes despite her lack of a vocal response. She moved closer and stopped suddenly as an unfamiliar thought entered her head. The eyes of the wolf went wide and the animal jumped back and crouched down in surprise and for defense.

Katy grasped for control over the sudden lack of confidence and bring the creature that she appeared to be under control. Had that really been him in her head? He spoke directly to her mind. Did that mean he could understand her thoughts as well? If Katy had had complete control over her physical form she probably would have cried. It was one thing to have people who could empathize, or sympathize as was the case for those who weren't weres, but it was something completely different for someone to be able to comprehend the human part of her in this form.

Sascha...You can really hear me? Is that how you knew it was me? Why are you playing your guitar in the cold?

Sascha, a strange name for a boy. Katy wanted to smile. The wolf responded more friendly as it's host seemed to not be worried or wary about the man beyond the barrier. The she-wolf moved closer to the barrier and the man again, and sniffed at the snow, trying to catch his sent from the ground and paced back and forth restlessly.

Sascha flinched away from the barrier for a few moments when the creature drew back in sudden confusion. Yes, he'd been expecting as much when he spoke into her mind, but that didn't mean he'd lost his sense of self-preservation. A sudden and very profound dizziness overtook him as both halves of Katy's consciousness struggled with the mental intrusion, and he briefly closed his eyes against the noise.

"Every person has a distinct mental pattern," he said slowly as he reached up to massage his temple. "Psychic energy signatures, if you will. I recognized yours, just like you recognize people by their scent." He watched the creature paw at the snow as she tried to do just that, and the image brought a smile to his lips despite the slight pounding in his head. "I guess you could say I'm a telepathic canine."

Sascha waited another few moments for the wave of dizziness to pass before carefully rising to his feet and trying to brush the snow from his thoroughly dampened pants. "And playing my guitar helps with the boredom. Like I said, it's not often I actually get the chance to talk to any weres. You're one of the first."

He tucked his guitar safely back into its case and slung the whole shebang over his shoulder, winking playfully at the docile she-wolf. Now that he was engaged in an active conversation with the human mind within the beast, he felt much more at ease. "Let's take a walk, honey bee. I'm starting to lose feeling in my legs." Sascha reached out to caress the barrier with his fingertips as he walked, waiting wordlessly for the lycanthrope to follow him.

The werewolf raised it's head and looked up at the man, sniffing the air again. The animal turned it's head as it processed the words through Katy's mind. Telepathic canine? That seemed like an odd thing for someone to be and the animal couldn't quite comprehend the meaning.

Katy had often felt alone hidden inside the mind of the werewolf. It was such a strange feeling to be able to talk to someone within her own mind. Mental pattern? I never thought of something like that. What does my mental pattern look like?

The werewolf was getting restless and paced the barrier as they conversed within Katy's thoughts. I'm one of the first? Really? I'm surprised more were's aren't interested in being able to talk to someone when we are like this.

The wolf followed after him, rubbing it's shoulder against the barrier. It was feeling wired, like it could burst out into a run at any second, but Katy kept the wolf reigned in. Honey bee? If you are starting to feel numb, then maybe you should head to shelter. You don't exactly have a fur coat like I do.

"The patterns are...hard to describe. It's not so much a look as it is a feeling. And it's always a constant, no matter what form you take." Sascha threw the creature his most charming smile. "Meaning I could pick your thoughts out of a crowd without even having seen your face. Scary, isn't it?"

They'd only been "speaking" for a short time, but already the winter air seemed to be weighing down on him. He shivered visibly and wondered to himself if it was possible for the temperature to have dropped ten degrees in five minutes. Sure as hell felt like it had, anyway.

Sascha could sense the wolf's restlessness, and it occurred to him that maybe he hadn't really thought things through. Sparking a conversation with Katy the human was one thing, but the lycan side of her- the part that was physically manifested at the moment- was probably far more interested in spending its single night of freedom on other pursuits. Preferably something involving the rending of flesh from bone, if her bloodied muzzle was any indication. The thought made him a little queasy.

"You may be right, Kitty," he said without thinking, the nickname rolling naturally off his tongue. "Wouldn't want to miss the carriage home, now, would I? That'd be a hell of a walk." He looked over at the massive beast strolling casually along beside him and smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

"We should try this again when it's a little warmer out, don't you think? I'll even bring the guitar." There was something about their little rapport that seemed so comfortable to Sascha, and he traced the outline of the were's broad shoulders against the invisible surface of the barrier as they moved, withdrawing his fingers when the wolf turned its head to look at him. There was a break in the trees a few hundred yards ahead, and he looked forward again as his feet began to pick up speed.

"Race you to that big pine," he murmured, securing the strap of his carrying case over his shoulder with one hand. He had a feeling this little race would be the end of their encounter, but that was alright; in the future, maybe he'd remember to wear more layers. "Loser buys drinks next time we meet."

It was an odd wager to make, especially considering how obsolete money was in this economy, but Sascha didn't so much as bat an eye before breaking into a run. He figured he'd lose, anyway, even beyond the fact that the bulky guitar on his back slowed him down- no harm in a little head start, right?

The fact that Sascha would be able to pick up on her private thoughts with little to no effort even while in a crowd, was a little more than disconcerting. Ah, yes. That is a bit of a scary thought. But I guess I can do a similar thing with sent. The wolf pressed up against the barrier, the hairs of it's pelt seemed to flatten suddenly against the invisibly wall, as the animal tried to sniff at the man. It seemed frustrated and confused. The barrier must block most of the scent.

Kitty? Had he really just called her kitty? The nick name seemed ridiculous especially in her current state. She had hated it when her brother had used the same diminutive name for her when they had first moved to Colorado. A low growl emitted from the furry beast to echo her thoughts.

Yes, It would be easier for me too. Keeping a tight rein on her more wild self was more difficult than it seemed like it would be. The animal rubbed up against the barrier again, agitated that it wasn't being allowed to run off on it's night of freedom. I can't wait until it is warmer. I love summer days. Images of swim suits, water, beaches, and all the things she associated with summer with through the human mind that held quite a bit of sway over the animal's mind.

If Katy had been human, she would have been smiling at the telepath. You want to challenge a werewolf to a race? Your funeral. I'll be looking forward to that drink you owe me. Katy let her human consciousness meld with that of the beasts and all that could be learned from their combined mind was the rush and excitement as the animal bound forth toward the trees and beyond. The human side knew that she would see the guitar playing pirate again, eventually.

How many times had he found himself in this position? A darkened corner of a nearly abandoned forest, the sound of blood rushing through his ears as his heart beat harder, and faster. Muscles twitching. Skin burning. Bones breaking. Were he a younger lycanthrope he would have screamed bloody murder because of the pain. In fact he heard some of their cries now as the sun descended below the horizon.

It was starting.

He doubled over and dug his nails into the ground. The smell of the earth permeated his senses as he began to change. Saliva fell from his open mouth, and his body went through the shift from man to beast. He was barely recognizable when he was done, but unlike so many others he was keenly aware of every thing around him. He had found a balance with his inner wolf long ago, and he was in control of his faculties and actions even in this form.

Even then there were some things that were hard to deny. The thirst for the hunt, the need to feel flesh in between his sharpened teeth and claws. He killed a lone deer that night, tearing open the artery in its neck before he devoured it. Once the hunt ended he headed toward the edge of the barrier, staying close to the tree line. He was hiding. Hunting. Preying. Stalking her.

And she was there at the barrier, pawing at the invisible shield like a puppy. Wanting to get close to him, a human. Why him! He was nothing! He wasn't even a man yet, but she went to him like a love sick fool. She was sick, and the only person who could help her was him. He would be her salvation, and she would succumb to him like an obedient female should. Dante howled into the night, and sped off into the forest once more. He had plans to make, and things to do, and this time around nothing would stop him.
